Evidence in the Echinacea

Riches to rags. ... Controlling to chaos. ... But murder ... well maybe …

Doreen’s success at solving murders has hit the newswires across the country, but all Doreen wants is to be left alone. She has antiques to get to the auction house and a relationship with Corporal Mack Moreau to work out, not to mention a new friendship to nurture with Penny, Doreen’s first friend in Kelowna, and Doreen doesn’t want to ruin things.

But when a surprise accusation won’t leave Doreen alone—about Penny’s late husband George’s death and made by one of the men Doreen helped put away—she thinks that maybe it can’t hurt to just take a quick look into her new friend’s past.

Before Doreen knows it, she’s juggling a cold case, a closed case, and a possible mercy killing … along with cultivating her relationships with Penny, Mack, and Doreen’s pets: Mugs, the basset hound; Goliath, the Maine coon cat, and Thaddeus, the far-too-talkative African gray parrot. And while Mack should be used to Doreen’s antics by now, when she dives into yet another of his cases it’s becoming increasingly hard to take ...

Another good addition to the series :). There’s just something about the death of Penny’s husband that Doreen can’t let go. She finds his journal in a work bench and it seems to hint at some nefarious deeds. Meanwhile, Doreen continues to explore her new home and finds even more treasures/antiques stored there by Nan, giving her quite a nest egg if the appraiser is in target. Between clearing the house, investigating what is turning into quite the mysterious cold case, Doreen has her hands full. Plus, how on earth is she to convince everyone that she and Mack are NOT headed into a relationship 😂😂😂😂

"Burgarler in the house. Burgarler in the house. - Thaddeus African grey bird

I never expected to enjoy this series so much. But I really do enjoy it. Cozy mystery indeed. And that is my jam!

Doreen and her animals a unique family. The animals protect her and she protects them. I love their dynamic so much. They all understand eachother. Which is so sweet. Her animals crack me up. They definitely keep her on her toes. It's so nice that she has such a loving little family now after all that she went through. Her Nan and animals will always love her and she will always love them.

Solving cases and learning how to cook with her buddy Mack and animals make my heart warm. Also Nan and her gambling on Doreen and Macks relationship and how doreen solves the cases.❤️ Cracks me up all around. Also when Doreen says that she doesn't mean to solve or investigate these mysterious/ cold cases. But she does mean too! She loves it!

Really like listening to this series on audiobook.

I have been admiring the Lovely Lethal Gardens series and the 5th installment doesn't disappoint. Doreen has made a friend with Penny and is bother with a stat made that Penny cause her husband's death. Doreen begins to look into all the death that has occurred around Penny. Doreen 's affair with corporal Mack Moreau continues with Mack teaching her cook and helping with antiques. We learned about the packaging of antiques. The antics of Doreen's friend s provides much to liven the series.
While the information on plants is not entirely accurate, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND of SERIES, for a relaxing read. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Evidence in the Echinacea

WOW! Another FANTASTIC story. This time Doreen was hoping her new friend wasn't involved in the cold case she got interested in. But alas, it wasn't to be. Doreen finds her friend's husband's journal in his work bench and starts to work on her theory. Meanwhile, Doreen continues to find a treasure trove in her grandmother's basement. Once Doreen solves the latest cold case, which basically solves a few more cold cases, Doreen's appraiser, Scott, comes back to appraise more of her furniture, Scott discovers jewelry hidden in them. Doreen says she will most likely keep the jewelry as it belonged to her great-great grandmother. I love how Dale let's us know the next cold case she will be involved in. FANTASTIC job Dale! I would highly recommend this book.

This book was a little different than previous books. I won't say why specifically because I don't want to spoil anything.

There was a ton of discussion about Nan and her antiques, and gardening. Of course, the book revisited Doreen's inability to cook.

What I thought was most interesting was that Doreen seemed to have no other experience or expertise than garden, but had no problem disassembling a workshop in a garage. She couldn't read the instructions on a package of pasta so she could eat, but she cleared that garage space like a champ, lol.

I felt like this book moved slower than previous books. There were a few interconnected cold cases. I would recommend that the book previous to this one be read first for a more complete understanding of the mystery and solution.

