The Dragon Lord

Rate this book
In one horrifying hour, Rose of Ayrdale's life was shattered. Lord Dragon, one of King John's fiercest knights, brought the news that Rose's father was dead and revealed that he had been commanded to marry the traitor's widow or daughter and claim the estate.

Rose was certain that neither her grieving mother nor Starla, her twin sister who longed to become a nun, could bear to wed Lord Dragon. But it was equally clear that their new lord had no wish to bind himself to a defiant maiden like Rose. Convincing the Dragon that Rose was the name of the sweet-tempered, biddable twin he was inclined to wed was accomplished in a matter of moments.

Fortunately the deception did not have to last long. Indeed, before the hour was over, fiery Rose had subdued her true nature long enough to convince the Dragon it was her sister he'd wed—and had seen her mother and gentle sister on their way to the sanctuary of a nearby convent. Though she feared the Dragon's wrath when he discovered her pretense, Rose was content with the fruit of her labors—and pleased to have taken at least this small vengeance against her unwanted overlord.

She'd be surprised to realize that the Dragon was already wondering if he'd been too hasty in sending the spitfire to the convent and taking the timid twin to wife—for he is a man of powerful passions who would find the spirited Rose a perfect match.

This is a typical medieval romance from the early 2000 period.
It actually felt quite nostalgic to be returning to my roots and the beginnings of my love affair with romance books which initially sprang forth from these type of historical romances.
This is a pretty typical one with some very purple prose and lots of predictable tropes included.

In a nutshell, Dominic the dragon of pendragon the dragon lord is ordered by King John to secure the Barony of Ayrdale by marrying either the widow or the offspring of the former baron.
Dominic, while thrilled to acquire his own lands, has no wish for a wife not of his choosing.
He was hoping to take his current mistress Veronica as wife.

The former baron has twin daughters who although identical in looks are like night and day in there personality’s.
Dominic chooses to wed the compliant twin Starla having no desire to wed a shrew.
So the sisters switch places ensuring he joins with the feisty Rose.

So there were definitely some things that bothered me with this one.
First the constant references and comparisons to Dominic’s former mistress Veronica I found to be extremely irritating there was just no need.
Veronica is actually mentioned here 213 times that’s a hell of a lot.
And yes we no you wanted another and yes we also know her bloody name; you mention it enough now shut up about her and how perfect she is.

Rose herself I found to be stubborn and considering she was kind of stuck with Dominic you’d think she’d work a bit harder to win him around instead of constantly and intentionally infuriating him at every possible turn.
I also never understood why she was so determined to hate him it did actually seem she was just doing it just for the sake of it.

Rose always thinks the worst and she seems incapable of following simple instructions she constantly causes trouble with her wilfulness putting herself in constant unnecessary danger and it’s really not cute it just smacks of immaturity.
Dominic well he’s a whole lot of obtuse a hell of a lot arrogant and awfully condescending to boot.
Yikes, that’s actually quite the list I’ve made.

So Moving swiftly on this had some very stereotypical character portrayals.
I also wasn’t keen on either Dominic or Rose themselves
They both had some major character flaws that turned me off them.

Dominic’s own pride and self-interest seemed to overshadow any care he had for his wife at least initially and don’t even get me started on his lack of finesse or respect when it came to dealing with his past lover and his new wife under the same roof.
I wonder if he’d be so blasé about it all if the shoe was on the other foot me thinks not, In fact, I know not after that incident concerning Gunn.
I just wanted him to tell the stupid vindictive Veronica to take a hike instead of constantly placating and indulging her.
It was so disrespectful towards Rose the way he acted around her it should have been his wife’s feeling that was most important to him, not his former mistress.

Also, the ending for me with this one was a bit Meh all that strife with the uncle and it's just resolved and Rose wants to forgive and forget what’s all that about hmm.
I’d actually forgotten how much of an infuriating angst-fest these type of romance novels can be.

Anyways despite all of the above Rose and Dominic do get there HEA and I should bloody well think so after all that unnecessary strife.
The writing with this was actually OK and there was a lot of historical facts included.
I would have rated this one higher without all the OW drama and if Dominic had been less of a knob and Rose not so bloody neurotic.

