★★★★★ "Aaron Hodges is one of those authors you just can't put down. His books suck you in and just won't let go. Matter of fact, you don't want them to let you go. You want the book to continue on and on, the let down is once the book is over."
A century since the departure of the Gods, the Three Nations are now united beneath the Tsar. Magic has been outlawed, its power too dangerous to remain unchecked. All Magickers must surrender themselves to the crown, or face imprisonment and death.
Alana's mundane life has just been torn apart by the emergence of her brother's magic. Now they must leave behind everything they’ve ever known and flee – before the Tsar’s Stalkers pick up their trail. Tasked with hunting down renegade Magickers, the merciless hunters will stop at nothing to bring them before the Tsar’s judgement.
As the noose closes around Alana and her brother, disgraced hero Devon finds himself at odds with the law when he picks a fight with the wrong man. The former warrior has set aside his weapons, but now, caught between the renegades and the Stalkers, he is forced to pick a side – the empire, or the innocent.
Brandon Sanderson meets Terry Brooks in this epic fantasy series by New York Times Bestselling Author Aaron Hodges.
Aaron Hodges was born in 1989 in the small town of Whakatane, New Zealand. He studied for five years at the University of Auckland, completing a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and Geography, and a Masters of Environmental Engineering. After working as an environmental consultant for two years, he now spends his time traveling the world in search of his next adventure.
You know when you are reading a book and you think, no he's/she's not going to let that happen. They are going to pull out someone to come in and save the moment - yeah, that doesn't happen much in this series at all. Talk about an author OK with letting bad things happen to the main characters. But that was OK, because it bothered me, so that let me know that he had me reeled into the story and I was part of the fantasy, and that is how I judge a really good book from just an OK or terrible book. Did you capture me, did you build up a relationship between me and the characters in the book. If the answer is yes, then the author is on the right track. I really enjoyed all that these three books had to offer, from the triumphs to the defeats, from the wins and to the loses. I cheered, I cried, I felt what they all felt. When they were here or there, I could picture the places in my head. When there was fighting, he painted a picture so vivid, I got a feel for the wars waging. There were little things that bothered me, like popping up a tent in the middle of nowhere, where did this tent come from, who carried all these supplies, lighting a fire at night knowing the Tsar's people would see it burning, they fled, but yet never went hungry or without water. Just silly little things, nothing to stop me from reading the first series "The Sword of Light" which I immediately downloaded as soon as I finished this one.
Magic comes from the gods but the gods have long since let this world. The Tstar rules the three kingdoms with an iron fist, only allowing magickers if they obey the Tsar all others are hunted down by the Tsars Stalkers. In a struggle for their lives Alana and her brother must find a way out of the city to somewhere where they can be safe.
The story is one that has been told before with some tweeks but in general this is a struggle against tyranny in whatever form it may come in. Aaron Hodges does a good job at humanizing the main characters and none of them are perfect or even strive to be perfect. You will not find anything truly new in this trilogy but if you have some time it is an enjoyable tale told by a competent author and narrated by David Stifel (Awaken Online series) who does a good job throughout. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Aaron Hodges has proven, once again, that his excellent storytelling abilities are awake and thriving. This series has every thing it needs to make the it a near perfect story. The world and characters are so well developed that I caught myself holding my breath during extremely tense moments. The action made me feel as if I was part of this adventure. The magic is not overdone, but well placed and there are dragons! I love this series as much as The Sword of Light series by Aaron Hodges, possibly due to them happening in the same world, with some of the same characters. I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Disclaimer: I got this series through Kindle Unlimited for which I gratefully thank my daughter.

Oathbreaker: ⭐️5 💧9 Great worldbuilding, rooted for characters, just as good the second time around.
Shield of Winter: ⭐️5 💧8 Excellent first read. Started to love more characters. Still rooted for these two people to get together.
Dawn of War: ⭐️4 💧total distraught. I should have just rooted for the brother he’s the only one who makes it out relatively unscathed (which is saying something because you’d get it if you read the series). The couple I rooted for met an Allegiant ending and now I’m distraught because I spent all this time and energy and now I don’t know what to do with myself. I also wished there was a bit more details on how one can destroy a god and what the heck happened to the other two dragons?
Oathbreaker, my second read/listen from author Aaron Hodges began slowly but was attention-grabbing and enjoyable. The first book in the Legend of the Gods series. Shield of Winter, my third read/listen from author Aaron Hodges picks up where the first book in the series left off. Attention-grabbing and enjoyable. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. Dawn of War, picks up where the second book in the series left off. Attention-grabbing, enjoyable page-turning read, the epic conclusion to the Legend of The Gods Trilogy. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Truly an epic fantasy. This saga had me spellbound from start to finish. The plot, the character and the action left nothing to be desired. You MUST add this to your library. I was given a copy of this audiobook in return for an honest review, and I am so glad to have been given the chance to add it to my list of favorite stories.
Great Read, the characters are all very well developed and well defined. Great plot with a smooth steady storyline. This story is enjoyable and is a great read
The first two books in the series were simply marvelous... Book three just seemed to drag on and on... Then poof all wrapped up in 1000 words or less. I was kind of hoping for a amazing ending but was disappointed. Was a pretty good read all in all amazing characters and a wonderful universe.
I.really enjoyed this series. The characters and world are well described. I loved how all the different personalities all meld together to form the different parts of the story.
The follow on trilogy from the Sword of Light trilogy in the same world following the same family just with an extra couple of generations. It was just as emotionally hard hitting as the first trilogy and an excellent story.
Love how some elements of the first trilogy were incorporated into this trilogy. I was excited to see "Kanker" is still around. Good series. It held my interest.
