As police officers, we sometimes get carried away and feel like we are mini-gods, placed on earth to protect others, but every so often we are reminded of our own mortality.
Sergeant Julius King is going through his fourth divorce, though he’ll likely point out it’s technically the third since his first marriage was annulled. Sworn off men until he figures out why he’s so unlucky in love, King gets a distraction he could do without...the brutal murder of a fellow cop with no leads except a hyper-realistic mask caught on body cam.
Two years ago Emmett’s husband was murdered during a prank that went downhill fast. Seen as a liability, Emmett was shot and left for dead. Now struggling to cope with the effects of his traumatic brain injury, Emmett has a fear of the men in blue. But at least he has the therapeutic practice of making masks as a hobby.
The second he sees Emmett, King knows he’s screwed, but he tries to back off when it becomes all too clear Emmett’s brain functions differently. As Emmett’s mask-making puts him at the top of the suspect list, King finds himself searching for a killer as much as trying to prove Emmett’s innocence.
You’re the one I’m fighting for. I’m going to get you out of this alive.
When another cop is murdered and Emmett’s life threatened, can King keep his distance from their only potential witness? Or will he be willing to compromise his job to protect the man he’s come to love?
Marking His Mask is a 80k+ word romantic mystery/suspense and police procedural. This series focuses on cops gone 'rogue' to protect the men they love.

I’ll admit the cover drew me in. I decided to sample the book and just kept on reading. This is the kind of book I enjoy when I’m looking for a guilty pleasure hurt/comfort kind of read.
There’s a lot of action in this book, but I mostly enjoyed Emmett and Julius’ relationship. Emmett the anxious, shy, damaged, adorable twink with a feisty side just wants to feel safe and protected. Julius the facially scarred Sergeant who just wants to protect and feel wanted instead of used by men. These two totally fed my guilty pleasure soul.
Re-read august 2019 I didn't like it as much the second time. And the plotholes were somehow more noticeable with my second read. I'm going with 3 stars instead of 4 this time.
------------------------------
This had a really strong start. The first 30% were total 5 star material. But while the rest was still great, my mind took a slightly different path than the plot did so I couldn’t help but be a bit disappointed with the way everything was revealed.
Emmet is happily married to Ryder when the two encounter three hostile men one night. The three men taunt them and one brings out a gun. And while two hold Emmet, the other one holds the gun pointed at Ryder. Then the guy fires the gun. Everyone seems stunned, since apparently the gun wasn’t supposed to be loaded. But it’s too late now, Ryder is dead. The three men panic and Emmet understand that they are actually cops. But then he gets shot too and he loses consciousness.
2 years later and Emmet is getting by. Although it’s hard these days to take good care of himself. The gunshot wound to the head has given him some brain damage, so he often spaces out and has trouble remembering things.
After Emmet woke up from his coma, he wasn’t quite sure what happened to him, but all he knew that Ryder had been killed and he himself had been shot.
He now makes real life masks to pass the time and to sell them on the internet. But he still forgets to take care of himself. So Ryder’s brother has taken it upon himself to check up on him and to make sure Emmet is okay.
Julius is a police sergeant who is investigating the murder of one of his fellow officers. When the mask the killer used takes him to Emmet, he is sure the sweet, shy man is not the killer. Of course he needs to prove that first, but his instincts scream to protect Emmet at all cost…
I loved the hurt/comfort in this. Emmet was such a sweet character. I really felt for him and what he’d gone through. And Julius was very protective of him. I loved the parts where Julius had to come to the rescue when there was someone after Emmet.
But.. I do have to say that I was a bit disappointed about the big reveal. Both with who killed Emmet’s husband, and who the killer was. I especially wanted the whole world to figure out which cops killed Ryder. But that part was a bit of a letdown.
Still, this has lots of hurt/comfort and the romance was sweet. The villain was evil, and everyone got what they deserved. So an enjoyable story overall.
Another wonderful book from Ms Holmes. It was a perfect balance between suspense and romance. Both MCs were likable, and even though I knew very quickly who the killer was, I enjoyed the chase and the police work.
I liked Emmett. A victim of hate crime, he lost his husband and himself. He is swarmed with fear and anxiety, everyday is a struggle to get out of bed. When he meets Julius it's not romantic or flirty - it's uneasy and terrifying. Julius represent that which brought him grief - the police force. I liked how the author wrote Emmett's life with traumatic brain injury, how she showed his attempts to try to regain an ounce of normalcy, his successes and his setbacks. His vulnerability was what initially attracted Julius. But as Emmett and Julius started exploring their feelings despite the case conflict, Emmett finally started feeling like his old self, he finally started healing.
