A DUKE FOR ALL SEASONS!

What’s better than a dashing duke? A dozen of them! In this case, a baker’s dozen—thirteen of your favorite historical romance authors have come together to bring you more than a dozen tantalizing novellas, with one per month, for a year’s worth of never-before-released romances.

January – Duke in Winter by Alyssa Alexander — When the highwayman demanded that the Duke of Highrow stand and deliver, he didn’t know she would steal his heart.

February – The Difference One Duke Makes by Elizabeth Essex — All it takes is one frosty night for two imperfect people, former naval commander Marcus Beecham and ruined Penelope Pease, to meet and make the perfect February Valentine.

March – Discovering the Duke by Madeline Martin — Reunited at a house party after a lackluster start to their marriage, the Duke of Stedton attempts to win his Duchess’ heart. Will a sizzling wager be enough to melt the frost between them, or will it truly remain the coldest winter in London?

April – The Duke and the April Flowers by Grace Burrowes — The Duke of Clonmere must marry one of the Earl of Falmouth’s three giggling younger daughters, but Lady Iris—Falmouth’s oldest, who is not at all inclined to giggling—catches Clonmere’s eye, and his heart!

May – Love Letters from a Duke by Gina Conkle — The Duke of Richland needs a proper duchess, but he wants his thoroughly fun, entirely inappropriate neighbor, Mrs. Charlotte Chatham. She’s widowed, older, and if the whispers prove true—barren.

June – Her Perfect Duke by Ella Quinn — Still suffering over the loss of his wife and child, Giles, Duke of Kendal sees Lady Thalia Trevor at a market and is instantly smitten. There is only one problem. She is already betrothed to another man. Will she defy her powerful father to marry him?

July – How to Ditch a Duke by May McGoldrick — Lady Taylor Fleming is an heiress with a suitor on her tail. Her plan to ditch him is simple, escape to the Highlands. But there is nothing simple about the Duke of Bamberg. And even with the best laid plans, things can go awry…

August – To Tempt A Highland Duke by Bronwen Evans — Widowed Lady Flora Grafton must be dreaming. Dougray Firth, Duke of Monreith, who once pledged her his heart but then allowed her to marry another, has just proposed. Why now, after eight years? When she learns the truth, can she trust Dougray to love her enough this time?

September – Duke in Search of a Duchess by Jennifer Ashley — The meticulous Duke of Ashford is dismayed when his children ask Helena Courtland, the gossipy, busybody young widow next door, to find Ash a new wife. But she sweeps into his home and his life, turning Ash’s precisely ordered world into a chaotic whirlwind.

October – Dear Duke by Anna Harrington — When the Duke of Monmouth, decides to build a canal, he isn’t prepared for an old mill owner and his daughter to stand in his way. The only person who understands him is the anonymous pen pal to whom he’s been pouring out his heart, a woman not at all who she seems.

November – Must Love Duke by Heather Snow — Lady Emmaline Paulson already has the only Duke she wants in her life—an adorable puppy she rescued from the Serpentine with the help of a handsome stranger. Can Maxwell Granville, heir to a dukedom, convince her there’s room for him, too?

December – The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York — The Duchess of Devon can't think of a better way to tempt her widowed son into marrying again, than to throw a Christmas Ball. And there simply must be mistletoe everywhere! But it's not until Jonathan meets his mother's humble companion under the mistletoe, that fireworks erupt.

January – Dueling with the Duke by Eileen Dreyer — When Adam Marrick, Duke of Rothray, shows up on Georgie Grace’s doorstep, she thinks it is to become acquainted with his cousin James’s widow and daughter. Instead he brings news that will completely upend their lives and put them all in danger.

And it's done!

While not all the novellas rated 5 stars, those that did were so stellar that I feel justified in giving the anthology a 5-star rating overall. With such a bevvy of fantastic historical romance authors, it was to be expected, but I am astounded at the results. If you like historical romance, are a fan of any of the authors', or want to discover new authors - or even give historical romance a try, you could not wish for a better collection.

January – Duke in Winter by Alyssa Alexander

Miss Beatrice Falk is a spinster and at night the Honorable Highwayman, a sort of Robin Hood. Falk Manor is hosting a house party, and Beatrice knows she can divest one of the guests of their gambling earnings. The man she encounters is Wulfric Sandover, Duke of Highrow, and things don't go quite as planned. I'm amazed at how flawlessly Alyssa Alexander weaves a quantity of relevant information into the narrative, and how cleverly it is done. This novella could easily have been expanded into a full-length novel, allowing more time for the relationship to develop, but the happy-for-now proved to be a satisfactory conclusion.

February – The Difference One Duke Makes by Elizabeth Essex

Summoned back to London after ten years at sea, Commander Marcus Beecham has now more reasons to hate the City. Until he is reunited with Miss Penelope Pease; it feels like old times, when they were fourteen and thirteen: Beech and Pease Porridge. I will not say one more word about the plot, and let you experience all the fabulous twists and turns in this delightful story. Both characters are utterly charming, the story unfolds at a brisk pace, and the dialogues are bright and witty. This marvellous novella is such great fun and a joy to read from beginning to end.

March – Discovering the Duke by Madeline Martin

The morning after his wedding night, William Sinclair, Duke of Stedton, bolted. After two weeks without any news, Julia, William's duchess, accepts an invitation to a house party in the country, where she hopes for a happy reconciliation with her husband. But can she trust him? I suspect this novella ties in with a series, because of the numerous characters, although it was never baffling. Julia and William both have issues, but I felt there were too many misunderstandings for the length of the story. There is surprisingly quite a lot going on, besides the party activities. The writing is truly lovely, and the author's knowledge of the Regency era is spot-on. As expected, seduction is the name of the game, but it is very tastefully done.

April – The Duke and the April Flowers by Grace Burrowes

Lady Iris Fallon had been relegated to chaperone her three younger stepsisters because their father wants one of the "girls" to snag the Duke of Clonmere. But it is Iris who mesmerises him. Iris wants the best for her sisters, she wishes the duke would be hers, but loyalty is everything! Who will be the lucky duchess? This story is one of those rare instances where I believed in love at first sight because Iris is magnificent, and Henning, the duke, is adorable! This novella is Grace Burrowes at her very best: scintillating dialogues, literate and graceful prose enlivened with her irresistible sense of humour. The several equally wonderful characters add substance to the romance. This novella is charming, light, and so very clever; an outstanding read!

May – Love Letters from a Duke by Gina Conkle

They had noticed each other two years ago, and Nathaniel, the Duke of Richland, is still completely infatuated with his neighbour, the fetching Charlotte Chatham. Alas, she's older than him, so wrong, but nobody else seems right. Charlotte is just as smitten with the duke, but it's hopeless. Or is it? What a glorious love story! I loved that Charlotte was assertive and that Nathaniel was fine with it. In this novella, we find Gina Conkle at her most lyrical: the air crackles with delicate sensuality; the lovely period details confer authenticity to the setting; and there is a golden glow about the writing that conveys the warmth of a sunny spring day. Nathaniel and Charlotte are wonderfully appealing characters, and I loved Nathaniel's mother; it was so nice to see a loving family. This is such a pleasant, sensuous, and ever so romantic story; absolutely gorgeous!

June – Her Perfect Duke by Ella Quinn

The situation is even more complicated than it first appeared, as Lady Thalia's father arranged her marriage for his personal gain. When she meets the charming Giles at a Midsummer's night fair, she feels he's the one, but what to do about her father and the upcoming nuptials to a man she doesn't know? That's where the numerous characters come in and, through their machinations, they make the romance happen. There is a lightning courtship, and Giles and Thalia get acquainted while the author inserts all sorts of pertinent historical details. The bulk of the story resides in friends and relatives running around and scheming in order for the romance to reach its happy ending. The Author Notes, I must add, are most enlightening.

July – How to Ditch a Duke by May McGoldrick

This is a shorter novella, but there is much substance to be found, as within a few paragraphs, we get the gist of Taylor's family dynamics, and it's not pretty. This story has a most unusual and absolutely fabulous meet-cute. I was entirely enamoured with Franz, the duke, upon first meeting him, and I loved him even more as we learn about him. Taylor, because of her despicable father, is more than hesitant. This is a terrific story; Franz and Taylor are magnificent characters, as are Millie and Dermot McKendry,Taylor's friends. The dialogues are brilliant, there's a bit of history, and what fun to have an Austrian duke with a Scottish lass!

August – To Tempt A Highland Duke by Bronwen Evans

This novella, I'm afraid, was not a good match for me. I found some parts confusing, and everything felt rushed: the story, the writing, and the editing. The blurb gives some idea of what to expect, but the premise is one I do not enjoy; I cannot say more, for fear of giving away spoilers. It's all a matter of taste, so I'll let you be the judge.

September – Duke in Search of a Duchess by Jennifer Ashley

Since the death of his wife, Augustine Ferrand, the Duke of Ashford, lives by his rigorous schedule. Even his three children are fed up with it, and they decide it's time Ash remarry. His son Lewis presents him with a list of attributes Ash should look for in a wife. The widow next door, the vivacious Mrs. Helena Courtland, will help him choose his bride. Or at least try, because Ash is as rigid as his timetable and she disturbs his precious routine. This novella is simply marvellous! Every character is a delight: Helena sparkles and shines, her glowing radiance in sharp contrast to Ash's stiff grumpiness. The children are great; Guy, Ash's friend is a wonderful charmer; and Helena is a dream of a heroine! The prose is vibrant and elegant, the dialogues are superb: witty, clever, and wildly entertaining. It concluded a bit abruptly, but it is such a spectacular ride to the happily-ever-after, I didn't mind one bit! Sit back and enjoy!

October – Dear Duke by Anna Harrington

Miss Cora Bradley is on the warpath: she will not let the Duke of Monmouth close the family mill. If only she knew the identity of her mysterious and understanding correspondent! Be still, my heart! The author, once again, shows how well she masters the art of the novella. Her prose is refined and polished, and so dynamic that the story moves briskly while we get bits of history, the protagonists' backstories, and a condensed novel. This novella consists of tropes for which I care little, and it is absolutely glorious! This is how you do it! I loved that the letters were included, they were meaningful; and how it all starts is so wonderful. Both characters are very engaging, and I even laughed out loud a few times. This is a witty, lovely, utterly irresistible romance. Take a moment and have a look at the Author's Note; I was pleased that Ms. Harrington included information that seems to have been forgotten along the years.

