This is a sweet and pleasant story of getting a second chance at love. Lee is the new manager of a state park and lives near Grangeton, New Hampshire. Her friend invites her to a book club at the second hand bookstore in Grangeton which is run by Jannika. Lee knew a Jannika when she was a counsellor at Girl Scout camp 18-years-previously. Jannika runs a surprisingly successful second hand book store because her ability to find the right book for the right person is more of a passion than a job.

There is a lot of merit to this novel which seems to be Webber’s debut (she has had a short story in an anthology by Sandy Lowe). The characters have good chemistry and there are mentions of their history but no extended flashbacks. For the most part their backstories were nicely integrated into the story but there were times when I felt that Jannika’s esteem issues would have been more believable if based in her previous relationship rather than her childhood. There wasn’t quite enough expression of what her childhood was like to consolidate the present day effects.

The secondary characters are not as well-formed as I’d like and there were a few times that they were just left hanging. Perhaps there should have been fewer secondary characters with more attention paid to them. What this book definitely has in its favour is that the sex scenes are steamy and well-written.

The writing is solid, it’s a good romance and I would read more by this author. There wasn’t quite enough difference here to give it an edge though.

Book received from Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.

I received an ARC of « A Chapter On Love » by Laney Webber from BSB (Thank you !!!) in exchange of an honest review.
So, here it is !!

This contemporary romance, is the author’s debut novel. It’s a pretty good and cute one but some parts are a little boring. Seriously, it had the potential to be really good, but it just didn’t ignited in me as many sparks as I hoped.

My rating : 3⭐️

The story focuses on Jannika (Nick) Petterson, who arrived in Grangeton, New Hampshire a year and a half ago with a broken heart due to a cheating ex …(but also low self-esteem, and other baggage aplenty) to manages a used book store… and Leslie (Lee) Thompson who tragically lost her wife a few years back and recently moved to the area to become one of the local parks manager (luckily for everyone, including us, readers, she seems to have very little baggage). Both of them first met 18 years ago at Girl Scout camp, in Maine where Jannika was a 17 year old young counselor-in-training and Lee a 24 year old summer camp counselor. Jannika had a major crush on Leslie but nothing happened between them back then. Now they meet again thanks to one of Lee’s friend who is a member of Nick’s book club and they are thrilled to see the attraction & connection still exist and … are even stronger …

What I liked a lot or even loved :
° the cover without any character on it … I like the simplicity of it (that’s just a shame it’s written « florist and gift shop » on the banner of the shop instead of « book shop »..)
° the originality of the name « Jannika » (even if I’m not fan of the nickname « Nick »)
° the second chance in love offered to the MCs
° the pretty good wording (but see my remark below about some lil things)
° the nice descriptions of a couple places (mainly outside) which give me the desire to visit New England someday (FYI it wasn’t included in my list of places to visit in the US until now)

What bothered me in this book. :

° The « move too fast » side of the relationship between Jannika and Lee and the useless & quite boring drama provoked by this.

° The Thanksgiving episode & Jannika’s low self-esteem and the rest of her baggage … That really got on my nerves … OK, her « broken » childhood wasn’t conventional seen from a certain POV and she had a bad break-up but, hey, who didn’t ?? => Luckily for everyone it seems she hasn’t been bullyied and she worked on some issues with professionals through the years ‘cause, otherwise, I think it would have been impossible for me to read the novel. (it already took me longer than usual … and I’m saddedned about that)

° Lee’s excessive reaction when Jannika left her house in a hurry after the apple picking => OK, I understand why Lee is upset & deeply hurt because of the way her wife died but comparing the way a guy who fooled around deliberatly (costing her wife’s life in the process) and the way Jannika put her car quite « dynamically » in drive because of a family emergency or when she’s upset (so from time to time) and being totally pissed off by this and puting the 2 facts at the same level, seriously, that’s not rational (nor believable) at all from my POV. If she had really worked hard on her issues since several years, this one should be gone by now.

° The characters’s names are too many times reminded in the dialogues. It’s annoying because I think I’m smart enough to follow a dialogue without being reminded who talk to whom … + because, it breaks the rhythm mainly in the middle of the love scenes …

° The non hygienic side of the love scenes. (but don’t get me wrong, other than that they are well written and very sensual… 😉 )

° The lack of really well-developed secondary characters … don’t get me wrong, there are some SC, even plenty of them but none of them has a real « screen time » and it’s a shame. I think that having more background on all the most important SC (Marcy and Amy, Sarah, Edgard and Hannah … at least) would have brought a deepness to the story.

