Received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

This one had a very unique plot. A little far-fetched, but a perfect read for a lazy summer afternoon. The slow paced romance was so beautifully written that I went back and read many pages again and again. Ryder's paintings and his reasoning behind them were poetic. He could have been portrayed a little less sappy though.
Lisa was totally relatable and I was able to understand her predicament better than I thought I would. Everything is fair in love and war, eh? I liked the marketing guy she dated better than Ryder. He seemed genuinely interested in her than some version of her he created in his mind and idolized for years. And her bestfriend Aaron's story seemed like a weak link to the storyline.
3.5 stars for this one of a kind romance with a fairy tale touch.

This had a nice relaxed pace and the characters had a sweet vulnerability to them.
Though the naivete became slightly redundant as the book progressed, it still felt organic.
It reminded me of the movie Serendipity, but less intense and a little more desperate.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.

I honestly have no idea how I feel about Mona Lisas and Little With Lies. The synopsis intrigued me enough to request it from the website. However, after diving into this book I found that I was quite bored with everything and every one in it.

Speaking of those wonderful characters, we meet Ryder and Lily. No, not Ryder Flynn who would've improved this whole thing. This Ryder is a struggling artist until the day he runs into his muse Lily. Little does she know that they met on her worst day ever. She was super drunk and he had no idea what was going on in her life.. just that after they met his life changed.

After officially meeting one another, Lily doesn't quite tell him the whole truth about her life. Which he does find out towards the end and it kind of ruins things for them. Mostly because they don't trust each other at that moment but they still have those pesky feelings.

The romance between these two were eh to me. Nothing really stuck out to me and again, I was just bored with everything. I did, however, want to see how this book was going to end and it didn't really redeem itself. I wanted to like it, trust me I really did, but it was hard to force myself to read this. I felt like I was skimming through this more than actually paying attention (but it's not true because I sadly read every single page).

Overall, meh.

Romance is not my usual go-to genre but I was intrigued by the synopsis of this novel. After a random encounter, a commercial artist is so struck by a stranger that he adopts her as his muse and paints her into many of his works. Like Pygmalion, he falls in love with the woman depicted in his works. What will happen if they meet up in real life? Lily is not as glamorous as the person as the woman in his painting but tries to mold herself to that expectation. Can they fall in love for real? This was a light easy read. I would have liked to see more depth to the novel. Fans of Nicholas Sparks would probably enjoy this book.

The synopsis was so promising and I was hoping to love this. But alas, I did not. Lily's character is what did it in for me. I get she wanted to be skinny and stay skinny but it just kept honing into that constantly. First couple of times I was well aware as a reader that she wanted to keep her nice body, but after the fourth mention I struggled with the rest of the book. After awhile you understand that she has self-image issues and is struggling with her insecurities but it was a bit heavy. If it hadn't been for that pet peeve of mine though the story flowed really well and was a fun, quick romance.

I loved the first half, but then I felt the drama and Lily’s insecurities really dampened my enjoyment of the second half. It was ok, but I wish I had enjoyed it more. I liked the writing and the whole idea thou.
For me it was good, it just wasn’t great.

Mona Lisas and Little White Lies, John Herrick

Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews

Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Women's Fiction.

Well, this is written by a man and Still classified as Women's Fiction – I just don't understand why we try to exclude men we should be encouraging readers not discouraging them :-(

Anyway, my first read by this author. It was well written, and the story flowed well but.....maybe In was just over-expecting. I love the fame/non fame romance trope and with the famous lead being an artist, ( such a change from the usual rock/film star leads), and being an artist myself I was hooked. Throw in that Lily isn't a primped and pampered lady but one that works as a mechanic and I thought I'd love this.