Divorcee Doreen and her animals (Mugs, the basset hound; Goliath, the Maine coon cat, and Thaddeus, the far-too-talkative African grey parrot) just want to be left alone for a while so she can concentrate on getting the valuable antiques in the house to the auction house, her developing friendships with Corporal Mack Moreau and Penny (her first female friend in the area). However, she finds herself unable to ignore an accusation about Penny’s late husband George’s death she decides it won't hurt to just look into it. Suddenly Doreen seems to be juggling a cold case, a closed case, and a possible mercy killing. Mack should be used to Doreen’s antics by now when she dives into yet another of his cases but it’s becoming increasingly hard to take.

Wow - Doreen sure likes to complicate her life. I don't know how she manages to do the gardening, the house clearance, the investigation of murders and keep her sanity - if it was me I think I would have been overloaded with work to do and things to learn. This superwoman does appear to have her priorities slightly wrong and really needs to now work on finding the important paperwork as well as resolve her own sleeping arrangements which seem bizarrely uncomfortable (for goodness sake woman buy a bed!). This book as once again educated me about some plants as well as a few gardening techniques. Well written and highly addictive I really enjoyed this book which had Doreen in the thick of the action again.

Great Series

This is almost like a continuation from the last book. The mystery in the last book was solved. But Doreen has some concern about an accusation of murder by the bad guy in the last book. Doreen's mind will not settle until she fully explores what was said. Now the mystery in this book was bizarre. Again, two cold cases were solved. And in the process Doreen's life was put in danger. Well, that's not the first time that has happened. But she was hurt badly enough to go to the ER. And on the personal front, I am as anxious as Doreen to get all those antiques off to the auction house. So much more to happen in this series. Doreen's soon to be ex, will he fleece her? Will Doreen's friendship with Mack go to the next level? How much money is she going to get from all those antiques? And is the consignment lady ripping Doreen off? Really, $145 for a real fur coat??? Lack of communication and accounting on the consignments. I am getting concerned. Doreen is too trusting. And she knows nothing about the real world basics, like cooking, banking, finance. All the things her husband took care of For her and refused to let her be involved with. Thankfully Mack is a really good friend and teaching her and looking out for her. As much as she lets him. Doreen is very independent now. Oh, and one more thing I love about this series. Doreen is a true pet lover. Treats her pets like her own children. I LOVE that!

I was kindly provided this book as an ARC; in exchange for my honest review. If you’re a loyal reader of this authors books; I feel I must warn you that this book (the fifth in her new series) is VERY different from anything else she’s written before.

Some may find it to be a little “young,” but as with most of Ms. Dale’s work, it is well written and a fast, easy read.

Doreen Montgomery moves to Kelowna (BC) to live in her Grandma Nan’s home after a nasty split from her husband of 14 years.

Her her first week in her new home she “discovered “ a few dead bodies (with the assistance of her new family; her Basset Hound Mugs, her Grandmas pets a cat named Goliath and a vocal African Grey Parrot named Thaddeus).

Doreen has somehow gotten involved in several murder cases in the time she’s lived in Kelowna, BC. Much mayhem and adventure ensues for Doreen, Mac, and Doreen’s pets.

This is an entertaining and somewhat silly story. I can’t say this is my favorite or Ms. Dale’s series; but, it is cute and of course well written. I’ve allowed a young teen to read, something I wouldn’t allow of her other book series.

I absolutely love this series. It's fun, adventurous and full of laughter and surprises.

Doreen made a friend in the last book, Penny. Unfortunately the bad guy from that one has cast suspicion onto her with an accusation that Doreen can't get out of her head. But with other things going on she hasn't spent too much time thinking about it.

One of my favorite things in these books is the relationship between her and Mack, the detective is handsome and honorable. He's helping Doreen in many ways but the best is teaching her to cook.

In spite of having the appraiser from Christie's preparing to transport some of the antiques in her home, she does find a way to start investigating Penny.

The clincher is finding a journal in Penny's garage as she helps make the front of Penny's house ready for the relator's pictures.

