The Vanishing

Rate this book
What happens when the hero who saved Wonderland from the destruction of the famed Jabberwock needs to find a worthy paramour before the Red Queen picks one for him? Devrel, the last of the Cheshire cats, has the perfect solution. He’ll just pluck one from the human world and gift her to him for his un-birthday.

Realizing her friends were playing a joke on her, Cadence is heading home when she sees the cat smiling at her. Next thing she knows, she’s in Wonderland and in the arms of a handsome man who thinks she’s slightly unhinged upon meeting her. Intrigued by Gareth, Cadence makes an offer to act as his companion in exchange for his protection as they journey from the Tulgey Wood to the Red Kingdom—a simple solution which endangers both of their hearts as the castle looms in the distance.

The Vanishing is a darling tale full of wonderful imagery and great reference to its mother tale, Alice in wonderland. Rebekah Lewis does a wonderful job of intermingling the real world with fantasy. Cadence, the heroine, is a snarky college student, whose drunken night out leads her to be whisked away by Devrel, the last remaining Cheshire Cat. Devrel is best friends with Gareth, the hero, who is a fantastical cross between a medieval knight and pirate! (in my opinion) He is charming and funny, but most importantly, confident and sexy. Overall, this story contains a great mix of romance, comedy, and mystery as Cadence tries to decide whether her fate belongs in Wonderland with Gareth at her side, or the real world. A definite 5 STARS! Keep it up Rebekah Lewis!
P.S. Devrel is the best sidekick I've ever come across! Love that cat!

I'm never going to look at any cat in the same way. Or take a dare from my 'friends'. Suspense filled and also dotted with amazingly vivid images, this is a story to curl up with under bright lights and with a blanket to pull over your head.

A cute and unique Wonderland themed story left me wanting to throw the kindle at Rebekah... in a good way... The ending came too soon, though it is perfect for the book, but left me wanting more.

(Very short story)

During a bar night with her friends, Cadence was talked into doing a snipe hunt. During her drunken wandering through the nearby woods, she finds a cat with an oddly large grin. He deposits her at the feet of a handsome man dressed in odd, outdated buckled boots. He claims she’s in Wonderland and that he is Gareth, the slayer of the Jabberwocky and she has two days to decide if she wants to stay. Of course not, but Gareth really shouldn’t have to be tied to a lady of the red queen’s court and be forced to give up adventuring. And Cadence would quite like to have more adventure in her life.

Oh ugh. That was a horrible cliffhanger to leave us on. Thankfully I already have the next book in the series. I picked it up originally because I like the author and I can’t resist anything set in Wonderland. And I did love that the author tried to add as many names and creatures from Lewis Carrol’s Wonderland as possible without feeling the need to update into modern realism. She just let Wonderland be as crazy and exotic as the original Lewis Carrol story. So I thrilled at every mention of Jubjub birds and mome raths and bandersnatchs and, of course, the infamous Hatter and ever-present tea time. Though Cadence is Mary-Sue everyday person bland and author insert, I still loved the romance with Gareth. I also loved all of the crazy touches, like Hatter’s measuring. I am quite looking forward to the next book, since it’ll be a much longer foray int the author’s envisioning of Wonderland.

Wish it had been longer but it was wonderful and the humor in it kept me smiling, the witty banter was great!

This was my first read by miss Lewis and I was extremely satisfied and looking forward to reading her other work.

This book, Well it was very interesting in a good way. A unique Retelling of my favorite fairytale Alice In Wonderland! I was taken in immediately because of that detail. Heads up though, this is a cliffhanger and will definitely leave you wondering! Can't wait for book 2!!!! Will Cadence stay? Will she go? I don't think she even knows.

The characters were very unique and different in their own way, nothing like what I was expecting and I really enjoyed being led down a different path than what I'm use to.

I was drawn in to this story from the beginning! A good book draws you in and keeps you their, and this did just that, I did not put it down until I finished! I loved that it was a short story, but it kept me on my toes and I can not wait for more in this series.

Totally awesome

This was an amazing short story. I want to read it again already and I just finished it. Candace is taken to wonderland, and given two days for her heart to decide if she stays forever, or is retuned to her world. I loved this, and can't wait to read the next one.

3.5 stars!

Would have been a much better read if it was more in-depth and adventerous, instead of the insta-romance that seemed to overshadow everything.
