Over all I really enjoyed the book and fell in love with the characters. A great mix of personal development, sweet relationships with some juicy/naughty bits that round it out.
So I’m giving this book 4 stars because there was this part (and I’m not going to spoil it for you) but when I read it I got mad..... like I wanted to go to the author’s house and “punch her in the face mad”.
But then after a couple days perspective I realized that is was just because I identified with the characters so much and got attached to them.
If you read one inspiring story this year, make it this one!–Lexi Miles, Romance Writer/Reviewer
Summary: STARTING OVER starts with Cassie's world being turned upside down. Cassie is a fighter and begins picking up the pieces of her life after a divorce. Soon after the ink is dry on her papers, she is thrust into the new world of dating. As she's determining if she's really ready to put herself out there again she has a few "interesting" encounters; meanwhile, she is balancing her priorities of being a mom and what defines her now as a woman with a lot of love left to give to the right man. Will Cassie dare to take a chance at romance or will she retreat back to her comfort zone?
3 words to describe this novel: Inspiring, Fire-Hot, and Refreshingly Honest
From the moment I started reading this book, I became invested in Cassie's happiness.Cassie is faced with a lot of complications and character-defining moments that some would not be able to master. As I was reading I was both inspired by Cassie and rooting for her to turn it all around. I connected with her because, in some areas of my life (as honest as author Becky Kapjon writes it), I have been Cassie.
What sets this book apart from other romances is the timeline (feels like her healing is not rushed), authentic characters (you've met a friend like Shelley, a douchebag like her ex-husband, and the other antagonizing witches you want to knock out), and you also get an honest look at some of the dating scenes today.
While reading, some moments weren't supposed to be funny, but with her bluntness, innocence, and being true to herself, they were. Even in a point where I wanted to warn Cassie to run for the hills (since she was clueless what she had walked into) it was humorous. No surprise, she didn't hear me through the pages (By the way you will know the part when you read it.), and Cassie's innocent reaction was rewarding as is the classy and adult way she handles most everything with grace and wittiness in the pages of this book.
I must note, it was completely refreshing to read about a woman character who acted like an adult who still had some areas of innocence, took chances in romance, recognized her mistakes (as opportunities to learn), overcame her insecurities, and owned her strength and inner power. Cassie is a strong character, even if she doesn't always know it. You cannot help but enjoy her story because of it!
Overall, STARTING OVER is a quick read with a great pace and a lot of twists! In every moment, there is something propelling the story forward to a fitting ending of her tale of evolution. This is a hot one, fun one, and one of sexual awakening! Author Becky Kapjon delivers!
I give this one 4 STARS! Looking for a great smoldering read that will leave you inspired to make changes in your own life, then check this one out!
This debut novel showed a lot of promise for the future. It had dynamic characters and an interesting premise. One thing that is a bit tough is the jumping of points of view. Overall, it was a good read. I look forward to more from Becky Kapjon
I enjoyed what the author wrote about Cassie! This book is all about finding yourself and becoming a strong woman, which is what Cassie became. I love the authors way of rebuilding the main character. It was a perfect arc. My one complaint is the formatting issues. If you you’re using word, set the paragraphs at .2” instead of the standard.5”. It does wonders for your formatting! Just a tip, one indie author to another.
However, please don’t take this as a negative critique. The meat and potatoes (story) is still a solid five stars!
Interesting storyline and never went where I thought it was going. Very unpredictable. The characters continued to surprise me over and over again with their actions. There were so many twists and turns I found myself flipping pages back to see if I missed the clues of what was coming. There wasn’t a single situation where I could have guessed the outcome. I was surprised that none of the characters were at all who they appeared to be when they were introduced. The best thing I took away from this novel and related to personally was the emotional eating. I’ve done it and bounced back from it and done it again. The author hit the nail on the head with the description of how it spirals out of control before you know it, and how much work it is to take control over your eating and health. With a little editing, I can see this author going far in the future.
