As a reader:
My Ratings 5 Stars-The book made it into my heart and if I had to make a top 50 list of all time this book would shimmy its way in. 4 Stars- I loved the book, it was amazing. However, it's not on the elite 'favorite of all time' list. 3 Stars- This is the broadest category. I liked the book all the way to it was average. This should be a 2.5 to 3.5 section. 2 Stars- I read the book all the way through but did not like it. 1 Star- I only give a 1 if I can't finish the book because I dislike it so much. There are a few reasons for DNF. Poor plot line, poor grammar and/or spelling, or maybe just a subject I don't care for. I DO ROUND UP!
3.5 Stars. Aten is one of my favorite authors. I always get excited when I read one of her books. This book was definitely different from what she normally writes. This is a paranormal erotic-romance. While this book is mostly about one potential couple, there is one F-F-F scene. I do have to be honest that I didn’t feel this had the magic that her other books do, but it was still steamy and enjoyable.
This is actually the first book Aten ever wrote even though it is her sixth published book. You can see how far she has already come. This book was written by someone starting their writing journey where in comparison her other books are written by someone who has really honed their craft. Because of this I did feel the writing in this book had some bumps, but I was still entertained and read the book in one sitting.
For paranormal fans out there, this book has vampires and werewolves. While a lot of the particulars of both species are ones you might have read before, there were some subtle differences that I found to be imaginative and interesting.
This being an erotic-romance there are plenty of steamy sex scenes. And while the sex scenes are numerous, there was enough variety that I never felt bored or the need to skim. This is also a romance. I have to be honest I’m not always crazy about bonded connection romances, but I do forgive it more since it mostly happens in paranormal books and I love this genre. Also, the fact that there was some push pull going on in the mains relationship, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, made things better for me.
Overall I enjoyed the read but this wasn’t one of my favorites by Aten. If you are looking for an erotic-romance with a paranormal twist, give this book a shot. The next book Aten is putting out is actually one of three of my most anticipated reads left in 2019. Hopefully the wait will not be too long.
As a huge fan of Aten’s, I jumped full in and was completely surprised at where this went. I kept getting little inklings, subtle things that might be overlooked, but I had no idea that this would go toward the paranormal until it happened.
The paranormal elements are things we’ve seen before but addressed in different ways with a new interpretation on the science of it all. Which, considering this was the first book Aten ever wrote, is quite a feat. There’s a paranormal type of world building and it was handled very well, though I did find that I would have been much more reticent with my acquiescence of this new reality than the characters in this book were.
I don’t want to give away the plot, because it’s integral to the story, but I did find the way that the paranormal was threaded in this story to be refreshing and not obnoxiously thrown in your face.
The two main characters are Sarah Colby and Noble Keller, the former an orphaned traveling musician and the latter a meticulous businesswoman running a bar and music venue. I found myself really relating to Sarah, having had responsibility placed on my shoulders quite early on and the struggle to find yourself in the fallout. The book opens on Sarah moving home after touring and figuring out what to do with her life, and meeting a very sexy stranger in the process that she can’t help but be drawn to.
There is a LOT of sexual energy in this book, and it continues to escalate through to the ending. That said, this book is a romance, and the love story that starts between Sarah and Keller isn’t instantaneous and certainly isn’t without some hitches. I like that you get to see the struggle Sarah has with commitment, and the hardship Keller fights with Sarah’s mercurial feelings.
For a first novel, this is quite good. It’s not my favorite of Aten’s works, but it had me rethink some biases I had against paranormal romances. Her writing style has refined since writing this and the dialogue and internal monologues are a bit off from what I’m used to from her, and it lacks some of the snappy wit, but it didn’t detract from the story.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal romance, very hot sex scenes, and *coughs* equipment use in the bedroom.
This book was provided to me for an honest review.
K. Aten's latest outing, "Running From Forever," the first in the "Blood Resonance" series, was the fourth genre that I encountered from her books, so far. Talk about a writer with creative pursuits spanning nearly all lesfic genres, eh? Let's see, I've read her Sci-Fi, Speculative, Contemporary Romance and now Urban Fantasy books. So far, Aten has hit the nail on all of them with very creative and original stories, and I've enjoyed all of them, thusfar! So, after reading the "Awkward" series, "Waking the Dreamer," "Rules of the Road," I was very optimistic and wanted to next explore Aten's approach in Urban Fantasy, a genre I utterly enjoy in lesbian fiction, particularly in the world of vamps and weres. Enter "Running From Forever."
