This suspense began with a shocking narrative that disturbed me enough that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue. Deciding it might better suit the daytime, I picked it up again only to find a total shift in mood and point of view.
I bought this book at a Writer’s Conference along with another by the author herself. I found the editing improved upon the first (Ten Days in Summer).
The premise of a cult intrigued me and this book did not disappoint.
A troubled woman, Julie, goes to California in search of her mother who abandoned her at the age of four. Her stepsister, who is suffering from depression, accompanies her.
Calder switched the POV several times even within a chapter but it worked in creating an unsettling, “what is going on here” tone.
However, I did not care for the many sexual encounters which led to many skipped paragraphs. Yes, it showed the corruption of certain characters but...well, this is why I tend to stay away from newer novels. There is something to be said for subtleties.
But I am impressed with Calder’s growth as a writer, notably her ability to switch between the mindsets of her characters. It would be hard not to follow her progression.

I have read all of Susan's books, and this one is a bit different in that it is not a murder mystery, but more a thriller. There is a background murder at the very beginning, that sets the mood, but it is not related directly to the main character Julie Fox in the story. It is mostly a quest where Julie tries to find her long-lost mother and ends up in Southern California at a cult-like place and we wonder if she will break or get healed. The story moves along quickly as we follow the characters in Julie's quest. Definitely a must-read.

Reviewed by Janet Walters, posted by author. A short step between sanity and madness. The heroine sufers a breakdown and wants to find why. In the telling she is lured into a cult-like situation. Can she learn the things she needs or will she end up completely broken. An intense story with psychological twists
