I was really pleased to be part of the blog tour for this book. I have read the first book of the series, The Letter: Kitty’s Story and absolutely loved it, so had very high hopes for this book, the second part of the Life on the Moors series. Whilst it is book #2, it can be read as a standalone book as it focusses more or less on a different character from the first one. I would though recommend that you read the first book also, as it was a very good read!
We are back in Lytell Stangdale, a little village on the North Yorkshire Moors. This book focusses on the character of Molly, and begins many years before when Molly was a young teenage girl. The story then moves to present day, where Molly is married to Pip and has two teenage twin boys and a young baby girl. Living on Withrin Hill Farm, the family is happy until tragedy strikes and Molly’s world is turned upside down. Heartbroken, will Molly ever be able to smile again?
I loved this book! As like the first book of the series, don’t judge a book by its cover! The cover, to me, makes me think it’s a cheeky romantic comedy, but far from it. This is a heart-breaking story of love, family and loss. The story grabs you at the beginning when Molly is younger and whilst you know this part of the story must mean something, you obviously don’t know until much further in the story. The story is set predominantly in present day, spanning the time of a few years.
Molly’s character is wonderful! She’s such a strong woman and I admire her so much for getting on with life when all she wants to do is curl up and never see anyone again. I love how I have an image of Molly in my mind of a typical farmer’s wife but then she opens her mouth to have a go at someone and the image turns into a swearing fishwife! The insults that have come out of Molly’s mouth have been hilarious, although some of them have made my hair curl they were that offensive!! Don’t be put off if you don’t like swearing in books though, it was all done in context with the situation and Molly’s emotions at the time.
Of course, the book does deal with a tragedy in Molly’s life and I have to admit I have been in tears throughout the majority of this book because of this. I would imagine it’s obvious what this tragedy is, but I won’t actually spell it out just in case you haven’t worked it out from the blurb. It is very sad, but very well written, adding in the right amount of all the different emotions which you would imagine Molly and her family go through. I do love how the book ends for Molly though, and gives an important life lesson that even in those desperately dark days, life does go on.
We also welcome back the other characters from the first book of the series, such as Molly’s cousins Kitty and Jimby and her friend, Violet. All the characters work so well together and complement each other perfectly! I shall also look forward to book #3 of the series where it focusses on Violet, as it will be interesting to see what her story involves!
All in all, this book was fabulous! It had me gripped from the first page and I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished! This did include reading it until the early hours, thankfully not keeping my husband awake from where I was sniffling into a tissue! If you haven’t read the first book, then you need to!! And then right after that, go and read this one, because this is a brilliant series of books. Don’t forget your tissues for this one though, you’ll need them! Highly recommended!!
