All I wanted was a tattoo. What I got was a broody, enigmatic demigod with an electrifying touch and a mysterious past. We were night and day in every way possible, not an ounce of anything in common, and yet, I wanted him in the worst way. It didn't matter that he was emotionally unavailable or that he was exactly the kind of man who would give my father a coronary should I dare to bring him home. It didn't matter that his heart was wrapped in barbed wire or that he made me promise never to fall for him. None of it mattered because he was the most perfectly imperfect, beautifully tortured soul I'd ever known, and I was besotted, addicted to all the thrilling and wondrous ways he made me feel when we were together. They say a single moment can change the entire trajectory of your life. But looking back, I never could have imagined all the ways my world would change the moment it collided with his.

If you are into hate-to-love, the wrong side of the tracks, damaged hero tropes this is an enjoyable quick read I recommend.
"You can make a prison beautiful but at the end of the day, that doesn’t make it any less of a prison."

💭Pre-reading thoughts:
This was such a random pick, I swear. I was actually planning on reading Vicious by L.J. Shen but my fucking kindle wouldn't open it. And then I met with my friends and we talked about tattoos for like an hour so I saw this and was like: WHY NOT? 🤷🏻‍♀️

nothing particularly wrong with this book i'm just not in the mood for a spoiled sweet princess meets wrong side of the tracks stud sort of story. the writing was a little lackluster and i didn't feel any attachment to either of the characters. and when they kissed i felt zero so i knew it probably wouldn't improve.

like i said, really not awful or anything just don't want to waste my time.

Omg!!! You guys!!! Pricked was absolutely amazing!!! I devoured it in one sitting and could not get enough of Madden Ransom, the cocky, surly tattoo artist and Brighton Taylor Karrington, the pampered Park Terrace princess who brought him down to his knees. I truly loved this story and all the banter and sexual tension. It was such an outstanding opposites attract novel I could not get enough of!!

When Brighton realizes she has lived a sheltered and shackled life with no real life experience who would have thought walking into Madden Ransom's tattoo shop would be the change that her life needed. GAH! What follows is a brilliantly written novel where these two opposites discover things about not only one another but themselves.

Madden and Brighton couldn't be any more different on paper: the good girl and the bad boy. But what follows is a breathtakingly sexy novel showcasing the idea of jumping in headfirst and dealing with the consequences later. They both had no idea that they would shake up each other's lives in the most unexpected ways. And the twists and turns in the story were absolutely fabulous!! This was brilliant! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula

This was an engrossing read, in the fact that I couldn't put it down.

HOWEVER, it kind of trailed off somewhere around 60-70%, did not live up to the climax I was expecting. Suddenly, everything happened so easily. This is supposed to be an "angsty" book and I got that (in a good way, bc honestly I can't stand too much angst) in the beginning, but then Madden seemed to totally not live up to his bad-boy, hard-case image. And the tension that was the best thing about his book just went away. It almost felt like the ending and all the scenes that led up to it was a check-the-box exercise. I was frankly expecting more.

That being said, I gobbled this up. Not really sure I want to read another book by this author - prob not right away, and esp not if I have to pay for it. But it was a good escape for a few hours. I got to live the fantasy (and never would this be a reality, bc I've never in my life been attracted or tempted by "bad boys.") for a little bit.

H/h were both good people. No man-whores or cheating (thank heavens! too many contemp roms these days are about cheating and man-whores!), none of that sort of angst.

H was not an asshole, even if he was cold (clearly self-protective mechanism right off the bat).

h was not irritating and had a backbone.

It was a good story.

“You’re something, Madden. You know that? You’re really something. "
Madden is the kind of guy with an attitude of "what you see is what you get." He doesn't do things to please anyone.
“You’re the beautiful butterfly. I caught you in my net. I’ve taken you home. And I can’t promise you’re going to be the same if you spend the night with me.”
Brighton is a rich, privileged pre-med graduate who has been sheltered all her life. She wants to experience life and an act of "rebellion" leads her to meet the man that will turn her life around and for the first time, she felt the kind of freedom she only dreamed of.
“I told you that if this started to feel real, I’d walk away. "
Can they really walk away from each other? Pricked is a story of two people from different backgrounds and upbringing. Will their relationship stand the test of time and circumstances?