November – Must Love Duke by Heather Snow

Lady Emmaline Paulson's father insists she marry a duke, but what will she do when she realises her heart belongs to the stranger who helped her rescue a dog? Max and Emmaline are so cute, and such nice people that I was rooting for them right from the start. There is a very clever and unusual mystery in this novella, I'm not sure if I had ever seen it before, and best of all it relies on the author's knowledge of English aristocracy; I loved it! Even though it's on the short side, nothing is missing. We will get Lady Amelia's story, Emmaline's sister, in an upcoming novella, and I cannot wait. This is a riveting and oh so so very romantic story!

December – The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York

The Duke of Devon's mother has planned a lavish Christmas house party to find a bride for her son, Jonathan, and a mother for his two unruly daughters. She also hopes to secure a match for her companion, Meg Chalmers. Meg and Jonathan had been childhood friends, and I felt bad for Meg. Jonathan had had all the fun while she slowly wilted away. It made me sad, but I guess it's a question of perspective. In spite of the mistletoe, the atmosphere is not all that Christmassy, so the story can easily be enjoyed any time of the year. This novella offers a clear picture of a Regency house party, but it is a little short on the romance.

January – Dueling with the Duke by Eileen Dreyer

What a great story this is, it's a shame that it had to be compressed into a novella. The plot is quite intricate, and the writing is excellent. The beginning is a lot of fun, and had me giggling, then it becomes more serious as Adam reveals to Georgie the purpose of his visit. The characters are surprisingly well defined, and the women are towers of strength. The romance takes a backseat to the drama, but the attraction between Adam and Georgia is undeniable, and it worked well. There's also the fabulous Murphy, the dog, and adorable little Lully, Georgie's daughter. There is quite a bit going on, and I loved how the author was able to recreate such a realistic feeling of a more or less normal Regency household.

Dukes by the Dozen was a delightful collection of thirteen stories all centered around Dukes finding love. I ended up enjoying some stories more than others, but I think overall the collection is a good one and I would recommend it.

Overall average rating — 3.5 Stars

Duke in Winter by Alyssa Alexander — 2 Stars

Wulfric Sandover, Duke of Highrow, is waylaid one snowy night by the Honorable Highwayman. When the pair are forced to take shelter from a storm, Wulf discovers the Honorable Highwayman is a woman, a Miss Beatrice Falk. This story was just okay for me. There are a couple of steamy sex scenes, but there was very little time for anything real to develop between Wulf and Bea. Also the story has an open ending which I’m not a fan of, but I suppose does fit with the story taking place over only one night. Overall while I was intrigued by the idea of a female highwayman, this story was not for me.

The Difference One Duke Makes by Elizabeth Essex — 3 Stars

Marcus Beecham, a formal naval commander, would much rather be still at sea than dealing with inheriting a dukedom upon his brother’s passing. But after becoming reacquainted with Miss Penelope Pease, Marcus is rethinking things. I’m a sucker for a second chance at love romance and this novella has hints of that trope which I enjoyed. The story moved along at a quick pace with some great banter between Marcus and Penelope. One thing that did irritate me was Marcus’s stupid childhood nickname for Penelope of Pease Porridge which is what he referred to her as. Overall this was an enjoyable story but there wasn’t anything special to make it stand out for me.

Discovering the Duke by Madeline Martin — 4 Stars

The morning after their wedding, the Duke of Stedton left on business and has not seen his Duchess for two weeks. But with the pair both attending a house party in the country, it’s the perfect chance for William to win Julia over. This writing in this novella is fantastic and the author immediately had me rooting for William to win Julia over. Both William and Julia have their own insecurities but they were open with each other about them which I appreciated. The sex scenes in this story were very well done and were quite steamy. My only complaint was that there was quite a bit of drama in such a short amount of time. Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I will be checking out this author in the future.

The Duke and the April Flowers by Grace Burrowes — 4.5 Stars

Due to a promise by his late father, the Duke of Clonmere must marry one of the Earl of Falmouth’s younger daughters. But upon meeting Iris, the Earl’s oldest daughter, Henning is immediately smitten and knows Iris is the perfect choice. Grace Burrowes is one of only four authors in this collection that I’ve previously read so I was looking forward to her novella. Iris and Henning are perfectly suited to one another and I loved their scenes together. My favorite aspect of the story was how Henning introduced Iris’s sisters to men perfectly suited for them in hopes they would find matches of their own while he pursued Iris. Overall this was another delightful read from Grace Burrowes and I’m looking forward to reading more from her soon.

Love Letters from a Duke by Gina Conkle — 3 Stars

The Duke of Richland is hosting a house party in the hopes of finding an appropriate young lady to be his duchess. But the only person Nathan wants is his neighbor, Mrs. Charlotte Chatham. I enjoyed this novella and how it focused on an unusual pairing, a duke and a widow several years older than him. My one complaint about this story was that Nathan and Charlotte had essentially already fallen for each other prior to the start of the story. I prefer to see the couple fall in love on page, which I know can be tricky in such a short story, as it helps me get invested in the romance. Overall I enjoyed the writing so I will be checking out more from this author in the future.

Her Perfect Duke by Ella Quinn — 3.5 Stars

Giles, the Duke of Kendal, is slowly finding his way forward in life after the loss of his wife and daughter. But after meeting Lady Thalia Trevor at a market, Giles is immediately smitten and knows she’s the one for him. The only problem? She’s betrothed to another man. This novella was delightful and chock-full of charming side characters via Thalia’s huge family. I enjoyed how Thalia’s entire family got involved in helping Thalia and Giles obtain their happily ever after. The scheming and plotting scenes were wonderfully done with many humorous moments. My one complaint was how instantly the pair fell in love as I would have liked a bit more build up on that front. Overall though this was a very fun read and I will be reading more from the author in the future.

How to Ditch a Duke by May McGoldrick — 4 Stars

After a chance meeting, the Duke of Bamberg knew Lady Taylor Fleming was the woman for him. Now he just has to convince her of that, but she’s been dodging him for the past three months. This novella loosely connects to the authors’ Pennington Family series as Taylor is friends with one of the Pennington daughters who she goes to stay with while evading the Duke. I really enjoyed the story in this one and I loved Bamberg and Taylor’s first meeting. The pair were clearly smitten with each other and I loved the scheme Millie concocted to get the pair alone so they could work everything out. Each chapter had one of Taylor’s steps for ditching a duke and I found them delightful and fun. If you enjoy this story I highly recommend checking out the Pennington Family series.

To Tempt A Highland Duke by Bronwen Evans — 2 Stars

Lady Flora Grafton has loved Dougray Firth, the Duke of Monreith, for most of her life. But after Dougray walked away eight years ago and let her marry another, she has trouble believing him when he says he has always loved her and now wishes to marry her. This story didn’t really work for me as it’s not a premise I typically enjoy in my romances. My main issue was that I found Dougray’s reasoning for walking away from Flora to be unsatisfactory. I likely would have sympathized with him more if he had a legitimate excuse for walking away but he just didn’t have that in my opinion. I also wasn’t a fan of how quickly Flora forgave him as I expected her to put up more of a fight. Overall this just wasn’t for me as it wasn’t the type of romance I typically enjoy.

Duke in Search of a Duchess by Jennifer Ashley — 4 Stars

The Duke of Ashford likes his regimented life and is a firm believer in timetables. So when his children enlist the help of his neighbor Helena Courtland to find him a new wife, Ashford is appalled by the chaos Helena leaves in her wake. I loved the pairing of Ashford and Helena right from the start. She’s impulsive and effervescent while Ashford is typically seen as a stick in the mud. Ashford does care deeply about his children but after the death of his wife, he found sticking to a rigid schedule helped keep him sane and so he follows it to the extreme. I loved the reactions Helena was able to draw out in Ashford and I really enjoyed the banter between them. Overall this was an enjoyable read and I will definitely be checking out the author again in the future.

Dear Duke by Anna Harrington — 4 Stars

The new Duke of Monmouth isn’t a man who’s used to being idle, so he takes up a project to build a canal. With the canal all but complete, he runs into a problem when a mill owner and his daughter refuse to sell their land. A big element to this novella is anonymous letters being left which is one I enjoy. The author’s note mentions this novella is a Georgian adaptation of You’ve Got Mail which is one of my favorite movies. I loved that the author used that as inspiration and I adored the similarities between the two. I thought John and Cora worked well together despite being on opposing sides and I loved the chemistry they had. Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I’d recommend the author’s other books if you enjoy it.

Must Love Duke by Heather Snow — 5 Stars

Lady Emmaline Paulson’s father is determined his youngest daughter will land a Duke, but the only Duke Emmaline wants in her life is the puppy she rescued with the help of a handsome stranger. But what Emmaline doesn’t know if that her handsome stranger is heir to a dukedom. I absolutely loved this novella and it was my favorite story in the collection. I really enjoyed the scene where Emmaline and Max saved the puppy as well as their daily walks together in the park. The pair manage to get to know one another and fall for each other without knowing the other’s true identity which isn’t a plot I’ve come across many times before but it was perfectly suited to the shortness of the story. I will definitely be checking out the author’s other works in the future.

The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York — 3 Stars

The Duke of Devon has no interest in marrying again after the loss of his wife, but his mother is determined to see him happy again. And what better way to find him a new wife than to throw a house party with a Christmas ball. I’m a sucker for second chance at love romances and this story has hints of that. Meg grew up in the same area as the Duke and they were friends throughout their childhood with Meg having a secret crush on the Duke for most of her life. I had a few issues with the Duke in this story such as how at times he would think things that were ultimately unkind about Meg and he would inadvertently insult her. Overall I thought this was a sweet Christmas story and I would recommend it.