Meh. It's not a bad book, but nothing impressive either. This is a much tamer CM book, and it suffers for it. I needed more angst! Still, it was sweet, and other hr readers might enjoy it.

Sidenote: I couldn't stop laughing at the cursing in this book. "God's nightgown" 🤣 Look if you're going to curse go for the full buck or not at all. A "bloody hell" would have worked

Arranged marriage turns into love. Typical Connie Mason plot but it was kind of different since heroine fell hard and fast for her husband and she was extremely smitten with him. I adored her and I adored Dominic. They were madly in love and crazy about each other. They didn't fight their feelings. Super romantic and cheesy and hot! Amazing, wonderful love story!

"Harder, Dragon. Oh, God, yes. Don't stop."

So that's how the book begins. The hero a virile, hot, and typical Alpha male is giving it good to his mistress.
So, for the life of me I can't understand why the heroine resisted him so much. If he came to lay siege to "my castle", there would be no hesitation. Anyway, they verbally spar for most of the book. She blames him for her father's death. He basically doesn't care and makes her burn hot for him every night. At the end, they realize they love each other. There are a few obstacles like a crazy uncle, a near death experience, and a bad monarch, but of course they overcome it to be together forever. Connie Mason did a great job. This book reminds me of another book by her that I read: The Black Knight.

A quintessential Connie Mason work that still manages to shine even though the characters were tamer than usual. The h wasn't always running off and I was glad she quickly came to grips with her position and surrendered to the pleasure H evoked in her traitorous body. H was a virile knight straight out of my imagination of how I think of a righteous crusade warrior;he was an excellent lover and a more than competent and benevolent lord. We see both our star couple engage in their duties as Lord and Lady with enthusiasm, pride and deep care about their vassals.

The plot line was crisp and I think writing around the politics involved behind Magna carta negotiations was engaging.

As I said earlier, the characters are unusually tamer than her other works. The OW has been with H for two years and they were a good match. When King John ruined her chances with H, I actually sympathized with her situation. She was annoying but she never actively tried to harm H or h, which is a huge plus for me. I wish Ms Mason had provided her closure.

I finished the first 2/3 of this book and for the first time....I am not finishing the last 1/3. Awful names (A women named Veronica in the middle ages?) and the never ending play on the name Rose. The sex scenes are what you would expect from a bodice ripper, which is a bad thing. When the male character throws his head back and roars as he ejaculates....just...don't. Please. Veronica was annoying and conveniently became the villain simply because the 'hero' was banging her in the beginning. Obviously not as virginal and pure as sweet Rose. Everyone was stubborn to a fault. The biggest crime of this book was that I was actually so bored I started skimming everything. I finally reached a point and decided I was going to spend my time reading something I was interested in.

Enjoyed this one. An older romance, and a bit predictable, but well done. I think I would have liked a little more friction between the two... LOL. They seemed to work things about between them just a little too quickly. Dragon was just a big softy underneath all that armour. This was my first book by this author and I'll likely read her again.

The Dragon Lord, Dominic, is ordered by his king to head to Ayrdale and inform the women there of the earl's execution…and to wed one of his daughters. Rose is determined to save her sister Starla, an aspiring nun, and tricks Dominic into marrying her. Set against the backdrop of the Magna Carta.

I was highly surprised at this book, since Connie Mason often includes a lot of betrayal, anger, and domination. This book didn't have that. Dominic never goes too far and doesn't fall for ruses. The only unlikeable plot device is Veronica as the scorned mistress.

an entertaining historical read.what bothered me about this book was how the hero was constantly comparing the heroine with his ex mistress!he was a little too carried away with her saying that the passion he shared with the OW was magical and unparallel.his behaviour with the OW is very confusing !further the book opens with a sex scene between hero and OW!so if you don't want to read sex scenes between hero and OW stay away!the heroine was lovely and very feisty!what I liked was that the hero was faithful to the heroine all along and never contemplated cheating even when his mistress came on to him.I just wish he was more clear with his feelings for OW.not a bad read but nothing great!

