A century old curse forgotten by time. A sleepy town cut off from the world by an ominous chasm. And a girl with the heart of a warrior.
The town of Justice Falls is slave to an annual tithe, but only those with the sight recall the true price of survival. As one of the gifted, Wynter Ashfall has made peace with the curse, for when the silver riders climb out of the chasm in the dead of winter, there is no force on earth that can stop them from claiming their cargo.
But when the man who holds her heart is marked, there is nothing she won’t do to get him back, even if it means climbing into the pit itself. With Death as her guide she must navigate a realm forbidden to the living, a place where every creature hungers for her soul and nothing is as it seems.
In a world where time has no meaning, time is running out, and Wynter must make a choice— finally claim her heart or find the courage to let it go.
Let the tale begin…
A dark fantasy with horns and teeth, Slavic gods and immortal fey.
Debbie Cassidy lives in England, Bedfordshire, with her three kids and very supportive husband. Coffee and chocolate biscuits are her writing fuels of choice, and she is still working on getting that perfect tower of solitude built in her back garden. Obsessed with building new worlds and reading about them, she spends her spare time daydreaming and conversing with the characters in her head. She writes Urban Fantasy, Romance, Fantasy and Reverse Harem Fantasy. All her books contain plenty of action, romance and twisty plots.
Yes I was right to be excited for this just based on the cover! This is so unlike anything Debbie has ever written before. Not an Urban Fantasy trope in sight. This was all Fantasy and I loved everything about it.
After the love of her life gets taken away by horsemen Wynter follows him into a unknown world full of creatures who want to eat her. Wynter isn't the strong witty heroine we are used to from Cassidy, she's just ... normal she gets scared, she needs help and rescuing a few times. Namely by a beast who I'm not sure I wanted to like or not. He's the obvious love interest being on the cover and all but Wynter is chasing her love, so are we in RH territory or love triangle?
Wait... Who cares!! This was awesome
It has just the right amount of everything. I loved Wynter being a little vulnerable. I loved Veres being a little beast and a little sweet. I loved Finn and getting his POV also. I loved the crazy dangerous world. I loved the complicated sexual tension. I loved the little teaser of potential for Wynter to become so much more
I just need the next..right now!
Arc revived which in no way colours my opinion... seriously this may be the first 5 stars I've ever given an ARC _________________________________________ Pre review nonsense
I'm caught between being intrigued with Cassidy's world building and not being too impressed with the actual characters. I'm stuck now though. I have started the series and I've got to see it through to the end. Now take my review as a grain of salt and do not let my review sway you. Captive of Darkness is a lovely read the characters just irked me a tid bit. Go buy the book it may be your next favorite.
this was fine. Way less romance than I was expecting. This reads a lot more like a fantasy than any thing else which is fine but not what I was expecting.
One thing I wasn't expecting was that one of the love interests was the heroine Wynter's step-brother Finn. I'm very particular about step-sibling romance so I like to go in knowing if that's a part of the story and I didn't with this one. However, Finn is barely in this book so it wasn't a huge problem for me. The fact that he was barely present did make it very hard for me to believe that Wynter and Finn had feelings for each other. All of their feelings developed before the plot of this book so we never got to see it which I didn't love.
The other main character is Veres. He's the non-humanish love interest and I did find him more interesting than Finn. However, I didn't really feel any romantic connection between Wynter and Veres so it was hard to get into that story. Everything with them moved so fast but without any real romance and I just didn't get it.
I thought the writing was pretty good and the world building was interesting I thought it was well done and will probably keep developing in later books. I just thought this story wasn't the most interesting story in this world. There were parts that had good action but some parts I found just so dull. I think part of that is because this is the first book in a series and I know things will develop more over the next two books but this first book didn't really hook me.
I don't think I'll be continuing on in this series. Maybe someday when I want a quick read but this first book didn't quite make the case for continuing. However, I would definitely read a different series by this author because I did like the writing and the world. This just wasn't for me.
OK. Phew. I mean, this was a short little nibblet of a book. I really really REALLY liked Veles and Finn was just kind of, wonk-wonk for me (if you can't tell that's an elegant *sad trombone* sound).