Julius is a protector. All he ever wanted was to love and nurture, someone to come home to. But after four divorces he thinks that something in him is not right, since every man in his life left him high and dry if not a little bit broken. So he swears off relationships. But nothing is impossible when the right man comes along. What starts as offer of friendship soon develops into strong feelings of love. What he feels for Emmett surpasses everything he ever felt before. Amidst suspicion Julius still believes in Emmett's innocence.
The last part of the book was pretty exciting. Police brutality, murder, stalker and finally being free from distrust when it all comes to light. This is fast-paced, steamy, angsty story told from dual POV. I enjoyed it and recommend it!
‘For loving Emmett might have come with its fair share of challenges, but it was also the easiest thing I had ever done.’
Wow I thoroughly enjoyed reading Marking his mask to the point that I couldn’t put it down, from the very beginning it was action packed and not once did I find it boring.
Emmett has had an extremely rough few years suffering from a brain injury caused by a vicious attack by off duty cops, which led to him being shot and his husband killed. Although his life is hard now he’s found an outlet making masks. His life soon takes a turn once more however as he’s embroiled in a murder crime due to the culprit wearing one of his masks. Julius is a sergeant who has had many failed marriages and that’s known for being skilled and playing things by the book that soon changes however when he meets Emmett, he makes Julius want to protect him even if it isn’t ethical and It’s just what Emmett needs.
“I swore I’d protect you with my life, Emmett. I meant every word. I’ve not known you for long, but should anyone try to hurt you, they’ll not get away unscathed. You’re mine, and I protect what’s mine.”
My only complaints about this book would have to be that there isn’t an epilogue so we don’t see what happens in the future such as; if Emmett takes up making masks again or if Julius becomes a private investigator. Also I would have liked some more scenes with Julius’s prosthetic eye out as he surely can’t wear it all the time even to bed.

Gianni Holmes has a wild imagination, and it showed in the second installment of A Marksman Tale. With brief appearances from the original Marksman, ex captain Connor Marks and his husband, ex officer Mac from Marking What's Mine, they added a level of excitement and welcome back to how it all began.
After reading the synopsis, I was prepared for what the story entailed. What started as the perfect anniversary dinner ended in tragedy for both Emmett and his husband. Now with more issues than he could handle, Emmett is slowly trying to get his life in order. For Julius, a police sergeant, going through a fourth broken marriage was not something he was looking forward to. So, to meet Emmett and slowly become attracted to him was also something not on his list, especially when the murder of a cop puts Emmett in the center of the investigation.
There was so many twists and turns to this book and it kept me riveted. What an engaging ride! I encourage you to one-click and enjoy the ride.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.
Really, really liked it! it's heartwarming, tender, and kind of sad, I'll admit, but every journey comes with its own challenges. I really enjoyed reading(devouring) it! Wish there was more... :)
My request to read this book was initially based solely on the cover, I didn't even read the blurb :) But then I started to read this story & the beginning shredded me, tore my heart out, threw it on the ground and stomped it to teeny tiny bits. When Emmett crawled over to Riley & threw himself on him begging for him not to leave him, I cried such ugly tears. Yes I can get pretty emotional. Seeing Emmett trying to cope and live each day with his PTSD & traumatic brain injury was so heartbreaking. Julius was such a sweet person who had a string of horrible marriages. When a chance meeting between Julius and Emmett, brings out the lust & protective strike in Julius, he can't keep his mind off of Emmett. When a rash of cop killings happen, and the mask the killer wears leads Julius to Emmett as the maker, he is torn between his lust for him & treating him as a suspect. When these two come together, sparks start flying and they darn near lit my e-reader on fire. The suspense/action/mystery/danger kept me on the edge of my seat & I loved every single minute of it. I haven't read the first book in the series, as this is a new to me author & I didn't know it existed, but will be fixing that ASAP.

This cover is absolutely amazing, but unfortunately that’s pretty much all that worked for me. I felt zero connection to the characters, didn’t really see their chemistry, and just the vast amount of police brutality with no or little repercussions was ridiculous. Obviously I’m in the minority on this one, but it’s a no from me
This is a suspenseful, hurt/comfort romance. The writing flows smoothly, and the storyline is well developed. This is the second book in this series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone book. I have not read the first installment, and I had no problem following this story.