Although just published this year, this Book 1 of the Blood Resonance series was actually Aten's first stab in writing fiction novels, as she had indicated. Interesting chronology of her published works, eh? Me curiosity was certainly piqued as I wondered what her early writing would sound like. So here goes...
First off, I was struck by Aten's utterly moving "Dedication" page where she openly talked about the genesis of how this story came about. I did not expect that at all. It actually influenced how I read and explored the story from then on. If you ask me, I think reading the "Dedication" page is a MUST before delving into the story. A great homage paid, imo.
I love aten's work, I dont think I've rated anything by her less than 5 stars. But this book, it just didn't live up to the same expectation for me.
I heard it was the first book she wrote, so judging by her later work, I'm not going to criticize this too much. Because if she writes the way she does now, then the faults of this book can be forgiven.
And I will still be waiting with bated breath to see what she puts out next
I always thought it sucked when the theories never allowed them out during the day time so Aten's version is definitely better. I wanted to love this, but it fell a little flat for me which surprises me 'cause I love Aten's books. I'm hoping the second book is better.

Running from forever is my first book from K. Aten and the first FF story that I've read. It is a slow burn romance but is quick with the physical intimacy. It has a slightly different take on vampires and how it's a virus, how they're created and feed for energy etc. Sarah moves back home with her sister and is introduced to Annie's boss, Keller. One encounter isn't enough though but there's a secret that Keller has to reveal and will change everything between the two women. I enjoyed the characters of the story. It was very easy for me to relate to Sarah and Annie's sibling relationship which made it more fun to read their interactions, both the highs and lows. Keller may be strong physically with her vampire abilities but she definitely has an emotional vulnerability and is willing to wait on Sarah to come around to all of the revelations. It took a while for me to like Sarah's character with how she treats Keller to start with but you can definitely understand her wariness of the situation and what she discovers. Keller also tugs on your heartstrings a little when she reveals her softer side and how much she comes to care for Sarah in a short amount of time. Along with the MC's relationship in the book there is a slight plot with people around the local LGBT+ businesses being attacked. I thought that this was going to become something bigger than what it ends up being but it does lead to a big event for Keller and Sarah and a momentous moment in their relationship. Along with that there is a good dose of drama, especially in the final quarter where Sarah's sister Annie and her girlfriend also become involved. This amped up the tension as it's exciting to bring in another element to the story and brings us closer to all of the characters involved. Overall this is a story I would recommend that has good character and relationship development and the intimacy between characters is hot but romantic in equal measure. I am looking forward to seeing how the group move forward with everything they now know and how they love in book two of the series. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
The Best of the Beast! WOW! This is THE HOTTEST paranormal story I have EVER seen and OMG is it AMAZING!!! Sarah is a musician/singer with major commitment issues. She’s fast, footloose and fancy free. One night stands are her norm and she’s always up for new adventures. Her sister Annie on the other hand has a stable job she loves, is finishing school and is waiting for Ms Right. Nobel Keller is Annie’s boss and manages the hottest gay bar around. She’s the strong, silent type with a reputation for loving them and leaving them but no one has ever complained. However, she is not just what she seems to be. She is seriously attracted to Sarah and it’s not just one sided. Add in the lovely Jess to keep time with Annie and you have the makings of a most unique tale! None of these women are the weak, damsel in distress type. They are strong, independent, smart and determined. Good thing because surprises are in store for these women and their lives as they know them will never be the same again! There is a lot that goes on in this book, a lot and its so good!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! The story is fantastic! It grabs you and takes you on the most amazing adventure. There are vampires, werewolves and humans. There is drama and dancing, murder and mayhem, love and lust and so much more all wrapped up in this great drama. The descriptions and settings are unbelievably wonderful and interesting, the characters beyond stellar and sexy, the romance sweet and the heat level of the book, well, yeah…. Maybe it’s not the best idea to read this in public…. Just a thought. You won’t be able to read this book fast enough and I hated to put it down even for just a little while. I was hooked from the start and needed more of these words like I need air to breathe. I cannot wait for part two but I will need to go to the Dr to make sure my heart is strong enough to handle it! <3
Oh yeah! K. Aten has done it again! She has given me the kind of steamy, "gotta leave work now to take a cold-water bath" kinda paranormal romance story. I have read the majority of this author's books and I can boldly say that her writing has never let me down because I have always been able to lose myself in the realistic worlds she creates. I got to have my cake and eat it as well because this story has all of my favorite themes! What could be better than having a romance/paranormal/urban fantasy/erotica all wrapped up in one neat package? For me, there's nothing better than that. With each new release, I will always say that this author has reached the pinnacle of her talent yet she will always find a way to leave me lost for words and trapped in a serious book hangover. Sarah and Nobel have become one of my favorite couples in lesfic because those sex scenes had me squirming at my work desk and I clearly remembered taking several cold showers while I was devouring this book at home. I'm anxious to read the next book in the series (no pressure!)
