*Born Captive is Book One of the Broken Angel series. Welcome to Penelope Wood’s dark and twisted Reverse Harem romance omegaverse. There is absolutely no cheating, and the final book will include a HEA that will leave you completely satisfied. This full length novel contains triggering elements. If you are easily offended, don’t say I didn’t warn you.*
Anytime I see reviews that say, "I was confused," I want to read the book. A pet peeve I have is when authors over-explain things in books. I like having to put the pieces together myself. That kind of vague world-building was here. . .except it remained so vague to the very end. The post-apocalyptic world here is captivating. Yet I felt like the author did not drop enough hints to explain what was really going on. This became clear as I got to the end. Major plot developments involving Cassian, his mother, Ruby, and the fallen world did not seem fully-explained. If I had been reading this book in the middle of the day, fully sober, it probably would have bothered me more. I read this book at ungodly hours of the night - I was so sleepy/out of it/not fully cognizant I didn't mind and my imagination filled in the gaps until I fell asleep, haha. I'm rating this book more generously because it was so good at putting me to sleep. Not to imply I didn't find the storyline interesting, I'll be reading book 2.
I wouldn't recommend this to people out of KU though. The reviews that describe this book as disjointed do have a point..even with the sex scenes...sometimes I had no idea what was going on, what body parts were going where.
It had so much potential, but I felt the execution was lacking. Devastating in what this story could have been had there been more attention paid to small details. There definitely could have been more coherency when it came to the plot, sequence of events, scene transitions, etc. Sometimes the prose was so beautiful too. So much potential.
When it comes to Omegaverse reverse harems - I did like this one more than the Alpha Clarity Series by Ivana B Kinkee, Hunting the Renegade Omega by MD Pentacles, and Carolyn Faulkner's Omegaverse, despite the issues. All of those series I rated 1-2 stars, so I feel a 3 star rating for this book is fair and accurate for me. One reason I liked this more is that the characters did have personalities outside of their biological drives, and there was an outstretching plot set in a fascinating, atmospheric post-apocalyptic setting. I just felt like the author should have spent more time hammering out the details of the world, exactly what was going on, and dropped more hints in a coherent manner throughout this book.
I am voluntarily reviewing an Advance Reader Copy of this book, and if I had paid anything for this book I would have been furious. Penelope Woods must be a huge fan of Addison Cain, because this is a pretty blatant rip off of her books and a not particularly good one. The whole book was disjointed, hard to follow, it was impossible to sympathize at all with Rae, or any of her harem. It's rare that I write this negative a review, but this book was just awful!!!
I am writing an honest review after I finished Born captive on my KU.
I give this book a solid 3 star. I have read many omegaverse romance to the point that whatever is out there, I think I finish them all.
Personally, I find that Born Captive storyline is very confusing and lacks emotional depth. The writing style is quite difficult to follow. At one point, they are doing one thing and the next sentence, they proceed with totally different action. It is just frustrating and reading flow is not smooth. Also, everyone seem to be acting on an impulse. The story was not written from anyone's POV and when the writing is not clear crisp, it is just a narrative and very messy. The three Alphas are essentially the same with no distinction in their action or behavior. Since, there is no distinction, therefore, I dont feel this is Reverse Harem genre when technically it is. The sex scene is neither romantic or erotic. They have no chemistry. The mechanic of the sex scene is also not well described. ( don't really know who is doing what?). The villain is also flat with no depth. I don't know why he behaves badly and I don t think anyone knows his motivation.
My recommendation would be - If you have KU and you have time, give this book a try - If not, there are many good Omegaverse out there that will leave you breathless and mesmerized.
Even though I gave a negative review for this book, I will still read the next one in the story to see how the story unfolds and if any characters have growth.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. OK, so this one is just bad. The story itself is kind of interesting but the writing is just bad and confusing. Often I had to wonder how they get from one point in the story to the other one when they have been somewhere else just a few sentences before. I could hardly - as in, not - keep up.
I am a huge fan of this genre and I really wanted to love this book but is was just so confusing at times with the story jumping around and the author using the wrong characters name a few times. The story is very dark and violent, as expected, but there is no emotional connection between the characters at this point in the story at all. The story has so much potential and just needs to be cleaned up and smoothed out a little.
So many times I found myself having to go back and reread portions of this book. There was a lot of confusion and at times contradictory scenes. Didn’t hate it but would only get this thru KU

This bizarre, totally dark story leads you into the realm of fantasy and new world. Your grip on reality is in question as you follow the trail of a strong and determined omega who slowly realises her worth. Following the demise of the world as they know it. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of this captivating story.

