It was only a matter of time before my twin sister brought chaos into my quiet life. Mel’s messed with the wrong people. Now she’s in danger and needs my help. She’s the only family I have left and she knows I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure she stays safe. Unfortunately helping her means pretending to be her. And my sister just happens to be under contractual obligation to Griffin Mandeville. He’s one of Boston’s wealthiest bachelors and owner of The Patrician, an exclusive members-only gambling club. Griffin needs a wife—rich people and their ridiculous inheritance problems—and Mel was supposed to take those vows. Instead he’s got me.
So now not only am I deceiving everyone in his social circle into believing he and I are falling in love, I’m also deceiving him. He thinks he’s hired an experienced, mercenary woman who understands our arrangement is purely business. Except, I’m not my sister. I’m not at all what he expected and suddenly we’re both finding it hard to separate business from pleasure.
Griffin’s everything I shouldn’t want — selfish, brooding, arrogant and high-handed. Yet he’s also complex, intelligent, and the sexiest man I’ve ever met. He’s awoken desires I never knew existed within me. I’m drowning. I’m drowning in the lies. The lies I’m telling the world. The lies I’m telling Griffin. And the lies I’m telling myself. We’re deceiving ourselves if we think we can pretend we can control this passion for each other. A passion that will turn to dust if Griffin ever learns who I truly am.
The Deception Trilogy Complete Boxset includes all three books in Griffin and Scarlett’s epic story of a love that can conquer all.
I write sizzling romance about strong heroines and brooding heroes. I like my protagonists flawed but loveable, my romance angsty and hot, and my plotlines just that little bit fantastical. My debut romance trilogy The Deception Trilogy is now available on Kindle.
I was going through the books on my Kindle account when I found this boxset - I bought it about a year ago. I’m not sure what made me buy it, but I read it out of curiosity. I’m going to review all 3 books included as if they’re one long book because, to be honest, I think it read like that very well. I didn’t really notice I was reading 3 books.
I can’t really put my finger on what, exactly, it was I enjoyed about reading these books, but overall, I did quite like them. For the most part, the story is fast-paced and full of angst and emotions and so on. I quite liked the heroine, Scarlett. She was really put through the ringer in the book and I liked the way she handled and reacted to everything; it’s no surprise that she got tougher and harder as the trilogy went on. I was glad she put Griff through weeks of grovelling before giving in in the third book because his behaviour was truly awful (conversely, I liked that they reconciled quite quickly at the start of the second, as I thought it would have dragged a lot otherwise.)
I found myself liking Griff despite myself. God, he was annoying, but I couldn’t help but like him. I thought they had decent chemistry and I thought the author portrayed his feelings for her very well. I liked a lot of the secondary characters as well, particularly Xavier and Amelia.
It was quite an escapist novel, in its own way - not in a fun, light kind of way, but it was pure fantasy in a lot of ways despite its contemporary setting, and I couldn’t help but get sucked into it. I read it in less than 24 hours, so the author must have been doing something right to capture my attention like that. I actually think it read a lot like a historical romance set in the modern day, and I did wonder as I read it whether that was the inspiration - the hero being the son of an earl, for an example, and members of British aristocracy pop up every now and then. Thinking of it in that light, I am more sympathetic to the plotting and so on. I really had to read this book through different eyes than normal - I had to let a lot of my misgivings go.
The books have a lot of flaws. The plot is very flimsy and doesn’t stand up to much scrutiny (and for that matter, I’m not sure that the inheritance clause causing their marriage of convenience would have in a court of law, either). But it does work as a skeleton to build the story on.
Griff does and says things that aren’t very pleasant throughout much of the story. I can handle protective/possessive heroes, but sometimes, it seemed a bit much
The other problem I had with him is related to my main problem with the book as a whole - he is very, very slow to react or even take seriously Scarlett’s very well-grounded concerns about the behaviour of his employee, Pete. On a similar note, there’s a really heavy negative attitude towards sex work through much of the first two books, particularly from Griff, I think it was really unnecessary.
The main issue was the use of sexual harassment/assault in the books. I think the heroine is almost sexually assaulted in all three books in the trilogy. Again, I just didn’t think this was necessary. Scarlett was put through so much in these books that didn’t feel very necessary.
I also did not like the conclusion to the main secondary plotline involving Pete.
The pacing of the final book was also very off - Also, I think it just needed a good edit in general - the writing needed tightening up just a little, parts of it felt a little clumsy.
All that said - I couldn’t stop reading it, and I became very invested in their relationship. It just needed some work and some elements removing/rethinking, in my opinion, and I think it would have worked a lot better as a whole.
I would recommend it if you want an angsty, complicated fake romance / marriage of convenience romance - or if you normally like reading historical romance and want some of the same kinds of tropes in a modern setting.
Omg I was expecting for these books to be good but not that much. I feel it was brilliantly developed and everything had it's time. The only thing I would say is that the last book was not that interesting nor did it have that catchy sense to it, but the whole trilogy was genius. I love the female hero, so independent and strong. I don't know why she got so annoying in the third book although she managed to change her attitude and redeem. Definitely recommending these series!
I didn't expect to enjoy this box set has much has I did .tbf I thought oh it'll be one of those light books not much plot ,one you can pick up and put down .how wrong was I loved it writting and storyline was superbly done fell in love with both of them she wasn't wishy washy she was a strong woman the witty banter and nice mixture of personalities made an enjoyable read I'll definently be following fallon Hart for more of her books