An eloquent writer that she is, Ms. Renshaw once again floored me with this book. It was flawlessly written. The main characters are well thought of and vividly developed. The twist that I didn't see coming, it was very well executed! It just wowed me when I reach that part of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this one from beginning to end. The story of Madden and Brighton just blew me away. By far, this is my favorite book by this author. I highly recommend this book! I loved it so much!

Nah!

This book is not working for me. The story, the characters and the plot. I have mix feeling toward Miss Renshaw's books. Mostly negative.

In Pricked the story is almost non existence. The characters do not develop well. Their chemistry is also cold. The characters develop immature, one dimensial. I got nothing to emphatic with any of them.

In short, I do not enjoy this book.

Meh.

Pricked was meh. I picked 3 stars.. but I'm feeling a huge 2.5 right now. In it, you will meet characters that are beyond frustrating to read about. I didn't care at all about anyone of anything that was happening. I felt nothing when reading this book. Well, other than the wine that I was constantly drinking to make it better.

Brighton was meh. More than meh because she was annoying and frustrating. Then there's Madden, and I lost interest so freaking quickly. These two were not for me. I didn't ship them one bit and honestly want them not to end up together. It would've made this book a bit better than it was. Besides the terrible romance and main characters, this book had some twists and turns.. but ugh, I just gave up.

Overall, I wanted to dnf this book but didn't because I like to suffer every once and a while.

At first it started kind of slow.. In the beginning I thought it would go fast then I realised it didn't.
But along the way I did enjoy it! Madden is kind of an A-hole, but I love me some from time to time! Brighton isn't the girl to judge from appereance, she is so much more. I loved her bond with Deveani, but felt like that was overlooked toward the ending.
I hated how controlling her parents were it was just to much! I understood it to some extend, but it went too far!

I'm so thankful for the rec!

"Rock, Paper, Scissors. I was always the rock. She was always the paper. It took me years to realize it was never about winning, that all she was doing was covering my dark with her light. My hard with her soft."

I had just discovered Winter Renshaw a couple years ago when I signed up for the "Country Nights" blog tour. I was hooked on her writing after that book, and I planned to go back and read every one of her backlist books. Things got away from me, so when I did the "P.S. I Miss You" tour I dropped everything and did it. I spent the greater part of the next 3 weeks binge reading every book - I loved every one of them.

"The way a heart breaks depends on the way it was dropped. Some breaks are clean. And some shatter, sending millions of shards everywhere, shards so small you can't see them. But you always feel them. My God, do you feel them. "

When Pricked hit my kindle, I was so ready. I've been in a bit of a reading funk the past few weeks. I knew when this one hit my kindle that the funk would be over. I spent my day reading this, and it was perfect. We had negative temps yesterday, so I got to do my favorite thing. I was curled up on the couch, wrapped in my favorite blanket, hot cup of coffee, and this fantastic book. That is my idea of a great day.

Madden was rough around the edges, but when he was with Brighton, you could tell he wanted so much more than he admitted to wanting. Brighton was so determined and sure of herself. She knew what she wanted, and she went after it no matter what - I loved that. These two together were so perfect for each other. He was rough and bitter, she was quiet but hopeful, and together they made each other better.

There is something so perfect and unique about her stories. Winter's writing immediately draws me in, consumes my thoughts, and draws every emotion out of me with every turn of the page. Her stories are witty, heart-stopping, and phenomenal. I am forever grateful that the email I got for "Country Nights" caught my eye and I got to find her books. If you haven't read her work yet, then I implore you to dive in and fall in love as I did.

"She was the only girl I'd ever known who could make a smile look sad - and it killed me to know I was the reason."

Brighton

“I'd love a good break. Something to snap me in two. Something that floods my veins with so much emotion, I become physically ill. I'd love to step out of this protective bubble where I never have to worry about a thing, never have to want. Never have to need or worry or fear or miss out on any of life's grand opportunities. That's not real life. I want heartbreak.

