Born in California, Caryl McAdoo got to Texas in time to celebrate her first birthday. As a Dallas seventh grader, she remembers a homework essay on ‘What will you be doing in 2000?’ Looking into the future, she saw herself as an inter-galactically famous author, streaking from planet to planet signing books.

She laughs, “But I didn’t start writing again until the late ’80s, then was so blessed to find the DFW Writers’ Workshop in ’93.”

So four titles in 2014.

Book three of the historical Family Saga HOPE REBORN debuted in January 2015 to start off a whole new year with eleven new titles planned. THE PREACHER'S FAITH comes in February, Caryl's first contemporary in Red River Romance series. THEN THE DELUGE COMES, volume two of The Generations, follows in March.

Since 2014, she's published over sixty new books, averaging over seven new titles a year through 2020. She completed the 'Texas Romance Family Saga' with a total of ten novels, plus several 'Texas Companion Books'!

Plus, she's eight books into a second series, the 'Cross Timbers Romance Family Saga' and debuts a third New Beginnings saga's book one WAGONS WEST in November 2022, her fifth book for the year.

Also known as Grami, she adores twenty-five grandsugars, and she and O’Pa—her high school sweetheart and husband of fifty+ years write together. She’s dedicated to advancing God’s Kingdom through her novels, praying her story gives God glory!

Caryl loves to share her testimony, pray, and praise and worship Him; He frequently gives her new songs.

She believes all good things are from Him and that her books will minister His love, mercy, and grace to her readers.

Irving, Texas remained her lifelong home until 2008 when she and Ron followed God’s leading to Red River County in the far northeast corner of the Lone Star State. A story of faith and trust in the Lord

What a beautiful story, which follows Hannah through the trials and tribulations of leaving Texas behind, and moving to Nigeria. It's a story of miracles and salvation. I loved it!

Based on a noble calling, Hannah Claire’s Wilderness is the story of missionaries, Hannah and David. With a powerful opening scene, it grasps your attention and drops you into the midst of an emotional struggle to save the life of a child.

Both Hannah and David have gifts straight from the Almighty. I was surprised when I discovered that Hannah is only eighteen years old. With the strength she displayed in the opening scene, she originally seemed much older. Her youth became apparent later on in the book as she tended to throw temper tantrums anytime David went out to preach on the street. Her fear for David led to screaming, crying, and begging David to end their mission in Nigeria.

There were several redemptive qualities. Hannah was in a strange land, with strange people. She takes on a daughter and is trying to help David with his ministry. Anyone would struggle in the face of so much adversity. Hannah’s growth and perseverance created an excellent character arc that I had to appreciate. From young and rash to still young but much more willing to leave her troubles in God’s hands, Hannah Claire’s Wilderness is sure to teach a firm lesson in trust and faith.

Surprise! Having read another of the author’s novels, I really expected this to be a historical romance, as in the 1800s or so. What Caryl McAdoo serves up in Hannah Claire’s Wilderness couldn’t have been further from my expectations. A very young, freshly married couple heads to Nigeria to preach the gospel. Reflecting the Jesus movement popular in the 1970s, David and Hannah praise loudly and often; expect unbelievable miracles as if ordinary; and also expect God’s financial blessings. While some of this makes me slightly uncomfortable, McAdoo also tackles gritty life problems including human trafficking, martyrdom, adultery, and honesty. Trusting God, obeying Him, praising Him and overcoming fear with meditation and Scripture are key themes, as is forgiveness. I must say, the themes are so relevant to today that I applaud the book much more than I anticipated when I started. McAdoo has given me much to chew on for some time to come.
Favorite quotes:
“That’s between you and God though, I can’t be your Holy Spirit.”
“...either God was on the throne in control or He wasn’t. She had nothing to worry about.”

