An assassin at a renaissance faire. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, if you’re the Spider . . .

I might be Gin Blanco, aka the assassin the Spider, but even I need a break from the bad guys every now and then. So when Owen Grayson, my significant other, suggests a trip to the Winter’s Web Renaissance Faire, it sounds like a perfect distraction from all my problems.

The faire starts off innocently enough, but something seems slightly off about the cheery atmosphere and costumed characters. Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I can’t help but feel like I’m trapped in someone else’s icy web—and that they don’t want me to leave the faire alive . . .

Winter’s Web is a 27,000-word novella that takes place after the events of Venom in the Veins, book 17 in the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. Winter’s Web first appeared in the Seasons of Sorcery anthology in 2018.

Our beloved assassin at a renaissance faire. What could possibly go wrong? Well this story is basically like most of the stories in this series except the crooks seem to be a bit more stupid and a little nutso but that won’t save them when they try to hurt Owen, Gin becomes angry when that happens and the bad guys really won’t like her when she gets angry. If you love the series (I do) you will love this story (I did) and since I did and since she packed this story into only about 80 pages this is 5 stars

WINTER'S WEB BY JENNIFER ESTEP
An assassin at a renaissance faire. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, if you’re Gin Blanco. This Spider is trapped in someone else’s icy web—and it seems like they don’t want her to leave the faire alive . . .

•••••••••••••••

NOTE: WINTER'S WEB can be found in the anthology SEASONS OF SORCERY.

REVIEW: WINTER’S WEB by Jennifer Estep is instalment 17.5 in the author’s contemporary, adult ELEMENTAL ASSASSIN paranormal/ urban fantasy series focusing on Gin Blanco aka The Spider aka The Assassin –the reigning Queen of the paranormal Underworld of Ashland. WINTER’S WEB can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Winter’s Web takes place after Venom in the Vein.

Told from first person point of view (Gin Blanco) WINTER’S WEB follows Gin and the gang as they are ‘coerced’ into participating at Ashland’s annual Winter’s Web Renaissance Faire. Surprising himself and everyone he loved, Gin’s lover Owen Grayson won tickets to the local fair but things don’t go according to plans when Gin finds herself stalked by a group of giants, and the man that she loves, goes missing. As Gin battles to save her life, Owen faces a familiar face in a battle between money, his life, and power.

WINTER’S WEB is a quick read; a fast paced, action packed story of power and greed, elemental magic, and love. A heart pounding tale with familiar faces, energetic fight scenes, and a captivating couple WINTER’S WEB is the perfect addition to Estep’s Elemental Assassin series.

A short story, 17.5, in the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series and revolving around Gin Blanco, a barbecue chef, an assassin, and queen of the Ashland, North Carolina, underworld. If you're interested, there is a chronological listing of the Elemental Assassin books on my website.

"Winter's Web" also appears in Amanda Bouchet's Seasons of Sorcery anthology.

My Take
It's all from Gin's perspective as Estep uses first person protagonist point-of-view, as Gin scrambles to figure out what that itch signifies.

Now, I always enjoy finding out what Gin is up to — she's dangerous, she's kind, and she cooks a mean barbecue — and she's too cocky this time. Characters are more interesting when they're rounded, and that includes having a weakness...god knows, it's good to find out that Gin is not superwoman, that she's willing to assess her weaknesses and make changes.

And Gin does need help desperately...and Estep lets her off easy. And lets us down with that dorky Celeste. So what if the pirate queen is a character at the faire. It doesn't mean she has to be this lame!

I suppose it might have been necessary (in Estep's mind) to keep this short, but a few more pages wouldn't have hurt to develop Celeste's animosity a bit better.

And Estep could have wound things up with that dinner she makes Owen at the end. I do love the descriptions of Gin's food. I'm always hungry when I read this series! It would have been much better than that gratuitous sex scene at the end. Talk about a throwaway...

The Story
Costumes!? How ever did Gin get talked into donning a costume for the Ren Faire? And Finn wants to know how they got talked into volunteering!

The Faire starts off innocently enough, but something seems slightly off about the cheery atmosphere and costumed characters. Maybe Gin's being paranoid, but she can’t help but feel like she's trapped in someone else’s icy web — and that they don’t want her to leave the Faire alive . . .

The Characters
Gin Blanco's powers include Ice and Stone, which she uses in her night job as an assassin, the Spider, and unexpected head of the underworld. By day she runs the Pork Pit, Ashland's premier barbecue palace. Finnegan Lane is her too-smooth foster brother who is dating Gin's sister, Detective Bria Coolidge. Fletcher Lane was Finn's dad and had been Gin's mentor in the assassin game.