I think the world building could use some work. It's like Debbie doesn't think we're interested to learn how stuff works, for the sake of moving the plot along. WHICH! I like (the speed of things...action action action), but also, in a book like this, makes for a lot of confusion. What the heck have I stepped in to?
I found myself asking myself that question for about 80% of the book, until we meet a certain character and then....*info duuuuuump* Like, the biggest dump. Ever.
I am bummed that a certain character appears to not be the focus for at least the next book. I mean. all that hotness and then, boom, he's outta the picture? I hope he comes back in and things get real spicy.
Not sure if i'll pick up the next book, or not. I am also very grouchy about books right now. The end.
Wynter Ashfall has always been able to see the silver riders and remember the people who are taken each year, unlike the rest of the town that just on about their lives as if the victims never existed. And as the day of the silver riders approaches, she sees their mark appear on the forehead of her beloved adopted brother Finn. And knowing he is about to be taken, makes her realize that she can’t live without him, and she realizes that he’s in love with her. But the silver riders can’t be stopped. So, Wynter must follow the riders into the chasm, and take Finn back.
In the footsteps of Orpheus and Eurydice and the journey into the underworld, or even Sarah’s journey in the Labyrinth movie, an epic journey is made into a dark world of mystery to take back a loved one. I loved the beginning of this book! The silver riders and the mark appearing on the designated victims was deliciously eerie and creepy with a side of impending doom. I also loved the idea of the town being cut off surrounded by impenetrable mists. It paints a dark fairytale atmosphere loaded with mystery and danger. And I loved the idea of normal people living in the middle of it, going about their lives. I did think less of this book when I read in the description that it is a reverse harem, so I’m not looking forward to that aspect of it. It diminishes her drive to retrieve Finn and makes her seem fickle, and untrue, and like she doesn’t love Finn as much as he loves her, which is rather tragic. In the beginning there are pages and pages spent on this friendship she has with a mouse, and then the mouse just vanishes as soon as she steps foot into the chasm. I was expecting the mouse to be pivotal from the amount it was talked about in the beginning. An animal accompanying her would have been a lot of fun. I was also looking forward to understanding the silver riders, and the guy in town really needs some come-uppance, but none of that happened in this book (maybe in an upcoming book. One reason why I am itching a bit to pick up the next book). We really just follow Wynter in her quest, which is a really interesting quest through a dangerous, wild world where creatures don’t hesitate in cannibalizing other people, and other depraved acts. We meet Veles who is just as wild as all of the other characters, but he is darkly attractive once we get past his licking her. Ewww. And he nearly rapes her on at least two or three occasions (though the book does manage to stay clean). I never really spotted any romance between the two of them. Lust, yes. Attachment, yes. Romance, no. He appeals the women who love that dark alpha type. -I’m not one of them though. He serves as her guide through the land as we unravel secrets and mysteries and explanations of what the world really is (which comes in one excessively long and convolutedly detailed infodump toward the end, which confused me even more, especially when more hidden history got clichédly added to Wynter’s background (like it was convinced a normal girl couldn’t succeed at this quest. Magical girls seem to be a dime-a-dozen these days. I really could have done without the whole Morrigan plotline). I really loved the scene with the Knockers (though it's rather borrowed from Lord of the Rings -that's the scene with Frodo and Sam in the marsh or where they cross the barrows in the first book). I really do love Finn, far more than anyone else she meets in this story. He’s loyal, protective, shy, caring, and has to work up his courage around Wynter. I am itching to get the next book mainly because I want to see Finn rescued (It ends on a cliffhanger and he’s still captive), and for Wynter to realized fully she loves him since he is her home (but reading some of the reviews on Book 3, I might be disappointed on that last item).
This book is like if Beauty and Beast met Little Red Riding hood and had a love child. And then that love child met Reverse Harem.
I’m starting to realize that every book Debbie Cassidy has ever written is connected to her world Faerie. Literally every single one. I just finished For The Blood series and that series is my favorite so far. Heart of Darkness is ok but clearly Wynter is true main protagonist for when these series finally all connect, so if you plan on sticking around for when THAT series comes out (you know the one where it’s all tied together) then I suggest you read this book just to know who will be the ultimate {I’m assuming} sacrifice to save all the lives in the universe.
