Foundation for Agility isn’t about the obstacles; it’s about what happens between the obstacles. Barb believes that the best way to develop handling skills is “on the flat”—away from the equipment—and incorporates ideas from the horse world about training dogs on the flat. Flatwork teaches you how to handle and make all your body language clear, consistent, coherent, and timely while also teaching your dog how to take direction and stay with you on course.
This book provides a good basis for flatwork and explains why flatwork is so important. While there are some really useful exercises outlined in the book, I do wish the author would have included more, and maybe even provided some that would be useful as the dog owner moves up the levels with their agility dog. Still, overall a useful training tool
This is a nice, if basic, introduction to flatwork. Coming from a competition obedience/rally background and having been training in agility for several months, this didn’t add anything new to my knowledge. I was hoping for more advanced flatwork that would help increase clarity in my handling and enable more distance work but this book emphasizes working the dog close in heel position