So what went wrong? Well. Its not the writing but the story-line. I didn't understand why the first 30% Lily and Ryder had barely met, and she was involved with Evan. Unless maybe it was to showcase her insecurity in her looks? Lily is lovely but not bursting with confidence, even though her friends tell her she is beautiful, she just can't see it. And of course her job isn't one that springs to mind as feminine even though she's good at it and loves it.
I loved that Ryder inserted himself and Lily into so many paintings after only meeting her once, though I'm dubious that he could paint her so exactly without and reference pics ;-). still, artistic licence all round! Once his paintings start becoming famous and seen everywhere though the hunt is on, who is the mysterious lady in his work. They meet after Lily sees one of these works....and it doesn't go too well. Ryder isn't letting her go though, six years he's been thinking of her and now he's found her he's not letting her disappear again. I guess this is where my expectations and the book parted ways. I expected more of the fame aspect, more of the hounding the media do to people.
The breakup was a shock, it just didn't seem real even though I suspected it would happen that way. I felt they needed more of a reason to part, and that Ryder was wrong. I did like that it wasn't one of those break up and two pages later make up books. I like my drama to wallow, to really feel “will they get back, or has too long passed?” A side effect of the break up was a revelation about someone that caught me out, and yet looking back all the clues were there but I missed them. I love that kind of surprise, clever planning.
I'm not sure why its billed as comedy though? That has me mystified, and I had to go back and check the description but yes, comedy is there in the blurb. I didn't find it though.....

Stars: three a half, a fun read but a one off only for me.

Mona Lisas and Little White Lies captures the tale of Ryder, an artist in his prime and picking up speed in his career, and Lily, a female mechanic that captured his heart in a chance meeting years ago. It is a sweet story: their paths crossed briefly, but her image just wouldn't leave him. The idea is romantic and Herrick's use of detail is key as he, like Ryder, paints us a picture of their story. Readers get to watch their love blossom due to a fairy tale scenario, while facing real problems like if their worlds are too far apart (he a celebrity, and she is... not) and how to fix a situation once you have lied. These elements made the story relatable.
I liked the story overall, but I didn't really like Lily. Her lack of confidence became infuriating, from constantly worrying about what she ate and her "figure" as her only selling feature, to being embarrassed about her life once Ryder came into it. Thankfully, the plot of the story and the various little conflicts kept the story moving forward without these character flaws becoming too much of a concern.

I received an advance digital copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

I'm sorry, I tried really hard to like this book. The first half was sweet and promising, especially the way Ryder and Lily get to know each other. But everything beyond became annoying. I am not an avid romance reader but once in a while I really enjoy them.

Here are the main topics that bothered me: First, the plottwist was nearly non-existend. It was such a weak argument that I couldn't take it seriously. Since it was first mentioned I knew what would happen in the end. And even the car race couldn't fix it.
I do understand why Lily did what she did, because I can relate to her as a physicist. But her insecurity got on my nerves. Especially because Ryder is such a sweet person! From the beginning I belived that all his intensions were truly honest.
And thirdly: Why had there to be so much talking about Thailand? That felt so random and inappropiate. In general the dialogues were really weak. When Lily and Ryder talked, it felt like an interview. Lily asked a question and Ryder talked for a page until Lily asked the next thing. And when Ryder starts telling about Thailand it's like he is the only one who knows everything about Thailand and has to explain the whole culture to her. There is nothing wrong with wanting to teach someone else about a different country but the way Ryder did was just weird.

My best friend did some research why the name Ryder Flynn sounds so familiar: Flynn Rider from Disney's Tangled

In this interesting novel, mechanic Lily Machara becomes the muse of an upcoming artist named Ryder Flynn following a brief encounter in a hotel lobby. Six years later, Ryder is a famous artist showcasing his beautiful depictions of a mystery woman. Everyone wants to know the identity of the modern Mona Lisa in his paintings.

After Lily sees one of the paintings, Lily and Ryder are drawn together in an intoxicating romance, and the media is determined to reveal the real Lily Machara who has captured the heart of the handsome artist, much to her resistance and trepidation.

Will insecurities, little white lies, and public scrutiny bring this celebrity couple down?

