Praise for other titles in the Paul Noble range: "More than I ever managed in five years of French at school." (Tom Meltzer, The Guardian)
"I seemed to absorb the phrases taught, without even consciously trying, and quickly felt confident enough to make my own sentences." (Penelope M. Walsh, Canary Wharf Magazine)
The follow-up to Paul Noble's first course on Mandarin Chinese is a very powerful Audiobook that will allow the listener to make fast progress on the language. The main strength of the second book are grammatical constructions: modal verbs, conditionals and shi-de constructions are building blocks on which pretty complicated sentences can be constructed. I really like the way the author introduces and explains new concepts and then insists on them over time throughout the book, resulting in a very effective way to memorize it. There's so much repetition that needs to be done that it also helps get the tones right over time. The only weak point of the book is that it is not so strong in terms of vocabulary, which becomes at this point the main limiting factor in being able to have simple conversations in the language.
A really, really useful book. The clear and straightforward methodology of building on previous knowledge and vocabulary and using repetition really helps to get basic grammatical structures into your brain! Handy to listen to whilst out on a walk (and no doubt sound absolutely bonkers while I repeat sentences over and over again out loud!).
These audiobooks are just so good. Paul Noble and his team really drill the grammar into your head (without ever actually talking about grammar as such). Not sure where to go now to progress.
