Two people, bound by a powerful curse.
When Sophie Turner finally returns home to the sleepy tourist town of Copper Falls, she imagines the kind of life she’d always dreamed of: calm, quiet, and peaceful. After years of having her steps haunted by a powerful and devious stalker, she is now living on land settled by her ancestors. She can feel the magic in her blood responding, and she feels like she finally has the chance to build a life.

Until he comes along.

All of her dreams of peace and calm come tumbling down the second Calder Turcotte enters Sophie’s life. The danger he brings threatens everything she’s worked for, everything she’s tried to build for herself. He gives Sophie an ultimatum: break the curse her ancestor set on his family, or lose the very land that’s allowing her to heal. And as much as she despises him, as much as she fears him, she’s equally drawn to his icy gaze, his strength. Helping him is the right thing to do.

She never would have guessed how much she’d end up losing to save him.

I have read a lot of reviews for this book and the majority are 5 stars so don't let my 3 star rating put you off!
I didn't really connect with the story or characters enough to rate it more. I have read more books by this author which I loved and really got into, sadly for me it didn't happen with this one. I do not plan on continuing this series.
I hope that if you choose to read this book that you enjoy it as much as the people who rated it 5 did :)

Bland as an oatmeal, and that's insulting to oatmeal, which I quite like.
There's this woman who lives in her ancestral cottage and which she's about to lose due to some unpaid loan or thingy. The soon to be owner is her high school ex, a man cursed, who makes her a deal, she will lift the curse on him that HER ancestor put on HIS ancestor and he will give her cottage back. Yawn.
This was an audiobook, so I've no idea how to write those names and zero interest in finding out, so everyone will be her or him.
The woman is doing all sorts of research, while dealing with a weirdass stalker who doesn't seem at all threatening, kind of a milksop actually, while the not so ex anymore works on cars and turns into a bear. Blah.
World building isn't nothing to speak of, just that there are shifters, good witchy people, who will lose their powers if they do bad and bad witchy people who will lose their souls anyway, so they feel free to do all sorts of bad things. How incredibly unoriginal.
All other side characters are like cardboard cutouts, with as much spirit to them. Main characters aren't anything to cheer over either.
I really liked how whatsherface loses her powers after doing the deed with the ex-not-anymore. Behold, everyone! Don't ever do it with the descendant of your ancestor's enemy, it will end badly. Go join a convent instead.
Overall, bleh.

I absolutely loved this book! Colleen Vanderlinden did an amazing job creating the beginning of Sophie and Calder’s journey together.

I adored Sophie. She was sweet, caring, independent, and strong, but she had a gentle vulnerability about her that I loved. It made her real. And Calder…oh Calder. Now that’s one sexy beast. It was nice to see him soften and open up to Sophie despite trying to keep distance between them knowing what he had to do. But they were fated, and it was useless to fight it.

The side characters were a hoot, so there was plenty of easy humor between them. The glimpses into the past with Sophie’s ancestor, Migisi, and Calder ancestor, Luc, were also nice touches. I’m curious to see if more will be revealed in the next book that I can’t wait to get started on. You should totes read this if you haven’t!

Hmmm, while the idea behind this story was interesting, I found the pace a bit too slow for my liking , but more important, there is something about the main characters that just did not resonate with me (but I did like the twins very much). This is clearly the case of "me, not you" . I'll give the next book a go and will see what happens.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series. This is my first step into Colleen Vanderlinden's writing and I'm looking forward to continuing into the next story. I found it an easy read and loved the main protagonists Sophie and Calder.

First off, just let me say that I'm a great fan of this author. Having read all of the books on the Hidden series, and loving each and every one of them. I was greatly sadden when the final book was done. When she made the announcement of another series she was working on, I'd practically drooled with anticipation. Now it's here and it was absolutely fabulous.

Colleen has the ability to be an imaginative storyteller. She will take you in a journey mostly easily and making you want more. Her characters are brought to real life. I love the worlds that she can devise, and make them believable.

The pace of the story is steady and flowed smoothly. I loved how easily she made the past and present coexist within the story. This author has the ability to capture your senses and fine tune them with her words, making you believe that you are right there in the story with the characters and feeling what they feel.

The main and secondary characters played their parts very well. I found myself rooting for the main characters: Sophie and Calder. I loved the fact that whatever happened in the past between them, still remained steady and true. Though, at times I wanted to knock some sense into them to stop fighting their fate/destiny. Choices will be made that will sadden you, but knowing this is only the first book in the series...there is hope that everything will end on a happy note.

A curse was placed on Calder's lineage and continues. Sophie's ancestors placed the curse. Now both are trying to undo the curse, but there is a player that has been there before the beginning of the curse. Decisions and choices will be made that will sadden you, but there is hope that there is a light at the end of this story for the main characters...

This story has lots of romance, intrigue and suspense....I hope we don't have to wait too long for the second book in this series...My nails will not hold up, and I have limited supply of straws to chew on...

I definitely will recommend this book to all readers that enjoy stories regarding: curses, witches, shapeshifters, and other worldly supernatural beings.