Dueling with the Duke by Eileen Dreyer — 3.5 Stars

Georgie Grace’s simple life is about to be upended when her late husband’s cousin, the Duke of Rothray, shows up on her doorstep with some surprising news regarding Georgie’s daughter. This novella has a lot going on despite its’ short length. Adam arrives to give Georgie news, but to Adam’s surprise she refuses to accept what he tells her. I really enjoyed the back and forth between Adam and Georgie and the chemistry between the pair was fantastic. My only big complaint with the story was I didn’t like how things with Georgie’s family were resolved. Overall it was an enjoyable read though and I will definitely be checking out the author’s other books in the future.

Duke In Winter by Alyssa Alexander
I really enjoyed this story about the Honest Highwayman and the Duke. It was fun and unique. It ended a little too abruptly for my tastes though. I would have enjoyed an epilogue and found out what happened to their relationship afterwards. It was an entertaining story otherwise.

The Difference One Duke Makes by Elizabeth Essex
Penelope and Marcus were the perfect pair; both imperfect in their own way however perfect together. This was another enjoyable story in this anthology.

Discovering The Duke by Madeline Martin
I loved this story! I especially loved the fact that William and Julia were married and that the story was about them working on their relationship and their fears. William had my heart right from the start and I really wanted to pull out Lady Venerton’s hair, several times in fact! She was definitely not a nice lady! Madeline Martin has always been one of my go to authors and she never disappoints. I also love the fact that she included an epilogue! This was my favorite story in the anthology.

The Duke And The April Flowers by Grace Burrowes
The Duke of Clonmere was such an honorable man, I absolutely loved him. He had to choose one of the Falmouth sisters to be his duchess and the way he went about it was quite ingenious. This was such a sweet story I really enjoyed it and Iris was such a sweetheart I couldn’t help but like her the best.

Love Letters From A Duke by Gina Conkle
Another sweet story. Mrs. Chatham and The Duke Of Richland’s story was enjoyable and sweet. I do wish there had been an epilogue though.

Her Perfect Duke by Ella Quinn
I really enjoyed Lady Thalia and The Duke Of Kendal’s story. It was exciting and well written. It would be interesting to read her sister’s stories as well. I also liked the fact that here was a short paragraph at the end about the couple one month later.

How To Ditch A Duke by May McGoldrick
Wow, another most enjoyable story in this anthology. I really liked the main characters in this one and enjoyed the storyline very much. I didn’t blame Lady Taylor for not wanting to marry a man whom she thought only wanted her for her money. My heart went out to her for the life she had because of her family. I really liked The Duke and was happy when he was finally given the chance to speak to Taylor. A very enjoyable story!

To Tempt A Highland Duke by Bronwen Evans
I truly loved Dougray and Flora’s story. Dougray loved Flora so much he was willing to give her up to save her life. Flora never stopped loving Dougray but could she trust him after he had already broken her heart once? This was such an enjoyable story and I loved that there was an epilogue…I wish all authors would include an epilogue!

Duke In Search Of A Duchess by Jennifer Ashley
Oh this was such a sweet story. The Duke Of Ashford’s children were adorable and Mrs. Coutland was feisty and likeable at the same time. Another very enjoyable story.

Dear Duke by Anna Harrington
The Duke Of Monmouth and Cora, the miller’s daughter, had no idea they were the ones exchanging notes. What would happen when they found out? This was a very sweet and most enjoyable story.

Must Love Duke by Heather Snow
I really liked Max and Emmaline’s story and really enjoyed the fact that a puppy brought them together. However it was disappointing that the story felt unfinished at the end.

The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York
This story was delightful! I loved the twins and Jonathan and Meg were so sweet together. There were many secondary characters in this story who made it interesting as well. This one was definitely one of my favorite of this collection.

Dueling With The Duke by Eileen Dreyer
Adam Marrick the Duke of Rothray and Georgie Grace’s story was another enjoyable story. Little Lilly Charlotte and Murphy the dog added a lot to the story as did the servants in Georgie’s household.

This was a wonderful collection of stories and each had its own unique spin which made it worth reading. I enjoyed each and every story in this anthology. It is definitely well worth picking up!

Overall, this was a disappointing collection. There were a few authors that had interesting writing styles that were potentially underserved by the necessary shortness of their pieces, but the repetitive nature of "duke stories" got a little exhausting by the end.

Duke in Winter, Alyssa Alexander (January)
Lady Beatrice Falk is UNDERCOVER. Her (night) job is the Honorable Highwayman: the bandit who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Except she shoots old family friend Wulfric Standover, Duke of Highrow, in the shoulder while attempting to steal his cash. They bone. He discovers her undercover identity and they decide it's LOVE.

This was rushed and sloppy. It didn't have enough foundational elements to make it mean anything other than instantaneous lust and a forced happy ever after. 2 stars.

The Difference One Duke Makes, Elizabeth Essex (February)
After getting ruined by the late Duke of Warwick, Miss Penelope Pease runs into his younger brother, Marcus Beecham, the new Duke. They flirt a bunch and "elope" and bone and marry, in some order.

OH MY GOD THE OVER-RELIANCE ON "PEASE PORRIDGE" IS TERRIBLE: IT IS AN ATROCIOUS NICKNAME AND BY THE END OF THIS THING I WAS READY TO REND MY GARMENTS AND FLING MYSELF INTO THE SUN. I can't even remember the rest because the nickname thing was ridiculous. 1.5 stars, and Essex can thank me for them.

Discovering the Duke, Madeline Martin (March)
Julia Sinclair's husband, William, Duke of Stedton, left her the day after their wedding night claiming some business about "Matilda". She thinks he's cheating on her. When he shows up to a house party they are both invited to, he explains that Matilda is a horse and they proceed to negotiate their marriage or something.

I guess this was refreshing if only because the couple was already married, which was a nice change from the "a figure from my ~past~ has reappeared to engage me in horniness", but it was otherwise meandering and unaffecting. 2 stars.

The Duke and April Flowers, Grace Burrowes (April)
Henning, the Duke of Clonmere, has a family agreement to marry one of hte Earl of Falmouth's daughters. After meeting the 4 of them, he fixes on the eldest—Iris—as the women he's into. He's just got to figure out what to do with the younger three!

This was fun: I liked Iris and Henning and how they fall for one another, and how Henning goes out of his way to secure the happiness of Iris's family because he sees them as his potential family and it's all very cute and fun and sweet. 4 stars.

Love Letters from a Duke, Gina Conkle (May)
The Duke of Richland needs a proper wife but he wants his sexy neighbor, Mrs. Charlotte Chatham.

Did not finish: the overt horniness of this was off-putting, and the writing was a sloppy, overly heightened mess. - stars.

Her Perfect Duke, Ella Quinn (June)
Giles, Duke of Kendal, spots the ever-so-innocent Lady Thalia Trevor at a county fair and decides she is the Woman For Him. Within LITERAL HOURS, they are "in love" and are engaged.

HILARIOUSLY BAD. The writing is just: ridiculous. Puppet-based and awakward. And the instant-love: embarassing. And the over-the-top plotting to escape the evil father: inadverntantly silly. I am consistantly in awe of it—and yet I finished it. 1 star.

How to Ditch a Duke, May McGoldrick (July)
Lady Taylor Fleming has an accidental run-in with the dreamy Franz Aurech, Duke of Bamberg. He's smitten; she's convinced he's only after her for her money so she lends him on a merry chase across Scotland. When her friends trick her into having a direct conversation with the man, she realizes that he's actually just severely horny for her, specifically, so they make it to like third base while stranded on an island. The end.

This was fine but so, so stupid: literally ONE conversation is enough to take these two from absolute strangers to married. And that doesn't really qualify as a romance, to me, because there's no actual development of feelings or emotions or anything. It's just "YOU = HOT; US = MARRY; WE = EVERYTHING BUT BONE", which. Wasn't fulfilling. 2 stars.

To Tempt a Highland Duke, Bronwen Evans (August)
Dougary Firth, Duke of Monreith, has been told by the King that he needs to get married again. So he decides that his widowed "bff" Lady Flora Grafton (who he has loved for...some length of time) is perfect—because she's barren. I think we all know where this is going.

I couldn't keep the timeline in this straight, which led me to be rather concerned about the age gaps and also? I just don't think I bought the second chance romance. But then, I never do, so. 1 star.

Duke in Search of a Duchess, Jennifer Ashley (September)
The Duke of Ashford is informed by his children that he needs some wife; they have also asked the "busy-body" neighbor, Mrs. Helena Courtland, to assist. Which she does, until Ash remembers that he's always liked her the whole time, or something. Also plot moppets.

This was marred by the revelation that all the relationship between Ash and Helena had developed off-page, before the thing even gets going, which makes the reconciliation of their love-feelings like super meh. Also Ash's brittle facade of meticulous appointment-keeping was baller characterization, I guess. 2 stars.

Dear Duke, Anna Harrington (October)
John Daniels, the new Duke of Monmouth, wants to put in a fancy canal, which will close the local grain mill, owned by Cora Bradley's father. She declares war on him. Meanwhile, both John and Cora have secret pen pals that make them feel tinglies in their dinglies.

This was alright! Very much a You've Got Mail homage. The costume bit was odd. The final courting bits were okay. The final denouement was kind of tepid. 2.5 stars.

Must Love Duke, Heather Snow (November)
Lady Emmaline Paulson rescues a dog from the Serpentine that she names 'Duke' (as a funny ha-ha-my-father-is-coercing-me-into-attempting-to-nab-the-new-duke-in-town joke). Maxwell Granville, heir to the Duke of Albemarle, helps with the rescue—and then proceeds to flirt her face off until their real identities are revealed.

I thought this was cute and had good momentum, but it was absolutely knee-capped by the terribly abrupt ending. Like, I get wanting to leave it open ended but YIKES was that rough. With that in mind, I guess...3 stars?

The Mistletoe Duke, Sabrina York (December)
Widowed Jonathan Pembroke, Duke of Devon, is visting his mother over Christmas when he runs into Meg Chalmers, companion and former bff of his late wife. After they both get sicced by all the eligble guests, they end up in love or something. Also plot moppets.