Madden

“Someone told me once that the way a heart breaks depends on how hard it was dropped. Some breaks are clean—and some shatter, sending millions of shards everywhere, shards so small you can’t see them ……but you always feel them. My god, do you feel them.”

A pampered very sheltered princess and the brooding tattoo artist should never come in the same sentence, add some demons and sins from the past and everything is doomed, yet Madden and Brighton with a chemistery to light a block succeeded to kindle the flame and defy the norms but on one condition...

“Don’t fall in love with me.”...“I’m not kidding, Brighton. I need you to promise that if you start feeling something toward me, we’ll end this. Immediately. No questions asked.” “I promise,” I say. “And for the record, I’ve kept every promise I’ve ever made.”

From the moment I read Absinthe ,which by the way was my very first book to Winter Rainshaw, I fell in love with her books and here I am witnessing another strong male falling to his knees a d breaking his own rule..

“You so like me, Ransom,” she says as I carry her back to my GTO. “It’s okay if you can’t admit it yet.” Yet. Even if I did like her, I’d never admit it to anyone. Not her. Not even myself.”

4.25 - 4.5 STARS

Loved it! I read this in one sitting - for some reason that happens A LOT when I read a Winter Renshaw book. I was hooked from the beginning. It sort of had a Mad Tatter vibe going on, and I looooooved The Mad Tatter. Madden and Brighton were fabulous characters, but Brighton really stood out in this one. She's nothing like I expected and surprised me at every turn. A great heroine!

This is I do believe my first book I’ve read by this author I do owe other books of hers. I loved this book. Might be my favorite read so far this year. Loved the characters and the story. It had twists and turns I never saw coming (which I love) most I know what’s coming. This one blew me away because it was so unexpected. Can’t wait to read more books by Winter!!

Those books that you just know you shouldn't reread because somehow you know you won't enjoy as much again? I had that feeling with this, but I read it anyway. But also because of it, you notice your growth.
I even wondered how did I give this 4.5? how?🤣

I really like this, much more than I thought i would. Hasta fue medio cute y todo idk.
There were parts that I felt were important went to the background of the story, even when it was a secondary character and I was looking forward to reading more of that.
Madden I loved reading how he fell in love with Bringston without even noticing.
Brighton's dad... wft, the actual fuck.
Veronica, I mean she was a little unnecessary; the times that she showed up, I mean she just came back out of the blue for what? shoot her shot at something(someone) she threw away? Get the fuck out. agg la odié.
I really liked this. bai

4.5 I really enjoyed this one and it was a 5 until the end. It felt rushed. I was ok with the fact it was his dad and brother there but then when it came out that her dad paid him, I just thought that was too much but I think the fact it wasn't a bigger issue was more of the problem. She really just took his word and then lightly told her mom about it. I thought her losing the baby was glossed over too. So overall I really enjoyed the book and the look into their future but thought the ending needed more with all the drama.

Yikes. This was really just...dull. There was no chemistry here at all. There were threads started that seemed important and then the story meandered along without them. Other things just didn't make a whole lot of sense. But the blurb hinted at an emotional tale and that wasn't what this was. The story is pretty lukewarm and rather seemed as though the writer lost interest.

It didn't deliver for me. Might for others, though.

Madden is a tough, stoic tattoo artist with no ink of his own. Brighton lives in her parents' mansion on the country club side of town and every step of her life has been planned out. As an act of rebellion, Brighton gets a tattoo for her twenty-second birthday, entrusting Madden with choosing the tattoo design. No matter how much she tries, she can’t seem to engage him in conversation, and it’s obvious to both of them that their backgrounds are polar opposites and they have nothing in common. When Brighton becomes a volunteer mentor to Madden's sister and their paths keep crossing, their attraction grows and they discover their lives are intertwined in ways they never could have imagined.

When I pick up a Renshaw book I expect to be hit in the heart, but Pricked is surprisingly unexpected, and filled with so much more! Renshaw has really kicked up her character development, and I found Madden and Brighton to be wonderfully complex, beautifully wounded and deeply compelling. I delighted in traveling this journey with them, eagerly watching as their feelings grew, their paths intersected and their pasts overshadowed their present to shake the foundation of every presupposition and create an amazing, never-imagined future. These characters burrow deep, and I willingly relinquished my heart to them. If you like complex, loveable characters with tantalizing chemistry and an evocative story full of heart with surprising twists and beautiful symbolism, you’ll definitely love this one!