John Herrick writes a fascinating story, the strength of which is in the development of the romantic frisson between Lily and Ryder. Insecure and witty Lily is unaware of her beauty and feels like an outsider in Ryder's world. For his part, Ryder seems a kind and confident man but is it ethical to paint an image of a stranger without their permission? With its engaging blend of straightforwardness and originality, Mona Lisas and Little White Lies is highly entertaining and well written. Both main characters are likeable, though not without their flaws, and I highly recommend it for a light and indulgent read.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from BooksGoSocial via NetGalley at my request, and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

Mona Lisa's and Little White Lies is a fun romance story. Lily is an auto mechanic. She is unaware that she has become a muse for a painter and her image is now everywhere. Ryder is the painter who saw Lily,by chance, and felt compelled to paint her. This puts Lily in the spotlight where she never wanted to be. Is it right for someone to paint an image of a stranger without permission? Are Lily and Ryder developing feelings for each other? I think it's a question of ethics and Ryder has none. Lily is a sympathetic likeable character. The premise is unique, and the story is engaging, entertaining and well written. I recommend for a fun light read. Mona lisas and little white lies ⭐️

Ryder is a struggling artist, this is until he meets Lily. I liked the prologue but then we follow Lily and i was completely Not invested in her life at all. I didnt care for her perspective or her friends which makes for a very dull story when you dont care about the main character.
Ryder continues to follow Lily and learn more about her and her secrets and she cant help but fall for him as well...
I didnt enjoy this. I liked the art aspect but I didnt get enough of it. As soon as they got together it was just them and nothing else.

This is a gentle romance with a well written although ultimately rather passive female lead. Although Lily has unknowingly been placed on a pedestal by Ryder, she defies expectations by being a motor mechanic who is treated as 'one of the boys’ by the men she works mkwith. She seems to feel rather awkward in expressing her femininity, she doesn't wear makeup, finds it difficult to flirt and is obsessed with cars. Her date with Evan is an example of how awkward she feels, he takes her to an expensive restaurant where she is unsure of what she's wearing and how to behave. The author has a very delicate way of showing how Lily feels and who she is, she's a very nuanced character.

Lily was surprised at how simple it had become to ease deeper into conversation with Evan. Although some aspects of their date struck her as superficial, she discovered she could play the part rather well.

She's very passive during dates with Evan and she constantly worries about ‘keeping her slim figure’. Her relationships are unequal conversations are one sided. When she meets Ryder he doesn't ask her anything about herself except what she does which she lies about. When he asks her about her childhood dreams she describes wanting to be a beautiful doll.

Ryder had told her he knew everything he needed to know because he knew her deep down. He’d promised. Lily had tried to tell him more, but he didn’t seem interested in knowing more.

I think that the portrayal of the relationship could possibly be the weakest part of the book, probably due to Lily's self esteem issues. She just seems to spend her time asking her boyfriends about themselves and mentally not believing herself worthy. This is problematic as potentially she is looking for self worth by finding a boyfriend. There is part of me that wishes we could have had more of Lily discovering her fabulousness with Aaron and Brooke, but the novel was too short and focussed on the relationship with Ryder. It's a sweet, romantic novel but by no means that steamy. It gets a wouldn't make Grandma blush rating.

Stars: ✦✦✦✧✧

So as usual, I'll tell 3.0 things I liked about the book and 2.0 things I didn't like.

So what did I think?

+1 | The idea itself is clever and interesting

+1 | The characters in the book were well though out, each with layers and flaws

+/-1 | The writing was almost lyrical with descriptions, but not always adding to the plot thus making it slower

- 1 | It had no surprises nor mystery to it. A good story, but nothing too different

Read on lovelies,

It's been a while since I've read a good old fashioned romance. This book was for me like a modern day Cinderella. Lily who is an auto mechanic is seen by Ryder as the love of his life and by painting her he keeps her image alive for him. It is when they initially meet that some sparks fly. I really loved the story as well as the characters. The author has the ability to keep you as the reader glued to the pages until the very end. I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a bit of romance.

I really enjoyed the opening chapters, and meeting the leads for the first time. I loved how he saw such beauty through her pain. I adored the pedestal he placed her on, and yet it wasn't set at an unattainable height. When Lily discovered herself EVERYWHERE, I could only imagine how disconcerting that had to feel, but the emotions it stirred were enough to set in motion events that may not otherwise have come to pass, allowing her to discover not just the artist behind the art, but the beauty of her own character in ways she hadn't previously viewed herself. Oh and hats off for the nonconventional life, or rather career choice the author gave her.

