In this novel about Tim Duncan, written by Sean Adams. The author depicts Tim Duncan's very well by telling the reader about Tim's unique childhood and not a very "normal" NBA All-Star life. Adams talks about Duncans childhood: where he grew up and how he developed, he talked about Tim's college years in the states, and his Hall of Fame Career in the NBA (National Basketball Association.)
Tim grew up in Saint Croix, one of The U.S. Virgin Islands. Duncan was a smart kid and did well in school. While growing up with only his mother and two sisters he was driven and wanted to become a swimmer in the United States Olympics. Saint Croix only had one Olympic Sized swimming pool on the entire island and when hurricane Hugo struck, it destroyed the pool. Tim had an encouraging coach for swimming and he told Tim that although he was afraid to swim in the ocean, he must do it to keep in shape and to be able to hold on to his records. Tim's coach, known as "Manske," did all he could to encourage Tim that he must swim, that was his path to a better life. But Tim did not listen. He would not risk swimming in the Ocean. If things weren't bad enough, Tim's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away just before Tim Started high school. Tim went to work and now that he had given up on swimming he started playing basketball. He knew he was tall and all of his teachers recommended he join the team. Tim played basketball all four years of high school and earned several scholarships among them, Wake Forest offered and Duncan accepted. This was a start of something new and a chance to make his family proud.
When Tim arrived at Wake Forest he was almost 7 feet tall and very thin. However, his coach had faith that he would make it work. Tim worked hard in practice and pushed himself in the classroom his coach said. (Tim was studying psychology) After Duncan's sophomore year, NBA coaches were saying he could be a first round draft pick if he wanted to come to the draft after that season. Tim, being the driven person he was, did not want to give up an education for money. He wanted to graduate college before even thinking about the pros. He owed it to his mother who used to tell him that nobody can ever take your education away, get your education before anything. Sure enough, Duncan got his 4 year diploma and was selected the number 1 overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1997 draft.
Duncan came into the league with high expectations and his rookie year, he met his individual expectations but not what he had wanted to achieve as a team. The next year, David Robinson a former number one overall pick and All Star himself, returned to the lineup off of an injury and the season was on. In The 1998 playoffs, Duncan led his team to the playoffs in only his second year in the league. With a bounce back year in 1999 Tim led the spurs to the finals and won the title after knocking off the New York Knicks. Duncan was named finals MVP and already was a star in the league. Tim did not disappoint and definitely made his name known to everyone.