I'm really drawn these days to young adult books that have a real story to tell & this one did not disappoint. Brighton experienced a horrific tragedy with her grand parents when she was young & her parents have kept her on a tight leash ever since. Living in a very high end gated community, at twenty-two, Brighton still lives at home with everything paid for including her phone, a car & credit card. Her other siblings are out of the house & work in the medical field. Just as she's finished her pre-med degree, Brighton's parents have big plans for her career, her life & especially her safety. The thing is, Brighton doesn't want any of this. She is not a snob like her parents, wants to be free to live as she pleases without a curfew, wants to be ordinary, make friends that don't have trust funds & her parents don't have a clue. Her rebellion starts small as she walks into a tattoo shop & tells the artist that she wants something small & not visible but he can choose the design.
Madden is the owner of the tattoo shop, a very successful business & lives in the small, hole in the wall apartment above his shop. He's quiet, cold. unemotional & never smiles. His happiness & any life in his soul was taken away from him many years ago & he can't make his way back from it. His father is in prison, his mother neglectful & a drunk, & only keeps his twelve year old sister around so she can receive the government payout for a dependent. Devanie, his sister, is the only light in his life. Very protective of her, he visits often, brings her food & drives her to school. They have a typical sibling relationship with snarky banter, teasing & disagreements but deep down, they truly love each other.
If you're looking for a fast paced story with excitement at every turn, this isn't for you. If you enjoy a slow burn romance, where bits & pieces of the characters are released in a timely manner, then give this a try.
I loved Brighton. In spite of being born into a privileged home, she was open & honest, driven, independent, held respect for all walks of life & was never intimidated by anyone.
Madden, my heart went out to him. His home life was awful, he didn't feel loved by anyone, always looked sad & wore a stone face as his armor. Deep down, he had many feelings but refused to let them surface. By being patient & caring, Brighton was determined to break his outer shell & find the Madden she knew existed, I loved this story, it had a wonderful epilogue & is a stand-alone.

5 "Going to catch myself a butterfly" Stars

This was yet another new to me author so going in I had no expectations. I simply picked this book for a challenge read involving an artist; in this case a tattoo artist. I just finished this book and I am in awe at this authors story telling. This was amazing and I will say I had the wind knocked out of me a few times with twists that I NEVER saw coming. They were definitely OMG moments! The start of my reading year for 2019 has been awesome and it maybe too early to say but I am saying it anyway I think this book will be in my top books of the year come December-really for the shock value alone. This was such a beautiful story of opposites attract and I for one will not forget Brighton and Madden!

3 "And just like that, the butterfly stayed." Stars

After seeing so much buzz on this book I decided to try it from Kindle Unlimited. And Pricked was charming for what it was: your typical unhappy, wealthy, young adult with a kind heart who wants more out of life who meets the bristly, aloof boy with the equally big heart from the seemingly wrong side of the tracks. Subtle chemistry ensues under the guise of a fake relationship, feelings get tangled, surprises reveal themselves ... you know the rest. It's predictable but the writing of Winter Renshaw keeps you hooked all the way through and I really liked how it ended. It's an earth shattering story of the trope but it's a solid romance read.

English:
This book (unlike almost all Winter Renshaw's books) did NOT catch me from the first sentence, but without a doubt by the end of the second chapter I was TOTALLY in love with the characters and immersed on the plot.
It isn't just a love story (fresh and tender) but it's a beautiful story about fighting for dreams and freedom, protecting what you love the most, going for your dreams and keeping hope.
It has everything a good story needs to be that kind of book that you can't leave until finished and that even after the words "THE END" the characters are still in your mind, it has love, comedy, suspense and a great message. Adding a f *** tattooer without tattoos and an innocent exasperating girl.
It is a great book full of twists. If I had to define it I would say that it is a story made up of small stories with a lot of different elements that keep you into it.
I loved what the tattoo meant and Madden's vision of the butterflies (this completely caught me)
I really liked the character of Madden, because throughout the book you think that who is going to need attention and love is Brighton, but you realize that is him who falls faster, who was first arrowed, and that's what makes the story feel different.

