The Talisman- Molly’ Story by Eliza J. Scott is a 2019 publication.

A charming story about life, love lost and found, second chances and new beginnings-

Molly, Pip, and their three children move into a Georgian Farmhouse with plans to expand into the ‘glamping’ business. The move also brings her closer to her parents after her father receives a life altering medical diagnosis.

There are the usual family dilemmas, dramas, comedies and challenges of marriage, friendships, and small- town life to contend with, but all in all Molly is contented enough, until her world is spun upside down by an unforeseeable tragedy. As Molly struggles to put her life back together, karma comes calling, bringing with it a second chance at happiness for Molly and her family.

This is a delightful story filled with quirky characters and situations, depicting the understandable challenges of everyday life. While the characters are somewhat exaggerated for effect, the realities of raising children, realizing a dream, coping with illness and tragedy, enjoying friends and community, and coping with a few unpleasant residents, sounds a lot like real life.

Some of you will laugh, but it just goes to show that you don’t have to read heavy literature to learn something new. I had no idea what ‘glamping’ was. I had to Google it. Now I know why I’d never heard of it. Camping is not my thing- but if I were to consider it- glamping is the only way I’d want to go. So, you learn something new every day.

The story runs just a little too long and might benefit from a few cuts here or there for the sake of momentum. Molly’s temperament is a little over the top, bordering on ‘anger management’ territory, which couldn’t be healthy.

But, overall, I enjoyed reading about Molly’s life and her community, which is a little different, but often fun and humorous. Molly may have a hot temper, but she is a good person, and it was nice to see her rewarded for that, in the most unexpected ways. Molly’s love story is sweet and maybe a little magical too.

My Review:

The Talisman is the second book in the series and just as entertaining and skillfully written as the first. Although, while still often humorous and comical, it was a considerably more angsty read than The Letter, due to the untimely death of a beloved character and the subsequent grieving that followed. I adored all the unique and oddly endearing characters and was sorry to see the demise of the easy-going Pip, yet my heart continues to belong to the captivating Master of Mischief known as Jimby. Despite the tragedy of Pip, I frequently found myself smirking at their sassy quips and occasionally laughed aloud at their antics while reading.

Eliza J. Scott is a talented wordsmith and gifted storyteller who deftly laced lush details and cleverly amusing descriptions onto every page. Her characters were intriguingly quirky, oddly endearing, and individuals I would enjoy spending time with. Their teasing and exchanges of lively banter were loaded with sharp wit, irreverent humor, and wry innuendo. Lytell Stangdale appears to be a village generally populated by the eccentric, as most small towns actually are, yet this little village seems to have several extra special sets of the peculiar with an elderly pink haired gentleman who purchased a second-hand set of dentures from eBay and BTW, his carpets matched his drapes. Also of note was a wrinkly miniskirt wearing cougar with the nickname of Maneater; Lycra Len, who only wore bicycle clothing; the extremely fragrant Freida whose pungent aroma typically announced her arrival before she spoke as, she didn’t waste her time or fortune on soap or any form of hygiene; the fun-loving Jimby and his busy terrorist rooster; Violet the burlesque loving 50’s fashionista; and an obscene texting grandmother who blamed the predictive text setting on her phone for her suggestive messages, which often involved the vicar. I adored them all and will be eagerly awaiting a return to the village for Violet’s story. Please hurry, Ms. Scott, I’m renewing my passport just in case.

I truly scored with bonus Brit vocabulary words which included: croggy – to ride on a bicycle as a passenger; gormless – dull-witted or lacking intelligence; ratbag – an unpleasant or despicable person; ploughman's lunch - according to Wikipedia this is an “English cold meal” with bread, cheese, onions, butter, and some form of pickle with the possible additions of ham, green salad, hard-boiled eggs, and apple; grandad shirt – a button up that doesn’t need to be tucked in; diddlin’ – doing (which would have a sexual connotation in the US but not the UK); now then – hello. However, my most faithful resource, Mr. Google, was unable to assist me with the quaint terminology of knack-naked or skuttle-gob.

5☆ A beautifully compelling and poignant read that will simply melt your heart.

As soon as I saw the cover for The Talisman – Molly’s Story i just knew it was going to be a special book.

The Talisman – Molly’s Story is a beautifully compelling and poignant read that will simply melt your heart, have you giggling out loud, but then also shedding a tear or two.

From the first few pages in meeting Molly, she was my hero!
Even at the tender age of fifteen she was feisty, strong, ballsy, loyal, stood up for what she believes in, kind and generally a kick ass.