I very much enjoyed this historical romance. I liked Dominic (the Dragon Lord) and Rose exceedingly. Dominic was sexy and lusty. Rose was strong and yet vulnerable. Rose was everything that Dominic thought he didn't want in a woman, yet learned he could never live without. Rose didn't want to like Dominic, let alone love him but she couldn't deny the passion he stirred in her body. These two fight and deny what's happening between them with their minds, while their bodies refuse to deny the obvious. They were made for each other.

Dominic plans to marry his lusty mistress who meets all his sexual needs and doesn't make unnecessary demands on him. His King has other plans. When some of the border barons begin talking of going against their King, the King sends his trusted knight the Dragon to the border to marry and hold down that area.

Dominic isn't happy with the kings plans for him, but he wants to own land and gain the title of Baron. Reluctantly he leaves his mistresses bed and journey's to Ayrdale which he promptly renames Dragonwyck. He is presented with a widowed mother and her twin daughters - his three choices of wife. The grieving widow holds no interest for him. The daughters are both beautiful; one is meek the other a spit-fire. He decides he doesn't need the aggravation of a thorny wife, so he decides to take the meek sister as his wife. Rose (the thorny one) won't let her meek sister be taken by the Dragon, so she substitutes herself and marries Dominic. Before Dominic figures out he's been bamboozled, Rose's mother and sister are off to the convent where Dominic can't hurt them.

It doesn't take Dominic long to figure out he married the wrong sister or that he isn't upset about it. Rose holds his attention quite nicely and he's determined to draw out all her passion in bed. Rose tries to resist Dominic but her body turns to flame each and every time he touches her. She can't deny the lust her husband stirs in her and Dominic is thrilled with her bodies reactions to his touch.

Besides the bitter and shunned ex-mistress, there is greedy Scottish Uncle and his wicked step-son who prey on the couple and the King who ordered Rose's fathers execution. Kidnapping, spying, lust, hot sensual sex, deception and intrigue fill the pages of this historical romance. I loved it!

I thought it was a good book, YES Dragon was a jerk in the beginning but i think he redeem himself to Rose throughout the rest of the book and thought he should have been more stern with Veronica, Rose she was a hellion and i mean it in a good way she has guts and that fire in her belly that keeps her going and great love scenes and chemistry between Rose and Dragon.. of course has everyone knows its the typical twin switch, I hate you but now I love you kind of book but I thought Connie Mason did a good job on this book, it wasn't a WOW kind of book for me but i thought it was still good enough to give 4 stars..

If you like Connie Mason you'll love this book and know what to expect from her writing style and for the first timers they always try to leave a bad review when reading a Connie Mason novel for the first time no matter how good it is try reading a second one to see how you feel about the author and her writing style and I'm sure you have a favorite author who has written a couple of bad books them self.... This is not my typical reading fare, at least not now. But back when I was in college, I used to binge read historical romances like this one (and including this one, actually; I read it when it first came out in my junior year, way back in 2001). They were ridiculous and over the top and I couldn't get enough of them. There were a group of us who felt the same way about them, and we would buy stacks whenever we found them out in the wild (for me, that was usually the "fill a bag for $5" days at the Friends of the Library) and then trade them around until the covers literally fell off.

So this was one of those books, and when I found it free in the wild yet again (and once again, at a library sale), I had to take it and see if it had held up over the years.

It doesn't. It was ridiculous and over the top back when I was in college, and it's even more so now. The opening scene is Dragon having sex with his mistress, which isn't exactly how I want a romance novel to begin. And Rose and Dragon are ridiculous together - never communicating, always expecting the other to know what they are thinking, etc.

But I have to admit that it was still entertaining, if only because I was rolling my eyes through half of it.