I had mixed feelings about Hannah Claire's Wilderness, but at the end of the night, I was glad I read this fictional missionary story.  On the one hand, Hannah Claire's attitude really annoyed me.  And on the other hand, should she have really been on the mission field?  I have an opinion about this: If you're called to missions before you marry, you shouldn't marry that person unless they share your call.  Why?  You don't want to put yourself in the position of having to choose between God and your spouse.  If you're called after you marry, it should be something you're in complete agreement on, not just acceptance of.  God will call you both.  It may take time.  So when Hannah and David are on the other side of the world from home, in 1970, without the closeness of family or the conveniences of home or even the assurance of safety, and Hannah really doesn't want to be there...it's both of their faults, really.  But Hannah is so young and immature and fearful, and David has his head in the clouds.

I also had some theological challenges, though they were pretty minor.  For example, Hannah is miraculously able to speak the languages of the people around her, permanently it seems.  I believe God can totally do that.  I also come from a Pentecostal background, where people do speak in tongues.  And in the early years of my denomination, we sent missionaries on the field expecting that they would be able to communicate the gospel through speaking in tongues. And then we started sending them to language schools.  It seems that while God can totally do that, he often works through teachers, relationships, and a crazy amount of hard work instead.

That being said, as much as Hannah annoyed me, at the end I was glad to have seen her wrestling and her struggle, because the transformation is so real and evident.  What else did I like?  That kid is adorable.  I liked seeing God's miracles in the form of supernatural language ability, dreams and visions, healing - we forget that God still works that way.  I think he does so even more where people will be receptive to it!  I was convicted by the time David (and later Hannah) spent in prayer, and the result it had on their lives.

There was one other thing that bothered me.  It had to do with how Muslims were described. The thing is, it was very accurate to how most people would have felt in that time and place.  People were hurting because of what radicals who identified as Muslims had done, and they lived and spoke in fear.  But my Muslim friends are the people of my heart, and what I read could be hurtful.  What I read about what Muslims believe, too, was accurate to what people thought (and many still think!), but not in line with what many Muslims believe. Hannah has one potentially positive encounter with a Muslim woman, but I would have liked to see more to counter the stereotype that this terrified young woman believes.  Could this story have been written in a way that was faithful to the historical aspect of it but left more room for redeeming that view?  Perhaps.  But I wouldn't expect most people to jump all over this or be bothered by it.  I have a trained eye for this kind of thing.

Overall, yes, I would recommend this book, even with the things that were a little off-putting.  Hannah's attitude annoyed me, but what about my own?  What do I need to give up and trust God with?

I received a review copy of this book; all opinions are my own.

This has been a wonderful story of a young couple who become missionaries and travel to Nigeria. I loved reading about the land and the exotic animals there. I can't imagine being young like Hannah and following her husband to a foreign place. It was a place that was hard to live at times . What a joy it was for Hannah and David to be able to save a five year old girl named Adaolisa. She was definitely a gift from God. They young girl had been through so much and now she found a new beginning with Hannah and David.

It was amazing how God provided a way for Hannah to understand the language that Adaolisa spoke and it warmed my heart to read how quickly they bonded. I remember watching a show a few weeks ago about a man in Africa that made sandals out of tires. What a surprise when it was included in this story. It is not an easy task, but the workmanship was unbelievable .

The trials that Hannah and David endure are at times hard to read. What would it be like to be in a foreign land knowing that the enemy was out there trying to destroy you? Spreading the Word of God will take lots of prayer as the couple seek to spread the Good news. I could picture men surrounding their camp ready to cause damage and then angels appear to cover them in peace and safety. Hannah wants to leave but David assures her that God will protect them. Will Hannah trust God as they do the work they have been called to? The thing that really struck me was how young they were and answered the call on their lives. I know at eighteen I would not have had the courage to do what Hannah and David did.

As David goes out into the streets to preach, Hannah is a little fearful for his safety. She is constantly saying they should return to the states, but David is not ready to go. I loved reading how Hannah was tested in her faith and how determined David was to follow God's calling. The story is well written and delivers a great idea of what it was like to be missionaries in the 1970s. The author intrigues readers with her knowledge of Africa and the cuisine. Hannah is at times discouraged but what she really needs to work through is her trust that God will keep them safe.