° A mistake in the presentation I’ve noticed several times : « enter » pressed right in the middle of a sentence (which doesn’t make any sense and should have been noticed by the betas or, at worst, during the edition process)

° The little redundancies about several subjects, descriptions, feelings, etc … found all the novel long.

° The fact that the small town used book store seems to have an unbelievable amount of customers. That’s very surprising (from my POV) at the online shopping and ebooks era. (but this being said, since I’m personally a fan of paperbacks and other printed books, you bet I’d visit such shops if we had some over here)

° the absence of an epilogue.

All this said …. If I had to make a very short and quite different version of my review it’d be something like this :
° Did I enjoy this book? => Yes … and no.
° Is this book now included in my « must be re-read »-list? => Nope (unless the author releases a new (and completed) version of it someday)
° Will I purchase the paperback? => Nope (unless the author releases a new (and completed) version of it someday)
° Would I read another book by this author? => Yes, I want to give her another try …
° Would I recommend this book => Yes, cause it’s still good to discover some new authors and I bet some people will love it.

Guys and gals, since you shouldn’t decide to read a book only based on the others’s reviews, now it’s your turn => Grab your own copy and make your own opinion …

Enjoy (or not) your reading …

ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I think this is Webber’s debut novel, and while there is some potential here, this was pretty ordinary. I had to make myself finish it.

Jannika and Lee meet again after 18 years and are instantly attracted to each other. Lee is a park manager who lost her wife a few years back (but luckily has very little baggage), while Jannika manages a used book store (that honestly seemed to have an unbelievable amount of customers) and has a cheating ex, low self-esteem, and baggage aplenty.

Much is made of the fact that they knew each other before, but given that their past amounts to little more than a one-sided, unrequited crush, it’s not that interesting. Unfortunately, neither is Jannika. She’s pretty boring, and more than a little ‘woe is me’. There’s a lot of back and forth and running away on her behalf (don’t even get me started on the Thanksgiving fiasco). Lee deserved better.

Neither character really appealed though, and the setting and secondary characters did little to elevate the book. The only interest I had was in Marcy and Amy, I’d much rather have been reading their story.

The writing is also a little stilted and there’s too much awkward dialogue and description about minutia that doesn’t matter. Like the author’s overuse of character names, especially within dialogue scenes.

I’m giving this 2.5 stars and rounding up to 3 only because it’s a debut and I’d feel bad giving it 2 stars.

A Chapter on Love by Laney Webber is a lovely contemporary romance that was fun to read. It is what I like to call a feel-good romance, you know, the kind that makes you smile as you read. Both main characters met about eighteen years before the story begins when both were at summer camp. Jannika (Nick) Peterson was a young counselor-in-training and Leslie (Lee) Thompson was a summer camp counselor. Jannika had a major crush on Leslie, but the circumstances and age difference between the two meant nothing could happen then. Eighteen years, a lot of maturing, and a good deal of heartache later, they meet again and find the connection still exists and is even stronger. Now both have to find out if their bond is strong enough to overcome past heartaches and grow into love.

I really enjoyed this book. It is well-written, the pace of the story is good and the main characters are well developed. I felt the connection from the moment they met again. The story caught my interest and kept me reading all the way until the end. I really only have one criticism with the story. I wish I could have read a little more about Jannika’s early life. It seemed to have a big impact on her actions in the present, but we really only get glimpses of her childhood. Knowing more about what she went through in her early years might have made me understand a bit more about her actions in the book’s present. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

A Chapter on Love is a strong debut novel that I can easily recommend. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Webber in the future.

In A Chapter on Love, the two main characters first meet as camp counselor and camper then again 17 years later. Both Lee, a park ranger (a favorite trope of mine) and Nik, a bookseller, fatefully end up in each other’s path as adults and sparks reignite.

I really liked Lee and felt that hers was the more well rounded character. Nik was okay but there were aspects of her that either spoke of her flightiness or deeper issues. Hate ex’s in stories and kept thinking that Nik’s behavior hinted that she still was stuck on the old gf. Part of me did not want Lee and Nik together, especially after Nik’s shenanigans at the end. Maybe I just wanted more Lee in the narrative since she was my favorite. But there were also parts that were very good, interactions between the two that did make you believe they were falling in love.