I like how Debby Cassidy had the idea to make a bunch of series in separate worlds and connect them all to "hub" world, Faerie. In theory in seems like a good idea but me personally I'm not a fan of reading separate series set in the same universe so I think this will be my last Debbie Cassidy series even though she is a brilliant writer. I may just read the 'Armageddon' book when it comes out (not an actual book yet but I'm assuming the last book she will make of this universe where everything is resolved and all the protagonists in each separate series work together).
Now for this book in particular, it’s alright. There really no romance, not really. I wouldn’t recommend this as your first Debbie Cassidy book if you haven’t read any others yet but I LoVED For The Blood so read that. If you’ve read her other series and wanna stick around for the final show down series then I recommend reading this one. If you don’t plan on reading her other series, then this book is pointless and probably not interesting to someone not already invested in Faerie. Like I said, I don't plan on reading anymore, but Cassidy is a really good writer so I would at least try something of hers.
This book is confusing and difficult to follow, but I could not stop reading it. Each step on the journey could be the step that made everything clear, so I could understand what the heck was going on.
Wynter lives in Justice Falls, a place where people disappear every year and then no one remembers them, except for a very select few. Wynter is one of those people and she lives with her drunk of a father and Finn, a man who was taken into her home as a 10 year old.
Then one day Finn is one of the taken and Wynter will not allow him to to be one of the disappeared. She ventures into the chasm that cuts Justice Falls off from the rest of the world. She enters a world of darkness, pain and torment where the residents don’t remember who they are, they are made up of pure instinct.
Wynter is a strong and determined character, who will not let go of the man she loves. Though she’s smart enough to be scared, she is incredibly brave and will not give up. When in the chasm she is not alone for long, when Veles a strange and powerful demon-like creature saves her.
Veles has been lost to instinct for an unknown amount of time, because he has no memory of the time before. All he knows when he meets Wynter is that he has to help her. He is driven to it.
There are so many dream-like sequences in this book that it is hard to determine what is meant to be reality and what is illusion. It’s probably not a book to read when you are tired because otherwise you will end up with very strange dreams.
I’m definitely intrigued enough to continue my read, because I was provided with enough information in the last couple of chapters, that I’m determined to find out what happens next.
While CAPTIVE OF DARKNESS started out strong, it lost my interest about 1/3rd of the way in and I had a hard time staying in the story.
I really wanted to love CAPTIVE OF DARKNESS. Wynter really caught my interest early on and the story pulled me in, but when she went into the 'forbidden realm' the storyline lost me. I found Wynter's constant lack of following directions a bit annoying at times and I didn't really connect with Veres' character. I'm not quite sure how I would feel about them really being together romantically. I liked Finn and could definitely relate with his and Wynter's relationship, but there wasn't enough of Finn in the story to really get a feel of how they would be together romantically even though they already love each other and they make sense.
I didn't HATE the story. In fact I found a lot about it interesting. I think I just didn't totally GET it. I was a little confused at times about what was happening and I don't think there was enough information given about Veres and the realm that they were traveling through. The pacing also seemed off to me. Some points dragged and other times felt rushed.
Going into my review I was going to give CAPTIVE OF DARKNESS a 2.5, but I realized that I kinda want to see what happens next and to find out more about Veres and his realm SO, I'm round up. There is potential here.
* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This dark fantasy tale is simply awesome. Silver riders are the bane of Justice Falls. They come and take its citizens away, exactly on the same day each year, and only the chosen ones remember. Wynter is one of them, blessed to know and cursed to live with it. She made peace, but when her adopted brother and her love, Finn, is marked to be taken, all changes. Determined to get him back, she follows Finn to the darkness, among horrors and dangers, only to discover hidden truths about herself and meet one deadly, alluring man... I simply loved this book. Dived right in, from the very beginning. And it pulled me deeper with every chapter. Meeting Veles was the breaking point for me. The beast within his body and soul is so feral, yet the man is truly a god. His will and his heart make all the differences, and through the deadly traps of Nawia, he guides and protects Wynter on her quest. Intensity and tension grow with every page of this action-packed fantasy. Vivid descriptions of the lands full of hunger and primal needs bring out raw emotions and thanks to great storytelling, the story flows smoothly and develops naturally. I have to dive into book two immediately!