Molly melted my heart when she took on several older boys, when they was kicking seven bells out of a young gypsy boy.
Molly wades in all guns blazing and gave them a taste of their own medicine!
She then helps him up and takes Camm back to hers to dress his wounds.
Camm and Molly go their separate ways,
as he parts he gives her half a Tailsman pendant that has been in his family for years!

Flash forward several years and Molly is now married to Pip and they have 3 children.
They are about to embark on a glamping (posh camping) project adventure.
I've always wanted to give glamping a try, it looks so much fun!

We follow Molly and her family through her ups and downs, heartbreak, success, love, relationships, her friendship and family, her father's illness, being a mum again, happiness and drama.

I simply adored The Talisman – Molly’s Story.
It's filled with warm, quirky, strong, loveable characters you can't help routing for them to suceed.

The Talisman – Molly’s Story is a heart warming, roller coaster of emotions, engrossing, irresistible story that is simply
perfect for lifting your spirits.
It's a totally absorbing read that is beautifully written it had me completely enthralled.
Eliza had a fabulous compelling writing style that has a way of drawing you in and taking you into the heart of the story.

If you enjoy your women's fiction to be poignant, warm and funny, that is a beautifully written riveting tale that will leave you feeling warm inside.
filled with colorful characters you will treasure.
Then you won't want to miss reading The Talisman – Molly’s Story! It's A Must Read!

This is an poignant story, a rollercoaster ride taking the reader through the whole gamut of emotions as Molly's life from the age of fifteen to the present day is shared.

It starts with this feisty fifteen year old rushing to the rescue of a stranger who is being beaten up by a group of thugs. After frightening them off, she helps the injured sixteen year old Camm treat his wounds and he gives her a special gift - half of the Talisman, keeping the other half for himself and making her a promise. What happens between that time and the present, about twenty years later, is shared through flash backs and contemporary narrative. It is a delightful story of love and loss, ambition, dreams, family life and friendship as well as grief and romance. There are some heartbreaking events in this family drama but these are balanced by some humorous incidents and others that are truly heart-warming. Get ready for some hilarious, suggestive texts that need decoding to understand what the sender actually means, some very supportive friends, a tragedy, a broken heart and two romances that develop unexpectedly.

This is a brilliant contemporary story of a community with a whole range of characters from the pompous, lying wannabe elites to the down to earth, no nonsense, warm hearted locals. They are all well developed and believable and there are even some great dogs and a noisy cockerel, too! I found it to be an engaging read that I thoroughly enjoyed and have no hesitation in highly recommending. I enjoyed it so much that I now have the first book in this series, The Letter - Kitty's Story, on my Kindle ready to read!

I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

The book starts with a very promising prologue. The first chapter takes us 18 years into the future, but there does not seem to be a connection between both. Right away your brain tries to figure out how the two will come together and when. And it’s certainly worth waiting for.

I absolutely adored the story. It was heartfelt and heartbreaking at the same time. It was funny and sad at the same time. I also adored the vocabulary in the book. I learned a lot of synonyms that made me smile.

I am sorry that I did not read the first book, but I will certainly be on the next part.

Thank you, Eliza J. Scott and RachelsRandomResources.

When Molly was a teenager she helped out Camm, a young gypsy boy, in return he gives her half of a talisman. He tells her they will meet again in the future. Years go by and she forgets about this encounter, Molly marries and has children, she has a wonderful life and is definitely part of the community that lives and works on the Yorkshire Moors. A hard life but full of love and happiness, a life that is complete.

I have to say that Molly is a brilliant character, fiesty to say the least, able to lower the tone of most conversations at the drop of a hat and someone I think I would definitely get along with. She has a great group of friends and family around her, a tight-knit group that are an absolute hoot. This closeness is something she will need and rely on to get her through and will keep her going when her world comes crashing so unexpectedly down around her.

The story itself has a real great feeling of togetherness, that is in the sense of living and working together. A story that had me snorting with laughter at some of the random characters and their antics. For example, the fumble-fingered text messages then there is Reg the Rooster and his determination to name a couple. Mixed in with the friendly characters, there are a couple of undesirables who keep popping their heads up on occasion.

The Yorkshire dialect features in the writing of this author in conversations. It is something I really like in a book and it helps to keep the setting and the characters firmly in the “where they are”. There was the odd word that stumped me but luckily there is a glossary at the end.

From the outset, I knew that something was going to happen. I thought I would be prepared, but Oh my goodness I was so not prepared in the slightest . The author really did pull my emotions and left me with leaky eyes on more than couple of occasions. The sense of loss and grief really did come through and it made its presence felt. The moving forward in life for all concerned was another aspect that again the author did a great job with. She managed to capture the emotions, the changes to daily life and adapting to challenges as they appeared. Dilemmas, decisions, feelings, and family again played a very big part.