This was...not my bag. Like, Meg is a fine heroine, I GUESS, except that she feels guilt because she's been hot for Jonathan since FOREVER except he chose to marry her "prettier" bff (Tessa) and now Tessa is DEAD, so... Meanwhile, Jonathan views Meg as a sister until he gets an erection that shatters his brainpan into fragments and becomes a territorial manbeast. Like: why. 1 star.

Dueling with the Duke, Eileen Dreyer (January)
Adam Marrick, Duke of Rothray, shows up to visit his cousin's widow, George Grace, to let her know that her daughter has inherited a duchy in Scotland. They fend off kidnappers, angst, and various familial secrets before deciding to give matrimony the old go. Plot moppet.

I could not follow the absolutely BANQUET of goddamned family members in this. There are at least two Jamies (one of which is a child, I think?) and everyone's family is terrible and it all sucks before you die. Also the relationship "building" in this was absolutely comically lacking: there is SO MUCH ELSE packed into this thing (i.e., action / adventure / plotting / secrets / etc.) that the sudden hand-holding-make-an-honest-man-of-me thing really came outta left field AND THIS IS A ROMANCE, SO. 1.5 stars.

This was an engaging read of 4*and 5* stories. I had read books by most of the authors but some were new to me and I will be looking out for their books in the future. There was just one ending I was disappointed in, the author left the reader to make up the ending. I like things finished!
Duke in Winter 4*
This was a light hearted story. I did like the main characters of Bea and Wulf, I liked that Bea was her own woman, in spite of her dissolute brother. Wulf was exactly the right person for Bea, he was strong but accepted Bea for who she was. I would have liked an epilogue, just to round it off.
The Difference One Duke Makes 4*
Two very engaging characters in Marcus Beecham and Penelope Pease. A good amount of detail was written about Beech and Pease Pudding (as the referred to each other ). Beech had been away for 10 years in the Royal Navy but they had known each other since childhood. This story emphasised how differently slight misdemeanours are dealt with depending on gender. Beech was such an honourable man and I liked how their relationship grew into something deeper. I loved the Valentine at the end.
Discovering the Duke 5*
A very enjoyable story that illustrated how a person’s previous experience can affect their outlook and how misunderstandings can easily occur when trust is missing.
The Duke and April Showers 5*
This story involves Henning, Duke of Clonmere who is being persuaded to choose a bride from the Earl’s daughters. Although the earl has four daughters, he is only considering three for the duke. The oldest, Lady Iris, is the daughter that Henning wants. I enjoyed the way he went about getting what he and Lady Iris wanted.
Love Letters from a Duke 5*
Nathan, Duke of Richland has to choose a bride from the guests at his house party. However, none of the younger women appeal to him, but a widow who is older than him does. Mrs. Charlotte Chatham is a neighbour and they have had an attraction to each other for some while. Charlotte is some 9 years older than Nathan and there is another problem that may affect their relationship going further.
Her Perfect duke 5*
I really enjoyed this story of how Thalia’s siblings and Giles’ guardian worked together to thwart Thalia’s overbearing father. The connection between the siblings and how they protected their mother was engaging.
How to Ditch a Duke 5*
Lady Taylor Fleming was treated dreadfully by her father and brother, even though it was her intelligence that enabled them to have money to fritter away. Frank Aurech, Duke of Bamberg was fascinated with Taylor when he first saw her. Although, Taylor was equally attracted to Bamberg, she avoided him, thinking him in need of an heiress. I enjoyed that the Pennington’s were involved in this story and the way they connived to get Taylor to talk to Bamberg. A very engaging story.
To Tempt a Highland Duke 5*
I enjoyed this story of second chance at love. Dougray had loved Flora for a long time but had let her marry someone else for reasons of his own. Flora had loved Him as well but feared that was too late for them, she had her reasons as well. I liked that Flora knew her own mind and wouldn’t let Dougray dictate to her. This was an enjoyable read.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.
I have never enjoyed something as much as I have this book. A great collection of historical romance novellas. I want a duke of my own. Dukes never wanting to marry, dukes hiring people to pretend to be their fiancée and dukes looking for true love.

Please Note - I did not have time to read all the novellas in this collection - so my review is an average rating of the stories I did read.

WOW - this collection is chocked full of novellas from some of the most wonderful HR authors writing today! I sadly did not have time to read all the stories (but I will go back and finish!), but for the money, even if you only get to read a couple - it will be money well spent!

The Difference a Duke Makes by Elizabeth Essex - 4 stars - When Commander Lord Marcus Beecham returns to England after ten years at sea, he never expected to learn that he was now the Duke of Warwick. Marcus is not happy about this turn of events and when his mother presses for him to marry, he escapes to the country. But to make his mother think he is cooperating, he agrees to attend an event at his neighbor. He feels out of place and heads to the library for a reprieve. To his surprise and delight, he is not left alone - Penelope Pease enters - his childhood friend and if the rumors are true, the girl that refused his brother's marriage proposal. Penelope is happy to see "Beech" and proceeds to tell him of her sordid past with his brother - a past that has lead to her complete and utter ruin. Beech feels comfortable for the first time since returning to England, she doesn't try to toady up and is not put off by his missing arm, she just treat him like a man and right then and there, he decides that Penelope is the perfect duchess for him - but can he convince her? Sweet story, warmish love scenes, likeable leads and a HEA - but it did feel a bit rushed.

Discovering the Duke by Madeline Martin - 5 stars - Julia Sinclair, the Duchess of Stedton is on her way to a house party, where she will see her husband again for the first time since their very awkward wedding night a few weeks ago. Julia married William after a whirlwind courtship with the hope of finding happiness and to escape her father's house, but those hopes were shattered when she found a note the morning William rushed away to see his "Maribel" the morning after they wed. She has decided that she cannot live a life as a complacent wife as her mother did and will tell William that she wants to live separate lives. William hated having to rush off the morning after their less than perfect wedding night, he loves Julia, but his father's horse Maribel was ill and she is the last link he has to his family who all perished in a fire. He expects Julia to be upset - but he is absolutely floored to learn she wants to leave him! He tells her who Maribel is and convinces her to give them a chance to get to know each other before any plans for the future are made. This was a well written, fast paced story with two flawed people, steamy love scenes, a lot of emotion and a very sweet HEA.

How to Ditch a Duke by May McGoldrick - 5 stars - Lady Taylor Fleming is a heiress in her own right who has given up hope of ever finding love. When a carriage accident leads to an encounter with Franz Aurech, the Duke of Bamberg, Taylor is stunned to realize that she is attracted to him. When she later learns that he is penniless, on the hunt for a rich wife and that her father offered her up on a silver platter, she bolts. Franz is not broke and he is very interested in the beautiful, bold woman he met on the road - but he can't seem to pin her down! As luck (or fate) would have it, he learns that she is hiding out in the highlands with his good friend Dermot McKendry, he wastes no time running her to ground. Taylor wants no part of a marriage to a groom seeking fortune, she has learned more about Bamberg and has convinced herself that he will take her money and leave her to rot in his castle in Bavaria - no thank you! She avoids him at every turn and escapes to visit her dearest friend Lady Millie - only to learn that he will be arriving shortly. Millie encourages her to talk to him and then conspires with Dermot to trap them alone long enough to talk - but their plan goes awry when Millie goes into labor. This was a fantastic short story with two wonderful leads, some misunderstandings, steamy love scenes, love at first sight and MILLIE & DERMOT!!

Duke in Search of a Duchess by Jennifer Ashley - 5 stars - Augustine Ferrand, the Duke of Ashford likes order, he needs order, it is how he copes. So when his children inform him that he is too rigid and needs a wife, he is stunned. When he learns that the children have asked his widowed neighbor Helena Courtland to help him, stunned takes a backseat to anger and horror. He tells Helena in no uncertain terms that he is not in need of a wife and even if he was, he would never ask for her help. Unfazed by his outburst, Helena proceeds to tell him her plan to find him a wife. She also suggests he take a trip to the country and spend sometime with his children. Later he learns that he is not needed in Parliament and decides that he will go to his country seat - mainly to get away from Helena. Helena learns of the trip and makes plans to visit her friend who lives close by his estate - she is more determined than ever to marry him off! Let the battle of the wills commence! This was a great addition to the collection and I loved it - it is well written, well paced, believable and entertaining, with great characters, warm love scenes and a great HEA.

Dear Duke by Anna Harrington - 4.5 stars - This was a cute adaptation of "You've Got Mail" Cora Bradley is the daughter of a grist mill owner and John Daniels is the new Duke of Monmouth. John wants to build a canal which will ruin the mill, he offers to buy the mill for far more than it is worth, but is turned down flat by the beautiful but annoying Cora. John struggles with his inheritance, he never expected to be a duke and feels like an imposter, building the canal is important to him, it makes him feel useful and needed - but if he can't convince Cora to let go of the mill, the entire project will fail. Cora is returning from the duke's house when she finds an old ring - clearly not a priceless piece, but definitely priceless to the person who lost it - she writes a note and pins it to a tree with the ring - this begins the exchange of notes - John found the note and the ring and replies - they share so much in those notes, everything except their names. When John suggests they meet - she is torn, but goes anyway. He learns who she really is and wonders how they can move forward with the mill problem between them - but help comes from an unexpected source and the reader is treated to a very sweet HEA. This was a cute story, well written and well paced, staying true to the theme, without completely copying it.

This was an all-around well-written and high quality anthology with cute stories and charming characters.

Duke In Winter: This is a quick Robin Hood-esque tale in which our spinster heroine moonlights as a highwayman. Lady Beatrice steals from her brother's debauched and wealthy house guests to support the old and poor in her village. When she inadvertently tries to rob, and subsequently shoots, war hero and former spy Wulfric, the Duke of Highrow, sparks fly in more ways than one.

The Difference One Duke Makes: Commander Marcus Beecham has been summoned home, arriving to find that his tyrannical older brother is dead and he is now the Duke of Warwick. having lost an arm in service to the Royal Navy, he finds he loathes how differently people are treating him. But his childhood friend Penelope Pease doesn't treat him as anything less than normal and though she is ruined, she may be just what he needs. Wishy-washy heroine and sappy repetitive endearments aside, this was fun.