The history is all sorts of messed up, as well, which I didn't appreciate in my first read through (I've just recently become interested in medieval history). Some of the names are, well, not exactly authentic to the time, shall we say. And the players in the historical events taking place in this book (the Articles of the Barons, which become the Magna Carta) are WAY too aware of the historical importance of what is going on. One of the main characters (I believe it is Rose, but perhaps it is Dominic) remarks at one point that the Articles of the Barons are likely to fundamentally change English relations with the king and will become a cornerstone of English law. That is so not what they were thinking at the time (for a great and in-depth look at the Magna Carta and how it evolved into the cornerstone of English law, which took hundreds of years, I would highly recommend Dan Jones' Magna Carta: The Birth of Liberty).

So yeah, this book was never meant to be a work of art, and it certainly doesn't read that way. But it brought back some nostalgia for me, so I can't give it one star.

I got this on a 2 for $5.98 shelf because I liked the time period, 1215 in England. The historical detail is very good. I enjoyed getting a look at the political machinations around the signing of the Magna Carta. In addition, the twin-switch plot is used more than once to good advantage. Finally, the hero has a good best friend and the heroine has a lot of guts.

That said, this book has definite flaws. First, the heroine makes some very stupid choices, almost in the too-stupid-to-live category. Next, there are too many sex scenes. Don't get me wrong. LOVE scenes (caps intentional) are an integral part of any romance. These scenes are meant to show growth--or failures--in intimacy between the two main characters. That can be accomplished in a few well-drawn LOVE scenes at critical places in the plot. Once the love is established, anything additional is just sexual page filler. This book has way too many that aren't particularly inventive or different. Frankly, I got bored with them.

I have no idea why I read this. I can't say I liked it very much, so it gets to be in *I didn't like it* category. It is more 1.5 than 1, but I don't feel generous at the moment. The plot is predictable. I won't retell the story since anyone can read the plot summary. The point is that it didn't do much for me. Sometimes I rate a book higher because it got to me. This one didn't.

This book grew on me and I really liked it. I think it will go on my Keeper-shelf. It has the potential to be a re-read

Rose was a bit childish and hateful in the beginning but she improved a lot till the end. I was a bit disappointed at her last "escape" as I thought it not necessary if she had just tried to talk to Dragon.

I was so glad that at there was not a real big misunderstanding in the end and that Connie Mason really worked on a plot - even if it was not the greatest one ;-)

all in all it was a really good read and I enjoyed the developments immensely.

A SOLID 3.5 STARS! A CLASSIC CONNIE MASON TILL THE END.

I'VE BEEN ON A CONNIE MASON READING BINGE AND I THINK THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVEN'T GOTTEN QUITE SICK OF READING THE SAME AUTHOR'S STORIES BOOK AFTER BOOK.

LORD DRAGON opens up the story fucking his mistress, which happens to be a signature to Connie Mason's stories LOL. Anyway, his King presents him with his own land Ayrdale but he also has to marry either the widow or her daughter at the same time - in order to spy on the other barons and keep an eye on those bound to rebel or are traitors to the crown. The political element in this book was heavier than the author's usual, and it made up for an interesting read. I'm too familiar with the history of Europe or its Monarch so I can't vouch if there's anything right or inaccurate about them, though I was purely more interested in the romance side. Dragon is reluctant to wed a woman he doesn't know or want, not when he had his heart and mind settled on marrying his mistress. I'd give him some credit that he at least was willing to set Veronica aside after marrying Rose. His marriage started off rocky, especially when he realizes that his wife is a twin. Unwilling to marry the feisty one, he chose the submissive sister only to be duped by Rose and ended up marrying the feisty (Rose) one instead. Dragon's relationship with Rose builds on lust before growing into something deeper and emotional, which I find happens to be the author's appealing point of her stories. Dragon's a typical historical hero who prefers to subdue women yet enjoys a willing wildcat in his bed, yet he's also possessive at times and dominating of his woman. Character wise, I guess he's pretty cardboard but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story.