This is a story I really did enjoy, a story of family, friendship, life, love, and living. One I would definitely recommend.

As someone that has read the first book and quite enjoyed it, I was quite intrigued about this book, and I must say I loved it just like I did the first one. It was another compelling, relatable and emotional story. And although it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend you read both and have the full experience and get involved in the community and the characters.
The book follows Molly and all of the ups and downs in life. It's about family, love and loss, and it does show us some of Molly's past so we can fully understand her and connect with her because of her past and present. I loved that I was able to feel empathy with her.
But it's not only Molly I liked, all the characters that we get to met for the first time and others that we met in book one, that's why I recommend for you guys to read the first one as well. And get ready to go on an adventure with well written characters through a plot that will make you emotional, laugh, cry, fall in love, feel heartbroken… And everything is a perfect combination and made the book flow and be very enjoyable.
I won't talk about the book in any particular aspects because I hate spoilers and you guys should enter this book with your head blank so you can really enjoy the story and even connect with Molly and fully understand the struggles she will go through and all the happy moments and funny ones too.
Overall, this is the kind of story that will take you on an journey. A book about friendship, family and life in general.

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author and Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources blog tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

Readers who are familiar with Eliza J. Scott’s previous book, The Letter: Kitty’s Story will recognise the settings and characters here, but there is no need to have read one to enjoy the other, as both stories follow a different main character on their road happiness and romance.

I would describe the tone of this series as ‘cosy romance’, set as it is in a close-knit village community with an extended-family feel to all (well, most) of the neighbours. The ‘main crowd’ consists of Molly and her husband Pip, her cousins Kitty and Jimby, and Vi and Ollie, best friends to Kitty and Jimby respectively. Along with this adorable group of close friends are a surrounding cast of cute kids, caring villager acquaintances and eccentric elders. Obviously not everyone can be wonderful, and there is a particular family who I would certainly love to eventually get their comeuppance, but apart from them I would happily move to Lytell Stangdale!

Still, whilst there is sweet romance and strong friendship there must also be trouble and conflict to keep the story moving. In the previous book this external conflict came from Kitty’s deeply unhappy marriage to the odious bully Dan. In contrast, Molly and Pip have a strong marriage but are beset by worries about their teenage boys, the farm they have taken responsibility for and their new baby (never easy!). Then things go really wrong…

What I love most in these books is how the characters all pull together in a crisis and work through things as a team. It is the ultimate in wish fulfilment to feel the strength and warmth of love in the friendships and romances the author brings to life within these pages, and I would definitely read more from the residents of Lytell Stangdale (maybe it’s Vi’s turn next?).

Fans of gentle romance with a strong theme of family and friendship will really enjoy this series, and I’m sure I won’t be the only one who is waiting impatiently to see the back of the awful Aiofe!

‘You’re up to something, aren’t you?’ She narrowed her eyes at him. ‘I can tell. That’s what all this wining and dining’s about. Come on, you might as well spill the beans cos I’m going to find out sooner or later.’ She pursed her lips as she swirled the wine around her glass.
‘I don’t know what you mean! Can’t a bloke take his wife out for a slap-up meal on their anniversary without being accused of being up to summat? You’ve got a suspicious mind, you have, Molly Pennock.’ He wagged a finger at her.
She wagged one back at him. ‘That, Pip Pennock, is because I know you too well. This is the man who buys his wife a hoover as a gift. Or, worse, a couple of bloody pigs for Valentine’s day. This is not the man who arranges romantic evenings and a day’s clothes shopping.’
‘Don’t try telling me you don’t think the world of them pigs.’ Pip folded his arms across his chest and stretched his legs out onto the coffee table in front of him.

I was really pleased to be part of the blog tour for this book. I have read the first book of the series, The Letter: Kitty’s Story and absolutely loved it, so had very high hopes for this book, the second part of the Life on the Moors series. Whilst it is book #2, it can be read as a standalone book as it focusses more or less on a different character from the first one. I would though recommend that you read the first book also, as it was a very good read!

We are back in Lytell Stangdale, a little village on the North Yorkshire Moors. This book focusses on the character of Molly, and begins many years before when Molly was a young teenage girl. The story then moves to present day, where Molly is married to Pip and has two teenage twin boys and a young baby girl. Living on Withrin Hill Farm, the family is happy until tragedy strikes and Molly’s world is turned upside down. Heartbroken, will Molly ever be able to smile again?