I was really hoping that this book would answer my questions from the prequel, but it didn't! I tried, really tried, I just couldn't follow this story. It was jumpy and so disjointed that I couldn't keep up. I'm quite disappointed in this story. I think it could be good but it needs a lot of attention to get the story to flow.
I can't believe I'm doing this... I never leave negative reviews, and I rarely don't finish books, but I just can't with this one. I'm even more confused than I was before. There is a lot going on with this one that is unclear and I can't spend all this time going back and re-reading things to try to figure something out. I believe that there is hope for both the author and the story, but right now the whole thing feels directionless. I also am so confused about the world, the elements of who this species is, and a lot of the sci-fi stuff isn't explained in a way that I can see and understand it. It is also complex enough to need that extra depth of explanation. I love dark, twisted, unflinchingly disturbing stories, and I think there is a kernel of that in this one, but it's too all over the place to make it all work. I really want to like this one, but I was only able to get through about half of it before I gave up.
I was truly disappointed. The characters were weak. The story line is a hot mess. I could not keep the story organized in my head. Too many mixed matched sentences all through the book. I believe there is a good how ever dark story underneath the mess. An editor needs to get their hands on this book
This book clearly started life as Wren's Song fan fiction which is fine but unfortunately the book was a mess.
The author clearly has a vision and the world she was creating here has a lot of potential. There were glimmers of something really interesting here! Unfortunately the prose is far to disjointed and confusing for any of it to shine.
Its difficult to keep track of who is doing and saying what. Nearly impossible to follow events or even understand everything. Just overall a miss.
I found this book really hard to get into. It was very confusing and I didnt get any feelings whilst reading this book, which is how I rate my reviews. I think this is the first book I've read from Penelope Wood and it hasn't made me want to read any other books from her. So sorry but I am honest when I do my reviews.

The story picks up loosely from where Born Taken leaves off. Rae wakes up in what seems to be a hospital room. She is exposed to tests, procedures and floods of memories of other places and times. As Cassian continues to hold onto her because she is “special, Rae begins to question all that she thinks she knows. In the mean time Vash, Lucas and Killian are alphas, rebelling under Cassian’s rule. Each of them has emerged as leaders from the Ouroboros realizing that Cassian has been misleading the “pack”. Clashes between Cassian and the three alphas eventually result in Rae being stolen from the facility. Finally Rae can see reality and the post apocalyptic environment with its harsh living conditions that everyone is exposed to. As Vash, Lucas and a Killian maintain control and ultimately dominance of Rae in all ways, her “special” ability is revealed. This story is a melding of people with animal kingdom urge themes based in the post apocalyptic world of Mad Max, the control of Big Brother in 1984 and the almost religious zealots around procreation in the Handmaids Tale. Interesting. Complex. And dark-very dark at times. The cliffhanger ending leads us to think the characters are escaping, but we can’t tell if they really are....
I liked the continuation of this story and sort of where the plot leads. I did find that it was hard to understand or empathize with any one of the character because we only see/hear mostly superficial words and actions. Some of the words and actions are very harsh and crude.... which was hard to read at times. The plot seems to jump around a bit but I felt that I could sort out what was mostly going on. I am curious where the plot will lead in the next book. I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I really like the whole idea of the Omegaverse writing but I have yet to find a author who could in my opinion successfully pull it off! This mess right here was a waste of time I couldn't even finish it! There was so much bile and fluids flying around in every sentence I don't see how this author would think that would keep any reader invested, just in the very first sentences she opens the book describing some woman being violated or I'm assuming it's a women being violated by some tentacle monster that has man parts at the end leaking men stuff if you will (sorry trying to keep it as clean as possible so Amazon doesn't hide my review LoL) anyways then there is this sick twisted guy and his crazy momma who is after Rey and he uses her DNA to clone her over and over and once they're ready he pretty much mutilates them. Rey was in a clinic and she was being used as a guinea pig I guess to try and help other women be able to start having babies again and she's taken by three Alphas and they use her make her bleed and then they try to baby her and repetitively call her "their precious" after I reached that part I said nope no more this is way too F'd up for me it's not even good writing, I can suffer through gore and rough intimate scenes if it's good writing and makes freaking sense but this book was all over the freaking place I didn't know what the heck was going on and still don't so please don't waste your time even with Kindle Unlimited I refuse to waste precious hours of my life on this mess!! Oh and all those who believe Addison Cains Omegaverse is the Holy Grail of Omega stories I really don't understand you. I won't knock her as an author because she can at least write but the way she writes her stories suck just as bad as this lady that chick went through the first two books hating her Alpha only to finally fall in love with him and ended up losing her baby because she was kidnapped by his lover and thrown into a room with a couple crazy Alpha Males that raped her til she was at deaths door and if that wasn't bad enough the book ended of a freaking Cliff Hanger! Yeah I'm sorry I just don't see how that makes for good reading. Hopefully one day some author that knows what they're doing will show them how it's done and write an Omegaverse I can actually stand to read.