Discovering the Duke: the new Duke and Duchess of Stedton have become estranged after just 2 weeks of marriage. When William leaves to take care of business at his country estate Julia assumes he must have a mistress and determines that even if he's faithful she'll never be able to trust him with her heart. I really liked this one.

The Duke & the April Flowers: To uphold a loose promise made by his late father, Henning, the Duke of Clonmere, is meant to marry one of the Earl of Falmouth's 3 youngest daughters. He makes no promises but agrees to meet them. Only, he's very intrigued by Iris, the eldest daughter and confirmed spinster of the family. Iris is overlooked and treated like a governess by her father. She knows she has no hope of marrying the duke, no matter how much she comes to care for him, but the Duke has other ideas.

Love Letters From a Duke: Nathaniel, the Duke of Richland is meant to find a wife, hopefully from his mother's picks at a house party she is hosting, but his only real interest lies with his mother's widowed, older, and highly inappropriate friend Mrs. Charlotte Chatham. Injured in a terrible carriage accident that killed both his father and his elder brother, Nathan is wracked with guilt and the Richland family is just coming out of a dreadful year of mourning. Although she may be considered inappropriate, Charlotte may be just what Nathan needs.

Her Perfect Duke: When her father betroths her to the Duke of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Lady Thalia Trevor knows she must act quickly if she is to find love like her siblings and avoid her callous father's machinations. Berwick has other ideas as well and arranges for Thalia to meet his protege, Giles, the Duke of Kendal. Giles was hurt by the death of his infant daughter much more so than that of his temperamental wife in what was a marriage arranged by his late father and now he wants to choose a wife for himself, to find love. When Giles & Thalia meet, their love connection is almost instantaneous but keeping her father at bay and executing a successful wedding will be much more difficult. Enjoyable insta-love here.

How to Ditch a Duke: Heiress Lady Taylor Fleming is trying to rid herself of an unwanted suitor. She has her own money and refuses to allow her father to trap the poor duke into marriage with her so she hides out in the Highlands with friends and hopes he will give up. Her plan fails however when the duke winds up at the same Highlands abbey visiting her friend's husband. Franz Aurech, the Duke of Bamberg is in need of funds and Taylor is well aware of the lengths men will go to in order to secure a fortune so she stays away despite the fact that the duke is handsome and well-traveled. She avoids even seeing him, but their mutual friends have other ideas.

To Tempt A Highland Duke: Lady Flora Grafton has always loved Dougray Firth, but he stood by 8 years ago and watched her marry another. Now he's the Duke of Monreith and has proposed to her. She wants to tell him yes but is afraid to risk shattering her heart again and is suspicious of his timing now 3 years into her widowhood. When she finds out why he gave her up all those years ago, it may not be enough to make her risk her heart again.

Duke in Search of a Duchess: The Duke of Ashford has lost himself in rigid routine as a way to cope with his wife's death and be there for his 3 children. But they've had enough of it so the 3 have enlisted the help of their neighbor, the widowed Helena Courtland, to find him a wife. Unwilling Ash finds he cannot stop the force of nature that is Helena and maybe he doesn't want to; maybe he wants her for himself.

Dear Duke: With her father's health failing Cora Bradley is determined to save the grist mill that is his legacy, despite the new Duke of Monmouth who wants to destroy it in order to build his new canal. John Daniels never expected to inherit the title, but he's one for progress and hard work, not idleness, and he'll fight for his new project. The only one who seems to understand is the mystery woman he's been sharing anonymous notes with. They develop a closeness through their notes but when it comes time for identities to be revealed, Cora flees before learning who her correspondent is and when she does learn he's her enemy, it may make her run rather than working out a compromise.

Must Love Duke: Lady Emmaline Paulson is expected to marry a duke but that's not the life she wants. She has her spaniel puppy and that's enough; if she can't marry for love, she'd rather not marry at all. Heir presumptive to the Duke of Albemarle, Maxwell Granville can't stop thinking about the woman he aided in rescuing a drowning pup, he just can't think of how to convince her that she wants him. He doesn't want someone who only wants his title and Emmaline wants love to be the only thing that matters, not status or titles. They're a perfect match if only he can convince her.

The Mistletoe Duke: His mother has decided that it's been too long since his wife's death and Jonathan Pembroke, the Duke of Devon, needs to remarry and hopefully to someone who can help control his twin daughters. She enlists the help of her companion and his childhood friend, Meg Chalmers, in planning a Christmas party to vet potential brides. Unfortunately for her, Meg has always loved Jonathan more than she should but she's rather inappropriate as a potential duchess as she brings nothing to a marriage since her brother's death left her a pauper. But Jonathan is finally starting to think of Meg as a woman and is quickly realizing he can't bear to see her with anyone else.

Dueling With The Duke: When she receives a visit from her late husband's cousin, Adam Marrick, the Duke of Rothway, widowed Georgie Grace is astonished to learn that her daughter has inherited a duchy in Scotland and is now a duchess. Georgie is desperate to keep her daughter safe from her own parents who would take her away. Initially she's hostile and resistant to Adam's announcement and intentions but rapidly has a change of heart and decides she loves him. Not my favorite.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

Amazing!! A wonderful collection of stories by some of the best authors in historical romance and I love them all! What is not to like about a Duke? Plus you get a baker's dozen which makes it even better!! Prepare for adventure, humor, some mystery and suspense and of course heart melting romance that will just make you sigh...

Duke in Winter by Alyssa Alexander
When a Duke is halted to "Stand and Deliver" by a highwayman, he never expected to be shot! Lady Beatrice was shocked she actually hit him! Her aim was usually perfect! Of course it had to be Wulfric, the Duke of Highrow. A fun story of a female highwayman who takes from the rich and gives to those in need!

The Difference One Duke Makes by Elizabeth Essex
Commander Marcus Beecham was about to have his life change drastically. Summoned to return to London and be away from his ship, he was shocked to find out his brother Caius had died and now he was the Duke of Warwick. I felt so sorry for Marcus! He had lost his arm in the war but his mother did not even welcome him back. Just stated he had to marry! Fortunately for him, he ran into his childhood friend, Penelope Pease, at the first event he attended! She had certainly grown up and it just might be she was perfect for him!

Discovering the Duke by Madeline Martin
May I say this stole my heart? Married after a whirlwind courship, Julia had been left by her husband after their wedding night. Where was he and who was "Maribel" he had rushed to see? She attends a house party by her friend in the hopes to get away and see if her husband will attend.
A beautiful story of two people who were meant for each other. They both had their self doubts but it seemed fate would bring them back together! Madeline always writes a story that makes me smile.

The Duke and the April Flowers by Grace Burrowes
The Duke of Clonmere is being persuaded to choose a bride from one of four sisters. Such a delightful story as he maneuvers his way to the one he really wants! Loved both of these characters!

Love Letters from a Duke by Gina Conkle
A Duke who needs to find a wife and hopefully from the house party given by his mother. Of course the younger women just are not appealing and his focus goes to Charlotte, an older widow and friend of his mothers. Both have their recent troubles to deal with but it may just be they are perfect for each other!

Her Perfect Duke by Ella Quinn
A father who bethoths his daughter to a Duke, but she wants to find love. Amazingly she is introduced to Giles, the Duke of Kendal by that same man she is to marry! A wonderful story of love found when least expected!

How to Ditch a Duke by May McGoldrick
A tale of misunderstandings and a merry chase that will eventually lead to love. Lady Taylor, a heiress is determined not to marry a man that only wants her money. When she meets Franz, the Duke of Bramberg, she is very attracted to him. That is until she finds out he is broke and needs a rich wife! She goes on the run to hide in the highlands, but Franz shows up again! Such a wonderful story that takes you on a journey of love and delight!

To Tempt A Highland Duke by Bronwen Evans
A story of lost love that may can now be found. Lady Flora had always loved Dougray but he let her marry another many years ago. Now he has a title of Duke and wants to marry her. But how can she trust him and risk being heartbroken again? Such a hearttfelt story.

Duke in Search of a Duchess by Jennifer Ashley
A widowed Duke who has encased himself in stricture so he can deal with everyday life after the death of his wife. Left with three children who become matchmakers, they ask the widow next door, Helen, help to find him a wife. Thus begins a whirlwind that can only end in an unexpected attraction

Dear Duke by Anna Harrington
Be still my heart. I loved this story! Cora's father owns the grist mill and John, the new Duke of Monmouth wants to build a canal which will ruin the mill. He offers to buy and Cora refuses to sell. When Cora finds an old ring, she writes a note hopefully to find the person who lost it and with the ring pins it to a tree. This begins an exchange of notes between her and John although each do not know it is the other. Such a wonderful story that could only make me smile with delight!

Must Love Duke by Heather Snow
What do you do when you are expected to marry a Duke, but you only want to marry for love? Rescue a puppy from drowing with the aid of Maxwell, the Duke of Albemarle. He can only think of her but how will he convince her to want him too? A delightful story that shows love comes when least expected.

The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York
The machinations of a mother to help her son find a suitable lady to marry, because it has been too long since his wife's death and he needs someone to he get his twin daughters under control! Enlisting the help of her companion, Meg, who is also his childhood friend should aid her in planning a Christmas part to bring in some potential brides. But it may be that the best match may be closer than his mother thinks!

Dueling with the Duke by Eileen Dreyer
An unexpected visit brings an astonishing message that Georgie's daugher has inherited a duchy in Scotland! Adam, the Duke of Rothway is the cousin of her late husband and she fears her parents will try to take her daughter away! The daughter Lilly Charlotte and her dog Murphy bring an added delight to this story of unexpected love coming when least expected!!

Dukes by the Dozen
Duke in Winter - January by Alyssa Alexander
A lady Robin Hood who steals from the rich in her village and gives to the poor - that is Lady Beatrice Falk. In disguise no one in the upper echelons of society knows who the Honorable Highwayman truly is under his masquerade. Until she meets Wulfric Standover, the Duke of Highrow, Bea has endeared herself to the people in her village. But when she shoots the Duke in a robbery gone bad, she has met her match.
“Bea stared down at the duke. She was close enough to discern the lean planes of his cheekbones, the strong jaw. Although she did not need any light to remember he was handsome. Extraordinarily so.”
I really enjoyed this story. It is a fun romp with some hilarious moments.

