This novella length story was beautifully written, which is the main reason why I continued reading when I realized where the plot was going. I love that Sam and Dean are canonically platonic soulmates, but the thought of them being romantic doesn't really appeal to me at all (for obvious reasons lol), so most of this fanfic didn't work for me. Still, this was interesting enough that I wanted to finish it and see how everything resolved itself.

Not sure what I can even say.

The plot is fairly simple, detailing the brothers' separation after they're forced to confront the nature of their feelings towards each other. Not exactly groundbreaking material, but candle_beck almost prefers simple, plain storylines, so that the focus can stay on fleshing out the characters and their dynamics, something that the author does exquisitely well.

There's something indescribable about the way candle_beck writes that makes you feel almost stretched out with its force. At once so deeply personal and intimate that it seems wrong for it to be read by the public, yet also too staggeringly graceful and precious not to share. At once so normal, relatable, and sympathetic, and yet also strange and intimidating and unthinkable.

The writing never feels indulgent or heavy handed, yet manages to encapsulate the "larger than life" and heartbreaking aspects that seems innately true to this relationship. Candle_beck, for lack of a better word, respects her characters. She gets the points across, but never at the expense of the character's integrity. Every developments are analysed through the lens of the character's point of view, which makes them feel three-dimensional, but not untrue to their canonical interpretation.

If there's anything to complain about, it would be the author's almost sadistic propensity for tragic endings. There are moments while reading that I hesitate to continue, because some sixth sense I've inherited from when our ancestors were still hunted down by beasts beyond imagination warned me that the next paragraph is going to ambush me in a dark alley and beat me to death with a baseball bat, ~metaphorically~, and I wasn't sure that I could take the beating without the promise of happy ending. But!, miracle of miracles, there is! Someone somewhere please start the process of fast tracking candle_beck to sainthood.

Anyway, all this to say, fic good, go read, and candle_beck, if you happen to see this, dm me, I think I'm in love.
