When Robert, Lord Devonbrook, loses all he owns in a conflagration, he moves to a remote castle in Scotland, where he meets an heiress in hiding who attempts to restore his happiness with the help of some magical heather. Original.

I truly enjoyed this book. An English Duke's son is one of the only survivors of a tragic fire, and soon has tongues wagging that he did it to get the dukedom. But a terrible injury he receives leaves this in doubt, as he leaves England ad goes to his father's other estate in Scotland to learn to live with his disability and find peace. A young crofter's daughter becomes his friend, both unkowing her true heritage, and her strength and caring soon change the duke's life and give him a reason to live and also to love again. Two mysteries are in this book which make it even more exciting. and you have no idea what will happen until the end. Highly recommended for romance and Scotland lovers.
Too often we let our trials define us. Lord Robert Edenhall, now the Duke of Devonbrook and the laird of Rosmorigh, has done just that. He has slipped away from London after a terrible family tragedy, that left him with more than his grief to adjust to. He is bogged down with anger, frustration, and is barrel full of questions about the night his world changed. His family was warm, caring, and supportive.
Catriona MacBryan, is bright, cheerful, intuitive and always looking for adventure. She has a good family life, if a bit tenuous financially, but together she and her family manage to get by. She visits the castle of Rosmorigh in hopes of finding a key to a map, that legend says hides a treasure.
When Robert and Catriona meet she doesn't let Robert off the hook because of his difficulty. She expects him to step up and continue on. Their conversations are fun and fast paced. Robert finds himself "seeing" things differently the more time they spend together. They are good together.
The villains in this story seem to multiply. We have the one from Catriona's Past she doesn't know about, friends we thought we knew, people who have served family's for years and others who we barely knew. The twists and turns kept the pages turning. The final comeuppance was satisfying and had me quietly cheering (I was on a plane). There were several surprises that had me shaking my head that I missed them, but it was a pleasant surprise.
This is the first book by this author I have read, but I will be looking for more. Her wit, insight and fast pace kept my attention and left me wanting more.

Robert - second son to a duke, proud military man and passionate art collector - loses nearly everything including his sight the night the ducal seat burns down. Refusing the ton’s pity and accusations, he retreats to his father’s Scottish castle where he can peacefully wallow in darkness. That is, until an unexpected visitor shows him the light once more…
Catriona - vivacious Scottish country lass in love with legends, the quest for a hidden treasure and the portrait of a man in a castle’s library where she’s not supposed to be. When she unexpectedly is caught by said man and fails at spooking him away, she’s intrigued. Even more so when he asks for her assistance.
Careful friendship turns into an attraction neither of them can deny. And just when things start to look up, tragedy strikes once again. The secret of her birth and his unsolved mystery, put both of them in danger. Now, forced together into his world, can their fragile bond survive?
📚 A touching tale of loyalty and unconditional love woven through with tragedy, clandestine dealings, greed, jealousy, secrets and murderous villains. He’s charmed by her unwillingness to treat him as anything other than a regular man. She’s unimpressed by his title and unafraid to speak her mind, to give him the push he needs to pick up his life again. I really loved both these fascinating layered characters, and their pure and uncomplicated romance! The steam may be fade to black, but to be honest, with an action-packed, compelling and steadily unravelling plot like this one, I didn’t miss it a bit. Thrilling and enthralling, it kept me spellbound till the very end! First released in 1997, this was an excellent read and the other books in this series are definitely going on my wishlist!
After a fire destroys his family, their home and his impending nuptials, Robert Edenhall sequesters himself in a remote Scottish estate called Rosmorigh. Before his arrival, a young woman has been scaring people away from the castle, so that she can find a treasure map without prying eyes interrupting her. Catriona MacBryan encounters the new duke, now blind, hidden in the darkness of the library. The author writes a romance with several mysteries to be solved. The circumstances of Catriona’s birth, her weak twin brother’s whereabouts, her biological mother’s family and a villainous heir are all unknown to her for the past 22 years. What’s the treasure that she is seeking? In regards to the new Duke of Devonbrook - is his blindness permanent? Was the fire accidental? Did his father have enemies? These are questions to which answers are parced out slowly by the author. This is a sweet clean romance accompanied by mysteries, a little action, and numerous fascinating supporting characters. This is the first work that I’ve read by this author and I will continue to the next novel in this series “White Magic”. 4 stars ⭐️, because I thought the loves scenes ended rather abruptly, only to have the story move in another direction away from the lovers. I have received an ARC from Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
I enjoyed this book. The characters are complex, the conflicts are difficult, and the HEA is satisfying.
After a tragic fire that kills his father, older brother, pregnant sister-in-law, five year old nephew, and his valet, the new Duke, Robert Edenhall, must cope with life as a blind man. He retreats to an estate in Scotland after rumors that he had set the fire began circulating in society.
Catriona MacBryan is unaware that she is the daughter of the former laird and his noble wife. She is raised by her mother's midwife and her husband on another laird's estate. She has been spending time in the estate library, reading and looking for a written treasure map.
The two meet in the library and form a friendship. They gradually develop a romantic relationship and work together to solve the problems facing them.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading Regency romance novels.