The Difference One Duke Makes - February by Elizabeth Essex
This is the second book by Essex that I have read and I really enjoyed it. Marcus Beecham has been at sea serving in His Majesty’s navy when he is called home to become the next Duke of Warwick. Suffering a handicap from the war, he is inclined to stay away from people. But when he is invited to a ball he runs into an old childhood friend. Lady Penelope Pease has grown into a ravishing young woman. Beech’s life is turned upside down when he meets Peas in the family library.
“It was heaven - he was heaven, the calm, assured man who looked like a glowing archangel, one of God’s warriors, armored against the sharp weapons of society with his heroism and honesty and dashing courage. Nothing could injure her while she was with him. She was free - to feel the heat of his chest seep through the intervening layers of her clothing until she was as warm as a flower in the sunshine.”
I enjoyed this book. Essex infuses a healthy dose of humor as well as steamy romance into the story.

Discovering the Duke - March - by Madeline Martin
This story was so charming and delightful. Martin is a master storyteller. William Sinclair, the Duke of Stedton has had a lackluster start to his marriage. He is determined to woo his wife Julia properly at a house party. So he begins a set of games to reach his goal of conquering her heart. I enjoyed the heated scenes. “The rough texture of his whiskers rasped against her skin as he arched her head back to kiss down the curve of her throat. His teeth slid down her neck to worry and nip at the hollow at the base of her throat.” Can’t wait to read more by Martin.

The Duke and the April Flowers - April - by Grace Burrowes
This was my first time to read a Grace Burrowes book and I wasn’t disappointed. Henning, Duke of Clonmere must marry and his pick must come from a family of 4 women. But as he gets to know them, only one of them captures his heart. “I have a dream too. I dream of a woman whose trust is precious, a woman of surpassing sense and generosity of spirit, one who has soldiered on without companionship for too long. I dream of that lady entrusting her heart to me. I want-I yearn-for such a lady to take her place at my side, not because I’m a duke, not because I am a competent kisser, not because I can damned waltz by the hour, but because I have earned her tender, lasting regard.”- Duke of Clonmere. This was a lovely romantic story.

Love Letters From A Duke - May - by Gina Conkle
I have to say that this story in this group is a heart pounding, soul-aching read. I thoroughly enjoyed this steamy romp. The Duke of Richland needs a wife but he craves the heart of a widow - Mrs. Chatham. “Their mouths met in a fury of bone-melting, seize-the-moment lust. The first contact obliterated her senses. Singed them down to her toes. She gave him a remember-me-for-the-rest-of-your-life kind of kiss. The duke set out to do the same. His embrace was passionate. Demanding. They could be floating on a wave. Lost. Happy. Together.” heart pounding, page turning read…

How to Ditch A Duke by May Mcgoldrick
This was my first time to read a book by McGoldrick and I was pleasantly surprised. This story has wonderful humor running all through it. There is a sex scene towards the end of the story for those who want to be warned. I loved the Duke of Bamberg but other than a few German words sprinkled here and there, I wondered why McGoldrick chose to not give him an accent. No matter. “The stranger was beautiful, the embodiment of every woman’s dreams. Water glistened on the sharp planes of high cheekbones and a strong jaw. His lips were full and his tanned and weathered skin indicated that he was a man who spent a great deal of time outdoors. His eyes had the grey green hue that the sea took on in a storm. And they were focused on her.” I will definitely be reading more of Ms. McGoldrick’s work.

Duke In Search of a Duchess by Jennifer Ashley
I think this story is one of my very favorite ones in this compilation. I haven’t laughed so hard in quite some time. It has wonderful romance in it as well. It’s basically Hello Dolly set in the Regency era with a few kids thrown in. A real treasure of a story.

Dear Duke by Anna Harrington
I really enjoyed this little story. It is Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail adjusted to the early 1800’s. I loved the steamy scene and thought it was very romantic. I can’t wait to read more from Harrington.

Must Love Duke by Heather Snow
I really enjoyed this book. The hero is swoon worthy. …”he was, quite possibly, the most beautiful man she’d ever seen. Her eyes traveled over his thick, chestnut hair which glinted auburn even in the weak sunlight. It had a natural lift and curl that caressed his face without being the least bit feminine. His lips were full, his jaw was both long and square, his nose sat strong and straight on his face and his deep set, hazel eyes stunned beneath impossibly thick lashes.” I am looking forward to reading the next book by Ms Snow.

The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York
What a delight! York’s romance has some spice and comedy all rolled up. I normally don’t like children in romance stories, but the twin girls in this book are hilarious. Definitely going to read more by York.

Dueling with the Duke by Eileen Dreyer
I liked this book but at times I found the story line a bit confusing. There are a few crucial editing mistakes which were a bit difficult to sort out as well. However, on the whole it is a good sweet story, and I will have to make sure I purchase a few more of Ms. Dreyer’s books.

Duke in Winter - Sweet story about a woman who mimics Robinhood and accidentally shoots her prey, who is childhood crush of hers. Trapped in a snowstorm overnight. ***

The Difference One Duke Makes - Childhood friends reunite unexpectedly after 10 years, in which the hero has been in the Navy and has lost an arm. The heroine, meanwhile, has been "ruined" by the hero's now-deceased brother. They were totally comfortable with each other and thus, no misunderstandings, which I liked. The nicknames were a little annoying, but I liked the romance and resolution. ****

Discovering the Duke - This story was a little more lengthy and in depth than the first 2. A new bride is haunted by the memory of her father screwing around on her mother, literally in front of his wife and daughter, and as such does not trust men. The Duke, meanwhile, is haunted by his own memories, of being unable to save his parents in a fire when he was a child. He has not had love or security since he was 7, and wants more than anything to have a family. Even though this is a short story, it took these two a while to trust and convince each other that love was real. ****

The Duke and the April Flowers - Somewhat of a Cinderella story with 3 younger half sisters who may be shallow, but aren't mean. Their father is determined to ignore Iris, and insists she help marry off one of them to the Duke. Clonmere only has eyes for Iris, but she thinks it is a hopeless case. Some trickery ensues in the end for a beautiful conclusion! Loved it! *****

Love Letters From a Duke - This is a "forbidden love" story, as in the Duke has lost his father and older brother in an accident that left him blinded in one eye and with terrible scarring to his leg. Now that the family is out of mourning, his mother expects him to marry and is providing multiple choices of a bride. The only one he wants is the widow next door, who is a friend of his mother's.
There is palpable sexual tension between them. There is a slight twist in the end! ***

Her Perfect Duke - Thalia's father is greedy for land and has locked her away so that she won't meet anyone. He figures out some land that he wants and attempts to arrange a marriage for her, when she turns 18, to an older man. Some conspiring goes on between that man and Thalia's family, without her father's knowledge. So she meets Kendal, who is a widower. There is instant attraction and love, but a complicated plan is needed to get them married without her father knowing. ***

How to Ditch a Duke - There is a meet cute right at the start of this, after which the Duke of Bamburg goes after Taylor. She, however, has heard rumors that the Duke needs money. Despite being attracted to him, she doesn't want him to marry her for money, then take off on world travels. She totally avoids him, until a situation comes up in which she can't. Very cute story, with secondary characters that are probably in a prior book. ****

January – Duke in Winter by Alyssa Alexander — When the Honourable Highwayman demanded that Wulf the Duke of Highrow stand and deliver, he didn’t know it was a woman nor that she would shoot him, then tend to his wound & steal his heart. A lovely short story, fast paced sizzling & I read in a sitting

February – The Difference One Duke Makes by Elizabeth Essex — former naval commander Marcus Beecham is summoned home to unexpected news, swamped by debutantes & matchmaking mamas he seeks solitude in the library where he meets his old friend Penelope Pease. I love encounters in a library. A charming story of two injured, imperfect people finding love.

March – Discovering the Duke by Madeline Martin — Reunited at a house party after a lacklustre start to their marriage, William the Duke of Stedton attempts to win Julia his Duchess’ heart. Misunderstandings & family history all conspire to thwart William's attempts but then a sizzling wager made at a house party could be enough to melt the frost between them. A page turning novella with great characters & an enthralling story.

April – The Duke and the April Flowers by Grace Burrowes — Henning, the Duke of Clonmere must marry one of the Earl of Falmouth’s three giggling younger daughters, but Lady Iris Falmouth’s oldest, who is not at all inclined to giggling catches Clonmere’s eye, and his heart! Instant attraction before knowing who they were, helping hands all made for a captivating read

May – Love Letters from a Duke by Gina Conkle — Nathaniel the Duke of Richland never expected to become a duke he was the architect second son until a horrific carriage accident killed his father, elder brother & injured him. He needs a proper duchess, but he wants his thoroughly fun, entirely inappropriate neighbour, Mrs. Charlotte Chatham. She’s widowed, older, and if the whispers prove true barren. I didn’t think hot water & a butter churn could be so hot! A lovely story of an older lady & younger man finding love.

June – Her Perfect Duke by Ella Quinn — Giles, Duke of Kendal sees Lady Thalia Trevor at a market and is instantly smitten. There is only one problem. She is already betrothed to another man who just happens to be his mentor & father figure. A lovely story of instant love both Giles & Thalia fall hard for each other. I love the stories about the Duke of Somerset’s children & especially how they all band together to thwart him

July – How to Ditch a Duke by May McGoldrick — Lady Taylor Fleming is an heiress with a suitor on her tail. Her plan to ditch him is simple, escape to the Highlands. But there is nothing simple about the Duke of Bamberg. I loved Taylor from the start when she wasn’t afraid to get her hands etc dirty. Bamberg also isn't all he seems another wonderful read from a must read author of mine. An added bonus was that the Penningtons made appearances & I was thrilled for Millie.

August – To Tempt A Highland Duke by Bronwen Evans — Widowed Lady Flora Grafton must be dreaming. Dougray Firth, Duke of Monreith, who once pledged her his heart but then allowed her to marry another, has just proposed. As with all the author’s books I'm drawn in from the first page, a lovely read of second chances.

