But Sam gets a bigger surprise when that same man hires him to prove his innocence, and Sam follows a convoluted trail of clues to discover who really killed Barry, and wanted to frame the agent for the crime!

I don’t know where the problem came about. It could have been in the proof reading, or lack of proofreading. The story itself was fine. Actually, it was a great plot; as well as great characters... but for some reason it just wandered off into way too many things that had absolutely nothing to do with this story. If you are just looking for a love story, then you won't mind all of the useless information; but if you are reading this because you want a mystery, then you may find yourself turning pages without reading all of the unrelated sections. The first book in this series was not like this at all. Too bad because David Archer is a really good writer.

Great!

The second book was good once again of course, tho I will critique it by saying these long drawn out paragraphs of the male character revealing feelings and such, men just don't do. Especially over and over, so that made it drag a little. But the story was a good one and of course I'm loving how the characters 'little family' is forming. I'm also surprisingly enjoying the books concentrating more on the story than wasting half a chapter on occasion with details of their sex life. It has been refreshing and allows these books to be clean and a 'family friendly' read...thanks!

Book 2 in the Sam Prichard series sees Sam open his Private Investigation business. Almost as soon as his ad is run he gets his first case. A local singer has gone missing, and Sam is engaged to find him. The singer's body turns up, and the missing person hunt becomes a murder investigation. As a backdrop to this the relationship between Sam and Indie develops further, the reader also gets to discover a couple of Sam's hidden talents.
Again this was another quick read, I can't decide if this was a short book, or a long novella. The characters of Sam and Indie are definitely growing on me, but sometimes they do seem to be too good to be true. As a means of pure escapism these books hit the spot, nothing is over complicated but there is the frustration with some of the grammar and editing. Quite good Summer reads though.

Beautiful love story

I really enjoyed this book. This writer is very talented in moving the topic of the story along in a way that it is like real life. The characters are so multidimensional. I loved how the story stayed on the murder but also delved into the characters where they were your best friends. This author has a great way of telling a story. I can't get enough and just keep getting the next novel. There are no cliffhangers so they don't have to be read in order, but it gives you background on the next book.

Mystery/Romance.

One thing for sure, author is good song writer too.
Enjoyed the first book in this series, it was a very easy reading. This one is in the same category. Love story is like they say, "if it's too good to be true, it is." Story and characters well thought, like the songs. Rescue cat, little girl is cute and touching. Who the killer was, finding the answer made it fun to read. But hacker was little unbelievable. Will wait awhile before I buy the next book.

Short book at about 160 pages. Almost a novella rather than a novel. As stories go, I didn't enjoy this as much as the first Pritchard adventure, The Grave Man. Not sure I will bother with the others in the series.

Those readers who enjoy a mystery but don't want the extraneous violence, sex and swearing will enjoy Archer's writing style.

I could copy and paste the review I left for The Grave Man and stick it here. It's an entertaining detective story; one you could find in any crime show. The characters had good chemistry and they both played their part in solving the case. If I ever find myself on a long bus or train ride, I might download the next book to read. They are good for passing the time.

I like this book even though the budding romance of Sam and Indie.... I guess it was a nice change to read a happily ever after for the main character. But not everyone was happy.....

This is a 2015 book and is the second book in David Archer’s Sam Prichard series. It is a fast-paced light reading detective story. It is also a quite heartwarming book about love, courtship and family. The setting is in Denver, Colorado in mid 2010s. This is the beginning of the Sam Prichard series. In this story, Sam has just known his future wife Indie Perkins for two weeks. Sam, a newly medically retired cop, has taken Indie and her young daughter Kenzie (who were both homeless at that time) into his home for Indie to work as his housekeeper. This is also the book where Sam decided to set up shop in his garage as a private investigator. I find David Archer’s PI book to be different than most PI books I have read in a few ways. First, unlike most PIs who are hated and shunned by the police, Sam is an ex-cop that has a really good working relationship with his former colleagues in the Denver PD and they are very happy to help Sam out. Second, unlike most dysfunctional alcoholic or depressed hard-boiled PIs who are loners, Sam is a very normal, calm, and emotionally mature man. The book has more warm domestic and family scenes than most modern PI books. Third, the language is very clean. There is no graphic brutality, foul language or sex scenes. It is kind of like a PG-13 version of a modern PI novel. One complaint I have about the book are some broken hyperlinks. The story has quite a few sets of song lyrics. After each one is a “Click to Listen” link. Unfortunately, when I tried to click through on my kindle, they are all bad links with a 404 error.