Owen Grayson, a wealthy businessman whose elemental power is Metal, is her significant other; Eva is Owen's younger sister.

Jolene "Jo-Jo" Deveraux is a dwarf who uses her Air power in her beauty salon. Rosco is her basset hound. Sophia Deveraux is Jo-Jo's sister who prefers the gothic side of fashion. She works for Gin at the Pork Pit, and after hours, she uses her Air power to help Gin get rid of bodies. Detective Xavier is Bria's partner with the Ashland PD. Silvio Sanchez, a vampire, is Gin's personal assistant. Stuart Mosley is a a dwarf and the owner of First Trust Bank which employs Finn.

The Winter’s Web Renaissance Faire is...
...a biannual event sponsored by the Ashland Renaissance Players. Darrell Kline is one of the players as well as an accountant at Owen's company. Princess Penelope is one of the Faire's characters, as is Pirate Queen Celeste who is amazing with her twin swords. Arthur, Lancelot, and Galahad are some of the giants costumed as Celeste's bodyguards.

The Circle is...
...a secret society responsible for much of the crime and corruption in Ashland. Its leader is Uncle Mason Snow. Hugh Tucker is Gin's personal nemesis and the Circle's vampire enforcer.

The Black Rook is a new enemy of Gin's while Jonah McAllister is an old enemy.

Eira Snow (Gin's mother) and Annabella (Gin's sister) were murdered. Their father, Tristan, had died young.

The Cover and Title
The cover is chilly in its blues, white, and lilac. A close-up of the beautiful hilt of a sword catches the attention, a spider web in white radiating outward from the hilt, as the wrought iron gates open behind it. The background is an elongated radial gradation of glowing white behind the sword's hilt out to deeper and deeper blues. The text is mostly in white from the info blurb at the very top with the author's name just below it. The title is below the sword's hilt with the first word in white and the second in a gradation from white into lilac. At the very bottom is the series information that also informs us that it's a novella.

The title refers to the trap lying within "Winter's Web".

I love Jennifer Estep. Have since the first time I picked up the first book in this series (which by the way was back before Kindle!). I have also never given her a 1-2 star review, and I won't do so now. I admire her abilities too much to ever do that.

However, and this is a big however, this book shouldn't have been written. It was unnecessary and felt as if she ran it off quickly just to get it out of the way. Which she should never need to do. I don't know what the hurry for a novella was, but next time she should just bow out. She shouldn't write just to write. She's much too fine an author to hurt herself like this.

All that being said, I do still love Gin and will most definitely continue reading everything Jennifer Estep comes out with in The Elemental Assassin series. Because even at her worst she still rates 3 stars. Not many authors have that claim to fame.

Maybe not your best, Jennifer, but that's ok. Everyone is allowed one boo boo. This one is yours. Now we can look forward to your next Elemental Assassin knowing it will be great!

Renaissance faire with a twist

A novella starring the incomparable Gin Blanco and her merry band of FInn, Bria, and Owen in costumes at a Renaissance festival. But nothing is carefree or innocent in Ashland as Gin soon finds out.

Princesses and pirates, swashbuckling and swords are all a lure for something more sinister.

A quick read with all the humor, kickass fighting, and dark fun this reader expects from the one of Jennifer Estep. She never disappoints, and she uses the Oxford comma, too!.

After all of these years, I still love the Elemental Assassin series. One of the things I enjoy is that Ms. Estep is astute enough to know that her fans need a little 'Gin' while waiting for the next installment in the series and that is why the novellas are so great. "Winter's Web" is a short but sweet read about the gang's experience at a biannual Renaissance Faire known as Winter's Web.

Owen Grayson won some tickets from his accountant, Darrell to the faire. He and the gang must dress up and Gin is having a melt down over the feathered monstrosity that Sophia picked out for her. She is a pirate queen assassin. Bria is equally mortified when she sees her hot pink princess outfit. The boys are having a blast laughing at them. There is another pirate queen at the faire, Celeste who is dazzling the crowds with her flamboyant knife wielding skills. She is accompanied by a security detail of giants who are a little too suspicious looking for Gin.

While Gin tries to ignore the increasing feeling that something is wrong, she realize she is being followed by two giants. After they attack her she has no choice but to take them out. However, prior to the fight she overheard them talking and she realizes that she is not the primary target of the attack but that Owen is. No one but no one messes with the main squeeze of the assassin and gets away with it as someone is about to discover.

