5+ stars (8/10 hearts). Man, I fell in love with this series as soon as I read this story, and I have never looked back. It’s absolutely brilliant!

Contemporary Phoenix: 19-year-old Emily is desperate to keep her job and add to her college fund. Car problems and threaten both, but can her new, unexpected coworker make things better… or mess them up beyond belief?

This was my first time reading spy-comedy (or really spy anything) and suffice it to say, I love it. It’s probably highly inaccurate and cliché, but since I have no expertise in the genre, to me it’s delightfully fresh and enthralling. I love writing style, so full of Emily’s thoughts and so very humorous… sarcastic, but not unkindly so.

The characters are hands-down my favourites. Emily is sweet and brave and hilarious, and just such a nice girl, struggling to get by but determined to chase her dreams. Brent is honestly epic—funny, caring, and with a touch of the Absent-Minded/Incompetent Character, endearing him without making him unrealistic. And Dr. Novack was a nice old man.

The plot was so much fun. It’s still riveting, even after I’ve read it approximately eight times. I can’t say much more about the plot because #spoilers but I love Emily & Brent’s great (platonic) friendship and they’re so much fun together. And the cliffhanger is awesome!

Overall, this is SUCH an epic beginning for the series and a great book in its own right. The books just get better and better and build off each other so well. After you read this, you just have to keep on! I read this series every year and just love it more every time. It’s the perfect light, action-filled, humorous, but still slightly serious read!

Content: For those who care—although it’s absolutely clean and nothing at all romantic or anything inappropriate even hinted, Emily & Brent do spend a lot of time together alone + there is some (nonromantic) undetailed touching. Also some mild, undetailed violence.

A Favourite Humorous Quote: “You are without a doubt, the second-worst barista this shop has seen,” Emily said seriously, staring down at the splatter pattern made by 16 ounces of iced soy latte.
“Second worst?” ...
“Yes,” [Emily] said, starting the drink over from scratch. “Second worst because the last new-hire didn’t even try. She just seemed to be here to watch me work.”
“Huh,” Brent said. “Well, maybe she was undercover—one of those mystery shoppers, checking up on you. Or maybe a health inspector?”
“I don’t think you can become a health inspector at 16.”
“Well, you do have a point.”

I had seen this book floating around GR for a while now, and I finally got a chance to read it! I wasn't too sure what to expect - I knew it had something to do with spies, but this is different than your normal espionage read.

Characters: Emily and Brent were great together - let's just get that out of the way first. I really enjoyed that Emily was an average girl with average problems. (I enjoy the normal, "mundane" characters the most sometimes!) Watching Brent fumble his way through the coffee shop was humorous, but we all knew there was more than just a normal day at the cafe going on a few chapters in. I loved Emily always wanting Brent to pull out a super-spy gadget, and then he'd always tell her, "Movie stuff, Emily. Movie stuff." So true! But Brent was pretty epic of a spy - I would've like to see a little bit more about him, but I guess that's what the rest of the series is for. And the doctor guy ... Aleksy. Cool dude! (Also, his name. I liked it.)

Setting/Writing Style/Plot: The writing was very straight-forward, and it totally worked with this type of book. It just felt casual and chill. And the setting? Very normal - see a theme here? But the plot ... not so normal. Emily got dragged into a mess! (I also found Brent's spy headquarters pretty fun.)

Moral/Theme: Not too much to say here. It was a short book, so there wasn't a ton of room to develop the characters much or see much growth, but it would've been nice to see some sort of moral. Maybe I just totally missed it (highly possible), but this just seemed like a clean read, not really a Christian one. I think there were a few prayers, but that was about it.

Overall ... this was fun. It wasn't really thrilling, but it wasn't boring, either. It worked really well as a relaxing story where my brain didn't have to work too hard, and neither did my emotions! I'd be interested in reading the other books in this series sometime in the future!

Characters: Emily was a well-developed main character. I appreciated that she seemed like a normal college-aged girl. I did feel like she was more of a bystander to most of the action though, and I would've liked to see a few scenes from Brent's POV so I could get in on the excitement.

Language: Clean.

Moral: I can't remember an exact moral, but Emily did pray on occasion.

Plot: This story moved along well thanks to Emily and Brent's joking friendship and Emily's introduction to the spy world.