Now, I will admit to being a bit concerned for our artistically rendered Mona Lisa as she reached a crossroads or two and things could have gone so many ways my head was spinning! Regardless of the outcome, I was content in the knowledge of one thing...it was gonna be one heck of a trip. With his high level emotions and her feistiness, there were bound to be some fireworks. The only issue I had was the lynchpin that seemed ready to potentially tear their whole world apart. I had to really place myself in the story and view it through their eyes to feel its full force.

Like any work of artistry, in the end, it had its ups and downs, but its true beauty shined through. Fans of the author's previous works will not be disappointed, nor will those just being inducted into his fan club. This is definitely one novel that is its own unique work of art.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
After a chance encounter when Ryder, a starving artist, rescues a drunk Lily at her cousin's wedding, he can't get her face out of his mind. She becomes his muse in everything from his own personal paintings to magazine and billboard advertisements.
Lily, an auto mechanic, has become a celebrity without even knowing it and everyone is clamoring to find out who the woman in the paintings really is. When she finds out, she tracks Ryder down to confront him but ends up falling in love with him. She only wants to be the glamorous woman he's created on canvas. One little white lie about her job won't hurt. But when the truth hits the tabloids, everything falls apart.
I thought this was a different twist on the Cinderella story. Like the Prince in the fairy tale only having a shoe to find his true love, Ryder has only a first name and the memory of her face. Cute story.

Thought this one was ok but nothing special. Lily's character bothered me a bit. She was so insecure and she ceaselessly ran through her insecurities about her job as a mechanic, about her looks, about her weight. It seemed a bit unbelievable to me that she let her relationship with Ryder get as far as it did without telling him about her real job. Wasn't a bad story to me but Lily's character makes me hesitant to recommend this book to other readers.

A sweet romantic read. The characters are flawed, especially Lily. The story drags you in. There a few parts that are a bit slow, but overall it's a fun, light read. My biggest complaint was the way Lily's flaws are consistently on the pages yet, after the truth comes out, Ryder's actions and words at the car show are never brought back up. That felt like a plot failure because those actions had a big impact. Overall it's a good read.

Ryder is a struggling artist. He's trying to break into the art world with his paintings but not making a dent in his progress...until he sees Lily Machara. From a distance, Lily and her beautiful auburn hair make a remarkable impression on Ryder. He watches her from afar and can't help but wonder more about her. Lily has no idea who he is and is only in the same place as part of a bridal party in a wedding.

Lily is from St. Louis and works at an auto shop as a mechanic. Perhaps not the girliest of jobs but she loves every second of it. It's been six years since the chance encounter with Ryder at a hotel in Cleveland -- an encounter she doesn't even remember -- when she starts being recognized by customers as the girl in the paintings. In a quirky twist of fate, Ryder has blown up as an artist and hasn't been able to get Lily out of his mind all this time, now turning her into his muse for his success.

Will they be together and be the real life couple that Ryder's paintings depict? I couldn't tell you. To be perfectly honest. I only read about 75% of this book. I wanted to like it, I wanted to love it but found myself unable to finish it. The story in itself has potential. It may be a little far fetched but the general idea is there. However, I couldn't quite make sense of what the author was trying to accomplish with his descriptions of the characters. Lily's personality almost seems too wholesome to be working as a mechanic. It was awesome to read about a girl character being placed in that setting but it's almost as if the author wasn't quite sure what to do with her in it. The dialogues between Lily and Brooke, Lily's roommate, didn't seem completely real. I give the author some credit for attempting to write about women's interactions but it just wasn't quite there. It's as if I was reading what a guy thinks happens when two women are talking about a guy they like. It just didn't feel honest.

There were also some parts of the book that didn't make sense. For example, there's a part of the book where Lily goes out to dinner to what is described as a Mediterranean restaurant but the food options are not Mediterranean at all! Paella is a dish from Spain and Gnocchi is an Italian dish. Doesn't make sense and it completely threw me off.

