The biggest solar flare since the 1859 Carrington Event is about to bring the world to its knees.
When a huge plasma ejection from the sun hits the Earth’s atmosphere, the resulting EMP pulse fries electricity grids and disables fragile electronics. Transmission wires melt, transformers explode and modern vehicles cease working. In less than a minute, the world is taken back two centuries.
Lauren Nolan is attending a seminar in New York when the blackout hits and the transportation system grinds to a halt. Trapped in the panic that envelops the metropolis, Lauren worries for her children, five hundred miles away in North Carolina. Unable to get word to them, she faces a harrowing journey on her own.
Sergeant Rick Nolan is overseas on a covert ops mission against terrorists. When the solar storm wipes out his communications and his air cover, he and his team find themselves on the same level as the enemy that surrounds them. Caught in a desperate fight for survival, Rick thinks about his family. How is he going to make it back alive?
Trapped in their hometown of Charlotte, the two Nolan children witness society’s terrifying collapse as water pumps fail, food runs short and the law ceases to exist. Frightened and bewildered, they wonder if they’ll ever see their parents again.
Solar Storm is Book 1 of an EMP, post-apocalyptic series about family survival and the challenges entailed. Contains moderate language and graphic action scenes.
This is a typical teotwawki book, better written than some, with the familiar 'CME destroys the power grid', causing panic, chaos, and mayhem. Rick is a special forces soldier deployed in Syria. Lauren, his wife, is at a conference in New Jersey for her job. Their two children, Josh and Lizzie, are at Lauren's parents home in North Carolina when an enormous CME hits basically world wide, wiping out the power grid. This book tells the story of how Rick and Lauren each try to make it home to their children. The narrative switches back and forth between the viewpoint of Rick, Lauren, and Josh, but it's not choppy at all. It flows pretty well, and though parts of it, particularly Rick's story, are somewhat unbelievable, it was pretty good. Maybe a bit too much introspection on Rick's part. There wasn't too much profanity, but there was some. There was some implied sexual content, but it wasn't explicit, and it didn't have the continual rape scenes that are all too often thrown in to books in this genre. Results: it was ok. Some of the military scenes were dull to me, but although it wasn't a must-read, I didn't feel it was a waste of time.
I was very happy with this 1st installment in this Survival series, especially with it being such a clean read. And even though there was violence, it wasn't as graphic or gory as it could have been. I read a lot of dystopian and end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it series, and this one also didn't get bogged down in redundant or unnecessary details, just to make a "word count." Very well written, lots of action and tension that really gripped you, made you think. I have books 2 & 3 waiting for their turns, so if you'll excuse me, I'd like to continue the adventure. 👍👍👍👍👍 A definite 5 stars, highly recommended for everyone!
Wonderfully written. Fully developed main characters and a nice imaginative way of preparing the groundwork for the characters to reveal useful characteristics for an apocalypse.--especially where none of them are preppers. Preppers adjacent maybe.
What I like about the author's stories are that they include guns and he is knowledgeable about them, but they're not the entire focus of the apocalypse. Some other stories spend endless amounts of time detailing the brand, the accessories, etc. It's a nice balance in this story.
Different than the other EMP books, as this one hits EVERYONE.
And I believe this is a bit closer to how it would really go. How long will it take people to realize just how bad it would be? Most people you lose power, you are not going to be worried for a day or so...but how many people will realize that it isn't just the power, but also phones and many modern vehicle.
This book was HANDS DOWN the BEST EMP book I have EVER read. I can say that I literally stepped into this book with each character from page #1. Rob Lopez writes with such vivid imagery and paints these complex characters. I do not have a background in military and I was able to follow along without any questions. The story was believable, which is also something that I sunk into. We start with Lauren, she was in the army at one point in her life, meeting Rick, who was also in the Army, Special Ops, and started a life with him, having children and leaving, while he remained in. She works full time in a job she is not really happy in, being split between mother, wife and full time employee who has to travel at that. Her kids are kind of lost because Mom works full time and Dad is out of the country, or not really present when he is home. Mom goes to New York for a conference and basically all hell breaks loose while the kids are at Grandma and Grandpa's. An amazing light show produces itself. Anything that has anything to do with electricity is DOA, fried. Cars with computers, fried. Boats, Planes, etc. Everything fried. Planes are now grounded. The thing is, Lauren really doesn't know what is going on. She went to the hotel room, slept and was watching the media outlets to find out about the chance of a threat. I think that in itself makes this story so captivating. She wasn't a prepper. She wasn't hyper focused on what was happening and kind of had to maneuver blindly in a way. We then see her as a Mother. She HAD to get home, HAD to get to her kids. This is what hit so hard with me personally. I felt that instinct kick in. So, we watch the struggle to go at any lengths. Lauren needs to get home, that is her instinct. And the trials and tribulations she faced in that feat are relate-able and at times hard to bare, but so real. On the other side of the country, we see Rick, stuck in Syria, fighting for our country. We feel his losses. I think that this was somewhat of a balance, seeing two parents fight SO hard to get to their family. This is what made the story so great. I have given away so much, and I don't want to summarize the entire story, but PLEASE READ, this is the BEST BOOK I have read in a while, and I read a lot! I can't wait to read SOLAR WINTER by Rob Lopez next!!!