This is a very intriguing dark fantasy story - the first book in a series - that reminds me of the true fairytales - the darker ones, not the Disney ones. The heroine, Wynter, is on a mission to rescue her love, taken as part of their town's annual tithe. We don't know the details of why or where they are taken, and all of the characters she encounters on her journey are either too cryptic or cannot provide answers due to memory loss. This lends mystery and has you reading the whole way through trying to figure things out, which had me simultaneously frustrated and enjoying the anticipation. There is great potential for romance of the reverse harem variety, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Some answers finally come at the very end that almost seemed rushed compared to the pacing of the rest of the book, but nevertheless were ones I enjoyed a lot and have me eager for the next part of Wynter's journey. 3.5 Stars
This story had a dark, Alice in Wonderland feel to it. The mundane seemed terrifying, and the terrifying strangely beautiful and compelling. There is horror and madness and at the center of it all a naive heroine who is all sweetness and devotion. Perhaps too much sweetness and devotion for my taste, but we got moments, brief flashes, of her potential for war and wantoness. I hope those traits bloom in the dark twisted world she must navigate on her quest. I’m curious to see what becomes of her, but I am even more invested in the characters we are meeting along the way. This was an intriguing start to a new series from an author whose originality never disappoints.
Fair warning, it’s a cliffhanger. The story comes to a nice pause point where it transitions from A to B, but nothing is wrapped up at all. You’ll definitely want to have books 2 and 3 available before you start this book.
This was a good book, it appears to be interconnected to some other stories and characters. So far those connections and glimpses don't affect understanding this story/series which seems to be able to stand on its own. But it is cool to see other characters we met or ones again. Romance wise so far it's both a little angsty-ish and slow burn but I can't wait to see how the reverse harem aspect plays out. We get to know and love our characters here as well as discovering just how big the world is and what's happening right alongside them. I think so far Veles is my favorite there just something about him. We do get just a few twists in this story to go with the action, suspense, supernatural and romantic elements. I'm not going to give a lot of details because you'll have to read them for yourself but I will say I love wynter. I love her how she is now this simple small town girl with a back down and some bravery and I hope she doesn't change massively or anything. Overall a good book would recommend.
I enjoyed Captive of Darkness even though it had a sodding love triangle at the heart of the story. (Can we please stop doing these? Gah.)
Anyway... it has an interesting premise and some remarkably well written figurative language. It does get repetitive in places, though, and there typos scattered throughout, which lets it down.
Oh, and I could have done without the “cocks.” I don’t mind that language in straight up erotica but it was a bit abrasive given the setting. Also, the dialogue could be more consistent. It doesn’t really match the setting either.
Despite its flaws, I enjoyed the story and would read the sequel. This one had some good sexual tension so I’d like to see how that plays out.
Holy hell this book! Initially I was a little unsure of my thoughts but the more I got into the book the more I just had to keep reading. It really starting to take my breath and I was fully invested in what was happening! I admit to having a lot of questions about what is happening but that just makes me want book two immediately and I cannot wait to see what happens next with Wynter and her quest! And let’s not forget about Veles...so dark and disturbing, so intense and compelling, I cannot wait for more from him!! This is an exciting new series by the very talented Debbie Casidy that is full of magic, action, steam, dark and dangerous characters and an innocent and intriguing FMC! Highly recommended.
This is completely different than anything else Debbie Cassidy has ever written. Its almost has a Fairy-tale feel and is most definitely darker and moodier but it also has some wonderful sarcasm and tender moments which soften the storey. It is one of those books though that is intoxicatingly addictive and once you start reading you will find it really hard to stop until you have finished at which point you start craving book Two. There are twists and turns, its faced paced in places with plenty of excitement and sexual tension in an exciting new world - I cant wait for the next instalment as I need to know where this story goes, well worth a read!!!!!