I loved this book! As like the first book of the series, don’t judge a book by its cover! The cover, to me, makes me think it’s a cheeky romantic comedy, but far from it. This is a heart-breaking story of love, family and loss. The story grabs you at the beginning when Molly is younger and whilst you know this part of the story must mean something, you obviously don’t know until much further in the story. The story is set predominantly in present day, spanning the time of a few years.

Molly’s character is wonderful! She’s such a strong woman and I admire her so much for getting on with life when all she wants to do is curl up and never see anyone again. I love how I have an image of Molly in my mind of a typical farmer’s wife but then she opens her mouth to have a go at someone and the image turns into a swearing fishwife! The insults that have come out of Molly’s mouth have been hilarious, although some of them have made my hair curl they were that offensive!! Don’t be put off if you don’t like swearing in books though, it was all done in context with the situation and Molly’s emotions at the time.

Of course, the book does deal with a tragedy in Molly’s life and I have to admit I have been in tears throughout the majority of this book because of this. I would imagine it’s obvious what this tragedy is, but I won’t actually spell it out just in case you haven’t worked it out from the blurb. It is very sad, but very well written, adding in the right amount of all the different emotions which you would imagine Molly and her family go through. I do love how the book ends for Molly though, and gives an important life lesson that even in those desperately dark days, life does go on.

We also welcome back the other characters from the first book of the series, such as Molly’s cousins Kitty and Jimby and her friend, Violet. All the characters work so well together and complement each other perfectly! I shall also look forward to book #3 of the series where it focusses on Violet, as it will be interesting to see what her story involves!

All in all, this book was fabulous! It had me gripped from the first page and I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished! This did include reading it until the early hours, thankfully not keeping my husband awake from where I was sniffling into a tissue! If you haven’t read the first book, then you need to!! And then right after that, go and read this one, because this is a brilliant series of books. Don’t forget your tissues for this one though, you’ll need them! Highly recommended!!

Revisiting Lytell Stangdale is an unmissable opportunity. The Talisman-Molly's Story is the second instalment in The Life on the Moors series and is standalone.

Molly first met Camm when she was fifteen years old. Saving him from bullies, her reward was a kiss as well as half of a talisman with a promise they would meet again one day. Years later, she's trying to re-start her life after a tragedy, never guessing the boy she saved all those years ago would find his way back into her life and help her love again.

The poignancy of Molly's life-changing event is heartfelt. Ms Scott captures the emotions experienced by this otherwise, feisty woman as she comes to terms with her loss and the huge burden of responsibility she now has to shoulder to keep her childhood home, Withrin Hill farm running. For those who read Kitty's Story, you will be familiar with the strong supportive ensemble of secondary characters and they are definitely there for their friend as she slowly starts to pull her life back together with the generosity of kindness, love and friendship.

If you like a wild, rugged looking hero, Camm is the one for you. With Gypsy heritage, he has stoically weathered his fair share of sadness and tragedy too. Meeting up with Molly again, they have common ground to rebuild their lives and to make a future together.

Despite the tragic event plot thread, the narrative is upbeat, light-hearted and humorous. Molly and those close to her are relatable as they all deal with twenty-first-century issues. The narrative flows beautifully, littered with entertaining dialogue with Yorkshire words I'd long forgotten, but quickly remembered. A glossary for those unfamiliar with the charms of this English dialect is supplied, however, Ms Scott has written in a way, most words or terms are self-explanatory.

To sum up, a delightful story set in a lovely part of England. If you enjoy reading books with a small town, strong community backdrop, complemented by a colourful cast of characters, The Life on the Moors books are definitely must-read novels.

Loved this book by Eliza Scott, 2nd in the series. It’s the story of Molly, her family twin boys Tom and Ben, young daughter Emmie.

She seems a bit slow for her age I think. Her friends Kitty and Violet are always around for love and support, as well as Jimby ( Violet) and Olie (Kitty). Phoebe, Molly’s Labrador is always there for support as well, as most pets are! Molly and Pip are so in love, and one day when they are supposed to go out on a dinner date, he has an accident and doesn’t come home. Molly is devastated..She gets very depressed and doesn’t care anymore of how she looks or dresses. Her friends come to the rescue and take her fora pampering night. Molly is against this but once she goes she changes her mind and makes it a regular night out! Tom goes to help his uncle in Australia on his farm, so Ben and Molly are in need of help, so his gf Kristy has someone at her farm that can come to the rescue. Camm who is actually a gipsy that Molly knew as a young girl has come back into her life. Molly and Pip’s dream is to run a campsite on their property. Someone in the family found a camper/caravan type vehicle that was abandoned in the bush. It turns out it was Camm’s grand parents. Molly shows Camm the inside of it after it was refinished and the passion between Molly and Camm starts to heat up, and Camm runs figuring he’s upset Molly but it’s exactly the opposite. She has feelings for him again, ever since he came to work at the farm she has been feeling very passionate about him. In about a week he returns and they decide to take things slow, so they say. But they are in love and it all works out. The boys talk to Molly on Skype, Tom is in Australia and they talk every day same time. It’s Ben’s gf Kristy that’s sorted out the problem the sons are having with Molly being involved with Camm. Why shouldn’t she move on when the two boys have...Molly has done everything for them so they decide to accept Camm and let their mother be happy. A great story, love Eliza’s stories she’s a great writer! Looking forward to The Secret Violet’s Story!