Tragedy and heartache consume this book, but I wouldn't say sadness was my overwhelming emotion while reading. The story begins with a heinous hate crime that fuels the premise of the remainder of the book.
Dealing with the loss of his beloved husband, Emmett is still struggling years later due to his own traumatic injury and fear from the attack. He's not the same man he once was, and he knows he most likely never will be again.
Going through his fourth divorce, Julius is hurt, insecure, and tired of being used and manipulated. He has his own insecurities that have been thrown in his face by people who were supposed to have loved him, not to mention perfect strangers passing by. The one thing he knows he can count on is his job; a police sergeant. But police are the one thing that frighten Emmett the most.
When a Brother in Blue is found brutally beaten to death, the man-hunt begins before panic can overtake the city. A chance encounter brings Emmett to Julius' attention, but the outcome almost shatters Emmett's fragile stability.
The relationship between the two MCs is haunting to watch as it develops. Between the terror Emmett feels around police and the guilt he feels over suddenly feeling desire for another man, it was surprising to me how easily he became physical with Julius. Julius, on the other hand, struggles not only with his ethics as a police officer, but also his horrible judgment in men, and the knowledge that something is just a little off about this young, beautiful man.
As their relationship deepens, the danger increases, and soon things come to a head. However, things are not what they seem, and even Julius and Emmett have no clue the kind of danger they face.
This book was unique and it did keep me engaged. As I said before, it is a good suspense novel, but it did not take long for me to figure out who the villain was. The way Julius felt protective of Emmett was heartwarming and exactly what Emmett craved.
Overall, the book is well worth the read, even if the killer was a bit predictable. Maybe they won't be for you.
This is a mystery, hurt/ comfort story. Julius and Emmett are a really cute couple.
The prologue broke my fucking heart. I cried like a baby. I actually read the blurb after the prologue so it was quite unexpected. (Yay!!Go me!!)
I must say that I sort of knew the perp halfway through the book. It's a well written mystery that I really enjoyed. There were times when I felt some of the phrases/reactions were a bit out of place. Its probably just me though. This is my first Gianni Holmes book(her other books have been on my TBR pile for a long time) and I'm really glad I finally around to reading it.
Julius and Emmett are perfect together. They been through so much but they never gave up. I loved them so much.
The secondary characters were all amazing. We meet Mark and Mac from the first book and also Jarrod who's one of the MCs in the third book. I'm looking forward to reading his story.
I’ve been looking forward to reading this book - was it worth the wait? Hell yes!
The beginning was intense, heart wrenching and painful to watch. My heart physically shattered for everything Emmett lost that horrible day.
Emmett became a shell of his former self. The author captured his brokenness in the most haunting of ways. I cried several times throughout this story because Emmett’s emotions were so raw and deep to the point, my heart cried for everything he went through and the struggles he faced daily. His pain, sadness, fear and broken heart echoed with an intensity that left me feeling numb.
Julius was sweet, protective and considerate. As the lines started to blur, his feelings became that much more apparent. The author explored his insecurities in relation to his eye really well.
Julius became Emmett’s rock whereas, Emmett became Julius’s everything. These two were beautiful together and as their connection shined; my smiles grew bigger and the happy tears that came were welcome.
This is definitely one of my favourite books from this author. This book was absolutely amazing and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. Get those tissues ready because you’ll definitely need them.
Gritty, intriguing, steamy connection with all the feels for me! Well written with a wonderful story-line. This was a compelling story for me and i could not put the book down until i had read the last words.
I absolutely loved it. And every part of it had deep meaning. And yes, I am so glad they got him! I always had a badddd feeling about him. I can’t wait for the 3rd book.
A fantastic romance with a mystery that holds your attention throughout the narrative. I really felt for Emmett and the life he now lives because of the actions of others but he's found something to be proud of with his therapy of mask making now making him an income. That is until his masks are discovered as the one worn by a murderer, with Emmett as the prime suspect. Julius is going through his fourth divorce, low on life and now stressed at work with the murder of a fellow police officer. His first and second meeting with Emmett kindle something within the nurturing side of himself but that changes when he encounters the man as a part of the murder investigation. The two men together have an instant connection and they work really well together, each complementing the other's personality and mental well-being. Though feelings build quickly on both sides it does feel as though it's natural for the characters. We have several good secondary characters that interact well with the MC's, both positively and negatively. We also have the couple from book one pop in to assist Julius with the case and Emmett. This is a well written murder mystery though my instincts were on quite early on as to who the actual culprit is but there were a couple of moments that had me guessing. Highly recommend, I enjoyed the story, intrigue and relationship that builds throughout the series. This book can be read as a stand alone, even with an appearance from the previous book's couple, it doesn't cause any confusion or detract from this book. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
This book tore at my heartstrings. Emmett is broken after the murder of his husband 2 years ago when he was also shot and left for dead. Because of this he has lots of problems, anxiety...fear...difficulties thinking and focusing. He sleepwalks and wakes up barefoot and in his pjs on his husband’s grave. Because of what he went through he’s terrified of the police. His story was hard to read, in the best way; the way that shows what a talented storyteller the author is.