If you're not really tough on reading a chaotic book, chaotic written with underground sentence structure and chaotic structure and many missing connections, tough chaotic flow and actually no clean transitions with missing POV, then this book/series is not necessary and should be avoided.
Unless you are extremely bored and don't care what you spend your time reading.
For a long time I didn't torture myself so much through a book. With a self-critical approach, that perhaps I lack the intellectual access or horizon, I was able to finish this book thanks to my endless hope that things would get even better and a little curiosity.
As a result, it was not worth it for me, wasted time, not conducive to the theme of RH and Omegavers.
The idea and the hunch of an exciting story is there, parts of the story have potential, but unfortunately the realization, totally underground, just bad, in my opinion.
Towards the end there is some explanation and clarification of the situations and storylines, but that's not really enough. It's too late and the characters, whatever they are, stay flat, colorless, incomprehensible and without emotions or connection.
Whether book 2 and later book 3 will still be read by me, I can't rule out at the moment, but doubt it. Here the blurb was the best part of the book.
I‘m sure the author could do better and will be better.
The plot definitely thickens with this book, and the character Cassian is salivating and quite ready to take his vested interests to the next level. But first he has to hunt down his brothers, Vash, Lucas, and Killian.
Wren is slowly finding her own voice as well as her value to the pack beyond just as a rare Omega breeder. The three Alphas who have stolen her from Cassian know he is always willing to flex his power, leading with brutal force the Ouroboros in their sector, but while they are running and protecting their precious captive, they are also desperately searching for the cure they need to fix the cruelty Cassian has doled out to the leader of their little pack, Vash.
There are elements from the first two books of Broken Angel reminiscent of another popular Omegaverse series I follow as well as popular films or tv shows, particularly names, but the developments are definitely twisty and unexpected as more is revealed. ------------------------------------------------ EDITED ON January 31, 2019: Please note that the name "Wren" used in my review was the name of the female Omega in the ARC I had received from Booksprout, for both ARCs entitled Born Taken and Born Captive. I am now aware that the author has since changed her name to "Rae."
With regards to other names such as "Precious" and "Severin," they cannot help but bring up two movie series I rewatch every year with my family.
DNF. Not sure what to even say here. The writing didn't work in a way that engages the reader. On the one hand, I understand the idea of an unreliable narrator who uses a disjointed, stream of consciousness to convey the emotion and action. There are some writers who do that exceptionally well. This author is not one of them, especially as the story is not really told from Rae's point of view. One could maybe argue that it is sort of told from limited third-person point of view from her standpoint, but the actual writing does not do that.
The characters? None of them are even remotely sympathetic. Maybe there is some Stockholm Syndrome going on with Rae, but then she does things that show her to be stronger than the victim that she is typically characterized as. At one point, she is strong enough to kill, but the next she is groveling and begging? Nope. Doesn't work. The others seem to be split personalities. One minute they are all nice and protective of her, and the next they are treating her like garbage and sneering at her.
There are other writers in this genre who have stories that are much more compelling and better written. Skip this one.
This was probably one of the darkest books that I've read so far. It would almost be wrong to say that I enjoyed it but it certainly gripped me. First of all, I would like to mention the excellent world building in this book. The author took the time to create the kind of atmosphere that allows the reader to experience this pretty horrific new world along with the characters. I like the character development for both the heroine and "heroes". Wren started out as barely human and definitely started coming into her own by the end of the book. I cant wait to see where the author takes her character in the second book of the series. This book also had one of the vilest (in every filthy way) villains I've ever had a change to meet on the pages of any book. Beware that this book is full of triggers and is not for the faint of heart. But if you are brave and not too squeamish, definitely give it a try.