I wasn’t sure at first whether I was going to fully connect with this story, it started out fairly slow, a first meet between our couple, then it drifted into describing the characters’ daily routines, scene setting really. But as I read on, I found that I was becoming increasingly invested in the lives of these characters and liking them very much. Soon, I couldn’t put it down.

I absolutely loved Brighton. She’s multi layered and a bit of a contradiction. A very strong willed, take no nonsense from anyone type of young woman, except when it comes to her over protective, overbearing parents. This controlling behaviour on their part is explained as the result of a tragedy some ten years ago, but they are infuriating and I wanted to slap them. However, even when Brighton gives in to their will, there’s a part of her that is fighting back and I was cheering her on. She’s caught between a rock and a hard place really, until an opportunity presents itself and she grabs it with both hands.

Madden is definitely up there with the best book boyfriends. Yes he’s brooding and a little rough around the edges but although he’s a straight talker, I didn’t feel he was deliberately mean for the sake of it. Carrying his own scars from his past, the only commitment he wants to make is to remaining single. That is, of course, until he meets the lovely Brighton. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no insta love here, although there’s plenty of chemistry and initial attraction. If he’s guilty of anything, it’s judging a book by its cover when it comes to Brighton. The feelings develop between them in a really sweet way and it’s clear from the way Madden acts around Brighton that he’s kidding himself when he says he doesn’t want more. Although they come from completely different backgrounds, these two are perfect for each other.

Now, in the midst of their burgeoning love story, there’s some clever twists and turns, deceit and lies revealed, and some secrets are brought to light. One secret I did guess, but the outcome was a complete shock and not what I was expecting at all. All in all I really enjoyed this book. There were parts I would’ve liked to have seen expanded on a little more, including the ending, which I felt after all the drama was slightly rushed. Nevertheless, an engaging storyline, appealing lead characters, together with humorous moments and a sweet happy ending, made Pricked a delightful read.

I read this book near the beginning of the year so I’m not sure how good my memory is going to be since I never got around to doing a review. Since Winter Renshaw is one of my go to authors though and I gave this four stars I know I enjoyed it.

OK, time has passed and I’m still drawing a blank even after reading a few reviews to see if they would jog my memory. It didn’t’ work. Of course on the plus side this means I get to read it again and I’m sure it will come back to me in no time. So I’m going to have to pass on reviewing this one until a reread, knowing going in though that I quite enjoyed it the first time.

In the immortal words of Arnold Schwartzenegger, I’ll be back.

OK I'm back.

It took me so long to do a review that when it came time I didn’t remember the book. But I have enjoyed a number of this authors books and this was one of them so I figured I’d reread it to refresh my memory and I’m ever so glad I did.
Madden Ransom is the hero. He owns a successful tattoo business and he’s sexy as all get out. But he’s had a rough time of it in life and has no intention of getting into any kind of relationship – with anyone. He’s moody and not all that friendly. But when our heroine Brighton Karrington decides to spread her wings and get a tattoo with Madden, there is immediate attraction. At first Madden wants nothing to do with her but, well things have a way of happening. Then he’s willing to get involved but warns her not to fall in love with him as she has no hope.

But deep down, Madden is just a lonely, scarred guy who just needs the right woman to love him and that woman is Brighton. But just as things seem to be going their way, well, there are some pretty big hurdles thrown their way.

I adore both these characters. Though Madden sees himself as tough and aloof, we can see by the way he protects his young sister what a caring guy he is underneath. What at first appears as a cold kind of manner is just his way of not being hurt when really he has a deep well of love inside him. And one can’t help but feel for Brighton. She is the poor little rich girl who at first glance seems to have it all, but in fact is being held in a golden cage where she is not allowed any independence at all, not even in her choice of clothes. She’s given in all her like but now that she’s met and fallen for Madden, she begins to fly.

This book reminds me again why I love this author so much.