The story is the first case Sam has as a private investigator. It starts out as a missing person case. When Barry Wallace, the lead singer in a Denver band called Step Back Once, went missing for a week, his fellow band members hired Sam to find him. When Sam asked his ex-partner Dan Jacobs of the Denver PD to show him recently recovered unidentified dead bodies (John Doe cases), Sam was able to identify one of them (through a unique surgery mark on the body) as Barry. However, whoever murdered Barry has cut off his head and his hands, which were all missing. It turns out on the day of Barry’s disappearance, Barry was on his way to tell his agent Jimmy Smith that he will not accept a very lucrative recording contract with Sony because Jimmy demands that Barry has to give up his band and work with a new band for the contract. As Sam started investigating Barry’s death, he got a call from Samantha Harris, who is a former lover of Jimmy and a good friend of Barry. Samantha told Sam on the date Barry disappeared, she got a threatening voicemail from Jimmy warning her not to interfere with Jimmy and Barry’s business negotiation. A few days later, Samantha received an envelope with a lock of hair with some skins attached. Sam took the evidence and gave them to his former colleague and good friend Karen Parks in Denver Homicide, who was in charge of the Barry case. With those information, they were able to get a search warrant on Jimmy’s house. On his extended estate they found a shallow grave and uncovered Barry’s head and hands. The police then arrested Jimmy for murder. Jimmy claimed he is innocent and hired Sam to find the murderer. Sam also believes Jimmy has been framed because all the evidence seems to come together too nicely. With Indie’s help, Sam did a lot of background research of all the suspects and were able to eliminate them one by one. Indie turns out to be a social media whiz and a super hacker. She has built a computer program called Herman, which she uses to hack into various government and corporate databases to pull court records, police records, phone records and other information Sam needs. During the course of the investigation, the two fell in love and it ends with Indie agreeing to marry Sam. Ultimately, Sam were able to find out it was Jimmy’s wife, Sheila, who, in a moment of jealous rage (thinking Samantha was trying to rekindle her relationship with Jimmy), killed Barry in an accident turned homicide.

Death Sung Softly by David Archer is my third Sam Prichard Mystery. I've really liked them. This one I give four stars and recommend it.

It is the first novel I've read that I actually stopped and thought, "This is a musical". Keep in mind that I am reviewing both the ebook and the audiobook. The lyrics are in the ebook, and they sing them in the audiobook. There's also a link in the ebook so you can click the link, go to David Archer's website, and listen to the song reproduced there.

To give you an idea how unique this is, I read over 130 Doc Savage Adventure Novels before I reached my teens and my actual reading love leans more to science fiction than adventures. So there's at least 5 more decades of ambitious reading since and this is the first I thought…. "This book is a musical." I suppose that is a comment on our time and our technology than anything else.

In this mystery Sam Prichard formally opens his Private Investigator business. On his first day of advertisement he gets a missing person job. The fellow is a musician and the rest the musicians want to find their missing lead singer.

David Archer is an excellent professional writer. When I say that I mean he is not an "F list" Indie writer who can't afford cover art or an editor. His books are lean, fast, and full. You get attached to the characters and care what happens next. With David's particular writing voice, or Mikael Maramore's reading voice in the audiobook, Sam Prichard seems rather laid back, easy going and casual, all the while continuously moving toward the conclusion of the mystery he's investigating. Meanwhile, he is also growing in the personal relationships with those closest to him and his friends.

He's not so casual that he won't put the fear of law enforcement into someone's face without flinching. I do enjoy these books.

I've seen blurbs that say that Sam Prichard is the "next Jack Reacher". Who is blowing that smoke, or why is a mystery to me. There are similarities with Prichard and Reacher as they both solve injustices and both were military police officers at one point. There the similarities grow very thin.

Reacher is a hard nose military MP trained to bring in the worst of military rogues, like Navy Seals gone serial killer. A really tough guy, ready to take on criminals not having superpowers or being X-men mutants.

Prichard always wanted to be a local cop and joining the military for police training was just on the schedule to get where he wanted to go. His military police training didn't extend beyond standing guard and waving cars in and out of a military base. He did have a diverse and reputable ten-year police career before being shot and injured. The injury forced him from his beloved occupation with 100% police retirement. It was over a year of rehabilitation and it appears Sam's life will never be entirely free of a walking cane.