Julius is a cop, hardwired to want to protect people. He’s had a habit of choosing the wrong partners in his life and is currently divorcing husband number 4. He’s had a hard life with the divorces and accident that took his eye. Reading his story I could tell how much he just wanted to protect and look after people.
The main characters didn’t seem like they would mesh - the protective cop and the man who is terrified of the police. I loved how they came together; how Julius worked patiently with Emmett to show him that he was worth protecting. The issues they were facing with the murders of the cops and the danger that Emmett was in kept me hooked just as much as the relationship between Emmett and Julian as the stories intertwined around each other to come to their dramatic conclusion.
Although the book is the second of the series I started it without realising this when it was recommended to me. I now have to go back and read book 1 while eagerly awaiting book 3. A fantastically thrilling and heartbreaking tale from an author who’s writing is gripping and emotional.
I received this book by the author and This is my honest opinion. This was a new to me author and though this is the 2nd book in the series it can be read as a standalone as I haven't read the first and followed easily enough. To be honest it wasn't what I was expecting, I love mystery books but this one gave no challenge to who the culprit was, which was a little disappointing for me as I love the guessing and trying to work out who dunnit. But what the author did give us were two complex characters with flaws, emmett who after suffering a brain injury is slower and has to have time to think things through. He's also got anxiety and a deep fear of policeman due to the incident that changed his and cut short his husband's life forever. Julius is a sargent, who is a serial jump head first into a relationship and wants the whole marriage close couple relationship as is testament to his 3/4 divorces. He falls for men that play on his protective and needyness. I also liked that the author gave him his own complex with his loss of sight in one of his eyes and his self consciousness over it. These characters were brilliant and their whole dynamic together was just really nice. It was really sad at the beginning and made my heart break for Emmett with all his fears and I thought the author handled this brilliantly that we really got the emotions from it. A really good story with suspense but the characterization was just superb
Original, highly gripping love story with a really well-written crime plot. Very enjoyable read!!
Emmet is a very special MC with a horrible trauma in his past, and who still grieves for his murdered husband. He’s the kind of character you immediately feel protective of and I really needed Julius to prove himself worthy. Julius doesn’t have a great track record, as far as relationships go, to put it mildly. Emmett and Julius don’t exactly have a sweet meet-cute, and don’t make the best first impression on each other. It was interesting to see how things between them developed from there. There’s some angst in this book, and plenty of very emotional, moving moments. It’s an intense read. I loved it!
Emmett’s fear and distrust of police officers transfers to the reader and helps to create an atmosphere of unease and urgency while reading the book. It was hard to figure out who the good guys were and who the culprit(s).
The crime plot makes for a thrilling, nerve-wracking change of pace and brings a real sense of danger and suspense to the book, making it nearly impossible to put down. The author throws in some surprising plot twists as well and paced the story perfectly. This is a book you’ll want to read in one sitting!
Wow! Marking His Mask, the second book in Gianni Holmes' A Marksman's Tale series, is remarkable.
First, Can we talk about this cover? Holy crap, it's amazing! And the story is even more amazing. From the start of the prologue, I was absolutely hooked!
Note - If you don't want to read about dirty cops, skip this one.
The entire story had me fascinated. It's fantastic, the action/suspense is wonderfully developed, and will keep you intrigued throughout.
Emmett and Julius. I can't possibly do justice to these two men. Julius' story is as heartbreaking as can be, and his struggle to survive each day is agonizing.
Both men struggle with their flaws; Julius with his facial scars and prosthetic eye, and Elliott with his anxiety and brain injury. One of my favorite things is the way Elliott loves Julius' imperfections. Together they can help one another to feel normal and whole again. But they will have to fight hard to get there.
Marking His Mask is an extraordinary comfort/hurt tale. It's an amazing romance mixed with mystery, grief, and a whole lot of anxiety. And I loved every damn second of it!