September – Duke in Search of a Duchess by Jennifer Ashley — The meticulous Duke of Ashford is dismayed when his children ask Helena Courtland, the gossipy, busybody young widow next door, to find Ash a new wife.

January – Duelling with the Duke by Eileen Dreyer — When Adam Marrick, Duke of Rothray, shows up on Georgie Grace’s doorstep, she thinks it is to become acquainted with his cousin James’s widow and daughter. Instead he brings news that will completely upend their lives and put them all in danger.
A baker’s dozen of short stories, including quite a few stories by my must read authors & a couple of authors new to me. Of course I loved some more than others but all are very well written, there were some that I wished were longer & I was left wanting more. Some of the novellas had links to other books by the author. I loved that I could read one before sleep & knew I wouldn't be awake all night reading! Thank you ladies for giving me nearly a fortnight of nightly bedtime reading.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

3.5 stars.

My peronal favourites in this collection of super short stories were the ones by Alyssa Alexander, Madeline Martin and Jennifer Ashley. If you like reading several short HRs featuring Dukes, you'll enjoy this.

I personally found that the length of the stories didn't allow for building of characters and plot lines, and made many of the stories feel rushed. That is to be expected with a dozen novellas to be squeezed into a single book, but as far as anthologies go, my favourite is Duke I'd Like to F... which features a collection of fewer, but better fleshed out stories.

DUKES BY THE DOZEN is a collection of high quality novellas which makes for some fabulous reading. Each story can be read in roughly an hour or so, and is perfect for when you don’t have the time to sit down for several hours of reading. The heat level varied, though most stories were warm, and some were kisses only. I definitely recommend this diverse collection of ducal tales, and am sharing my thoughts on those which were my favorites.

DUKE IN SEARCH OF A DUCHESS by Jennifer Ashley – Widowed Duke of Ashford (Ash) has organized his life around schedules and timetables ever since his wife died six years ago. His three children feel that they’re just an item to be checked off his daily to-do list, as he spends a brief amount of time with them before their bedtime. His son, Lewis, along with his two sisters, has decided that it’s time for him to remarry, and they know just the person to help him find a bride. Helena Courtland, the widow next door, loves the duke’s children dearly, and is more than willing to help them find a wife for Ash. Unfortunately, Ash has no desire for a wife, or to spend any time with Helena, whose vivaciousness and cheery personality is the polar opposite of his own structured life. Helena is determined, however, and despite Ash’s refusals, she keeps appearing in his home and bringing up names of suitable candidates for his duchess. Ash finally comes to realize that he desires his lovely neighbor, and that, perhaps, marrying again won’t be so bad. Helena is a strong woman, and her bubbly personality is just what is needed to bring Ash out of his self imposed scheduling nightmare of a life. The schedules were his defense mechanism for giving him some semblance of control over his life, but he comes to find that a little chaos is just what he needed.

THE DUKE AND THE APRIL FLOWERS by Grace Burrowes – Henning Whitcomb, the Duke of Clonmere, has been approached by the Earl of Falmouth, with a letter from Henning’s late father, indicating that his son would marry one of the earl’s daughters. While the letter is not legally binding, Henning is willing to meet the young ladies, and see if there is any possibility of a successful match. The earl’s three youngest daughters are advised of the situation and instructed to enchant the duke, while their older sister, Iris, is not part of the “competition.” At twenty-six, Iris is considered to be on the shelf, and her duty is to rave about her sisters to Henning, leaving him to have a favorable impression and willing to choose one to marry. As fate would have it, Henning and Iris almost immediately find that they want each other, and have to find a way to make their dream of a future together come true. I love this couple and their interactions with each other. This warm and delightful story flows beautifully along as a magical happy ever after seems to be in the cards for all four sisters.

HOW TO DITCH A DUKE by May McGoldrick – Lady Taylor Fleming is the daughter of an earl, but she’s unlike a typical delicate female, as she is tall, strong, and buxom. Her two failed seasons have made her an object of ridicule to her awful father and brother, who mock her unmarried status. Taylor is determined not to be taken in by a fortune hunter, who pursues her only because she is an heiress. When Taylor hears gossip that a Bavarian duke, Franz Aurech, has come searching for a suitable wife, she avoids meeting him at every opportunity, because it seems that he, also, needs to marry for wealth. Little does Taylor know that she has already met Franz before, without knowing his identity. She also doesn’t realize that Franz was immediately taken with her, and that the rumors of his needing to marry an heiress are false. The chase finally ends with two truly magnificent people finding genuine love and the promise of a full and adventurous life together.

THE MISTLETOE DUKE by Sabrina York – Life hasn’t been kind to Meg Chalmers. The man she desired, a childhood companion, ended up marrying her best friend. Upon her father’s death, she was displaced from her home, and is now companion to the mother of the man she loved, Jonathan Pembroke, the Duke of Devon. Jonathan is now widowed, and his mother is urging him to remarry to provide a mother for his young daughters, and to, hopefully, produce an heir. She plans a house party, where she invites several eligible young ladies, one of whom may catch Jonathan’s eye. Meg is also in attendance, assisting the dowager duchess with the party, and still feeling a pang when she sees Jonathan. It seems that his mother has another plot in mind, one that would pair Jonathan with her beloved companion. Jonathan is delighted to spend time with Meg, someone he’s always loved like a sister, or, so he tells himself. As the party goes on, he sees how little he has in common with the other young ladies in attendance, and how much he comes to see Meg as a desirable woman in her own right. This is a lovely story with good flow, and some amusing moments. I loved seeing the blinders come off of Jonathan’s eyes, and the well deserving Meg achieving her heart’s desire.

Alyssa Alexander's Duke In Winter is a lovely Hallmarkesque story of a Lady Robin Hood. Lady Beatrice is a twenty seven year old spinster that masquerades as the Honest Highwayman . After a late night of debauchery she seems to meet her match in Wulf, the Duke of Highrow. This passion filled (without the graphics) story will keep you turning the page, and rooting for the two to fall in love at very least. It does not disappoint.

The Difference One Duke Makes
Elizabeth Essex
Two people of the peerage in positions that they never wanted or thought that they would be in. A friendship of youth rekindled and more. Both think that they are persona non grata, damaged goods as it were, and decide to give their peers something to think about. The new Duke of Warwick, (Beech) and Pease Porridge(Penelope), the daughter of Sir Harold Pease, throw convention to the wind and flee into the night.
This book makes the reader root for the characters, and to right the wrongs. It's a beautiful feel good story, with unexpected twists and turns that you dont see coming.
I can't wait to read more like it.

Discovering The Duke
Madeline Martin

A very awkward wedding night, a house party with her missing Duke, and a huge misunderstanding. This book is a fun filled comedy of errors, with the all the scandalous behavior of Regency England Peerage.
Julia wanted to marry William the Duke of Stedton since first seeing him at a soiree, she wanted to escape her parents home and their loveless marriage. William also noticed her that first event as well. He too was running from a horrid past. These two wanted each other but because of their pasts, didnt know how to trust each other. As with house parties, games are being played, private, personal games with each other as well. The prizes may just lead to love and their happy ever after.
As with all of Ms Martin's books, this book has engaging characters, twists and turns and side characters that lead to the next novels. A really good read.

The Duke and The April Flowers
Grace Burrowes

This is a lovely story of the Duke of Clonmere being forced to take his Ducal duties seriously after being away for awhile. One of those duties is finding a Duchess. Unfortunately for him he is being pushed into honoring a letter from his father to an older kind of despicable Earl. To his fortune this Earl has four , not three daughters to choose from. Fortune seems to smile upon him when he is able to steer the courting possibilities to his and the ladies in question favor. For his possible bouquet of Iris, Lily, Holly and Hyacinth , he may just find his favorite flower and they their perfect match.

Love Letters from a Duke
Gina Conkle

Another Duke, another house party, another trio of virginal girls to be marketed to him like horseflesh. Always the proper gentleman, the Duke of Richland knows what he must do, but is not wanting what is on review for him. Still recovering from an injury that affects his hip and leg, he has been put into the hands of his mothers friend, the widow,Mrs Charlotte Chatham. Just as she knows what to do to help him is unconventional , he knows that his want for her is just as unconventional. This story is a very entertaining look at their dance around each other, knowing that they make a great match, but one that society would probably frown upon. Charlotte and Nathan correspond their feelings back and forth between letters, each a little more revealing than the last. Eventually with knowledge of the Dowager's approval, one final letter will be written with Hope's of winning Charlotte's hand. I love that this book shows the non conventional side of things that I am certain happened in this era, but that you just dont read too much about. I look forward to reading more from Ms Conkle.

Her Perfect Duke
Ella Quinn

This wonderful story deals with the dynamics of a large Ducal family, run by an over controlling, over bearing Duke of Somerset. There are twelve children and I love that some of the males in the family are named after their place in line, beginning with Quortus and ending with Decimus, and the daughters are named after Zeus' , Three Graces. Ever the schemer, the Somerset makes plans to pawn his daughter Thalia off to the Duke of Berwick-upon-Tweed, in exchange for a much wanted parcel of land. Berwick who was much in love with his late wife has other plans. Plans that include a young Duke of Kendal that he is fond of , and Lady Thalia, who he discovers needs saving from her brute of a father. So many brothers, sisters, and relatives involved in this comedic yet serious under taking. There are house parties, travels en mass, and a delightful castle with plenty of tunnels to explore and use to escape when needs be. These two young lovers discover quickly their fondness for each other, and delight in perhaps being able to legally marry while Thalia is still under age. The plans are brilliant and the writing is too. I plan on visiting more of this series to see how the other brothers and sisters fared in their own courtships. A most enjoyable read.

