Welcome to Sunnyside, a bed and breakfast in the blackened, festering heart of Broadgate - an English seaside town famous for its sex shops, amusement arcades, high-levels of unemployment and sea the colour of a wrung-out dishcloth.
Meet Gary Brown, the homicidal, suicidal, lonely, sexually-frustrated proprietor of Sunnyside.
Come join Gary as he waits for his first ever guests to arrive. You know what they say; women are like buses - you wait around forever and then four come along at once...
Meet Kimberly Henry, a well-to-do socialite who stumbles across Sunnyside after a steaming row with her husband and a two-hour drive from Kensington... Bad luck for her, one could say. It's going to be one HELL of a night.
Sam West is a British, extreme horror author with more than forty books to her name. If you like your fiction dark, gritty, gory, perverse and truly terrifying, then you're in the right place.
3.5 stars. This one got ugly quick. Pretty straightforward torture/rape/kill sorta set up. Gary is a genuine creep, in every sense of the word and he operated in a fairly typical setting. And for such a short story, I feel like it should’ve just focused on him and him alone. The unnecessary additional plot twists made a simple premise into something that was just choppy, rushed, underdeveloped, and overcomplicated. But it’s Sam West, so just expect the standard vulgarity and aggressive sexual content that we’ve all come to appreciate. Far from my favorite West book, but also far from my least. A quick, bloody, and uncomfortable experience.
This is a quick read about Gary and his torture fantasies. It was interesting to have a strong female character in the mix and the Dark Side of Red addition made the entire story more intriguing.
The last twenty percent of this book was a joyride. Torture and a twist?!?!? Such excitement. I'm so glad West added in the back that Tristan's story continues in The Darker Side of Red. I'm gonna download it now and read it. I also love that it took place in the same town as Writer's Retreat
Lovely little story that runs at a nice little pace, and perfectly sets up the ending. Not as gory as some of the other work in the genre, but nicely written.
Well, a very hard read but interesting. I felt that I was just beginning to understand some of the content of this book then it would switch in an other direction. This Sam West is quite good but I would say she has a.lot to give yet.
I loved this novella. Not steeped in gore and guts, but doesn't shy away from the violence either. The main male character is a nasty piece of work, while the main female character pulls you in, with her bad to worse situation. Nice twist towards the end of the story. Sam West can write an interesting story!!
I enjoyed this book, it would probably be three and a half stars but I thought at times it just seemed a bit, immature. Some of the language and descriptions are what you'd expect a kid who doesn't know what he's talking about saying.
However, I did enjoy the story and the little twist at the end. It always gets to me how these killers are so easily talked around!
The book is about a bloke who inherits a b and b from him mum in a fictional town that sounds exactly like Blackpool! He only wants to open it to trap, and torture, women though.
This was a very short story, if you are used to this authors books then you will notice that there isn’t half as much gore and depravity as usual. His books are not usually very long anyway as most extreme horror usually is but this one was even shorter than normal. There’s a little twist at the end and I found it to be an ok read for such a short book. There’s another book kind of related to this one so maybe that one is back to the usual gorefest this authors fans are used to.. will have to see.
I had no idea at this point that Sam West was a female. She does a fantastic job with her her craft and I love some of her work but I’m not into the sexual violence just for the gratification.
I thought this book was pretty interesting. I would recommend to anyone who is into gore and guts. I’ll definitely be reading the next part of this story.
This was a good horror story. I just know to be prepared going into one of her books because of the gross factor. There’s only one particular scene like that in Gary’s Girls but it’s something others might want to skim over. I can read gore without a problem usually. Gross, not so much. 🙂 There was a bit of a twist at the end that I really didn’t see coming.