I loved reading how the Lord worked in Hannah and David's life and showed then that He would provide their needs. There are many lessons in the story that touched my heart. We all struggle at time with trusting God. Hannah will find herself learning that God is in control. When you have a call on your life like David you obey and trust God to keep you safe.

" I know now that being obedient is the way we can show God how much we love Him."

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Author McAdoo is a natural storyteller. It took me one paragraph, that’s right one, to become invested in this beautiful story. I have read many of the author’s works but this one by far excels all of them. It is the second book in her “The Revivalist Trilogy” but could easily be read as a stand alone. I loved it and would definitely recommend it for many reasons. It captivated me. I opened it up and could not put it down.

The characters are realistic. They are vividly described and so well rounded I forgot they were characters and deemed them friends. I wanted to have tea and chat with them. It was Little Adaolisa was adorable. The author has transferred her knowledge and love for children onto paper effortlessly.

Not only has she shown her love for children, but the author’s love for Godis apparent in this novel also. In her books she writes “Praying my story gives God glory” and she does. Using scripture, inspiration, and life lessons this book is an encouragement to readers. It will help draw readers in closer to Abba and give them things to ponder.

Topics relevant today are packed into Hannah Claire’s Wilderness - depression, God’s guidance, danger, obedience, hope, love, hearing from God, His timing, parenthood, violence, spreading God’s Word. Humor is sprinkled in to give readers relief from such heavy subject matter.

I absolutely loved the beginning of the book and how Adaolisa and Hannah Claire communicated. This was so inspirational and faithfilled. Bravo, Ms. McAdoo. It is so refreshing to know a novel is Christian and not need a magnifying glass or to guess.

There was one thing I missed, a very minor one, and that is a Discussion Question Section. This is a perfect book for a church reading group or even a group of friends. I highly recommend this book. It is a page-turning, engaging fiction book that will take you on the Mission field with David and Hannah Claire. It earns a 5 out of 5 stars from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but I was under no obligation to write a review. These are my own, honest opinions.

As I picked up Hannah Claire’s Wilderness to read, I was not sure quite what I was going to think about the book. However, I have to say the characters and storyline pulled me into the book. From the very beginning when Hannah woke her husband up to tell him they had to go get their daughter (and then was able to speak the native language fluently) through all the ensuing drama and excitement in the book enthralled me. I found the story miraculous and realistic at the same time.

From being able to speak in tongues to making deals to speaking with the people around them, divine intervention constantly follows them. Adaolisa adds an element of levity, sincerity, and faith to the story second only to her father, David. The belief and faith in God flow throughout the pages of the book. Yet at the same time, the realism of human nature and typical responses are present as well.

Another fact I love about the book is Hannah’s willingness to follow her husband and live as a missionary. She demonstrates extreme faith and courage throughout the book. Yet, she also shows normal human emotions of doubt and a desire to go home to the familiar. She tries new things and along with David accomplishes incredible things that are only possible through God.

I have to say my absolute favorite experience was when Hannah’s parents and in-laws arrived to visit and Jocko, the monkey, exited the car with them. So if you want a book to make you laugh, cry, shake your head in amazement and more, check this book out for yourself. I received a copy of the book for my fair and honest review.

I really liked the premise for this book and so I was quite excited for the opportunity to read it. Having said that though, I was surprised that I found myself struggling through it. The faith element was very high which I appreciated, but I think it fell short on the realism for me and I think that prevented me from connecting with the characters as much a I was hoping.

I have heard some amazing true stories of people speaking in tongues and discover they are speaking the actual language of the people around them. Although I have never attended a church where people speak in tongues, I believe that God can use people in that way and it can be an incredible testimony. I struggle however with a person suddenly being able to speak the language of a different people and it becomes a permanent new skill. I think something about that concept cheapens the effort countless missionaries have put into learning the language and customs of people to reach them for Christ.