As always this read is full of action, humor and passion. The series has evolved with time to be the story of Gin and Owen and that is what makes it so special. For far too long Gin was alone and now with Owen he is her perfect compliment. Without giving anything away, the last word in the read says it all, "Together."

Another visit to the mythical town of Ashland where at least half the population has antisocial personality disorder and most of them are a bit short on brains. This time our intrepid hero (or heroine if you want to be old-fashioned) takes on a collection of evil renaissance fair enthusiasts. As always, murder and mayhem ensue. Murder appears to be a misdemeanor and Ashland.

I’ve been following the adventures of Gin Blanco from the beginning but I kind of missed this one when it came out as well as the book that follows. Maybe I didn’t watch carefully enough for it. I’ve been wondering for some time now if perhaps this series shouldn’t have been wrapped up a while back. Gin was supposed to be this epic Elemental who is the most powerful in generations but she keeps running into others that appear to be more powerful than she is. How long can we keep this up while adding still more layers of secrets and conspiracies?

I’m going to read the next book, Sharpest Sting, and I will be rooting for this series to gain back some of the magic it had in the beginning for me.

Winter’s Web is a quick short story about Jenifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin, Gin. I have only read the first few books of the series but it was easy to pick up what was going on. Gin is still full of self-confidence and attitude and the boyfriend she picked up after cop, Donovan Caine, left town is still with her. They are going to a Renaissance Festival called Winter’s Web to try and forget their problems for a while. But, something about the way people keep staring at Gin has her somewhat paranoid sense of danger screaming that there is trouble at the Festival. When three giants try to follow her about, her feelings are confirmed, so she ambushes them and things quickly go to hell. It’s a diverting short story—perfect for both old fans and for anyone thinking about giving the series a try.

This was definitely one of the darker and sexier novellas in Gin Blanco's world, but it was also an Owen-centric story, which you'll never find me complaining about! The story starts of fun, but quickly turns bleak and dangerous, and brings out the true ruthlessness of its characters. And that includes the main characters (looking at you, Owen. I still love you, but... yikes).

Still, it's always great to see Gin Blanco and her friends beating up bad guys, and you better believe that nobody messes with Gin and Owen and get away unscathed. I can't wait to see more of them in the future!

You get what you came for, you're nice dose of Gin! The only problem I had was how easily I felt Gin and Owen should have taken down their enemies in this one. They came off as more of joke than an actual threat. Also, towards the end, Gin talks about she's so glad she and Owen survived and how they'll need eachother to survive in the future (or something along those lines). Why would she even doubt that she wouldn't survive that small little fight after all the shit she's been through and the bosses she's faced in the past and came out on top?

I loved this short, fast-paced, quick read. Gin and the gang volunteer to help out at the local Renaissance Faire, but with Gin being the Spider, she's paranoid that something is going to happen. And of course it does, only this time, the Spider is not the target, although the bad guys do need to make sure she is out of the way, so they can complete their plan. But as we all know, Gin doesn't take on her enemies if she doesn't think she can kill them, and kill them she will if it means saving the one she loves!

Gin and gang dress up to attend a local renaissance faire where for once Gin isn’t the target.

The Elemental Assassin stories are always good and even though this is short it doesn't disappoint.

Footnote: 1) I went to a renaissance faire with my family once. It was a lot of fun until I got lost in the crowds. Lol.

2) Those twice-baked potatoes made me hungry. Yum!

Fave scenes: Bria: the Princess Penelope and the rickety old hayloft.

Winters web

Yet another wonderful book!! Any book Jennifer Estep writes is a book I want to read. Her books are always a fabulous story you want to curl up to on relaxing winters night. Every time I finish a book I am sad because I have to wait for another book to come out.

Good but not as good as the novels

I wish you'd continue the black Blade series. And I love the Elemental Assassin series but it seems to take longer and longer for new books to come out. Your stories are very creative and different from others out there. I enjoy them very much.

I adore this series (well, except for some of the repetitious wording for sounds and whatnot, hence knocked down to 4).

Fun little Ren Faire romp, but heaven forbid they actually just get a day of fun. For once though, it's not about someone targeting Gin.

Good short story where the gang goes to a Renaissance Faire and ends up in trouble like usual. It was nice to have some fun time with everyone before the killing started.

A very good read. Jennifer Estes had created a world were you are submerged in the in Gin Blanco’s life and you become one of her team. You will feel a kindred to Gin and her family and you will fight by her side, and watch her six through this book. Enjoyable and fun.