Lily's character also seems hyper-focused on her weight when she's already described as being slender, which was off-putting at best. Finally, the thing that really made me put this book down was a comment that Brooke makes before Lily's goes on a trip. Brooke is helping Lily pack and she says: "I can teach you makeup. Let me make you beautiful, just this once." Whoa. What is that supposed to mean? That even though Lily's character is described as slender and having beautiful auburn hair (and let's not forget how infatuated Ryder is with the first sight of her), that she's not beautiful unless she wears make up? Maybe I'm just being hyper-sensitive but the comment really rubbed me the wrong way.

Ugh, I do not like giving out bad reviews. I'm sure there are plenty of readers that enjoyed this. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them. Better luck next time.

ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The reason I requested Mona Lisas and Little White Lies by John Herrick on Netgalley was because of the cover. The vibrant colours just drew me in, and I wanted to know what it was about. It turned out to be a run of the mill rom com, which is always nice for some light reading. The story focuses on the lives of two people: Lily the car mechanic and Ryder the painter. Short chapters show alternating perspectives and keep the story fast-paced and interesting. It did, however, almost feel like two separate books: the part before Lily and Ryder met, and the part after.

One of my favourite things about the book was the descriptive language. Especially when it focused on bringing a painting alive. The way the scene is described, as well as the use of colour and texture were mesmerising. There was one sentence somewhere in the beginning that I just had to read several times because I found it so beautiful. This was the first time Ryder painted Lily and it left a lasting memory throughout the book.

A point of annoyance for me, though, was Lily’s character. I wanted to yell at her a lot for being so insecure. She came across as a self-conscious sixteen year-old, when in fact she’s a thirty-something year-old woman. It was hard for me to match those things up and actually see her as an adult. Additionally, the story contained some over the top reactions to seemingly small occurrences. It gave it a bit of a ‘drama queen effect’, which I disliked.

For lovers of rom coms, I would definitely recommend this book. It’s predictable but sweet. If you’re not a fan of that sort of thing, I don’t think you’ll enjoy it much.

Mona Lisa’s and Little White Lies is the first book I’ve read about a muse. This book is atypical for me, that’s what drew me in to start with. It’s prose is in nice 3rd person, that is easy to follow.

The book began on a good note, when Ryder Flynn a up and coming artist sees his “muse” in a smart auto mechanic after one brief encounter. The story really begins six years into the future wheres Ryder has become a famous artist for his beautiful portrayal of a mystery woman, Lily the witty mechanic, who is essentially clueless.

The public wants to know who the woman behind the modern Mona Lisa paintings is. When Fate has the two cross paths again, urges are given in to, making Lily prime suspect numero uno to any reporter wanting to cash in on their love. Their world begins to spiral when little white lies, insecurities and the public want this couple to fail.

Unaware of her true beauty, Lily feels alien to Ryder’s fancy lifestyle. While Ryder is an kind and confident artist who captures the quintessence of anything around him. It comes down to them dealing with self-esteem, self image and face the validity of their feelings.

I wish there was more of a backstory into Lily’s relationship with Aaron. What happened between them? The ending was a little cliché and predictable. Since this is somewhat of a romantic comedy, I do recommend it.

I received this ARC for my unbiased opinion. Thank you to the authors, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity.

This was a cute 'romance' type book that held my attention fairly well. :Lily is a mechanic who sees herself as plain and 'one of the guys'. Ryder is an artist who appears to be living a very exciting, Hollywood type life. Neither of the characters are what they appear on the surface, but in a really good way. Lily starts seeing her face in multiple places and is furious yet intrigued as she ponders why this is happening.
Ryder saw Lily once years ago and she became a sort of muse to him. He put her in many of his art pieces and this is how their faces became well known.
I really enjoyed reading their back stories and watching what happens as they get to know each other. It was a little predictable and I didn't love that Lily's face was used without her consent, even for art. However, it was overall a good, quick read that I enjoyed.