Every time I read a new book by K Aten I am completely surprised to discover she is excelling at exploring a different genre.
Following Sarah, a singer with commitment issues, and Keller, a very alluring bar owner who just happens to be Sarah’s sister, Annie’s boss this story took me on a wild, passionate ride. I also loved the sisterly connection Sarah and Annie had, despite Sarah’s recent absence, and how all their stories sort of interconnect.
A very supernatural feel to this story as K Aten explored the complications of those that could live among us without being all human, and the effects this has on those they come to care for. Not to mention the understanding of any human as to how knowing, or even falling in love can be affected by who you fall for.
The story was gripping and exciting, filled with sexy moments, and a lot of intense action. As with all romance based plots, this is not without its drama, and when those moments arrive they will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what will come next!
A well written, exciting, and very hot urban fantasy that I highly recommend, and I can’t wait to read more from this series.
3.5 stars. This was an enjoyable read, it had some moments that I felt dragged on a little bit and was disappointed that the whole hate crime hit-and-run sub-plot was just a means to an end to turn Sarah into a vampire. It felt very surface level and had no development or importance beyond that, and the perpetrators are caught unceremoniously and never spoken of again. The sex scenes are numerous and varied, even including an all female threesome at one point. Though there are vampires, werewolves, and mating bonds, readers should not be concerned about any scenes of dubious consent. There is a portion of the start of the book where one of the main characters, Keller, lessens the memories of her sexual encounters with women to protect her identity as a vampire though, so if that would bother you just be aware of it. Overall a good book I would reccomend, if a bit light on the promised paranormal aspect at the start of the book

This was just so BAD and cringy. The way the sex scenes were written was just so of putting. The words used were just.... Sad because the premise sounded so good.
I'm kicking myself for bypassing this book a long time ago. A short while ago I stumbled upon this book again and something was telling me, 'read this book, dum-dum, it's got you written all over it!' I listened, thank gawd. If I had known what was actually in this book, I'd have been all over it like a bad STD.
Noble Keller, aka, Keller, ran the nightclub that had it all. Live music, DJ's with a dancefloor, comfortable seating, sexy clientele with sexier bartenders that served yummy drinks. Oh, and it was LGBTQ+ friendly, very friendly. The story started quite normal until I picked up on a quirk of Keller's she'd perform after every one night stand. Strange. Even stranger was when she had performed that same quirk after meeting and sleeping with Sarah, the newest talent booked at Keller's club. Why, you ask? Ssshhh, gotta read the story. Soon after that, we started to notice other strange things happening with Keller that could give her away, especially to anyone paying close attention, including Annie, Sarah's younger sister who worked at the club. I loved Annie! She had zero issues calling out her sisters bullsh*t at times when it came to intimacy and letting anyone close to her. Poor Keller.
Just when I thought I had figured out this twisted little tale, someone, or I should say, something would arise taking the story on a whole new level. All I'm gonna say is that I never laughed so hard or felt bad at the same time for Annie's girlfriend.
A highly erotic, mysterious, edgy paranormal love story.
My review to the sequel is up and visible for anyone wanting to read it.