Romance: Clean. This book didn't contain a romance.

Writing: This is the first book I've read by Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick, and I enjoyed her writing style. Everything flowed well, and she included enough description for me to understand what was going on but not enough to slow down the reading experience.

Overall: Red Rover, Red Rover was a quick, entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy Christian fiction and spy stories.

I’m hooked!

I’m so glad I decided to read the Accidental Cases of Emily Abbott series by Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick. I highly enjoyed this first book, titled Red Rover, Red Rover.

I’ve seen these books around a lot in the past year, and several of my friends have loved them--I heard nothing but good about them. But I didn’t think about reading them myself until recently. After finally reading one of Perry Elisabeth’s other books recently, I knew I had to read the rest of hers. I couldn’t resist picking up almost ALL of them at a recent sale--and I also couldn’t resist the urge to read Red Rover, Red Rover right away!

Definitely the pick up this series and others by the author, if it sounds like something you’d enjoy! I loved it!

I don’t usually read contemporary, mysteries, or anything fun and fluffy. But sometimes we need that kind of book! I certainly do right now. Red Rover, Red Rover was perfect for me to read on days when I’m too distracted to read something else. It was light enough that it didn’t take a lot of effort or stress to read, and engaging and well-written enough that I wanted to read more than usual, and enjoyed every moment.

I expected this to be a good book to read before bed, that wouldn’t be too hard to put down. But I was wrong! Right when I intended to put the book down, it shot into high gear and became intense and exciting. I couldn’t stop in the middle of the action, just when things heated up near the beginning.

I should’ve expected that from a spy novel, but I didn’t, because this is also a light, fun comedy. But Red Rover, Red Rover hit the best of both, and much more! It was riveting and kept me on the edge of my seat, especially in the chapters that were full of suspense or action.

And the humor was top-notch! I loved the teasing and banter that riddled the pages every time the two main characters were together--and the protagonist, Emily, is witty and fun on her own, so even her narration is constantly entertaining. I was grinning or laughing on nearly every page the entire time. And there were plenty of heartwarming moments thrown in among the humor, to make me grin in a different way!

Even when there wasn’t a car chase happening, the characters were so winning and well-developed that I was always engaged and interested. I enjoyed both Brent and Emily so much, separately and together! They get along so well, both platonically and perhaps as something more in the future--but I LOVED that they are content to be friends and not think about anything else even in their own minds, especially since they’ve only known each other for two days. It was refreshing, and I wish there were more books like that. And aside from their awesome friendship, I enjoyed both of them on their own. I relate to Emily’s uncertainty and worry, and I love her personality and determined joy. And Brent is hilarious, and also so kind, respectful, protective, and much more--the best kind of guy. I also enjoyed another wise, older character who comes up a few chapters in, but I can’t say much without spoilers.

I was enjoying every page too much to care that I normally don’t go for fluffy or contemporary books! However, I did appreciate so, so much that this book is NOT a romance--meaning that the romance isn’t the most prominent part of the book, whether or not there’s action too. Red Rover, Red Rover is adventure, instead--my favorite genre! Almost every novel is a romance at its heart, these days, and I was so pleased to discover that this isn’t! Thankfully it didn’t appear to be one, and it also didn’t become one despite that appearance. There was definitely a shippable couple and a friendship that could turn into something else someday--and I hope it does, but I’m in no hurry, and I’m glad the characters aren’t, either. It was SO refreshing to have a male and female lead with obvious chemistry, who enjoyed being around each other and were perfectly compatible--but who were NOT focused on romance or attraction. They never once thought of each other in that way, or focused on how good-looking the other person was, or on fluffy feelings--and all those things would’ve been premature. They were both intent on being good friends and respecting the other person, and I love that.

And the book is so awesome, fun, and sweet that I didn’t care at all if it could really happen. Sure, it’s far-fetched, and that’s probably not how real spies work--despite Brent and Emily’s constant joking about the movies getting it wrong. But I don’t even care, even though I’m normally a realist. I was willing to believe in the story while reading, and that’s enough for me--it felt realistic, and it successfully suspended my disbelief.

My rating for Red Rover, Red Rover is a full 4 STARS. I definitely recommend this book! I think it’s still on sale today, as of this post--but only for a few more hours.

