When a woman who has always done what she was told decides to take matters into her own hands—she just might discover her future waiting...
Grace Hill has spent most of her life caring for others. When her beloved little sister is in trouble, Grace defies those who tell her she can’t, and rushes to her aid. Joining the other widows in Wildcat Ridge struggling to survive, she discovers the woman she is—a woman strong enough for a man like Benjamin Sloane.
Benjamin Sloane rides shotgun on the Wells Fargo stagecoach line through the rugged Utah Territory. He’s big-hearted, tough and about as civilized as a grizzly bear. But something about a fancy lady from the big city makes him want to clean up his ways and give her his heart.

TAKING CHARGE OF HER LIFE

The series revolves around Wildcat Ridge, Utah, where the Gold King Mine was located. This is a historical western, multi-author series about the women left behind and what they must do to keep their homes, their late husband’s businesses, and survive. In March 1884, there was an explosion that altered the lives of those who did not perish in the disaster. One hundred and forty-three men, plus nineteen women and thirteen children, died that fateful day. Now, Mortimer Crane is making threats against those left behind because he owns the town.

“Mortimer Crane owns this town, whether we like it or not. If he chooses to tear down our buildings or move them to his new mine at Clear Creek, there is little we can do to stop him. Mortimer has given us three months to pay the rent and mortgage payments we owe him before he tears down the town. And he will not renew rental leases for any woman running a business in her dead husband’s absence unless she has a new husband managing the business.”

“We can’t avoid the obvious, ladies. We must remarry.”

What a shock when the news arrives in Denver, Colorado, about the explosions and collapse of the Gold King Mine in Wildcat Ridge, Utah Territory. Widow Grace Hill is now very concerned for her sister, Ellie, and niece Tessa. She hasn’t heard from Ellie, and can’t just sit in Denver waiting. But leaving her controlling mother-in-law isn’t going to be easy, either. She will have to sneak around, make arrangements, get her trunk to the train depot, and depart secretly.

The story’s plot will have her discovering that the train doesn’t go all the way to Wildcat Ridge, and she will take a stagecoach on the final leg of the journey. The shotgun rider for the trip is a man named Benjamin Sloane, who mocks her, seeing her only as a city princess. Her concern isn’t Mr. Sloane; it is her family.

Grace will learn quickly that the situation in Wildcat Ridge is by far more devastating than she anticipated. It comes with mixed emotions to find that Ellie and Tessa are alive, but fragile, and that her brother-in-law perished. Their home has been damaged, and Ellie and Tessa are living and working in Crane’s motel—by force. Just when Grace thinks she has found something productive to do, running Wells Fargo, Ben Sloane discovers that GEO Hill is, in fact, Grace. He feels he must inform those at Wells Fargo, who would rather let her go, because she is a woman, than allow her to do the job she is handling. Her next option would be to become the new school teacher. While Ben has been wanting his own Wells Fargo office, being told he will take over the Wildcat Ridge location and give up his shotgun position wasn’t what he had in mind.

There is plenty of angst and animosity between Ben and Grace, but secretly, there is admiration too. Along the way, they begin a friendship—but what about a future? Everyone around Grace and Ben can see they have feelings for each other—when will they acknowledge it to themselves? The story does have the good, the bad, and the ugly of people—but in the end, several more women in Wildcat Ridge will find a husband.

Loved the book, HATE the lack of continuity with previous books in the series. Just to name a few... 1: Grace did not meet Buster until after the 4th of July because she arrived on the stage that Reed was supposed to leave on. 2: Buster did not ride one of the auction horses bareback while standing until the day after they drove them into town. Back to 1, Buster could not have asked Grace if she saw it because Grace was not in town yet (for those who read in chronological order). 3: Reed had proposed to Elli the day that Grace’s stagecoach got to town. 4: Grace could not have helped Elli with the scavenger hunt, you guessed it, see #1.

Authors, PLEASE, it is hard enough to keep things straight when you have 10 books that are running congruently. I know it is a pain but either in writing or editing, catch the mistakes.

I did love the story though.

Benjamin and Grace

Grace ran away from her deceased husbands family home to her sister in Wildcat Ridge. She gets a job with Wells Fargo only they don't realize she is a woman. When the stage next comes through and the Fargo representative bbq realizes she is not a male she is replaced by him, Benjamin. She finds a job as school teacher since she is now unemployed again. Lots of ups and downs but will they find the love they both desire? This is a very good story and you will enjoy it.

Another great book in a great series

Enjoyable characters and an enjoyable storyline. Grace finds herself by finding the courage to go to Wildcat Ridge to check on the well being of her sister Eleanora and niece Tessa. Characters from earlier books in the series are weaved nicely through the storyline, it this story could stand alone too.

A good historical fiction romance

Grace was a widow but not one of the original Widows of Wildcat Ridge. She came to Wildcat Ridge to check on her sister who was a Wildcat Ridge widow and her story was in a previous book. Overall a good historical sweet romance. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Unfortunately, the timing around Grace's arrival at Wildcat Ridge and Reed Shannon returning to Eleanora is all off. It's probable the two authors were writing their books at the same time but considering the very precise link between the two, there should have been more collaboration on that part. However, it doesn't take away from the story.

Enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this Wildcat Ridge book. Grace was a character who was easy to relate to. She'd had a challenging life and it was fun to watch her change and grow through the book.

Stagecoach Away

A story of stagecoach and the people who work with them. It's about those who would steal and kill from them. Mixed in a little love between those who live and work in wildcat.

Grace is special

Mortimer Crane gets weaker with less influence each book, happily. Grace is a very talented young woman. But the Wells Fargo bank kind of dropped out of sight.

Sweet Historical Romance

I love this series! It seems like this one went back in time a bit, as the hot springs weren't opened yet. But, it was a wonderful story!