Overall, a good book and I would be curious about the author’s next one to see what she does. I read this book courtesy of Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jannika is picking up the pieces of her life after a breakup. She has her dream job managing a bookstore, she's got a book group, she's trying to date again. Then, one day her teenage crush and camp counselor Lee Thompson shows up in her shop and her carefully pasted together life is thrown off course in the best possible way. They have a chance at love that they didn't have when they were younger. They might not be ready for love but love might be ready for them.

I liked this book, but it didn't quite get to loving this book. It was hard to pinpoint a specific reason to be honest. I think sometimes it felt like the scenes were a little unbelievable - describing something in more detail than someone from that POV might actually be able to know. It meant I felt a little far away form the story and the characters and I didn't quite connect fully. Jannika and Lee as well, I felt like the characters were just missing that little oomph to give them great depth so that I can connect to them as individuals and to their relationship. They were really interesting characters though, they had pretty good backstory and different careers.

I loved the descriptions of books, they were like their own character themselves. The chemistry was steamy and really well done. The story idea and the connection between Lee and Jannika so many years later was super sweet. I loved it.

I enjoyed this for sure. A good debut novel. I will definitely be reading future books by this author.

I slogged my way through this book. You know what's great in novels? Conflict. And there isn't a darn bit of interesting conflict to be had anywhere in this story. Jannika moved to a different state after her girlfriend cheated on her. She manages a bookstore. She reconnects with Lee, who was a Girl Scout camp counselor she had a crush on back in the day. Lee has a thing about speeding because her wife died in a car accident. She's a park ranger. They go on a few dates. Jannika has a mini-freak out after she meets Lee's family because Jannika has baggage over a Daddy she never knew and her mother (neither of whom are on page ever) - never mind she has a doting aunt and a circle of friends. Throw in some small town atmosphere and basically that's the book. Watching paint dry would have been more riveting.

Jannika Peterson and Lee Thompson met years ago when Lee was Jennika's camp counselor. At the time each of them was somewhat taken with the other but seeing as Lee was a little older and in a position of authority nothing ever transpired between the two. Years later when Jannika found out her long term lover was having an affair she moves to New Hampshire where she found her dream job, working as a manager of a used book store. Lee works as a park ranger and has just moved to the area for a new position as park manager at Watt’s Lake State Park. Lee is still grieving for her wife who died in a traffic accident. Both have their own baggage but neither can deny the attraction that’s still between them. This is a good story that I found was a little too slow paced and I found a lot of the story was repetitive. Not a bad read but could have been a bit better.I have a feeling that Ms Webbers next book will be better so I look forward to reading and following her work. All in all a pretty good read.

This romance focuses on Jannika and Lee, who first met as a 17 year old camper and a 24 year old counselor at Girl Scout camp. They meet again 18 years later when Lee moves to the area where Jannika is managing a successful used bookstore and sparks ignite.

The best thing going for this novel is the chemistry between the two main characters. I also liked the supporting characters, but they weren't really fleshed out well. I wanted to know more about Jannika's friends from the bookstore, especially her best friend Marcy and girlfriend Amy, and her employee, Sarah.

It seemed as if arbitrary obstacles in the form of Jannika's issues were constantly being tossed into the story. The storyline with Jannika's cheating ex did not seem to have much of a point, other than to create another roadblock. The issue with Jannika's speeding while driving was a bit absurd, as well.

I don't think this novel stands out from the pack in any way, but it was a relatively benign romance read. Rounding up my 2.5 rating to a 3 based on the bookstore setting, honestly.

3 stars. This book was about Jannika Peterson, a manager at a local bookstore in New Hampshire, who has a way of being able to pair people up with the perfect books. When Lee Thompson walks into one of her book clubs, she can't believe her luck. Jannika and Lee went to camp together 18 years ago, where Jannika or Nick trailed Lee around all summer and confessed her love to her. Lee is now damaged, her wife had died and she had transferred from Maine to New Hampshire so she can take a Park ranger job that isn't as active. They both cannot deny their attraction and start to spend time together.

The characters in this book moved awfully fast and I did not really like it. There was a lot of good moments in this book, but it was not all good. The drama near the end seemed a little forced and I feel like it was there just to add something extra to the book. I know these characters both knew each other a long time ago, but they both just accepted the relationship and went fast into it once they got to know each other. It was not surprising, but I like a little more tension. I would probably recommend this.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

I enjoyed this book from the beginning. It was a nice light read. I believe that this is the authors debut novel and I think she has done well.