How to Ditch A Duke
May McGoldrich

I have loved all of the stories in this book so far, and this one is no exception. Lady Taylor Flemming is an almost on the shelf independently wealthy, woman that is all of a sudden thrown into the marriage mart again when the lot of financially poor peerage discover that she has money. Franz Aurech, Duke of Bamberg meets Lady Taylor purely by accident and is smitten and intrigued by her strength and her demeanor. He sets out to learn more about her and feels that she is the one for him, his future Duchess. She to the contrary has heard that he is a cash poor Duke looking to fill his coffers with dowry money, and is literally running for everything that she is worth. This delightful tale follows her as she makes her way around the English countryside finally to the Scottish Border. Her best friend, is married to his best friend, little does she know that fate is about to intervene. The comedic and seriousness of this novel are a perfect foil to each other. I will definitely be reading more of this brilliant writing team's works.

To Tempt a Highland Duke
Bronwyn Evan's

Flora has been in love with the Duke of Monrieth forever. And he with her. But due to his ignorance , Dougrey never acted on it, and allowed Flora to wed off as a proper match for property. Now years later she has been widowed for three years and Dougrey, still unwed, faces a royal decree to be engaged by two days time, when the King will be in town for a visit. Being around each other brings old feelings to the present. Flora is at a point in her life where a discreet tryst or affair is not looked down on as long as it is not flaunted. She is willing to take on Dougrey until he announces his engagement, knowing that as she is barren, she could never marry him. Dougrey doesnt want more children, his fear of dying in childbearing is too great, he just wants Flora. If she will agree, all else matters not, and the royal decree will be fulfilled. Sometimes fate intervenes, and fears have to be faced in order to get your happy ever after.

Dukes by the Dozen is a great collection and a must to read if you love historical romance set in the Regency era!
This is a multi-author set which I give it 4.5 stars overall rating, but to be fair I felt each story needed to be reviewed individually so the difference in the stories are noted as to my opinion.

How To Ditch A Duke by May McGoldrick (July)
5 Stars
I LOVED this story! Great plot and beautifully written storyline that contains all the right amount of emotion, adventure, humor, witt, and great characters! This story has an extra special bonus because it ties in with the book “Dearest Millie”! It’s a story I recommend to everyone who enjoys great reads that make you smile and sigh at the end!

Duke in Winter by Alyssa Alexander (January)
5 Stars
This author is new to me. I enjoyed this fun and wonderfully written story with it’s confident and witty highwayman heroine and the handsome Duke she knows and decides to rob. The story is fast paced, exciting, and adventurous, with a hot and steamy romance to warm up a cold night!
I recommend this 4 flame story to everyone who wants a fun and good historical romance read!

The Difference One Duke Makes By Elizabeth Essex’s (February) 5 Stars
Ms. Essex is a new author to me and I’m a fan! This is a stirring story of two damaged souls who reconnect after many years at a time neither dreamed they would be happy again. A commander who lost his arm in battle is called home to find out his brother has died in scandal and he is now the new Duke. Herself hiding from men who seeks her company because of her ruined reputation, runs into her long lost friend who is the new Duke now and the brother of the previous Duke who ruined her. This beautiful love story has great characters, with emotional, witty, and touching dialogue that bares the deep angst and the love they share to become whole as one.

Discovering The Duke by Madeline Martin (March) 5 Stars
This heartfelt story tells the tale of a newly married couple, who really didn’t know one another and therefore, signs of mistrust began to put strain on the marriage before it had a chance to strengthen and grow.
If you are looking for a heartfelt love story with the building of trust and into a hot steamy 3-4 flame romance, then you won’t want to miss this short story.

The Duke and the April Flowers by Grace Burrows (April) 4 Stars
This was a fun read about a manipulative Earl who planned to marry one of his three younger daughters to the Duke. But, the oldest daughter who’s job it was to recommend her younger sisters to the Duke was the one who caught the Dukes eye. This story is fast paced with lovable characters and creative and witty dialogue. Mild romance.

Love Letters From A Duke by Gina Conkle (May)
4 Stars
This was another fun well written read about the handsome eye-patched Duke and all the lovely young debutants vying to become his future Duchess. But, theres also the mutual attraction between the Duke and his slightly older widowed neighbor, stirring up the long felt attraction that shouldn’t be. I enjoyed this story and it’s witty characters and dialogue!

To Temp A Highland Duke by Bronwen Evans (August) 5 Stars
I LOVED this story!
This is a beautifully written historical romance with compelling characters and a moving storyline that kept me engaged until the last page. Highly recommended.

The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York

I’ve had a crazy busy first third of the year, so while I would have jumped at the opportunity to ‘early read’ all of these stories, I only had time to fit in one of the twelve novellas in this “duke for every month” anthology. I read The Mistletoe Duke from Sabrina York and forgotten just how I missed her storytelling and characters!

Meg was left penniless and homeless when put out of her family estate after her brother’s death. Fortunately, she’d always been friendly with Jonathan, Duke of Devon, since he was in short pants, a friend of her brother she was a tomboy and constantly trying to “keep up” with them. Her memory is that they never shunned her, or Jonathan never did, and that spurred her first crush all those years ago. Now at not quite twenty-four, she is companion to Jonathan’s mother, the Dowager Duchess and believes herself firmly on the shelf.

Jonathan did marry, once. To Meg’s best friend Tessa -now gone, leaving behind twin five year old daughers who run through their governesses like water. In fact, when leaving London for their country seat, the girls set their last governess’ shoe on fire with a ‘little coal’ from the brazier in the carriage…. She ‘smelled funny’ was the only reason for losing yet another caretaker in the short distance from London to Devon. The girls want Meg, and Meg sees so much of her friend in them, amused by their antics and their imaginations, she loves them as much as one could. But Jonathan’s mother Anne has other plans for both her son and Meg.

Hosting a country house party in the middle of the London Season, for Christmas, isn’t the ‘done’ thing – but Anne is tired of her son’s parade of nights in gambling dens, less than “upstanding’ friends and a lack of mother for her granddaughters. To that end, she is making it impossible for Jonathan to ‘not’ find a new woman, it’s only until things are well under-way that we see her choice is the only one possible: a friend from childhood that deserves a chance, and is destined for far more than a lady’s companion for the remainder of her years. And, the girls adore – not frighten her, and they’ve already lost more than their tender years should warrant.

Unexpected friends to lovers in that “who couldn’t see this match” coming BUT them sort of way, the heart, heat and characters mix together well with York’s sense of fun. Love should be fun, and people should laugh – to be alone or unhappy is a state that isn’t perfect for anyone’s psyche – and you can be certain that this story is a fun and entertaining way to lift your spirits and introduce you to new friends.

I received an eArc of the title from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions ae my own responsibility.

Love Letters From a Duke – Gina Conkle - We all know that letter writing has pretty much become obsolete so reading this adorable story and the letters written between Nathaniel and Charlotte takes me to a world full of wonderful feelings in writing. These two characters are compassionate, caring, loyal and loving. A fantastic story that frankly I wished would not end.

To Tempt a Highland Duke – Bronwen Evans – Devastation leads to fear of giving yourself to the person you love. Dougray and Flora’s journey took a left turn into nowhere land for many years and seeing them learn to trust and not let fear ruin their chance at happiness is a beautiful story. A wonderful story with a great epilogue.

Dear Duke – Anna Harrington – Another letter writing story that really warms the heart. John and Cora are so adorable as enemies who are also secret pen pals. Anna, I loved the masquerade name of Lord Panther!!! I do not know if it was a nod to a previous book but I thought so and it made this story so special for me. Another one I could have kept reading.

The Mistletoe Duke – Sabrina York – I love Ms. York’s writing. It is so full of emotion and wonderful moments. Jonathan and Meg’s story was so sweet and I liked how even though Jonathan was married before, he did love his first wife. So many stories these days make the first wife such a b*tch. Not this one, she was revered. That made the relationship between Jonathan and Meg so lovely. Loved Jonathan!

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

First off, I have to say for us fans of historical romance in general and/or any of these authors in particular, this is a must buy. Even at the $4.99 list price, this line up of authors had me pre-ordering as soon as I was able to. Now that I have had a taste, I can't wait to read the other stories in the collection.

I have had the pleasure to do an early read of Sabrina York's The Mistletoe Duke. Ms York's stories never disappoint me. This one touched on one of my favorite tropes - the Cinderella story. The poor impoverished companion finding her . . . Well okay, he's only a Duke instead of a prince. But you get the idea. He is handsome and debonair, if a bit clueless. Thank goodness for well meaning family and friends to guide him. Overall, a lovely bedtime story.

Leaves me with great expectations for the rest of the collection. Will update as I read.

This was a great collection of well-written novellas. Thirteen stories, each featuring a duke! What could be better? Each of these 13 novellas was entertaining and filled with humor and romance. Must Love Duke by Heather Snow - Lady Emmaline Paulson rescues a pup from the Serpentine with the help of Maxwell Granville, heir to a dukedom. Neither of them knows who the other is, and they are able to get to know each other without knowing each one's status in society. Funny, sweet and romantic - very enjoyable! The Mistletoe Duke by Sabrina York - this was such a fun story. The Duchess of Devon enlists her widowed son and her companion to help her throw a Christmas Ball. With this combination, you never know what might happen! I definitely recommend this anthology to others.

This is a very entertaining and enjoyable collection of historical novellas. These fun stories offer up blends of drama, humor, excitement, charm, mystery, danger and of course, romance. My favorites of the bunch were: Dueling with the Duke by Eileen Dreyer: Which I thought was quite suspenseful and dramatic, Dear Duke by Anna Harrington: Which was funny, sweet and filled with charm and The Duke and the April Flowers by Grace Burrowes: This was a completely swoon worthy romance that was filled with sweetness, humor and heart melting romance. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

What's better than one duke? Thirteen of them! I love anthologies. Not only do you get to read favorite authors, but also to discover new ones. This anthology has a duke for every month plus a share. All of the stories are entertaining and easy reading. In my opinion the best tale is May McGoldrick`s "How to Ditch a Duke." It was not only very enjoyable to read, but also allowed a delightful visit with one of my very favorite characters, Millie. I also found a new to me author in Eileen Dreyer. I loved her offering, the last in the book, but not the least for sure. It made me want to read more from her. This is a wonderful collection of great minireads, not one is a "turkey." I received this e-book from one of the authors for an honest review.