So far in the Prichard novels I've read he has become a Private Investigator quite by accident and run into his assistant, Indiana, in a similarly arbitrary way. Together they get their mysteries solved. But nothing like Jack Reacher novels I've read. Reacher is intense. Prichard's novels are more mentally challenging puzzle solving while building the character's lives in Prichard's circle.

Try a few of his books. They are quick reads and are relatively inexpensive. At least compared to Peter V. Brett's latest short story.

A solid sequel in the Sam Prichard Series

When Kindle was giving away a ton of free books in the spring of 2020, the first book in the Sam Prichard Series, "The Grave Man" was among the titles I snagged.

Eventually when I got around to reading it I wondered what took me so long.

This entry in the series surrounds the disappearance of the lead singer of a local band that the newly minted Sam Prichard, Private Eye, takes on in his maiden voyage as a true blue investigator.

While slightly trope filled, I really dug how Archer took what could be just another cliche filled character type and gave him some unexpected depth and overall lovability that I find ex-cops turned investigators rarely ever successfully have.

For this entry we saw, while slightly predictable and cliche, the dynamic/relationship between Sam and his live in-nanny/assistant blossom into more than what it was initially, it was so damn wholesome I couldn't help but smile throughout.

But that wasn't the only emotional reaction I got from this adventure with Sam. There were plenty of instances I found myself straight up laughing out loud at some of the dialogue between Sam and the cast of characters in this go 'round, especially as the transition from straight investigator to stand in lead singer unfolds.

I'd definitely recommend this series to anyone who's a fan of crime/mystery fans and anyone who just loves some fun, but shockingly pretty tame crime novel storytelling. I will definitely be continuing this series soon and can't wait to see what Sam and Indie are up to next.

“Death Sung Softly”, second in the 'Sam Pritchard' series, continues the adventures of the world's nicest P.I.
Almost immediately after taking out ads for his fledgling business Sam is asked to investigate the disappearance of a popular singer with a local band.
At which point we discover not only that (a) Sam was once in a band, (b) wrote his own material (mainly Country), and (c) has the voice of an angel (well, maybe not that good).
At least the band has a new vocalist!
Meanwhile, back on the home front, things are hotting up between Indie and Sam.
It's only been a few weeks but he's seriously considering that they should grow old together (it turns out that, rather being old enough to be her daddy, the age gap is a mere eight years).
It's an unusual series in that it is largely about Sam's home life with the investigative stuff tacked on.
The plot, insofar as the missing singer is concerned, is run of the mill but is played with a straight bat and a good sense of humour.
The literary world needs more P.I.s like Sam.
4 Stars.

This was a pretty good book And the second installment in the series that he’s going to encourage me to keep on reading. I like Sam and I like Indy as well and McKenzie. The plot in this one was a little bit more simple than in the first book but it was still very engaging and interesting. It really had you guessing about who could’ve been the person that killed Barry. Of course in the end we find out. It’s also fun to see Sam interact with the band as the relationship between him and Indy grows. Kind of interesting to see other characters that we will probably see more of in future novels. I like that they’re short and easy and fun. Not a lot of heavy lifting and thinking involved. And that suits me just fine. I feel like it’s getting to know the characters and the plot and it’s taken at a nice level pace

I so enjoyed the simple joie de vive that permeates this book that it was done in less than a day. The storyline was fairly simple although the Missing Person case that became a Murder Investigation was quite cleverly constructed and goes to show how human relationships can go disastrously wrong. Compare that with the development of Sam and Indie’s relationship, and you can also see what joy relationships can bring to people. This now reaches out to parents and a slightly disabled cat.
It is an easy read, requiring little of the reader except that they sit back and enjoy it, which I certainly did!
The words of the songs which Sam becomes involved with are pretty good as well. Another career looms for him, and as he is having so much success at the moment, I wonder where it will all end!

Good premise and good mystery. A little too much time spent on the mushy stuff. A little time set aside for daily life and character-building is good, but this was over the top and a little too perfect. His girlfriend is a little too domestic for the character. She is supposed to be some cyber geek. But then she is the perfect female male fantasy companion in every way: perfect house keeper, perfect cook, perfect looks, etc… a little too perfect. And very little time was spent on showcasing her intelligence and cyber prowess. Don’t get me wrong… some authors go to the other extreme and make their characters too dysfunctional; I wouldn’t want that either—just something a little more human.