Catriona's story is woven deftly with Robert's as we are drawn into their worlds. Each of their stories starts with unrelated, heartbreaking situations. As we get to know them and they get to know each other, we're drawn into mystery and adventure with twists and turns in just the right places.
This is the second book I've read by Jaclyn Reding and I'm already in the middle of a third because I loved this one so much!.

Catriona loves going to the old castle to read the books even at the risk and of being caught until she is by a blind duke. Robert asks her to be his eyes, reading his letters, and helping search his home because he has servants he doesn’t trust and I can understand why. The book started off dark and has elements with smugglers, cruel landowners, and someone who will stop at nothing including multiple murders to keep their inheritance. There were magical elements with the white heather. The romance between Catriona and Robert escalated quickly.
The book grabs you from the beginning. The intrigue starts right away!
Robert loses almost everything in a fire. He goes off to one of his properties-one he didn’t even know existed. There he meets Catriona, a local Scottish girl. But she has secrets-even more than she knows.
I loved the intrigue, romance, and characters in this book. A highly recommended read.

A real treasure hunt this is! There are many treasures to be discovered. Not the least among them what comes between a lost man and a vibrant woman. The hunt takes them from the evil gossip of the Ton in London to the highlands of Scotland. Murder, betrayal, secrets, and lies scatter the way to the truth. Don't miss this one there is a reason it is an award winning book. Enjoy.
I like this story, it's heavy on the mystery side with it's intriguing puzzles pieces and is both exciting and sad emotionally. Great characters with the greed of the elite being well interwoven in the magical adventure of discovery, secrets revealed and true love. White Heather is the first book in the Regency Rakes, I know I want to read the next book. Robert Edenhall, the Duke of Devonbrook and Catriona MacBryan's story grabbed my interest from the start and did not let go until I had finished reading. This is the first Reding book I've read and surely won't be the last! The story is magically woven with secret identities, pain, tragedy, mystery, treasure, strong women, heroes, and evil men. I don't know how JR included it all, but this book, set in lovely Scotland, is a gem. Enjoy!
The hero has lost his whole family and his sight in a fire. The heroine wants him to enjoy life again. They have some interesting interactions. It was a nice read. It is the first in a series.

Finally found a book in Unlimited that is truly worth five stars. No steamy sex scenes that I found is refreshing. (I do like me some heat.) Good story some surprises and not so surprising. Give this romance a try, you won't regret it.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were unique and the description of the homes and country side were interesting. However please note that a squab is not a meat to eat. Spelling may be incorrect.
Great descriptions from other reviewers. This story was mesmerizing! It started off with a bang, pulled you in and did not let you go until the final paragraph. Excellent writing and editing. Great pacing and character development. A solid 5 star read.