Worst novel I have ever had the displeasure of reading
I’m not sure if this was the author’s first novel or not, but I found the writing style quite lacking. The point of view would shift frequently enough, that it was difficult at times to determine what was happening. This became even more irritating when the novel was close to its end, as it was difficult to determine if something was happening at the same time as another event or afterwards. The author also lacked depth with developing her characters in a way that was easy for the reader to relate with them (very hot and cold personalities). Descriptions of locations were lacking and transitions from one scene to another were very hard to follow. In short, I will not be reading anything else by this author for quite a while and hopefully by then her writing style will have improved greatly. She does have potential as the actual plot (from what I could follow after having to re-read several sections) was unique.
Wren has here three babies as she is pregnant the one father goes off looking for someone and she feels that the babies are going to die so she runs away to the hands of the guy trying to kill her men. But come to find out its to save one of the guys that she loves. They meet her twin sister Ruby but get a bad feeling and don't realize it into they are locked up with the other prisoners, the babies are taken away and Wren is put moved to some where else. I still have not figure out what it is that makes Wren so special other then being able to carry 3 kids at once. It is all over and a book that u need to be able to sit down alone and a quiet spot to put together, even then you are left with more questions.

DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO AVOID A MIGRAINE. I have never wanted to pull my hair out in a novel, this was the first for me. Ofcourse the author has copied from other omega verse authors, so much that she couldn’t even come up with original names. It’s like multiple Addison cain novels into one novel. It had so much going on and nothing happening at the same time. There was just no emotion to it, no depth to it, and definitely no clarity. I just didn’t understand what the hell was happening n trust me I’m not new to omegaverse. The alphas were pu**ies, the omega was fluctuant in her role, sometimes she’s dominant, others submissive, all in all she was only talk mo cock. She spoke so much n so arrogantly but didn’t perform Jack. The bad guy changed by the second.
This first book is just as dark as the prequel but with it so much more to the story. Cassian continues his search for Rae, who is securely held by a dying Vash and his pack. Killian and Lucas become increasingly doubtful of Vash's leadership, but follow his orders as a good pack should. Rae still longs for her freedom, but will she ever get it? I couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next book in this series. I read some of the other reviews and must respectfully disagree with the statements of this seeming disjointed...I sincerely believe that the author did this on purpose. Rae has memory issues, it's a somewhat dystopian time and that jumpy feeling just fits too well to be bad writing. I've read plenty of hastily written and just plain bad stories over the years and this is not one of them.
I read dark and i love reverse harem novels, but this story was both but sometimes a bit confusing as well. I did enjoy reading this story, but a few times i have to say i had to raise my eye brows in wonder where the story was going to. Three Alphas and one Omega, she has been kept in a facility only to be taken by three Alphas. In a place and time where there are so few females she is broken but soon comes to love her men. But she is still been hunted after all she was surposed to be made for only one man.... A certainly different book to read but i enjoyed it once i understood where and what was happening
Born Captive is the first book in the Broken Angel Trilogy by Penelope Woods. This is definitely a dark and twisted journey the readers are embarking on by starting this series. I found myself pulled into the drama, intrigued by the characters and needing to watch the whole story unfold. There were parts that tested my limits for how sinister and how outrageous I enjoy my reading material but I couldn't walk away... I needed to keep those pages turning and I'm glad I did. I need more.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
When I read the prequel to this series I read it with the hope that the confusion surrounding the story and the various characters would become clear. The idea of this story is good but I am still a little confused. The characters are colourful in a dark and dangerous way. I will still read the others even if I have to start at the beginning again to fully integrate with the characters. therefore I will continue to read hopefully. The author does though have a great imagination and flair for the dark.

This story seems to be dark in every way possible. The author has created a future society that comes across as being dark all the time and then the plot around the main characters is even darker. This book felt very heavy as I was reading it and it’s not one of my favourites. That being said, the book was well written and has an awesome cover. I’m sure there shall be plenty of readers out there who shall love this story. Unfortunately, it just isn’t my cup of tea. I usually don’t leave reviews on books I think are bad, but I feel I need to warn others. I didn’t even finish this book, I couldn’t. I really tried for a month. I had not, at anytime, understood what was going on. The narration was disjointed, inconsistent and lacking. The characters had no chemistry and the constant flash back and flash forward was giving me whiplash. From what I could understand of the story, it was a good premise, horribly executed. Note: I even read the prequel hoping to understand better. That just made it worse.
One hot read......So this was the second time reading this authors work and I really enjoyed it. And look forward to seeing more from this author to.I really love a good hot steamy paranormal read that grabs you, and this one did, plus I couldnt put it down til I finished it.Has a great storyline and great characters to read about.Plus its steamy hot to boot, so enjoy everyone.
