Everything was building up to this moment. This volume was amazing!!! I wish I could give it 10 stars.
The emotional moments and decisions Thorfinn went through were handled so well. I still keep thinking about it. So many emotional, philosophical moments, so many moments of tension and suspense, yet so many hilarious moments, too.
This volume had it all. And it left on such a cliffhanger! I’m beyond excited to read the next volume.
Could be a 5 stars volume, if Garm didn't showed up on the last moment. He isn't that bad but at the same time, not that interesting as a character... and if he's there just for the sake of fight scenes, wouldn't be more interesting to see him fighting someone like hild instead of Sig? Oh maaan, that would be cool.
We also have Thorfinn's almost consumed by his fury... and was such an impactfull scene. I really enjoyed that he can't control himself, that means he's in need of much improvement as a person and that means more quiet moments in the future. Maybe with a new wise type of character.. maybe an old dude. That would be nice.
Oh, and I love Baldr! Such a sweet boy... I hope he manages to get away from all this mess.
There was a fair amount of action in here but i feel like it was mostly comedy, and i'm not disappointed.
Poor Thorfinn, always in a tight spot. Trying to be a good guy is a really hard job, especially if you used to be a really bad guy xD.
I probably said it before but, what a great manga. Everything about it is great, even the politics (and i hate them), but Makoto Yukimura has the ability to make it fun and entertaining for me.
I don't wnat to finish this review without giving praise to THAT scene between those two characters, very touching and eye-opener.
If only I could have used my life not for pursuit of Valhalla, but for something more, beyond even that... something greater.
I love love love LOVE how all the characters clashed in this volumen. And do I need to say that I also LOVE all the characters as well? Everything in this manga is so epic.
Just too much meaningless crap going on all around at the same time, which only manages to distract you from what should have been the central event, Thorfinn's encounter with Floki. Because it is drowned out with all that noise, the gravity of their confrontation has no room to properly resonate.
I guess I see Yukimura's intentions behind the way this battle is written: I suppose it is meant to be so chaotic and overwhelming to a) underline the inherent absurdity of the whole strife and warfare at large, and b) to truly test Thorfinn by pushing him to his very limits. But damn, does it all make for a tiresome reading experience... Well, at least the exasperation and weariness that those chapters evoke give you a sense of what it must feel like to be in Thorfinn's shoes.
The sequence I liked the most was a self-reflexive moment of a random soldier who realised the meaninglessness of the Viking lifestyle just as he was about to meet his death. Which is kinda telling: out of all this madness that's been taking place, the most gripping event turns out to be a peripheral cameo at the beginning of the volume that functions within the narrative only as a general comment on the margin of the main story.
But then I guess Yukimura's writing achieves what it was probably meant to achieve: it was good to see Thorfinn go berserk for a moment, even if the entire arc was too obviously designed to reach that point.
It was good to see him in such a state because he's become a bit too saintly for my tastes as of late. Which makes me ponder whether Yukimura doesn't elevate the Christian values at the expense of the Viking ones a bit too much. I'd really wish to see more criticism of Christianity as well in the future arcs, just for balance.

It seems that after each Vol. Thorfinn finds himself between a rock and a hard place as he has to make decisions on the fly, taking him to more and more crossroads all of this serves for his character development but it also gives me the impression that this battle is eternal!!!!! And I already want someone to finish off Garm, what an irritating character is Thorkell 2.0
Me aburre.
Amazing. I really don't like Garm but his wish to die by warriors' hands is promising. This volume was a roller coaster of emotions - from Thorfinn dramatically breaking the sword and keeping his inner promise to all the funny scenes that made me laugh. Vinland Saga has an amazing range of very well done characters.
Hild is just...AhHhh please understand Thorfinn. You both seized revenge, you both can learn with it.
so much great stuff here. slowly building up towards their arrival at vinland. theres such stuff here and there that i didnt like, particularly in how rushed thorfinn and gudrid are as a couple, but as a whole so much depth in its writing as expected with vinland saga.
