Baby loves the five senses! Accurate enough for experts, yet simple enough for baby, this clever board book explores the science of vision, light, and color. Beautiful, visually stimulating illustrations complement age-appropriate language to encourage baby's sense of wonder. Parents and caregivers may learn a thing or two as well.
Ruth Spiro is the author of the Baby Loves Science series, published by Charlesbridge. These adorably illustrated board books contain expert-reviewed science, yet are simple enough for the very youngest readers. Another new picture book series, Made by Maxine, will be published by Dial in October, 2018.
Ruth is a frequent speaker at schools and conferences, and recent presentations include the Early Childhood STEM Conference at CalTech and the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
Yasss! It's never too early to talk about science with kids. This book has some good, BIG vocabulary words like SPECTRUM, ELECTRICAL, and RETINA which aren't used in everyday conversation. It was very colorful and I LOVED the diverse cast of characters, and the fact that the book discusses that there are people who need glasses to see better and that there are people who can't see at all. Excellent board book!
This is a great book for beginner readers to learn where light comes from. It talks about how the sun makes most of the light we see. The book even talks about how light creates energy and how we need energy for many things in life. People see with their eyes from the light reflecting off of the object letting us see the colors. This book is amazing for children to understand how they see.
Ages 3 and up. This series explains how the five senses work to toddlers, and the Sight and Hearing books also explain disabilities in terms of using glasses, hearing aids, or being blind or deaf. An important introduction to the diversity of human bodies.
For those looking to explain to young children the concepts of light, color, and vision, this board book does a nice job of explaining those concepts. The illustrations show baby waking up, playing in a sandbox, and enjoying a rainbow. Mixed in with the illustrations of baby are diagrams showing the basic concepts of light, how the eyes work, and color and rainbows. I haven't used the book with actual children so I don't know how easily these rather abstract concepts will be for them to understand, but the book does provide a nice introduction for those who want to start their children's education at a young age.

This series is truly wonderful. It presents as a toddler type book (mine was a board book), but it quite educational - even I learned something new about the senses. Highly recommend for learning about the senses!
Love this simple easy to understand explanation of sight for toddlers. This is a super fun series for parents who want to read something that will evoke discussion.
I love how scientific it got without being too overwhelming, and I appreciate that it added in a spread for acknowledging those who are blind and use Braille to read.
This is the fifth and final book I've read in The Five Senses series, and it receives top marks! The stor opens and closes with relatable real-life baby / toddler experiences, and in the middle, it explains the science of sight in terms easy enough for kids to understand and clear enough to educate or remind adults how the senses work, too. The book also addresses sight differences. A+!
