I knew there would be a variety of skills and approaches I could use on a daily basis after reading the first 5 pages of this book. Mike begins dissecting FEAR, which gives me worry palms sweating and all. When faced with dread, he says, we can either "forget everything and run" or "face everything and rise." Mike gives several examples of worries that we tend to worry about, and he says, "There is no such thing as stress management; there is just fear management," and he adds, "When you can learn to control your fears, you will have nothing to worry about." Mike then tells us how to kick fear in the buttocks by saying, "STOP." S.T. O. P. is an abbreviation for Stop, Take a Deep Breath, Observe, and Proceed. STOP is fantastic! When confronted with problems I don't know how to handle, I usually feel paralysed. I avoid unneeded panic by remembering the word STOP. Since learning this technique, it's become a habit, and whenever I'm confronted with a problem, I hear Mike's Australian voice in my brain say, "STOP," and I'm instantly reminded to Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, and Proceed. In any case, this is simply step one of seven. I refuse to detract from your reading experience any further. Mike recounts his life stories with honesty and how he overcame obstacles. I hear people talk about the value of developing resilience all the time, but it's unusual that I hear it explained in such a straightforward and useful way. Some of the reasons that prevent us from being indestructible are explained by Mike quite well. I was able to become aware of some of my negative ideas and behaviour patterns by delving into the delicate subjects of fear and overcoming the inner critic. The narrator explained this as though he were sitting across from you on the couch in your living room. It is easy to read and relevant. The anecdotes he shares about some notable individuals are motivating, but what I found more motivating were the writers' own personal experiences. Everyone should strive every day to have his or her talent and drive to overcome so many challenges and yet achieve while also assisting others. I particularly enjoyed how the author alternated between narrative and specific plans of action and transferrable action points I could use in my daily life; it kept me interested and motivated to read more.