I liked the lyrics to the songs though. They were really good.

The detective story is spoiled by the Sappy unrealistic love story between Sam and Indie. They are far too happy. Sam is either the smartest PI ever other just plain lucky. Suspects just confess with no pressure or leverage applied. The digital copy I received from the Archer website had do many typing errors and Grammer mistakes that it made it hard to read article time. (spell check would have caught most of the errors). There was even an obvious plot error but that would be picky. In all the books is quite readable but needed a bit more edge to the writing to make the story more believable.

I listened to the audio version of the book. Since the plot involves a detective investigating the disappearance of a band's lead singer, it's no shock that there are references to the music played by the band. It's a little unconventional to actually have the songs appear in the audiobook. Given the audio is geared for voice rather than music, the quality of the music isn't all that amazing. But credit to the audio production team for their unconventional approach when it came to including what I can only guess to be original tunes in the book. I was a little surprised when there was no postscript explaining the source of the music.

Death Sung Softly

Book two in the Sam Pritchard series finds Sam opening up his own Private Eye Firm, with Indie as his Secretary and Computer Investigator. Sam is hired by a Local Rock Band to find there Lead Singer. Sam while investigating the disappearance of the singer fills in for him and he's a big hit. Sam realizes that he loves Indie and they get engaged . Sam meets Indie s mom and her Spiritual Advisor, Sam s mom meets Indie and her daughter and quickly bonds with the girl. The storyline took an unusual turn and had a very surprising ending.

I like my PIs more rough around the edges. This reminds me why I stopped reading Robert B. Parker's "Spenser" novels after Susan Silverman became a regular, the PI became too mushy and sappy. If I wanted a sissyfied lovely dovey story I'll read my wife's romance novels. I will attempt to read the next book in the series "Love and War". If the Romance between Sam and his love interest continues to fill most of the book I will look for another PI to read.

The story of the PI and his housekeeper come lover come wife is ok but it is not a mystery. Although the part about looking for who killed Barry is quite good, the schmaltz is too much. The ex police officer, becoming a PI and then discovering that he sings like an angel is,too much. And the housekeeper is too too perfect. That said I bought the three books, I’m off to,read the third but will skip the schmaltz. I know it starts with a wedding!

I feel it was a let down after being excited from reading the first book in the series. It just got way too corny for me and I did not like the story nor the conclusion. I feel if there’s a top five things that an author should not do when writing, one of them should be not have an entire song in the books which in this case includes the chorus and the hooks. Not only did he do this he did it at least four or five times throughout this short book.

Gripping

After stumbling across the Noah Wolf series and loving those books thought would give another series a go. Simply put I have not been disappointed. The story keeps you guessing from beginning to end. If you love a good mystery this series can't be recommended enough. I'm off to start book 3!!

An easy read with more focus on the romantic side rather than the Private Investigator side of the characters. The story had some interesting twists but not very complex or developed. Would like to see more development of the case and PI work than their personal lives.

An okay book but not as strong as the first one.

Good, Clean Mystery

This was my first book by David Archer. It was a quick, good read that kept me interested and wanting more. Best of all Mr. Archer didn’t feel the need to resort to foul language to fluff his writing. His vocabulary was up to the challenge without expletives every few sentences.

A good crime mystery

Another good crime mystery seeing this isn't the first book in the series things were talked about that had obviously occurred in the previous book which was difficult for myself to get past I felt like I had important gaps in my knowledge of ongoing things, so my advice to anyone who wants to read this is do but read book one in the series first.

Just plain stupid

What a boring book. I read the first and second book hoping it would get better. Written at about a fourth grade level. I skipped most of the book just to get it finished. The book was free, so I guess I got what I paid for.
Made a note not to read any more books by this author.

Jealousy makes people do stupid things

Great band super singer then he was gone, until body parts were found, Sam Pritchard was hired to find him then to find the killer, assisted by Indie, a few twists and red herring a fork in the road that takes us to reasons why and the who or does it a good mystery I enjoyed this book

the writing is somewhat adolescent. The romance between Indy and Sam is boring, teenage, pubescent and young. Sam is an ex cop with a detective agency and in this book, lead singer for a garage band. this is my third and final book by this author.

What a wonderful book. I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately my kindle is the basic model and I couldn't download the songs . But the lyrics brought a tear to the eye. Once again a gripping thriller and read in a day as I had to finish even at 1.30 in the morning. Thank you David .
