Talking About Text

Rate this book
Teach students the value of discussion with this professional guide that outlines purposeful talk, why it is important, and how it increases comprehension. Talking about Guiding Students to Increase Comprehension through Purposeful Talk instructs teachers through model lessons to demonstrate effective approaches and research-based strategies that help develop the way that students think and voice their ideas about texts. With an in-depth look at the behaviors that enable learners to talk in a constructive manner, teachers will design their own lessons that are aimed to graduallyrelease responsibility to their students. Enhancing student critical thinking and overall reading comprehension, this resource supports the development of skills that students need to be successful in college and career.

About Shell Education
Rachelle Cracchiolo started the company with a friend and fellow teacher. Both were eager to share their ideas and passion for education with other classroom leaders. What began as a hobby, selling lesson plans to local stores, became a part-time job after a full day of teaching, and eventually blossomed into Teacher Created Materials. The story continued in 2004 with the launch of Shell Education and the introduction of professional resources and classroom application books designed to support Teacher Created Materials curriculum resources. Today, Teacher Created Materials and Shell Education are two of the most recognized names in educational publishing around the world.

This is a good companion to Maria Nichols book, Comprehension Through Conversation. We read this as a book study and had several good conversations about the hows and whys of encouraging students to practice having real dialogues. We talked about how the student and teacher roles shift as we begin to facilitate this kind of discourse.
