Hell is Unleashed The Hegemony controls Megara, the Confederation’s capital. War has raged for five years. Millions are dead, vast fleets of ships have been destroyed. But in the stronghold where Tyler Barron and his comrades have gathered their allies and the last of their strength, a plan is being devised. Barron and his people have fought bravely, stubbornly, relentlessly, but the Hegemony has been too strong. Now, Barron is relying on the one source of strength that remains to him. Defiance. He will not surrender, he will not yield. And he will not remain meekly on the defensive, waiting for the enemy to bring forward reinforcements to launch the final assault. That leaves only one option. Attack. Take back what the enemy has captured. Bring the war to the invader, and send them reeling back into the Badlands from whence they came. The fight will be difficult, the odds steep. But Barron is ready to take the final gamble, and as one, the thousands of spacers he leads are behind him, shouting a single rallying cry. Back to Megara! Blood on the Stars Book 1 - Duel in the Dark Book 2 - Call to Arms Book 3 - Ruins of Empire Book 4 - Echoes of Glory Book 5 - Cauldron of Fire Book 6 - Dauntless Book 7 - The White Fleet Book 8 - Black Dawn Book 9 - Invasion Book 10 - Nightfall Book 11 - The Grand Alliance (Coming) Book 12 - The Colossus (Coming)
Interesting that the book cover I have says it's book 12, but in reality it’s actually book 11. Wonder why they didn’t catch that during editing. Well, it’s not the only bad edit in this book. While they are not serious, there’s a lot of missing small words and things you don’t usually notice in a Jay Allan book. Just thought I’d point that out since the cover is so obvious.
I cannot believe we have come so far with Admiral Tyler Barron. Eleven books and he’s still fighting the good fight. As you’ll recall, the “Grand Alliance” has just survived a significant assault on the Craydon system. They are desperately trying to produce more ships and weapons in the eventual counterattack by the Hegemony. This is kind of wearing on the Grand Alliance troops. They know they are going to be in another fight to the death and most of them just want to get it over and done with.
Admiral Nguyen lays almost dead in a hospital on Craydon with little hope that he will ever recover. The doctors have already said that even if he lives, he’ll never have the facilities to command the fleet. So, now it’s on the shoulders of Admiral Tyler Barron. This is not a job he wanted nor does he feel qualified for, but his time has come and just like his Grandfather, Barron’s always rise to the challenge.
Tyler also has a plan. He is of the strong opinion that the Grand Alliance, such as it is, must go on the offensive and attack the Hegemony at Megara! He believes that the Hegemony has grown somewhat complacent in their return to Megara after their first unsuccessful attack agains these RIM warriors. They have called for reinforcements and they know they’re on the way so they feel there’s no need to re-attack Craydon until they are good and ready. The Hegemony Commander says he needs a good six months of recovery and then he’ll be ready to finish this war that should have ended a long time ago.
But, Admiral Barron isn’t going to wait six months. He’s ready to throw everything he has against the Hegemony at Megara and take back that system or die. He’s told all of his troops what the situation is and they know they are in for the fight of their lives. If the Hegemony defeats the Grand Alliance in this battle, then humanity will become slaves of the Hegemony subject to their genetic ranking. That’s not going to happen if Tyler Barron can help it.
Prior to the battle, Tyler needs to get word to any remaining Marines on Megara and have them attempt to take down some command and control centers on Megara so the Hegemony will have difficulty coordinating their defenses. The only problem with this plan is that it will required a very fast stealth ship to sneak in, broadcast a message and then attempt to get out. The odds of a successful mission are not very good. And worse, the best ship available for this mission is the Hermes captained by Andi LaFarge. That’s the one person that Tyler can’t send, but she won’t take “No” for an answer. She knows this is a mission for her ship and crew and knows Tyler doesn’t want her to go, but go she does. I don’t know if Tyler Barron can survive the loss of Andi LaFarge, if she doesn’t make it back.