The story rotates through several sub-plots of survivors dealing with the apocalypse in different ways. In this tale we study the Nolan family as they deal with the worst solar storm in history. Rick the father and soldier in Syria struggling to make his way home, Lauren the wife of Rick stranded in New York at a seminar and left at home to provide for the children, 12 yr. old Josh the young boy who sees much too much and is growing up much too fast, 7 yr. old Lizzy Josh’s sister, and grandma who is taking care of the kids while Lauren is gone as best she can. Although we have no zombies to deal with we do have the ever present ruffians who always surface in a crisis. There seems to be basically two types of people, those who are only trying to protect their own and what they have and then those who don’t have enough and will take what you have. This is the common theme that runs through this genre of books. The writing is well done, the characters well developed and likable especially Josh. There is a follow-up book Solar Winter, but I don’t believe it has been released yet.
Fast-paced, tight writing, keeps the reader engaged. Intense, but laced with humor and common sense, Rob Lopez gives us a great read here. A Dystopian future suddenly arrives showing all the worst that humankind can be amid a devastated world. A sad tale that in many ways prove true. How can the main populace continue after such a blow? The diehards and thugs yes, but the average folks who rely so much on modern conventions will fall aside to the real survivors. Yikes! While the disturbing events unfold, the reader will be hard put to set the book aside, ready to root for the characters, willing them to succeed at all costs. I enjoyed this.
Well, being in Syria when a massive world-wide EMP hits would really suck. Overall this was a decent story, though at the end a bit hurried to bring the 3 main groups together especially getting from Syria to North Carolina in the same time frame as Newark to NC. Some terms used such as sticking plaster and spanner were odd since they are British and not American. I kind of liked Rick's internal soliloquy of how you can become disconnected from love ones even when you are in regular contact. I might read the next one just to see what happens.
I've read a lot of EMP and other post apocalyptic novels lately and this is one of the best. It's really four stories, each someone you will relate to. Women and mothers in the audience? Half of this book is for you, and the rest about the whole family. I will have to wait for the second in this series, but I don't have to be patient about it.
This book has made me a Rob Lopez fan, and I'm going to check out some of his previous works based upon this experience.
What an unusual and intriguing novel! Unfortunately, in today's society this scenario is all to possible. Rick, Lauren, Scott, April, and their little entourage are in for some rough times following the EMP. This first novel in the series shows just how horrible conditions can deteriorate and how fast. Hopefully this Crew will make it to the future. A very good novel.
Compelling beginning to a tale of apocalypse in USA. Rick is in the middle east in the army. Lauren is working a corporate job in the US but several states away from their 2 children. Children are staying with Lauren’s parents until Lauren gets back from her job. Massive solar storm hits earth and life as usual ends. Nothing and nowhere is safe any more. Rick and Lauren struggle against horrible odds to get back to their children.
Loved the premise, a solar EMP -not an atomic war. Keep in mind how the sun controls our climate - NOT CO2. A military family are the central characters, he's in Afgan, she retired to take care of the family in SC. Grammy is taking care of the kids while Mom is off on a Business trip to NYC when the solar flare hits. Each family member has it's hardships in returning home. It's the first book in a series of after-the-apocalypse. An easy read, Well-written with few typos.
With a massive solar flare creating a worldwide EMP , Rick had to get back to the US to his family. His wife wasn't home at the time either, leaving their children with her parents before she left, neither had any idea what was going to happen. Challenges left and right. Good thing she had been in the military and he still was. Well written tale
Really a good read! Take a family, spread them across the globe and then bring them back together. That is what you are dealing with this, the first of the series. Can't wait to get into book two and see what we can do now we are all together.
I love this genre of books, and read through them even when they are filled with a lot of errors, but by and large, this was well written, engaging and character developing without focusing on graphic violence. Funny, though, how no one ever seems to have pets, lol. Will be very ready for book 2!
Fast-moving riveting tale about what society would look like after an EMP pulse from the Sun. I thought it very realistic and unsettling. Very well-written and engaging. Part of a series of books. After reading this one, I am very interested in seeing what happens next. Characterization I thought was good and I was felt close to the main characters. Highly-recommended!
A great story about the Nolan family who struggle to get back together after a huge solar storm causes a massive meltdown of everything electronic. The family is apart when the solar storm hits, the children separated by hundreds of miles from the mother, and the father overseas. A riveting plot with great characters and lots of action. This story is just the beginning.
My 1st book in this category, and read it right through the night! Simply had to find out how it ended! I was sooooo tempted to check out the end because I was so very concerned about all the main characters' survival. Good read. I recommend it highly. I will definitely read book 2 when I have funds! Aloha 💖🐱🐾
Imagine if you will a future just around the corner. Now, add in an assortment of characters to populate that future. Mr. Lopez provided a rich character development process in this the first novel to make you the reader invested in reading until you have reached the conclusion.
This is a really good read, it touches on human nature that none of us could understand, survival. Great story that's easy to follow and the actors are great. So sad in places but its closer to the truth then people would except. I'm looking forward to the second book.
Just an FYI to the author ... biscuits is something we eat with gravy in the states and I have a cell, not a mobile phone, no sticking plaster - just band-aids, a lift is what some gives you to work not how you move between floors in a motel
I like end times stories and solar storm did not disappoint I would recommend it to anyone who likes reading end times books very entertaining keeps you on the e edge
Of your seat would be a good movie or short series for tv maybe with great actors who would like sifi
Looking around Amazon for a fresh, new book and fell upon this. What a delightful surprise. Absolutely loved it. Yeah, as with apocalypse books it seems far fetch but this one was fun.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book plot it was hard to put down. Interesting twists and turns. It played out a little like the resurrection with the planes, trains, busses etc unable to safely stop or land.
The characters are rich and really come alive as they struggle to survive the effects of the solar storm. People are already falling into their base nature impeding safe passage. I'm so happy there is already another book out.
Don’t waste your time on this book because the language is terrible. The language is crude and blasphemous. The author should be ashamed of himself for using such language unnecessarily.