I can’t wait to read the rest of Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick’s books, including the sequels to this one. I’m SO glad I picked up all of them at once, because now I can read them easily and soon!

2026 Reread
First finished book of the year! I didn't read this series at all last year, so this first book was extra delightful and fun.

2024 Reread.
After telling a friend at church about these books, I decided I just had to reread the first one before I let her borrow it. Just what I needed.

2023 reread. Still just as much fun.

Has it really been since 2019 that I read this book? That's sad. But it was the prefect book to read today. I wanted something exciting, without passionate romance, that I knew I'd like. Emily Abbot to the rescue. Perhaps it's time I reread the entire series. And I'm bumping my rating up.

June 2019
I don't usually read a book twice in one year, but I read this one back in March in kindle format, and
I just got the paperback. It was just so cute that I couldn't keep from reading it again. And it was just as much fun the 2nd time through.

This story had me chuckling, interested, smirking, on the edge of my seat, and chuckling again all within seconds. It was delightful!
Emily was just such fun, and her assumptions that all things she’s seen on spy movies is real had me grinning.
Brent was good, except for the coffee. And him and his code names!
The action was well written. Intense, but not too much so. Sometimes high action scenes leave you confused, but this book really didn’t, which added to my enjoyment of the story.

I’m looking forward to the next book in these series.

Re-read
This was so much fun to re-read! There were hilarious bits of dialogue I'd forgotten, and I love what Brent said about being ordinary. ;) Also, I'm re-reading in paperbacks, and I LOVE the size and the redness of this book. <3

Original Review
FTC DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy of this book. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

I love how I “accidentally” hide ARCs from myself and rediscover them at the exactly perfect moment. Especially when said ARC is the perfect blend of stimulating and lighthearted, a rare find indeed. Special enough to keep me reading late into the night and grab my Kindle first thing in the morning. ;) You better believe that happened with this book. :D

I expected this novella to be hilarious and banterful (same author as The Kitten Files, after all), but I was blown away by how clever and exciting the story was. If I ever have to be in a car chase, I know just who to ride with. XD These characters definitely stole my heart in just a few pages. ;) All the Arizona references and Emily’s money concerns especially rang true for me, and I found the scenes with the coffee shop intriguing and fun. (Seriously, though, how do baristas keep all of that straight?!!) I look forward to Emily’s next adventure (and codename!).

Just a note, there was some peril and mentions of a gunshot wound, though not described. Also, a reference to a minor character “flipping someone off” and another cursing.

Best quotes: “You are without a doubt, the second-worst barista this shop has seen,” Emily said seriously, staring down at the splatter pattern made by 16 ounces of iced soy latte. “Second worst?”

When they’d entered the narrow hall and opened the freezer, Emily whispered, “Is something going on?” “You’re very perceptive.” She stared at him. “Well, are you gonna tell me what it is?” “I just did. What is going on is…you’re very perceptive.” Brent gave her a smirk.

Altogether, this was a great read. I’m sure this series and I are going to be friends. :D

Finally got my hands on an official early copy, and it was just as good as I remembered. :) I love the banter and friendship between Emily and Brent and the way that even though he's the one with the ready wit, she can usually manage to make him laugh. I love Emily's perceptiveness and quick thinking, even though she's not trained as a spy. And I love her reactions when she figures out who Brent really is--and his reactions to her reactions! ("Movie stuff, Emily..." XD)

Also, I love, love, love the way this book ends, and I can't wait for the rest of the series! <3<3<3

Content--mentions of cursing (no words); mention of someone being "flipped off"; car chases and accidents, gunfire, and explosions; mentions of blood and injuries (not graphic)

I received a free copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Yes!!! Read this last year, so I don't remember all the specifics, except that I absolutely adored it. :D Better review to come when I get my hands on a copy. ;)

Okay, this was cute. After a few reads that were a little too much in the romance field, I just wanted something light—and this was perfect. Sure, it was corny and not fully realistic, but it was also adorable, fast-paced, and enjoyable. I look forward to reading the rest of these as soon as I can!