Happy Reading and enjoy....Praise to Colleen for another smashing story....I loved this story...

This is the first book I've read by this author but it wont be my last!! I loved this and am impatiently awaiting book 2.

Right from the start I was pulled into the story. The plot was fast paced and intriguing and the mystery surrounding the curse was fascinating. I loved finding out about it along with the characters. It was interesting seeing how the curse came about when Sophies' family are all good witches!!

The characters were all well written and developed and I loved each one. Sophie was a strong capable character with a plucky spirit. She has been through a lot and is trying to figure out why her magic isn't as strong as it used to. Though now that she is back at her home town and living on her ancestors land, she starts to see a change in herself.

Then we have Calder. His family are shifters and have been plagued by a curse for centuries and Calder has finally found out which witch put it on them. He didn't realise that he knew the witches family and that the ancestor is now living across the street from him. His childhood sweetheart is the only one able to help find the cure so he must do anything he can to get Sophie to help.

The curse plays an important part of the book and I found it fascinating. We are taken from the 21st century and transported back to when the curse first happened through flashbacks. It was intriguing to see how and why it happened and by who and the saddening impact it has on the descendants.

Anyway, in all this was a truly impressive book. I listened to this in a day because I couldn't put it down! It is a richly detailed and magical read and one I cant recommend enough. Its a tale of lost love, of heartbreak, of courage and sacrifice and one that will stay with you. With it's twists and turns and it's engaging characters, this is a must read! I can not wait for book 2!!

The narrator Julia Knippen was fantastic. She portrayed both MCs perfectly and brought across their heartache and grief. She really invested her all into the characters and it shows! I will definitely check out more narrated by her.

*I received a copy of this for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

Where to begin? Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Two old but long lost friends. A 150 year old curse. This book killed me, in a good way. I loved the mystery surrounding the curse and Sophie's so good and light and willing to help. I like how Vanderlinden jumps between the past and present to unfold the story of the curse. Then the dread sets in that this could be bad....very, very bad. I won't give away any spoilers but I'm glad the book wraps up with so many unanswered questions but at the same time finished. The desperation of Sophie's and Calder 's love is so palpable. On a personal note Sophie feels irritation towards those she loves and witch or not, we all have those feelings. Sophie is woman enough to apologize for her behavior when most of us would not. That is how good she is until...We don't know what's in store for Sophie and Calder, but I hope the next book comes out soon! I can't wait.

I hate writing reviews on books because everyone has different opinions. With that being said, take the time to read this author. I started with the Hidden series and loved every second of every book (even when I hated what was happening I was completely hooked). I have a feeling the Copper Falls series will be the same way. I finished this book in one day (it would've been in one sitting but the kids insisted on having food in their stomachs and it's easier to ignore them when their stomachs aren't growling. lol) The female leads are strong, capable, loving women who don't need a man until they find the one their souls can't live without. Even then it isn't sappy bullshit, they are still independent and strong-willed. Do yourself a favor and read this book and the Hidden series.

Amazing, just amazing. As a huge fan of the Hidden series I worried that lightening couldn't strike twice, boy was I wrong. I just love Shadow Witch Rising. This was a page turner, I found myself staying up way too late as I was transported to the picturesque Copper Falls, Michigan. I enjoyed the action, the very unexpected twist (that I will not reveal!), but mostly the characters. I think that Ms. Vanderlinden's foray into paranormal romance is a huge success and I can hardly wait for the next installment in this series.

This is a fantastic new series from Colleen that has all the usual characters from her other books: action, supernaturals, romance, and page-turning suspense! It's different from her Lost Girl series in that this is more of a PR than UF read, so don't go into this expecting to see Molly 2.0. This centers around a Lightwitch named Sophie and a curse that brings an old flame back into her life with big problems. It's a solid first in the series and I'm excited for the next one to come out!

This is the first book in a new series by Colleen Vanderlinden. It has a different feel from her Hidden series, which I am in love with. This book had me hooked from page one. Witches, shifters, curses, & romance. It has it all. I absolutely loved it as much, maybe even more than the Hidden series. Colleen has done it again! And I can't wait to see what happens next in Copper Falls.

Shadow Witch Rising is a story about Sophie Turner who comes back home to Copper Falls after leaving as a teenager. She really comes home; the land welcomes her. She reconnects with her teen love interest Calder Turcotte, but he is not as she remembered. The chemistry is still there, but there is something else below the surface.

I wanted to give this book a higher rating, I really did, but it was just OK. I’m not sure what the other reviewers saw that I didn’t, but there was definitely something big missing for me. That said, romance readers will probably like this book and give it a higher rating.

I liked the concept of a lightwitch who healed and imbued magic into the things she made. What didn’t work for me was that the story left more questions unanswered than it answered. I was constantly asking “why?” and “what happened?” in frustration. Why did the darkness rise in Migisi? What happened with the curse? Why did they die on the same day? What was the connection between the darkness in Migisi and the new darkness rising? Why does being near a certain person make things wrong? Why did the magic suddenly disappear with no warning? And then the ending. Ugh. It really is a cliffhanger. Something huge happens and then the book ends. Just like that. Even with its flaws, the characters are reasonably well developed. It’s the story itself that just doesn’t make sense. I will not be reading follow on books in the series.