I admit that I am a person who likes a lot of realism in what I read. I will also admit that I believe that can sometimes be a flaw of mine because it prevents me from enjoying the true nature of fiction. Honestly when I take the realism factor out this wasn't a bad story. It was fast-paced and encouraging. So while this wasn't one of my favorites, I believe it's strongly due to personal taste and not the author's storytelling abilities.

The life of an African missionary is a backdrop I have yet to read in Christian fiction outside of biographies based off of real missionaries of the past. I have to admit this was a very unique spiritually charged book that really opened your eyes to spiritual warfare among a very different culture than we are used to. The book's plot really moves quickly and the emotion is very relatable. I know that in other cultures especially where Christianity is suppressed the Lord uses different means sometimes than we are used to in which to speak such as dreams- I have heard missionaries speak of this. I felt it was really a needed book to give us a glimpse into missionary work in this area especially, what challenges missionaries face on a daily basis, and how they truly have to live moment to moment listening to the Lord's voice. It reminded me how many blessings and opportunities I miss out on by not listening for that voice on a moment to moment basis. I liked how the author portrayed the characters that had human struggles like all of us because as we know, God can use anyone to do anything if they will just simply obey. I would suggest this for those who are interested in missions or those looking for a unique Christian fiction read.

When newlywed Hannah is called to be a missionary with her husband in Nigeria she has no idea what she is about to face. Within her first week in the country she gains a daughter and the ability to speak the local language, however this is just the start of her journey. Will an 18 year old girl from Texas and her husband be able to survive in war torn Africa, or will the powers of evil and fear keep them from spreading the word of Jesus?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. The Author, Caryl McAdoo had me hooked from the first page of this book. I could not wait to finish the book and found myself telling people about the book before I even had the chance to finish it which is something that I rarely do. If I had read this book at an earlier point in my life I may have been skeptical about the physical appearance of angels , but at this point in my life I wonder how many of us have overlooked the angels around us on a regular basis. I am looking forward to the next book in this series, Caryl McAdoo has a masterful way of bringing the story to life.

"Hannah Claire’s Wilderness" by Caryl McAdoo is the second book in the "The Revivalist Trilogy".

This is a love story and it does have plenty of kisses and passion in the pages, but it is written in a way that doesn't cause the readers to be embarrassed or ashamed.

In this story promises and visions comes true but not in the way that was imagined.

This books shows that God really wants us to trust Him in all things. I know this book is fiction but I really felt God was talking to me personally because it was a story of overcoming fear. I love the fact that God can and does use fiction to change a person's perceptive and makes them a better follower of the Lord's way. Although, Hannah's fear isn't the same as mine, this story showed me that God just wants me and you to surrender to Him, everything.

This story is also about forgiving and receiving second chances.

Thank you Caryl McAdoo for a great book that if a reader allows it words to penetrate deep inside their souls will change their outlook on what it means to totally surrender all to Jesus and be lead by Him.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

Hannah finds herself in the wilds of Africa, following her husband, David as he answers the call to be a missionary. After all it is just for two years that they will be in Nigeria and then back to the states and family. Hannah is led by God to a slave auction where a five year old orphan girl was being sold and they outbid all the bidders to keep her from sold to some other man and possibly becoming a sex slave. Now Hannah finds herself an instant mother and she loves this child fiercely as a true mother would. David finds lots to do as well as being a street preacher and Hannah works a couple of days in the week. They also do a little exporting and raised extra funds. This allows them to meet different people there. Hannah lives in constant fear for Davids life, she wants to trust the Lord but has a hard time placing her husband completely in God’s hands. She also longs to go back home but will not do so until the visa for her adopted daughter comes through. There is victories and disappointments along with added dangers as they strive to do what the Lord has placed in their hearts. As you end this book, you are looking forward to the continuing of their story in the next book.

