Into the Deep: An Exploration of Our Oceans

Rate this book
Immerse yourself in a strange and beautiful world as you journey from the beach to the depths of the ocean floor.

Beneath the surface of the ocean lies a mysterious and astounding world that few people ever get to see. This book merges breathtaking art with the latest scientific research to take readers on a fantastic voyage on the submarine Marine Snow, where they meet blue whales, vampire squid, viper fish, and a giant sea spider. They'll learn about bioluminescence, Radiolaria, and coral reefs, discovering incredible facts about the marine world. Annika Siems's illustrations vibrate with color and detail, even as they convey the mystery of a place with scant natural light. From the smallest plankton magnified by thousands, to the most enormous whale, captured on a single page, the sea's denizens are recreated with spectacular precision and artistry. Marine biologist Wolfgang Dreyer's text brings the ocean to life--whether he's describing a transparent jellyfish or the way colors disappear from view as you descend to the ocean floor. A feast for the eye and the mind, this stunning book helps us comprehend a massive, mostly unfamiliar part of our world--one that flourishes with life and beauty.

I want to start off by saying this book was glorious. It focused on a region of the ocean that usually doesn't get much recognition, the twilight region, the deepest part of the ocean. It is an area that is dark and mysterious and hides monsters, and curious creatures. I will say one thing though, the title is, in my view, is a little misleading. The words "the deep" have been, and are, used frequently as a substitute for the ocean in general. All it's parts, from the Arctic ocean, to the Caribbean, to the Pacific and Atlantic. That is what I thought this book was, something that covered all of those areas. I was a little disappointed at it's narrow, somewhat repetitive focus, but I learned a lot.

The book tended to deep dive into subjects, to the point of taking up six or more pages about them. It could have been a little broader in scope, in my humble view. I was very interested though in the variety of creatures covered, and what I learned. For example, the webbing of a vampire squid is green. Also, scientists have viewed a live giant squid, in the wild. Also, many of the creatures were shown, and described, from an external, and internal view. Really explaining their biology.

The illustrations were glorious. Hand drawn, with a stunning almost water color effect that really made them seem like the water was moving. Brilliantly done, and so colorful.

A fantastic read, if you are interested in little known parts of the ocean.

A wonderful peek into the sea.

This book doesn't meet the expectations of most kid's books about the ocean with their bright and colorful pictures depicting the beautiful dolphins and sea turtles of the world. No, this tells a different story of the sea, one much darker and deeper and more fascinating. It gives us a look into the deeper waters that we don't think much about, the part of the ocean that only rare light reaches, some of it coming from the animals themselves.
The images match the subject matter, having a darker and more dangerous feel to them. It evokes a bit of adrenaline as you flip through the pages, learning about these waters.
The educational value of this book can't be underplayed, but it will also entrance the reader, pulling them into a story with fantastic imagery.

Final Verdict: A must have for every book shelf owned by anyone remotely interested in what sits beyond the sparkling beaches we all know.

What a wonderful book!

I'm so glad I spotted this at my local bookstore. I wasn't planning on buying it but I love documentaries on the ocean and when I opened it... Wow. The illustrations are just breathtaking. It was an instant buy for me. The colors, the movements, the creatures, the lights. The work behind the drawings is just astonishing.

And I learned a LOT! (What more do you want?). Sometimes I felt like the science stuff was a bit too much, like too specific and I'm not smart like that, but I really appreciated learning about all the living creatures into the deep sea. It really inspired me and I'm planning to use all this!

Highly recommend this! It's a piece of art and a piece of knowledge!

A visually stunning book filled with scientifically accurate illustrations of ocean species large and microscopic. The reader is taken on a journey to the bottom of the ocean in a metaphorical submersible that culminates in a look at the most poisonous (but still ecologically necessary) part of this complex ecosystem. This book is good for browsing at a surface level, but there is a lot of detailed science to dig into. It's explained thoroughly but appropriately for children, and it's one of my favorite books that I've read so far this year.

Have you ever wondered what the oceans hold? Have you ever been curious about their mysteries?
"Into the deep" is an amazing book, an exploration of the oceans, with stunning illustrations and descriptive text, presenting the bottom of the sea, and the creatures living there.
It is an oversized book, which makes it perfect to observe every detail of the illustrations.
I absolutely love it and it is the kind of book that captives ones attention.

I read this with my five year old daughter and we both really appreciated how beautiful and interesting it was. It was a little dry for a young child but I really enjoyed it. We read a little more young child appropriate one at the same time covering sea creatures and she preferred this.

Library trip nerding out during Moby Dick month. Anyone who enjoyed Pagoo can appreciate the oil paintings (photographed to become the illustrations) paired with a marine biologist writer’s master thesis (translated from German, printed in Slovenia). The latest deep sea research as of 2019 as a pic study & living book? Amén Amén.