Oh what was I touched by this emotional story!
I didn’t read the first book of the Life on the Moors Series but now I definitely will read this one. In The Talisman : Molly’s story we see the life of Molly and her family. Pip, her husband and Molly have great plans but when tragedy comes everything changes. Luckily Molly has wonderful friends and a family who she can count on. Those lovely characters feel like family when you read the book.

Molly’s story is about life and no that isn’t always beautiful, on the contrary, sometimes it is very sad. Eliza J. Scott has succeed in a realistic book with real people who have to struggle each day with pain or ups and downs. Yet this is not a dramatic book but it fills your heart with hope. Molly’s story is about grieving but it is certainly about giving the past a place in your heart. The beauty in this book is that Molly can be herself with fantastic people around here. This is a story with feeling…it made me cry, laugh and I love to read the next one of Eliza J. Scott.

I loved exploring the lives of Molly, Pip and the children. I loved the dynamic they had being relatively close in age due to when Molly had the twins - it was a lovely take on family life.

Unfortunately I felt the storyline of Pip was rushed and felt out of place for where it happened in the book. It was almost obvious to see where it was going from the flashback to Camm - he was clearly going to become a part of life at Lytell Stangdale and would become dear to Molly.

There seemed to be a lot happening at once with the death of Pip, one twin coming out and flying across the world and the other bringing Camm home to work as a farm hand. Her temper can also be draining to read, she blows up for seemingly no reason and people tend to look past this, especially Kitty and Vi.

Saying this however, I was love this little village and the people so much. I can’t wait to read book three and soak it up 🤍

Early on in this book we discover Molly's fiery spirit and strength of character.
Twenty years pass and she is a wife and mother, changing her well spent life for a different sort, when her father's health begins to slip. This is a story of family and love and second chances.
The characters become cared for friends. There is one family who seems above the law and I was rooting the entire time for them to get their due.
Tough situations arise and you will experience tears and heartbreak. Is there a way to come through and learn to live again?
I fell in love with the friendships and loyalty as well as the story.

The Talismaniis a story that I might not have reached for on my own, but I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read it. It was such an uplifting story of love, hope and friendship, and honestly, it was just the kind of story I needed to read right now.

Eliza J Scott knows how to pull at your heartstrings and keep you invested in a story. It didn’t take me long at all to fall in love with Molly and her friends.

I highly recommend checking this one out.

This was a really enjoyable read, and emphasises that no matter how bad life gets, there is always hope.

Molly is living the life of her dreams, living on a farm with her husband Pip, with their three children. They have good friends and a good life, until one day all that is taken away.

Molly can’t make sense of her loss, how life can just carry on when her world has ended. her grief is all encompassing and it is left to her friends and her children to help her through the worst period of her life.

A light and uplifting read with a beautiful moorland setting. The Talisman is part of the Life on the Moors series, so I expected the happy ending, but that did not make it any less satisfying. The slow start took some patience, but it helped to deepen the emotional impact later in the story. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy stories of love, loss and healing, with a few tear-jerking moments along the way.

Beautifully written

This is such a wonderful but heart breaking book.Molly and Pop's love and their wonderful family, so enchanting, normal and familiar. When tragedy strikes, it makes you feel the heart break. So when love comes again, you know it should be grabbed with both hands.

Great series set in Yorkshire

I'm enjoying this series by Eliza Scott. Reading them is like putting on a comfy pair of slippers. As the friends go through happiness and sorrows of everyday life, we get to know the characters well. The Yorkshire setting is perfect for depicting life in a village, and for adding a bit of humour. An enjoyable read.

Totally loving this series it's really helping me to forget what we are all going through at the moment with lockdown and giving me a little bit of normality for that I'm grateful I'm actually reading the books back to back

Another great story

I loved every minute of this book.
I really related to Molly
I cried, I laughed but most of all it helped me with my grief.
Thankyou Eliza looking forward to reading violet's story