Lots of fun with Thaddeus, the parrot, he starts calling her by name in this one! Mugs and Goliath are hoot as well. Her grandmother Nan also manages to be a bit of trouble too as the folks in the home start betting on Doreen and Mack having a relationship.

Plenty of suspense, laughs and so much more. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

Evidence in the Echinacea is a delectable book, that intrigues and entertains the reader at all times.
The character of Doreen, the protagonist, continues to evolve, featuring a stronger, wittier and more self-assured persona. Doreen is very resourceful; a quick learner, she is curious and enthusiastic in becoming proficient in all activities that capture her interest. Without evening realizing it, she also proves to have a good business sense.
While she is busy working as a gardener and at selling her Nan’s antiques, she stumbles onto another cold case, whose solution looks, in the beginning, pretty straightforward. During the course of the story, however, new facts lead to a completely unexpected outcome.
In the meanwhile, Doreen’s witty banter with Corporal Mack Moreau is a continuous source of entertainment. As usual, her pets play an important role in the story, while the colorful and rackety population of her little town creates a lively background to the narration.

This book follows where the previous book left off and is just as fun. Love the way the characters, Doreen and Mack interact with each other and how they both work on solving cold cases (crimes) in their town together. I absolutely love how three of the main characters are animals. You have Mugs, the Basset who Doreen brought with her when she moved into her Grandmother's home. There is also a Maine Coon with the name of Goliath and an absolutely hilarious parrot by the name of Thaddeus. Both Goliath and Thaddeus were her Grandmother's pets until her Grandmother moved into a retirement home. These animals are so much part of the book that I don't think the story would be the same without them. This book had another mystery that Doreen ends up working on with the help of Mack. Loved the way the story continued from the previous book and ends with you impatiently wanting to read the next book in the series. Love these "hard to put down" books and can't wait for the next one!

This is another book in the Lovely Lethal Gardens series. I missed reading the previous book, so there was some information based on the previous book that I didn’t follow. I don’t think that information was necessary to enjoy this book. I didn’t know why she was troubled that her new friend Penny may have killed her husband. That being said, it didn’t take away from the story. Doreen tried to put the thoughts out of her head, but if there’s a puzzle or cold case to solve she can’t stop until she knows what happened. Doreen continues to work as a gardener, the dog, cat and parrot continue to provide humor and Nan continues to stir up trouble. Between getting the antiques moved to the auction house and finding more antiques, Doreen is able to close multiple cold cases. The relationship between Mack and Doreen continues to grow, although Doreen won’t admit to it. I continue to enjoy the series and I am looking forward to the next 21 books in the series (assuming Dale continues the trend of writing a book for every letter of the alphabet).

For heaven's sake. Doreen again is the stupidest adult person. She's had artichoke hearts before, requested them. Then doesn't recognize them because they are cut differently. She describes what she's seen as looking like pinecones. Mack tells her these are the same things, but the centers called artichoke hearts. Seriously, she asks, "Why do pinecones have hearts?". No connection to reality, or to the conversation. Then she's upset because Mack laughs. In the same chapter she had asked for feta cheese, but didn't think it was the same thing because it was in a block. She had only seen it in cubes. Then Mack slices a piece and cuts it into cubes. It doesn't end there. She states something like "Is that all it is?, Our (personal) Chef was overpaid!"

She pouts. Is that supposed to be cute? She watched Mack make spaghetti to go with his sauce. She filmed it. She has leftover sauce, goes hungry because she didn't know how to cook the spaghetti. Can she not read directions on the package?

I read the books because they are short and I like the antique furniture parts.

This is the fifth in the Lovely Lethal Garden mystery series. I listened to the book via Chirp. I like this series.

The movers arrive on Monday to pickup the bedroom set. They also take a rug, and a few other items. They’ll be back because Mack & Doreen find the highboy (part of the bedroom set) in the basement / root cellar, which until this book was unknown to either of them.

Hornsby has accused Penny of killing George, her husband. There’s no proof but Doreen wonders and Nan just fuels the gossip. This sits heavy with Doreen. She is adding curb appeal to Penny’s house for a small fee. They have decided on a memorial to George, Johnny, and herself since she is selling her home.

