Ghost Walk

Ghost Ship: A Ghost Walk Novella

Rate this book
Almost a year after the events of Ghost Walk, autumn has descended on the beach-side city of Levien. It's almost Halloween, which means decorations are going up, the leaves are turning, children are dressing up in costume, and the city's ghosts are getting a kick out of everyone dressing up as the dead.

Maaya and Adelaide are busy preparing for a special Halloween trip out at sea, but before they can get too far, two strangers arrive at their door claiming they have a job that only the girls can do. The strangers explain there have been stories of a shipwreck far out at sea around which sailors report hearing strange noises and voices. Some even say their ships have been damaged, pointing to what look like long claw marks on their ships' hulls.

With this new danger threatening sailors in the world they just saved, Maaya and Adelaide take the LSV Windfire — along with some new guests — to investigate. As they do, they begin to realize the situation they're in seems awfully and frighteningly familiar.

My Ghost Walk rating:
Ghost Walk : 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This story, these characters, this pairing gets me in the c h e s t.

Ghost Ship was so atmospheric and had the most spooky Halloween mood throughout! I wrote a whole gushy review of Ghost Walk so anyone would know that I love Maaya so much because of how well written she is. Kay really took care of her development and her character so much so that she's one of my favorite protagonists ever written. I get so teary thinking about it, really, since I understand Maaya and want the best for her. Not only that, but her and Adelaide are everything to me. It was great to come back to them and the rest of the crew. They own my heart.

This was a fun little addition to the main story and it was nice to see a return to the characters I got so familiar with. It was also a clever tie in to one of the stories only briefly mentioned in Ghost Walk, so to see that little story expanded into a whole novella was great - especially when this story had shorter stories of its own within. The mood was excellent, and just like before, the writing was good at not letting me know what I should believe. The misleading mystery and confusion were all well done. Finally, the characters themselves, as always, are excellently written. That's probably my favorite part of any book I read by this author: the characters are always unique and deep and creative and it's clear a lot of thought and love goes into their creation.

I'm so glad this is a series now because I can't get enough of these girls and this world. Maaya and Adelaide are one of my favorite ships ever and I love how well developed they are. This is also just a good spooky story for Halloween. The only downside is Ghost Walk was so long I felt like I finished this way too fast lol.

This was such a charming little Halloween-themed novella, bringing back our favorite familiar faces alongside some intriguing new ones. Kay Solo really knows how to set the perfect spooky-yet-cozy vibe—this would have been perfect to read in October.

There was one thing that felt a bit off for me, though. But honestly, it was easy to overlook with everything else going on. The introduction of new characters (one of whom seems to have an entire side novel dedicated to her—very cool) kept things fresh and exciting. Plus, the lingering mystery that wasn’t fully resolved? My guess is it’s setting up something juicy for the next book.

I can’t wait to dive into the third installment, Moon & Flame! Kay Solo never disappoints when it comes to atmosphere and making you feel right at home in her world.
