"Equating Adam with man already shows us the root of the problem: in many cultures, actual men are equated with man as such. Some languages even have only one word for both (homme in French, for example). Men implicitly stand for humanity, whereas women are considered to be somehow derivative, deficient, inferior human beings."

What the English title of this book omits from its German original is A Brief History of Feminism "in a Euro-American context". This book does not make the claim to showcase the history of feminism all around the world. It is limited to a western lense. What I like about this graphic novel is that it shows feminists and feminist thinking long before the term was coined and long before the first wave of feminism existed. It teaches a forgotten and ignored account of the past - that of women, and tries to explain its origin and characteristics. Of course, this is, as stated in the title, a very brief account, which makes it impossible to mention every aspect of feminism or to define it in detail. But it is a powerful introduction to the movement - and an entertaining one, too.

I don't know how I really feel about this book. On the one hand, I like that it's in a graphic form since that can appeal to a certain audience. So too can the fact that it's brief. On the other hand, one of my problems is the brevity. The author does show some of the complications of feminism, particularly its tendency to focus on white middle class women; however, I felt that it didn't delve deeply enough into the work of black and queer women. They were mentioned as calling out the second wave and demanding intersectionality, but I felt more could have been written about that.

While this did indeed serve as an intro to Feminist literature and figures, the presentation could be better. The typography is horrid and unorganized. The chapters are very short and could have had a bit more meat on them. The cartoon dialog is pretty corny, though demonstrative.

Third Wave is very lightly touched on. In an 80 page book, it got 3 pages. The book also very abruptly ends with a "To Be Continued" at the end, and doesn't bother to conclude on any greater point about women, feminism, or First/Second/Third wave distinctions.

Although I learned some stuff I didn't know before, this 80 page book took me a long time to read because I was never excited to read it (due to presentation, not subject matter).

This is a very short, illustrated overview of feminism, primarily from the perspective of euro-american, white, middle class women. A few other reviews have mentioned that this makes for a very narrow view of feminism, but considering that this is an 80 page overview, I think it did an decent job, especially since the last panel of the last page leaves off with 'to be continued,' so I think it's the first volume of a series (that will, I assume, get progressively more in-depth). While this probably isn't the best book about feminism for people who are familiar with the topic, this is a book that I would recommend to someone who has no idea what feminism actually is or the history of the idea.

This was a good book highlighting the history of feminism, and i haven't found another book which does that well, but sometimes it's not subjective and you can tell the author's personal opinions are coming out in the cartoons. Maybe that was intentional, but i feel like it takes away from the main point, which is to teach about the history of feminism and what has categorically happened in the past to get us to this point.

Exactly as the title suggests, this is a brief history of feminism, told via graphic novel. It starts early with ancient civilizations all the way through to intersectionality, postfeminism and Third Wave feminism of today. Also, Switzerland didn’t give women the right to vote until the 1970s!?! Wtf. Very fast read, a bit dry on facts in places but helped grow my awareness of the length, reach and evolution of feminism. And the fight continues…

It was okay. I read it all the way through because it's comics/graphic novel, otherwise I probably would have finished it.

Severely abridged!
The books starts with very nice introduction and it addressed the early waves of feminism with clarity. The more it progressed towards recent forms, I couldn’t understand what triggered these changes. Interestingly the books mentions that there is no clear dogma or agenda for feminism which is weird.
I wish it were more detailed and there were connections between different stages.

This is a must read! It’s less than 100 pages, well-researched, easy to approach because of its graphic novel like style, and packed full of information! A great place to start with ample suggestions throughout of key works in Feminist literature if wanting to do further study

The very first line presents gender as binary!

Dated?

Willfully obtuse?

Who can say?

The intro and first chapter briskly maintain that there are just two genders (and of course, many folks would agree — but a book about feminism published in the last five years sure as hell should address the fact that not everyone does!) and acknowledges its own European bias (though not its white bias). The absence of big-name American feminists feels glaring — the authors aren’t kidding about the “European” thing.

Originally published in German, the book whips thru 20th and 21st century French and German feminism in a quick, fun, edifying way — tho I gotta admit I skimmed because I found the art and b/w deliberately naïf comix design really ugly. (Bummer, since I really liked the cover!) It feels so cursory and so culturally limited, it’s not much of an intro to or nuanced history of feminism...even with that “brief” disclaimer on the cover.

This is a graphic novel, originally published in Germany, so it is written with a European-Western slant. The book’s short chapters cover feminism in antiquity and the Middle Ages through today’s third wave of modern feminism. Topics include the beginnings of an organized women’s movement, women and the right to vote, pregnancy, domestic violence, womanism and intersectionality, gender mainstreaming, and queer feminism. It’s a lot for a little graphic novel to cover in 80 pages. But to someone who is almost completely unfamiliar with many of the important figures throughout feminism’s history, it’s a good primer. Yet, names such as Mary Daly and Gloria Steinem are not even mentioned. The graphic novel format is appealing, though, and it would be interesting to see a similar work done with a specific concentration on feminism in the United States.

I liked the fact that it was brief and illustrated. But in my opinion it could have focused more on the importance of women of colour who did a lot for the feminist movement in the second wave. It was too brief at points.

I hate to give this book such a low writing, but it failed for me all over the place.

First - very short book with a hardcover, most of the pages taken up by large comics with incredibly tiny, difficult to read text. The quality of the comics was personally quite "meh" for me - frankly overly comical and I didn't love the general inking style but that's going to be a totally subjective matter. A larger book (both in length, page size, and font size) with a soft cover would have been far more worth the money (thankfully I bought it used). The writing is incredibly hard to read due to how small and tight the font is. The font within the comics is also very small (no hand lettering). I had to hold the book right up to my face the entire reading, which wasn't comfortable, and the comic font was also incredibly confusing. It's difficult to tell when/if someone is being directly quoted versus when the words within the comic are just an explanation or loose reenactment, which isn't ideal in a history book.

The book is too brief on essentially all topics. There would be a brief reference to this or that with essentially no way to contextualize it and then you were off again. Yes, I could muddle through most of it, but as someone who usually has zero difficulty sorting context out in fiction and/or nonfiction works, I don't know who this book is for because it's frankly hard to get through due to the choppiness of the text never giving you a full picture.

The book also falls short in the places I do know my history - again, a longer book would have been better. Glaring absences are things like using "LGBTQI" and leaving off the A and + which are both important issues in today's feminism/queerness, etc. There's a comic that I can't tell if it's satirical or sincere (I unfortunately think it was a sincere portrayal of a more equal home) when a man talks about how he does the housework because his job is less important because it's part time. I don't think we should put up with that sort of shit when it's said about women working part-time and I don't think it's appropriate to then extrapolate it to men taking part in household work. Plenty of part-time jobs are harder physically and/or mentally compared to some full-time work and declaring that part-timers do all the housework as a good example of equality misses the ball.

Again, the book is simply too choppy, too scattershot, and too short to really be a good history - it goes beyond brief and into utterly lacking. On top of that, the book has zero reference pages. So again, it's hard to determine what's a direct quote and what's a funny comic aside and you can't even properly dig into references where you need/want more info. Not a book I'll end up keeping.