Jannika (I love this name) is a manager of a second hand book store and has the ability to find the correct book for the right person. Lee (Leslie) is a manager of the state park and used to be a camp counsellor many years ago when she first met Jannika.

The pair meet up again when Lee’s friend Hannah invites her to a book club meeting which is located in the bookstore. They are both surprised at seeing the other after all these years. I enjoyed the storyline, I thought the pace was just about right, it is a slow burn romance which I like and the bedroom scenes were good. It would have been nice to read more about Marcy & Amy but for a debut novel it was great read.

I look forward to reading more from this author in the near future.

Given the blurb, I was hoping the camp counselor was 18, maybe 19 at most. However, we learn that she'd become a camp counselor right out of college, so 20 at best. I kept reading because I wanted to now the age gap. Then we're told she'd been a counselor for 4 years prior to meeting the 17yo camper, so 24 at best. This is definitely creepy when paired with the repeated mentions of the counselor having thought about the 17yo a lot during the 18-year gap before they meet again, including remembering staring at the 17yo's chest and when the 17yo slid her hand up the inside of the counselor's thigh to flirt. Add that we are never told the counselor's age, while it is repeatedly pointed out that the 17yo was 17, and that the now 35yo is nervous and crushing hard again, while the 40-something (again, note that the age of the younger one is mentioned multiple times, while the older one is never defined more precisely than "in her forties" and only once so far) is cool and confident, and I could not bring myself to keep reading.

Jannika and Leslie met 18 years ago at a summer camp. Leslie was a camp counselor and Jannika was a 17 yo with a crush. 18 years later Jannika meets Lee during a book club meeting at the bookstore that Jannika manages. Lee realizes that it's the same Jannika from so many years ago and Janniker realizes that Leslie is standing in front of her but she knows goes by Lee. Of course sparks fly but both parties has some issues they need to deal with in order to be together.

This is a cute love story and the flow is good, but there was only one major problem for me. It was boring. It took me twice as long to get through this one. This had the potential to be really good, but it just lacked spark. Even with the characters being attracted to one another, there just wasn't something that moved it to the exciting category.

I rate this one 2.75.

This was a pretty good debut novel.
Lots of angst, memories and troubled-childhood past trauma. There's plenty of dreams and hopes and promise to keep one reading. It was easy to see the characters surroundings, the author is quite good at setting the scene.
My only issue, and I hate to say this in response to a debut, is that the book is well populated with romance genre tropes. It would be great if the author can find a way to use less of those in her next book, which I look forward to reading. The cover was eye-catching for me. Ms. Webber certainly knows how to write the charm and interconnectedness of small towns. This book has a lot of strengths going for it.

Would that we all get a second chance at our first crush after we’ve had the chance to mature enough to appreciate the rarity of that opportunity. A steamy romance with complex characters who face complicated issues in their own ways. Also appreciate the treatment of the cultural uniqueness of the Swedes who settled in Aroostook County, Maine.

I loved the characters of this book, but Jannika had issues that drove me crazy. The end needed a lot more, because there was a lot more to bring up. The book made a big deal about saying hello and goodbye to the bookstore. Should there be some sort of consequences if it wasn't said?

Previously reviewed on The Good, The Bad, and The Unread:

While I’m a fan of romances with at least one older protagonist, I’m always a little wary of those in which the feelings, if not the relationship, started when the younger protagonist was both a young adult and in a subordinate position to the older one. On the other hand, I love bookstore romances and so was prepared to conquer my worries over the origins of our heroines’ involvement in order to read about their own love of books and the physical places where books are sold.

Eighteen years ago, seventeen-year-old Jannika Peterson was in training to be a camp counsellor for the Girl Scouts of America when she met experienced counsellor Lee Thompson and developed a massive crush on the older (though not that long out of higher education) woman. Although Lee was aware of Jannika’s feelings, and liked the young woman a lot, she never gave any sign that she reciprocated them. At the end of the summer, the pair went their separate ways – after Jannika had sent an embarrassing love letter – and their paths never crossed again. Now Jannika is managing a bookstore in the small town where her aunt lives, and Lee is about to start a new job as a manager at the local State Park.