ROSE is the headstrong twin in her family and she's determined to protect her mother and sister when Lord Dragon marches up to Ayrdale to seize it. Well, technically her father is dead and Ayrdale has been given to Dragon, with the condition that he also marries one of the eligible female of the family. Rose knows that Dragon doesn't want her, because she's too infuriating shrewish and assumed her sister's identity to fool the man into marrying her. Well, it's the usual twins folly when they switch places and no one will know the better. Like most of C.M's heroines, she will be expected to spurn the hero first before succumbing her virginity to passion. As much as it sounds degrading when a woman is slave to her passions instead of first earning the respect of her husband, I still can't help but enjoy that aspect of it LOL. It's kind of like a bodice ripper novel, except the hero isn't an asshole and can be tender-loving towards his wife. Rose definitely isn't a pushover and while she has her feminine antics at time, it adds to the 'drama' of the story.

OVERALL this was as enjoyable as any other Connie Mason story that you'll pick up. It has the same traits to most of her other books, but I must enjoy that kind of troupe since I have yet to get sick of the author's stories.

The book was so so. It was not bad but not really enjoyable either. It felt a bit like a mashed up version of this genre in that it brought nothing new at all. It's disappointing to me because it was not badly written and I respect authors for being able to produce something out of their imagination but this book was too cliché : the lord is all bark but no bite and the heroine always deals with the same issues without making a real stand. Instead of having a discussion like a couple normally does, it's just her doing dumb things and being forgiven by the hero. Neither her nor him progress in the least and all the other characters have no personality, they are just here to play figurant and have no role in the story. The plot with the king could have been developed further instead of all these almost rape scenes that our heroine has to live through. All in all, I don't really recommend it because I felt nothing AT ALL while reading it.
Better luck next time, I guess.

So, uh, this is a book. It is a book about. . ..something, but I can't quite figure it out. Better put some more gratuitous boring smut scenes before anyone figures out that it isn't about anything.

Not only was there absolutely no plot, the writing was just cringey. The writing felt very immature and somehow juvenile, which is an oxymoron with the content. It could have been the sentence structure or length, or it could have been the word choices, or the repetition. But whatever it was, it was boring and was probably somewhere around an elementary grade reading level. With all that smut, it just felt wrong.

Starts out with the hero plowing his mistress, so that is always fun. And with the lack of plot, it was a lot of ow/om drama.

Oh, and the characters are garbage. She's supposed to be some warrior woman and she is like a limp noodle.

Tried to include some historical events and they were tacked on as an after thought.

This was good, but not great. If the intent was to imitate the great bodice-rippers from the 70's-80's then I say mission failed successfully. There were some elements that were reminescent of BR but I found this somehow lacking in readder-induced emotiond, it was painfully predictable. I also didn't like how much sex the MC's were having, it grew fucking tiresome. The ending, although historically accurate, felt quite anticlimatic, and in all honesty slightly boring. However, I did like the quotes about roses included at the beginning of each chapter. They fit within the events of the chapter and it was a nice little detail.

"The Dragon Lord" by Connie Mason is a captivating and enchanting novel that transports readers to a world of intense romance and unforgettable characters.

At the heart of this tale are the hero, Dominic the Lord Dragon, and the feisty heroine, Rose. Their dynamic and passionate relationship and y heir interactions crackle with electricity, as they navigate the tumultuous landscape of their emotions and the challenges that surround them.

The intense romance that unfolds between Dominic and Rose is the driving force of the story. Connie Mason expertly crafts their emotional journey, balancing fiery passion with moments of vulnerability and tenderness.

Give it a chance!

Okay, you could skip this if you're looking for a super angsty and interesting book.
I thought this would be angsty - it's not and I thought the Hero would be this alpha man - he's not. He's soft and sensitive yada yada yada which makes this book a bore. Was expecting some bit of tension between the couple but alas, as soon as the couple gets physical with each other, it's over aka boring and everything was blurred into the background. Not really worth it.

SPOILERS

I enjoyed the book thoroughly because it was a case where the male romantic lead finds himself forced to marry a seemingly headstrong and unappealing girl only to realize later that he has fallen in love with his wife and he accidentally married the love of his life.

One huge question still haunts me though:

Why didn't King John know that there were twin daughters?

Love this book, I read it years ago when it came out and decided I wanted to read it again. Love the history intertwined with the romance. The fierce Dragon Lord brought to his knees by his thorny Rose. Connie Mason is a wonderful story teller.