Doreen finds George’s journal among the garage items that Penny has offered Doreen. It doesn’t come out and state he killed anyone but it is sketchy. The book is filled with many twists and turns.

When approximately five cold cases are solved by the end of the book, I beginning to believe Doreen has a knack for solving them. It helps that Mack has her back.

Her instincts lead her to solve crimes.
I loved this story! I listened to the story on CHIRP while driving, and it made the trip so entertaining. LOTS OF LAUGHS! This story snowballs from one murder connected to a cold case, then wham, another murder, and then another! Doreen may be unable to cook, but she can pick up clues that others miss. Putting all the pieces together is her superpower. Lots of people love her, but because of her tenacity and notoriety, some hate her as well. Doreen has lots of help too. Along with her hysterically funny mix of dog Mugs, cat Goliath, and parrot Thaddeus, are also Grandma Nan and Nan’s friends at the senior living apartments. Corporal Mack Moreau does his best to keep Doreen out of his active cases, but she keeps him busy cleaning up cold cases. Mack has fallen for the sweet, loony, helpless beauty. This incredible story is also filled with prep for her garden and helping others with their garden. Lots of plant talk. I love this series! Linda

I like the fact that each book provides me information about plants and gardens, things that I didn't realize piqued my interest and I can go to the library and learn about. Doreen is helping me with my garden and she doesn't even realize! I am grateful that she finally has the garage cleaned out and most of the house, it's like opening the door to other possibilities now. Now get your tush in gear and get your bedroom taken care of and for gosh sake find the papers, I think priorities are a little out of whack. Mack seems to be growing as well, becoming more accepting. I love watching Doreen develop and I am curious as to what she will do in the future....police? P.I.? Possibilities. Muggs, Goliath and Thaddeus are all here sharing in the opportunities and excitement. I really like that fact this is book you can read with young adults, teenagers and share together. Thank you Dale Mayer, Book Sprout for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own and were unsolicited.

Suspenseful and intense at times, full of twists and surprises to keep you focussed on the pages. I am loving this series with its quirks and funny moments as well as the serious side of murder, death and missing people. Doreen and her animals are fabulous characters, Nan is a hoot and Mack is the steady calming influence to keep everything levelled out. I love the mix of light and dark of the plots, the use of various plants as hiding places as well as garden enhancements. This series and each book are so different from anything else Dale Mayer has written but at the same time still has all the elements of style that are used in her other books, just a different focus and theme. I don't want this to ever end, I want to see these characters have a family and grow old. Amazingly entertaining and very interesting.

Doreen is solving cold cases quicker than she can turn around in Kelowna and she has earned quite the reputation. Her ragtag group of animals are also becoming well known around town. Nan is always hoot with her gambling, mischief making and keeping secrets. I love the developing relationship between Doreen and Mack. Mack seems to be more involved in he relationship part than Doreen though as he keeps finding reasons to stop by and seems to be enjoying her help more and more on his cases as he begins to share more and more on cases. Doreen keeps stumbling into the cold cases and actually ends up solving several in this book. I truly love the hi-jinks in each book as well as the relationship building that Doreen goes through not only with Mack, but with everyone she knows and is getting to know. The series is well written and truly addicting. I volunteered to read this through Booksprout.

Doreen doesn't want to suspect that Penny, her neighbor and friend, murdered her husband. Doreen's curiosity grows, but she is too busy to delve too much into the mystery. Doreen is trying to sell the valuable antiques that her grandmother stuffed into every corner of her inherited home, basement, and garage. Mack is very willing to help Doreen, but Doreen isn't ready to say they have a relationship. I received a free copy of this book from the author through Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. The book was an enjoyable read, but not as good as the previous ones in the series. I did enjoy Doreen's work in Penny's garden. It inspired me to work more on my own. I also liked the growing friendship between Mack and Doreen. The mystery is more of a side story in this book but there is a suspenseful end when Doreen brings all the pieces together. I liked this book and recommend the series.