So, is the “final” battle in the series. Maybe, maybe not! The action is intense to put it mildly and you won’t want to put down this book very often. There’s a good account of what happens on both sides with the Hegemony getting caught with something they can’t conceivably afford to lose. And just so you know, this isn’t the end of the series.
The Rim world’s have gathered their forces and they are rebuilding their strength and preparing for the next Hegemony attack. Admiral Tyler Barron is sick of waiting. Limited information indicated that over the last 5 years the Hegemony has rebuilt their strength much more than the Grand Alliance has.
Massive caravans of Hegemony supply ships and new battleships have helped them continue their hold of the Confederation home world and capital city. Millions are dead but now it is time. Time to act and stop wasting time. Admiral Barron wants to attack the Hegemony forces and work to drive them out of the Rim or to totally defeat them. The Confederation has a new, more powerful beam weapon with extended range. They hope it will play a difference in this battle. They have shared it with their best allies and it is now or never to win this endless war. The Hegemony also has a few secret weapons that they hope will turn the tide of the war in their favor…..
I don’t know how Jay Allan does it. He continues to write one great storyline after another. I no sooner finish one of his books and another one is released. I have read almost all of his books and everyone of them is great.
I am a fan of military Sci-Fi and Jay Allan is a great talent writing this genre of stories. I found this book moving from one tremendous space battle to the next. Toss in a couple of planet surface conflicts and you have a great storyline that held my interest. I rated this book 5 stars and I can’t wait until the next episode is released.
Still One of the Better Sci-fi Far Future Space Combat Authors
While still borrowing heavily from WWII and later Western Naval concepts, Jay Allan does not forget to adjust for the Science part like so many others. No human fighter pilots flying 50 foot apart while evading at half the speed of light or skimming enemy hulls at 5 feet (i.e. humans with sub-nanosecond thinking and reflexes). No instant communications across a solar system to coordinate a puncher movement. Not perfect. But avoids the constant headbanging faux past of less thoughtful authors who seem to be merely substituting Sci-fi terms into old WWII or modern naval novels. Best of all he knows when to avoid specific science details of how future tech works and when end user guides to operating limit, nations are best.
As an avid fan of this series, I honestly was a bit let down with this one. It felt like a filler , it also came across as longer than it should've been. That owing to a lot of unnecessary text, the same repetitive descriptions etcetera that plagued the other books. "The Grand Alliance" didn't really build up any of the characters, the battles were good but again, repetitive. It does setup for the next book nicely but right now I can't see the story ending in the next instalment. I'd love to be wrong about that. Overall, this book needs to be read if you're a fan of the series, but don't expect much.
Well as always I’ve enjoyed the characters in this book, I wish there was more technology that the grand alliance could use help fight their enemies. I enjoyed subplots as well. Just wondering how many books are going to be in this series, it seems that it’s dragging itself out just a wee bit. It seems that the confederation can’t catch a break. Everything seems to be thought to a stalemate. When are they going to start pushing their enemies back or getting more help? The story is riveting. I suggest people give the series a try but you have to start at book number one at least you do not have to wait for the next book.
Just as we select mares for stallions the old timers used to select partners for their children, even when they were children. Kings,queens-neighbours. I a way the Arab and Jewish countries still do it. A hawk like countenance for the East. A weak chin for the far west. Hemophiliacs for the weak chin, zero for the beak face. Perhaps PURE love is not everything. I Know what I want, a full nanotech suite! At least with this I don't have other people's morality issues. Still, what the author is trying gently to say is that one might be bred true, but training and discipline still mean a lot.
I'm giving this one five stars. It fits well into the story line and pushes the continuing saga of "Blood on the Stars" forward. By adding new technology and new plot twists, Jay Allan keeps the story fresh, and exciting for the most part. To make a long story short, Barron realizes that sitting on the defense is a doomed proposition. He needs to take back Meagara and kick out the Hegemony. The ending of this one is fairly exciting. I went from 50% to finished in no time, and the story line is well set up for the next one. Where is it already?
There are a number of spelling and grammatical errors in the book and even some consistency issues which hurt somewhat.