I absolutely ADORE all things Debbie Cassidy! This book is a new favorite of mine! Veles is... well he is the God of Death and has my heart completely. He’s dark, brooding, kinda scary but in a sexy protective might unleash the beast on you way. Debbie’s female leads are always badass and bring joy to my life. Wynter is no exception to this. She is brave, headstrong, not willing to back down, and will stand up for who and what she believes in and loves. She goes through hell for her love. This story pulled me in and kept me gripped tight till the end. It was interesting, a different kind of story and not boring one bit. Do yourself the favor and read this!
I have never been disappointed by a DC book and this one was no exception. I started out not really liking Wynter. She's a bit timid and plays the damsel in distress to Veres at first. Then, about halfway she grows into herself and becomes a budding heroine. Veres is dark and complicated but with a beautiful heart underneath. We don't really spend much time with Finn but I think I'll grow to like him. This will apparently be a reverse harem so I'm excited to see who else joins the group. Basically, I'm just excited to read more.
This is the 2nd series I've started by Debbie Cassidy and wow it's so good! Her world building drew me in immediately and I couldn't stop reading till I finished this story. It's a dark fantasy slow burn RH and you meet maybe 3 potentials in this story with 2 that I'm sure will be in her harem. Wynter will impress you with her determination to finish her quest, especially at the end when she realizes it has barely begun. Loved this first book and cant wait to read more, this author is forever going into my TBR pile.
I really liked this book! It was well written and full of pleasant surprises! I love books that leave you wondering what will happen next, or ones that just pop up with new plot twists. It also wasn't chock full of annoying spelling or grammatical errors. I've read a few books lately that had error after error, even though it had made it to Kindle production. Anyway, I'm definitely reading the next book in the series. I have to know where this is going! I've read other books of Debbie Cassidy's and plan to read more!
I'm in love with the cover! Oh the horns! *purr growl rawr* I didn't even read the blurb before I bought the book. Then I began reading the book and for a while it took me on an epic journey. It was a huge relief that book two was out already.
This was a fantastic story with a soft yet tough main character. The men she encounters are so yummy. This is a well written story where you slowly learn about the characters and the world. It's slow burn.
I highly recommend that you one-click this awesome book.
This is an interesting story so far but I'm confused how she ended up in Veles' world and why he forgot who he is. I know that it's connected to "For the Blood" series but it's hard to see that connection right now. I love that Wynter goes to save her adopted brother, Finn, when he is taken. I don't have a problem with her being in love with him. She also is falling for Veles and I wonder if she will fall for Raven. I am interested to see how they will do in Faerie.
It started off on the semi strong side, but quality went downhill rather quickly and by the end it was an entirely different book from when it began.
Juvenile writing. Poor dialogue and build. Another case of things just happening with little to no satisfactory explanation. Cramming new characters and all the things at the very end made it all feel rushed and sloppily put together.
If I’m being honest with you, I couldn’t remember what this book even was about by looking at the cover. I read it just the other day and had to go to the blurb to get any sort of recollection.
Starting to distrust all books with the claims of being dark fantasy. Too many of them this year have been disappointing and feels like authors are surrounding themselves in echo chambers of high praise that aren’t actually challenging them to be better and to grow.
This book started off quite a bit differently than what I’m used to from this author, but I was quickly immersed in this wonderful storyline and couldn’t put it down! It features more of a Grimm fairy-tale type vibe with hints of mythology, and the plot pulls you throughout, until you reach the end, aching to find out more. I loved the main characters and am really looking forward to reading more of their story in the next book!
This was very different from the authors other books. Wynter got on my nerves a bit though. She never listens to what she's told, and seems to need constant rescuing. She's not the badass that I liked so much in this authors other series. And I did skip over some parts. But the story is very original, and I lined the world building. Will definitely read the next one.
I swear I really don’t believe this author can write a bad book! This storyline grabbed me at the very beginning and didn’t let go!! Wynter is an awesome heroine and fortunately for us it looks like her journey has just started!!! One thing I always love about this authors books is that we never get the full harem at first. We are always left guessing!!! I can’t wait to read more about these characters!!!