4.5 rounded up to 5 stars. Book 2 in a series but I didn’t realise this before I started reading. It can definitely be read as a standalone without feeling like you have missed anything. I enjoyed this book a lot although I did correctly identify the guilty party very early on. Emmet is clearly traumatised from the past and Julius is quick to recognise this and adjust his actions so as not to cause further harm. The hurt/comfort is high and both characters have their own insecurities to work through. I was a little bit annoyed with Julius for not coming clean sooner knowing how it could affect his job and the devil on my shoulder would have liked to have seen some more consequences for the three officers involved in the event which started it all but none of this was enough to actually spoil the story. Time now to go back and read book 1.
Marking His Mask by Gianni Holmes delivers a fantastic story filled with mystery/suspense, action, drama and romance. I was drawn in straight away and never once did it let go.
The main characters were amazing. Their chemistry, interactions and point of view capturing my attention and my heart. Julius and Emmett ♡♡♡ Julius who has had bad luck in love but goes all in with the special man who draws him in and turns him on like no other. He will protect Emmett with everything hes got. And Emmett who doesn't let past loss keep him from embracing what could be, even if the scars are still deep. Loved these men! Made me want more.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
This is the second book of the series but I read this without having read the first didn’t matter as this could be read as a standalone. This is a hurt/comfort book and I spent most of it wanting to give Emmett a hug. What he went through at the beginning was quite hard-hitting and the impact of that is felt throughout. Julius is a cop who is going through his fourth of us and he’s done with relationships but then it engages all his protective instincts, which starts off as a offer of friendship soon becomes the most passionate of affairs.
Although I guess who the bad guy was pretty early on the book is filled with action and it’s fast paced, so it’s a book that I couldn’t put down. I will go back and read book one and I’m greatly looking forward to book 3.
Second book in the Marksman Series, but can be read as a stand-alone.
As an earlier reviewer stated, the cover drew me in, and I’m so thrilled to find a new to me series!
Julius, a cop by trade, has a horrible track record with relationships. Going through what amounts to his fourth divorce, finding number five in the grocery is the furthest thing from his mind.
Emmett, was left for dead in a gay bashing that made him a widow. The damage caused from the bullet he took, literally turned his life upside down to a point he barely remembers to take care of himself.
These guys was SO good together! I can’t wait for the next installment!
This was a very gripping read and had the perfect balance of romance and suspense. There were twists and turns I didn't see coming although I did guess and solve the case correctly. I liked Emmett and how strong he was, especially after all he'd been through. Julius was a protector at heart but fought against it for a while there. I liked their chemistry and that things didn't just immediately rush into romance with them. Also, I enjoyed some of the secondary characters and was quite intrigued about that snippet at the end for book 3. I hope there's more of these guys to come- I'd love there to be book 3 and these two make an appearance! Overall, a great read with a HEA for the pair.
Hot cop & a beautifully broken artist is what this book holds. I wanted to hug Emmett and whisper that everything would be ok. I wanted to hold Julius and remind him that he was a wonderful man. Instead they did those two things for me. Emmett & Julius are without a doubt one of the most beautiful & heartfelt couples I've read. This is the second book in the series and although you can absolutely read it as a standalone, I enjoyed seeing Mark and Mac (MC's from book 1) show up so happily in love
After surviving an attack that left his husband dead and his own life on ruins, Emmett is terrified of police officers. After meeting Julius, he found one that he could trust. Julius had the patience necessary to help Emmett close that chapter of his life.
I loved both men. Flawed yet loving. Certain they did not deserve happiness. I figured early on who the individual was who was carrying out the murders being investigated.
It was a shame how those around both men viewed them. Both loving and willing to give everything. Cannot wait until the next book!
Emmett is still trying to figure out his life since the murder of his husband and his almost death. The one thing he knows is not to trust any police officer. Julius is dealing with divorce number four when he encounters Emmett at the store. Unaware of the absolute fear that police cause Emmett, Julius thinks he is actually hiding something. Then the murders begin and Julius is stuck between his job and protecting Emmett. This definitely has all you would expect from a mystery and will keep you on your toes throughout the entire story.
Quite an enjoyable read! I love a good mystery/romance story. I was immediately drawn into this story and didn't stop reading until I reached the end.
The chemistry and connection between Julius and Emmett is wonderful. Neither one has had an easy time with life. Both have experienced pain and disappointment. Each is exactly what the other needs. This story will take you on quite the ride!