The two women have had their fair share of heartbreak over the years: Jannika’s last long-term relationship ended when she caught her girlfriend cheating on her, and Lee’s wife died in a car accident under circumstances Lee believes to be her fault. When their paths cross, the two are nonetheless keen to renew their friendship, and both discover the attraction that was there all those years earlier has matured into something that could go a lot deeper. Of course there are obstacles in the way: Jannika worries the bookstore might get sold from under her, and also feels as if she needs to get closure from her ex before she can try trusting Lee, while Lee worries that Jannika’s impulsive tendencies might lead to her running risks and breaking Lee’s heart all over again.

At times I got a little frustrated with all the wariness going on, possibly compounded by the contrasting secondary romance in which Jannika’s closeted best friend is finally trying to be more open about herself to her parents and neighbours. The background characters were mostly delightful – I particularly loved the book group organisers and the various customers Jannika manages to match up with their perfect next book – while Jannika’s ex was believably unlikeable. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the author’s next book.

This was a pleasantly read.

Jannika runs a second hand book store because her ability to find the right book for the right person. Lee is the new manager of a state park .

Jannika and Lee meet up again when Lee friend Hannah invite her to a book club meeting. They both are surprise to see each other again since last time they saw each other was at camp when they were younger Lee was a counselor and Jannika was in training to become one.

As they get to know each other again they realize this could be their second chance at love. We met secondary characters like Jannika bestfriend Marcie who struggled to come out to her parents and she did find love with Amy I wish we got to read more of them.

This was a good written story I look forward to reading from this author again.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. It’s an endearing story which i personally felt was quite slow, especially in the first half. I like the cover and felt it was written well but it lacked a spark and greater interest for me.
The second half of the book was better and kept my attention more than the first.
I feel the story lacked some depth and was superficial in places and that Nick and Lee’s relationship appeared rushed.
This was an ok read for me.

I enjoyed this debut novel from Laney Webber about Jannika and Lee who meet many years later at a book club meeting in the bookstore that Jannika runs. Jannika and Lee (Leslie) attended the same summer camp where Lee was a camp counselor and Jannika was a summer camp attendee. The story is generally good, but does get slow and angst ridden in a few places. The use of two names for Lee is also a little irritating at times. However, the writing is solid, the character development is good, and I would read future publications from this author.

3.5 stars This book was hard for me to review. On one hand, it has a great writing style with vivid and realistic descriptions of small town life and the natural environs. On the other side, it was a bit dull for me. I know it's not a thriller killer book and that's fine. I like a good romance. And this is a good romance. I was just hoping for a little more.

This is an interesting story about a young girl managing a used bookstore which is unlike any used bookstore or new bookstore that I've ever come across in my life. What I liked about it is the bookstore served a needed function in the community. Jannika is the woman who runs the bookstore, she had a very difficult life growing up and was made to feel that she was never good enough in her mother's eyes . She worked hard working to put herself through community college to get her degree. The only family member Jannika was ever close to is her aunt who continues to play a big part in her life.
One night at the bookstore while the women were entering for the book club meeting, in walks a new member by the name of Lee. When she walked in the store she and Jannika made eye contact and nodded to one another in recognition. Jannika and Lee knew each other from camp when Jannika was 17 and 18-year-old. Both women developed a deep and strong attachment when they were at camp, but that was 18 years ago. Can these two women reconnect now or is there just too much that's different between them to make a smooth sailing reconnection?

This is a well written book that kept me interested in the story from the first page to the last, I highly recommend this book.

"Lee had replayed the sequence of events more times in the past eighteen years than she would ever admit to anyone."

This romance novel unravels beautifully. Lee and Jannika met years ago at a summer camp. They never dated but there was a strong attraction. They went their separate ways and years later they stumbled upon each other and the flames instantly reignited. Is the illusion greater than the desire to be with the actual person or can they be more than just a fantasy/fling?

"It has been one thing to dream about meeting Leslie again, another to be with her."

I enjoyed the way the author told the story of each character's life. The vulnerabilities and hesitancy to get into a relationship are quite relatable. In addition, there's the family dynamic, career demands, past relationship trauma threatening any possibility of dating, and building sexual chemistry. The family support was nice to read, especially how fearful it is for some people to open up to their families in regards to their sexual orientation for fear of not being accepted. This book was a light easy read. There was nothing I didn't enjoy about the book. I was happy and finished it in about 3 days. I recommend this book.

The attraction was instant between both Jannika and Lee, but I felt there was something missing, the story was a little bit limp.

Wasn't a page turner for me.