My personal Rating- Three Stars (and a half)

I’ve had this book my TBR for a while due to hearing some book friends rave about the series and this first book was quite fun! Was it realistic? No, probably not, but it’s a fictional spy agency, so who’s to say it can’t be that way? (I would have preferred a mention of someone flipping other another not have been mentioned, but elsewise, it was quite clean.) I smiled a lot during this short story and am definitely interested in reading the rest of the series.

Oh, my, that was four and a half stars’ worth of fun. Realistic? No. Corny? Yes. The whole thing was a wild, wacky ride that reminded me somewhat of Secret Agents Four , one of my all-time favorite kid spy tales. I loved Brent’s codenaming and his “Movie stuff, Emily, movie stuff.” The banter and interplay were perfect. It was also really nice to read something that wasn’t straight-up romance! I’m not sure how I feel about the total lack of any parental involvement in Emily’s life (I know, she’s nineteen, but my parents would still want to know that I’d just been in a gunfight!), but I got the idea there was more to her family situation than this story dealt with. There were some editing foibles as well, but as a whole this was just really, really fun. I got a free copy of this when I signed up for Perry Kirkpatrick’s newsletter, and even though I’ve always loved spy tales, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this quick, lighthearted read. And now I think I shall have to read the next one…

This started out perfectly! We were driving when I started this book and I didn't even realize we had crossed the state line while I was sucked into the story. A fast-paced and unending action fills this short episode like a novella. While fast and packed with layers of danger Red Rover, Red Rover is a 5-star winner in the rating department. Plus, Brent and his naming is so funny and quite lifelike - my brother is always renaming everyone every other day. The content is clean enough 12 up can read it though there is some slight violence. A perfect read short yet not too short read!

I read this last year and couldn't have loved it more if it had come with free chocolate.
It reminded me of a clean version of a show I absolutely loved (and stopped watching for content reasons).
This is an amazingly good spy/action story. It's especially exciting alternity for people who don't want secular/suspense spy stories anymore.

I can't wait until the first whole season is released!

The first book in the series is a charming introduction to Emily, who is as normal as normal can be, right down to scrounging up money desperately for college. Enter Brett, who is charming and funny- but something isn't what it seems to be.

(Level Two Classification: He's a spy)

Emily gets accidentally pulled into a desperate attempt to get an informant to safety despite all the bad guys chasing him. Brett has the skills to pay the bills, but Emily brings her own set of tools to the game: her excellent memory, careful observation, and her overactive imagination.

A hilarious and exciting first book that can't help but leave you wanting for more.

2023 reread. After a string of disappointing books, I was ready for a nice, happy reread. Not only am I enjoying this, but my husband is reading through it too! We have a new Emily Abbot fan, ladies and gentlemen.

****
Appropriate for: All Ages
Best for ages: 13 and up
Things you might want to know: Mild violence, spy action, non-graphic wound

It’s been far too long since I wrote a proper review for a book, I decided that this story really deserved a full breakdown. Yes, it was really good.
First off, I have to say that all of Perry’s books are hard for me to fit into age brackets. While many of them have the feeling that they are written for a younger audience, they are witty and interesting enough that I, at almost twenty-nine, really enjoy them. I feel like these are stories for people of all ages, at least as long as you’re an adult who doesn’t mind squeaky clean and doesn’t need movie-quality action in every sentence.
I’ve been hearing about this series for a while, I’ve wanted to read it so badly. In some ways, I’m glad I waited until when I did because I needed it. I needed something light, fun, happy, and with mystery. It is a perfect cheer-me-up type book. It made me grin like an idiot as I fell asleep because it was just fun.
Anyone who has watched older spy/mystery series will love this. It makes fun of many of the stereotypes in the movies while keeping a couple just for fun. I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t all those code names? They had me laughing.
One of the reasons I also like this book? It felt a little more realistic than your typical spy movie/tv series, yet was still fun and interesting. Setting it in Phoenix, Arizona? Brilliant and refreshing.
The characters were so cute and had so much personality. I can’t wait to get to know them more in the rest of the series. In fact, I went ahead and preordered all the books I could because I didn’t want to wait for long.
The faith element was very light. Emily obviously believes in God and prays and goes to church. It’s not a huge element of the story, but for the length of the story, it was just right. I look forward to seeing how this element progresses with the rest of the series.
I hope this series continues for a long, long time. I could read 40 or more novellas about this duo. Red Rover. Red Rover is perfect for those who love fun mysteries, squeaky-clean fiction, and feel-good reads.