In this the fifth book in the Lovely Lethal Gardens Series, E also stands for engagement. In the first four books, we knew from the first chapter what was found and where. We would then join Doreen on the merry chase for information as she, Goliath, Mugs, Thaddeus, and of course, Mack and Nan set about to solve the who and why. As I read Evidence in the Echinacea, I kept wondering, “What evidence? Where is it?” Then I realized that NOT knowing what the evidence is and which of many gardens Doreen is rejuvenating would be the one where the echinacea are currently hiding said evidence also hid a plot twist that I did not see coming at all. AND the anticipation kept me totally engaged right to the final reveal of the who and the why. Now I know how Mack feels.

Evidence in the Echinacea by Dale Mayer
Lovely Lethal Gardens Series Book Five
Doreen isn't even looking for evidence or murderers or anything. She's just trying to get settled into her new home. A home her grandmother has left her and has left it full of expensive antiques for Doreen to sell so she has money to live.

Thank goodness for Mack, the handsome detective, who's been helping her out. That man can make a meal to die for. Something that Doreen had never learned to do in her pampered life...cook.

Another great addition to this series. Between Doreen's nudges to “dig” deeper into things, her Nan sitting at the retirement home betting on things; such as Doreen's non-existent love life, and her small menagerie of critters...it makes these stories real page-turners. Not a dull moment in them.

And the adventure of Doreen and her loyal quirky furry friends solving cold cases continue!!!
Another story that I can't put it down from the beginning, I get a glimpse of this book in the previous book, so I was excited starting this one.
Love the mystery but not as much as I expected it would be, in this book is more about Doreen, not complaining though, because I love how she's growing to become this wonderful character, she might be clueless but she has a big heart and her curiousness and smartness got me adore her more with each book in this series. Oh and I love those sweet moments between Doreen and Mack, gah I wished they just get together already, they're so sweet together. So yeah overall I love this book...a lot.

If you love cozy mystery read, I think you'll love this one too.

The Saga continues!

I cannot get enough of these books. Yes I have an addiction to this series. The antics of her pets and partners in crime, Mugs, her basset hound, and the other 2 whom she inherited from her Nan. Thaddeus, her talking parrot and of course Goliath, the main coon cat. After solving the last murder mystery Doreen had suspicions that the nice lady Peggy who hired her might have murdered her late husband. Nana has a betting pool going on at the nursing home. Doreen has been getting all the antiques appraised. She has had intruders break in a couple of times, which Mack has been helping her with while teaching her how to cook. There are so many things going on at once, it can leave you breathless. But the fun, entertaining kind.

I finally feel like I've found a suitable mood or vibe for this series.. once I figured out that the epilogue in each book is really just the first chapter of the next book (novella), and that each novella is really like a long chapter in an even longer book (series), and that the whole saga of a series seems to be something like "a year in the life of Doreen".. I started to enjoy the books a lot more. I know that might sound like a criticism, but it isn't.

I like it. I like the characters (even Doreen is starting to grow on me..) and I like the set up (now that I better understand what's happening). I like the slow build in the relationship and what's happening with the house and what might happen with the ex. I think I may be here for the duration.

Another delightful addition to Lovely Lethal Gardens series. Doreen grew up a bit more in this book. Her curiosity and tenacity was something to be noted, as well as her tendency to get tangled up in murder cases. Mack should get used to it now, but maybe it’s not that easy.

The mixed of mystery, light suspense and a sprinkle of love was a good one to engage readers in light afternoon read. The characters were so colourful, adding colors to the mix. I would say that this new branch of Ms. Mayer books is a refreshing blast.

I was provided a complementary copy by the author / publisher through Booksprout, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.

I think this is my favorite so far in the series as I was so torn about whether Penny did it or not and then I bounced around not knowing what to believe or direction things would go next with the motives which was fantastic as no one wants to know who did it straight away!! Doreen is settling in even more in her new life and finding what makes her happy and the fact she lives in a treasure trove of a house is a hoot, but it is her relationship with Mack thats the best as you can see they are both want more but Mack knows Doreen has to work out herself first. I can not wait to read the next book!!!!
