A story arc so powerful that it was the beginning of another great character

I got this TPB just for the reason to get the storyline of Spear of Destiny where the character of The Magdalena made her debut, however the entire trade paperback is truly great, with awesome art and crafty stories.

To do a brief introduction of the two main characters, in case you hadn't heard about them before...

The Darkness is the mafia hitman, Jackie Estacado, who when he was 21 years old, he knew about his legacy of becoming the bearer of "The Darkness", a powerful force which gives him the capability to access paranormal dimensions and control demons from there.

The Magdalena is the chosen champion of the Catholic Church to battle against any enemy of it. When a Magdalena falls in the field of duty, a new one will rise. Each of them armed with the Spear of Destiny and the power to "see" the sins on each person.

First, Spear of Destiny is my kind of battle stories, not like the typical, two heroes fight each other, they realize that they are wrong and they go after some villain, NOT HERE, each of both characters, The Darkness and The Magdalena are doing their best to defeat the other, until the very and bloody last consequences.

You learn a lot about The Magdalena legacy and the final scene is totally shocking, very brave to chose it.

Too bad that they later publish the one shot of The Magdalena/Angelus that diminishes in some way this brutal ending, one of the best.

Later, the other storylines, totally centered on The Darkness, are really good too...

December 21st is very awesome, you learn something else about the Darkness' past along with good character development.

Wyrmwood is not bad, entertained but it could be better.

Finally Sins of the Past starts in great way, excellent use of the sexy character of Dr. Kim Yu Fang, it's a shame that later they get her out of the story. I would like to have her along until the ending. Due that when she left, the art is not so good in some pages and the story got too rushy, but still good.

The darkling entourage is priceless along the whole book, their comments and what they do, are of the best of the whole book.

Highly recommended.

The best part of this graphic novel is the inclusion of Catholic ideas and imagery that didn't focus solely on the scandals and problems within the Catholic church. Don't get me wrong; it doesn't paint Catholicism in a completely perfect light, but at least it gives the religion some positive notes. Also, the character of the Magdalena might be the sexiest comic book character I've ever seen.

Made up of shorter arcs, this collection remains one of my favorites. Readers are introduced to a host of recurring characters here, including the Magdalena and Jackie’s sister Capris. We also see the return of the Angelus, Wenders, Sonatine, and Jenny. A more human, regretful side of Jackie is slowly beginning to emerge, made evident by the reappearance of Jenny in his life.

What makes these stories interesting, to me anyway, is that the stories that make Jackie who he is today are slowly being told. We see more of his past being revealed, particularly through the Cristo/Nicoletta story and the final 3-issue arc. We get to meet some of the people whose life he’s ruined, particularly Dr. Kim Fang, who still bears the emotional scars of her encounter with Jackie. Though The Darkness isn’t known for it’s depth, I would’ve liked to have seen a little more of Kim and Jackie’s resolution, instead of her being so quickly shoved aside after she’s done her medical duty.

I’d also really like to see Cristo and Nicoletta in future issues. Cristo, in particular, seems like a character worthy of a one-shot or mini-series, much the same as Butcher Joyce eventually got.

As for the art….Joe Benitez is probably my favorite artist ever to work on the series, and it was wonderful to revisit his work. Lansang is still hit and miss for me. I’ve always loved the alternate coloring on the Darkness armor that pops up a few times in this collection, where it is black and gold instead of green. It is more ominous and more related to the concept of darkness itself. I wish it had been more prevalent.

Sadly the things pick up only after Lobdell takes the helm. Coney's stories seem only to gather and gather momentum and when the time of the orgasm come, it is only a puff. But after Lobdell.... funny gritty stuff.