This was definitely an entertaining read. It was also one of the best – if not the best – un-gruesome non-children’s detective book I’ve read in a long time.

While I was reading, I at one point looked at the percentage on my kindle and was surprised that I was already by 60%. I had been so emersed in the story that I hadn’t noticed myself reading.

I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

Title: Red Rover, Red Rover
Written By: Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick
Genre: Mystery
Recommended Ages: 13 & up

Introduction:
I read this story chapter by chapter as the author released them. It was quirky, fun, and I loved the spy elements!

Characters: 1/1
Emily and Nighthawk are perfect together! Their personalities are hilarious and their interactions are fun to read. I can't wait to read more about each of them!

Dialogue: 1/1
The dialogue is perfect in this story. There is serious conversation as well as humorous dialogue. Best of all, it seemed realistic, too.

Plot/storyline: 1/1
The plot is cohesive, but you can also tell the author intended to make this book part of a larger series without making it with a cliffhanger.

Overall writing quality: 1/1
I don't remember any grammatical errors or typos. Overall, the writing quality was well done.

Un-put-down-ability: 1/1
Since the author only released one book at a time, I had no choice but to put it down. I really didn't want to, however. I wanted to read the whole thing in one sitting.

Conclusion: 5/5
This is a wonderful short story that is really easy to read. It is engaging and fun, but still has some serious points in it. I highly recommend it.

Note: I received a free eBook from the author. I was not required to do a book review, positive or negative.

GAH! How do I even review this? THIS BOOK WAS SO AMAZING!!!

Honestly, even with all of the rave reviews, I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. It was just so fun and exciting and suspenseful! Definitely just the thing I needed to read on a dull, dreary afternoon. It started a bit slow, but once the action begins, there is no slowing down!

The rude customer at the beginning was super annoying, and I wasn't crazy about the times where a girl and guy were alone together, but it was all innocent.

I loved all of the code names and the spy stuff. The bantering between Brent and Emily was fun too. And, well, I could go into more detail about how much I love this book and why, but that would probably drag a lot of spoilers into this review. So I'll just say it was a thrilling, exhilarating story and well-worth the read.

This book easily won a full five stars from me... because seriously, who doesn't like/need a book that combines spy action, comedy, and coffee without any censoring needed?

And best of all... YOU CAN GET THIS STORY FOR FREE!!!

Just sign up here to receive a free copy, and enjoy the read!

2021 Reread: This book is still awesome the second time around! A boring evening was made exciting with this thrilling little book.

3rd read: Can't remember the exact date I read it, but it was early Nov 2021. (I put it down as Nov. 1, 2021.) Still love this series!!!

That was so much fun!

Yes, there are some unbelievable parts (like the fact that Brent was extremely obvious about being a spy), but I was more than willing to suspend my disbelief and just enjoy the ride. I am here for light spy stories and comfortable friendships full of banter and laughter! (I suspect that the main friendship will turn into something more someday, and I am all for that. But I am also more than thrilled that this friendship is allowed to develop naturally and comfortably. A+ character relationships!)

Overall, this was just a cozy, fun spy thriller that was the perfect quick and light read, full of jokes and excitement. Highly recommended!

Content: mention of a coffee shop patron flipping someone off, very mild violence (car explosions and mildly described injuries)

That was a fun read! I'm not usually into light-hearted, just for fun books - but this one was great! Yes, it was hard-to-believe and somewhat ridiculous, but that doesn't matter. It's the kind of book you can recommend to nearly any age and they could enjoy it.
And the characters! Emily and Brent were so much fun! Despite the unrealistic storyline, the characters are believable and the kind of people I like getting to know.
Content: Clean! No cussing, minor violence (nothing gory), and nothing else questionable to amount to anything. I've watched kids movies that aren't this clean.
Overall: If you need a good laugh; want a fun, quick read; want a book that you can enjoy with friends or even your kids; or just want a break from the typical spy story, this book might be for you!

I greatly enjoyed reading this book.
Clean, fast paced and easy to follow, yet at the same time still keeping you turning the pages until late at night.
Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick did an amazing job with the characters and made reading her story very enjoyable.
I will definitely be looking into the next book.