A pak tomu nasadila korunu jinou scénou.
Jistým způsobem jsem od knihy dostala vše, co jsem čekala. Ale kvůli některým rozhodnutím charakterů jsem z ní strašlivě zklamaná.

I didn't really like any of the characters, so I'm surprised I made it through the whole thing.
The main plot seems to be Obsessive Magical True Love. He's abusive, but it's totes ok because he's "cursed". She turns to the dark side, but that's ok because she has a Good Reason for her lust for power. The secondary characters are solidly "Go get that hotty gurrrrrl" right up until someone evidently told the author that the relationship was abusive, and a so one of the characters gets a sudden urge to reverse position and lecture about abusive relationships.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I think the concept of this was cool but the pace was so slow and the hero so flat and 2 dimensional that I just could not get into it. I gave up at about 84% and skimmed the rest. I really liked her strike force series but the pace killed it for me on this one.

I downloaded Shadow Witch Rising as a free book from Amazon. I have a great appreciation for novels by this author, and Shadow Witch Rising did not disappoint. A strong, competent female protagonist easily matched the blackmailing male character. A unique story line, with an intriguing ending. Nice job.

As a huge fan already of Colleen Vanderlinden's Hidden series I was both excited and curious to see what her new series brings, especially as it is more of a paranormal fantasy than the urban fantasy that her other series is. As an author however she has never failed to disappoint me! This story features Sophie, a light witch, who is extremely human and very relatable. Her life is both very ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. She has moved 'home' to the land owned by her ancestors and appears extremely happy with her life, good friends around her and a growing business which is going well. She and her friends have the best book club going, the funniest version I have ever read of for sure! There were many laugh out loud moments.

But folks this is a Colleen Vanderlinden book and no matter the subject matter she rips out your heart and makes you want to weep, cuss, love passionately, lose it all, feel hope and at the same time feel like the world is ending. However never fear because Sophie is made of stronger stuff than I and there are more books coming our way. I feel the journey is going to be a rough one ahead, and I have no idea where she will go after the dramatic turn in Sophie's life, but I for sure will definitely be there.

As usual with Colleen's work the characters practically walk off the page, they are truly alive, making us believe in both them and the world surrounding them. Heartfelt and deeply emotional, this book will get to you. Go follow Sophie's journey as she discover's her ancestry, learns about the light and the dark of being a witch and the world in which she lives, full of shifter friends and small town life. You will not be disappointed. Another truly outstanding book from the extremely talented Colleen Vanderlinden.

I have not yet read Colleen Vanderlinden's Lost Girl series, because my budget forces me to buy one book at a time, but I have heard Lost Girl is a great urban fantasy, and Vanderlinden is a talented writer. When I learned that Vanderlinden had a new series starting in February, I was thrilled! I could buy Shadow Witch Rising and read one of her books immediately. Then I learned that Shadow Witch is paranormal romance...not a problem! I love PNR almost as much as I love urban fantasy. I started stalk...err, following Colleen on Facebook, and her fans seemed to suggest that Colleen's characters often face trials and tribulations. Of course, the story would be pretty boring if it went "Woman moves back to home town. Woman bumps into teenage crush. Woman is still in love with the very attractive man. Hot guy still loves woman. They walk into the sunset." The story is much more interesting if the girl is a Lightwitch pursued by an evil Shadow warlock and the boy needs help reversing a horrible curse. I rejoice that there is no evil (pet peeve) love triangle, but true love's path is very thorny, toothy, and dark for the intrepid heroes. The dialogue is great, the world building excellent, and I care about these characters, especially Merlin, the infamous goat. Bad things do happen, and bad things will continue to happen, but I intend to stick with Sophie and Calder to the, hopefully, wonderful end. I highly recommend Shadow Witch Rising, and I look forward to book #2, Shadow Sworn. (Fair warning, this book does have some sexual content.)

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

Sophie is a good witch, she lives on a nice little farm she inherited and is happy for the most part....Calder was Sophie's childhood love and he just so happens o move in across the way from Sophie...Calder is a shifter....The town they live in is full of shifters and such. Well Sophie is unfortunate enough to have a lien on her land and it is auctioned...Calder buys it and with ulterior motives....his family is cursed, and was cursed by Sophie's bloodline many years ago...he holds her land over her head to get her to break this curse... but he loves her...Sophie also has been being stalked for many years by a dark witch...and is in a very dangerous situation....but will she have to give in to save the man she loves? GREAT STORY!!! I can wait till book 2! I highly recommend, well worth your time and a credit!

A well crafted tale of good and evil, love and insanity, and a curse that is destroying two family lines. The story line is woven between the 19th and 21st centuries, with the main characters here and now and flashbacks to the original lovers and their struggles. There are shapeshifters, witchcraft, and an evil as old as time. The reader is drawn in and quickly becomes invested in the struggles. I am SO looking forward to the next book. I have never read this author before.
Julia K has a gift for interpreting the range of emotions that the characters experience and enhances the reader's appreciation of what the writer has crafted.