I’m curious to see if the author will discuss the “Cataclysm”. I’ve got a few theories on it and I’m wondering if I am right.
The characters are strong and the plotting has greatly improved. I’m hoping with what I’m guessing will be fewer plot lines that this will tighten things up for more.
The continuing saga of Tyler Barron and his allies in the Grand Alliance as they battle the Hegemony, a race of humans who think it is their destiny to rule everyone else. Barron and his forces drive the Hegemony from the space around the Confederation capital of Megara, at great cost in personnel and material to both sides. Now all that is left is to liberate the people on the ground. Stay tuned.
This Blood on the Stars series is a guilty pleasure. Somehow lost track of the series around book ten. Nice to find it again. No problem remembering characters (at my age, no small feat).. which tells you they were well developed in the first place. Pace of the books is astounding.. plot clips right along. Best part is the author is one prolific mofo.. Loose track of a series for a year and all of a sudden there are like six more books to read.
Yet another fabulous read in this series. Space battles that keep you on the edge and also ground pounding Marines always up for a fight. The only thing I don’t like is the author’s phrase, “my old friend” that he uses often. It gets a little old. Why can’t you just say, “my friend”? Otherwise I highly recommend.
As is expected if you have read to book 11 in the series. I enjoy the fight for freedom and the unwillingness to give up freedom for security. The biggest thing that plagues this book as it does almost all of Jay’s is the typos!! Please please hire someone to proofread your books. It messes with the way the book reads and is worth the effort.
Allan as usual has written an interesting and exciting sequel. I thought he beat the agony of of leaders having to send service subordinates to injury or death was way over done but the overall plot flowed and will keep the reader turning the pages
Ok all right book 11 and we still have a fresh story. Different societies developed and they have hero’s. Well, not in the Union yet. Well maybe. The main characters are well developed. Emotions run high. Good battles and no clear cut winners or losers. Book 12 is a must read.
The Grand Alliance is another outstanding episode of the Blood on the Stars series! I highly recommend this book. We see Admiral Barron take the fight to the Hegemony, and show that there is a fight they can win. But can he also draw the Union into the war. Looking forward to the next book.
I have been a jay Allan fan for a while. His writing does not disappoint. The Grand Alliance is a beautifully crafted adventure with action and suspense. Loved every minute of it. Cant wait for the next episode.
This saga needs to end now.way to much repetition, spelling errors and incorrect syntax.earlier books were o.k.-I was unsure of buying this book #11.should have listened to my inner voice! I will buy no more sequels-give this storyline the death it deserves......PLEASE NO MORE!!!!!
Jay Allan masterfully keeps this fantastic series fresh and intriguing. Complex battles, along with behind the scenes plots flesh out the intrigue. Thanks Jay for your continued excellence in writing and storytelling.
There was no point to any of this installment. A bunch of battles in space and some guerrilla action on the planet. That's it. In the end, there's no real resolution except that both sides are a bit more tattered.
Another great read in the series. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Recommend this book, series and author to all who love military sci-fi.
It is hard to believe that I had been through 11 of the Blood on the Stars books. Everyone from start to finish has captured my imagination and made me want to read the next one and this book was just as exciting.
Canon's on the left of them,Canon's on the right of them
Another great story,as allway's ,it draw's you in and make's you devour the book until it's gone .....then make's you wanting more!!!!! Can't wait for the next volume!!
I gave this book five stars because I absolutely love the storyline and the character development. The author has a way of telling a story that sucks you in completely and I can't wait for the next installment have this wonderful Space Opera.
It’s all getting a little to predictable. There’s no worse reveal than the heavily telegraphed, and obvious solution that you’ve spent the past several chapters thinking “Why don’t they just…” - only for “Tada!! They…”.
What a great read! Got to say...when Andi let Barron know she was still alive...I teared up. These characters make me happy! Like old friends at this point.
This has been the greatest book so far had me on the edge of my seat just reading wanting to know what comes next! I’m so glad and satisfied with the story and plot!