Hannah Claire's Wilderness is book two from Caryl McAdoo’s series, The Revivalist Trilogy. It amazes how well Miss McAdoo is able to have the talent to continuously to come up with some great and unique stories. I love her vision of inspiration and faith in all of her books and this one is no different.
Hannah Claire’s Wilderness tells the tale of Hannah Claire and her new husband, David, goes to Nigeria as missionaries in the 1970s. Which leads them to a young orphan, Adaolisa. It is heartbreaking to see how horrible children and people of this Nigeria were going through. I can not imagine the horror and violence they had endured. I did like how Hannah Claire held on to her faith to continue.

I give Hannah Claire’s Wilderness four and a half stars. I look forward to the third installment from The Revivalist Trilogy. I recommend this one to readers who enjoy clean and inspiring fiction.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Hannah Claire's Wilderness is book two from Caryl McAdoo's series, The Revivalist Trilogy. It takes place in the 1970s. I was taken right into the action on the first page. Hannah took on a daughter and helps her new husband David with his ministry. He is always going out on the streets to preach. Hannah worries about going to Nigeria. This missionary trip leads them to a young orphan, Adaolisa.

Hannah, who is only eighteen years old, who is very mature for her age. She is faithful and is very courageous. She and David aren't afraid of doing new things.

Her book is so inspirational, relatable, and isn't preachy. Her characters are well developed and relatable. Their struggles seem real. Her storytelling is very unique. Her book is full of inspiration, trust, and faith, but isn't preachy.

This is my first time reading a Caryl McAdoo's book and it won't be the last. This book will make you smile, laugh and cry.

I have become a fan of Caryl McAdoo books. I discovered her books last year and they all have great storylines and characters. Hannah Claire's Wilderness is book 2 of the Revivalist Trilogy series.

Hannah Claire's is a GREAT story of Faith and learning to trust God's plan rather then our own. The time is the 1970's and Hannah reluctantly goes with her husband David to Nigeria for a 2yr Missions Assignment. God places many life changing situations in their path, especially Hannah's. The most life changing thing that really shows Hannah to trust God is that Hannah becomes a Mom to a Nigerian Orphan. Becoming a mom to an orphan shows Hannah that God's plan for being in Nigeria, even during a time of horror and violence, is a great need. Hannah comes to realize that she is right where she needs to be!

I LOVE how their faith is strengthened in this book. The book is very faith filled, even though a Fiction storyline. GREAT BOOK! I look forward to Book 3 of the Revivalist Trilogy!

Hannah Claire’s Wilderness

Following the leading of the Lord in their lives, Hannah and David go to Nigeria as missionaries. Not knowing the dangers they will face while there, they must walk by faith, only Hannah struggles with her faith as she longs for home in Texas.
Having not read the first book in this series, I was slightly confused at first as to what was going on. This second book apparently picks up where the first left off, but once I realized that, I was able to quickly get caught up in this story.
This story of trust God and being willing to surrender to His plan with faith that he will see you through was a very enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Hannah Claire’s Wilderness

Hannah and her husband David are missionaries in Nigeria. She has a dream about a baby in danger but she is actually five years old. Hannah does get homesick for Texas where her family is and keeps hoping to have a child of her own.

Hannah is young. Such a strong person and loves working with her husband in being a missionary. I loved that Adaolisa ends up with a monkey for a pet. Had a cool name of Jocko.

This is part of a series but could be read as a stand alone. But it is always good to read all the series.

An interesting book that was not at all what I expected. Listening to the leading of the Holy Spirit, David and Hannah Claire each find themselves in very unexpected situations. As a story about missionaries, faith plays a huge part and the results of that are quite openly recorded. I loved the way they used what they had available to help fund their work. Hannah Claire's struggle with fear and learning to leave everything in the Lord's hands resonated with me as a lesson we all can learn!

Once again, Ms. McAdoo has delivered a great story. This sequel to John David’s Calling is full of adventure and had my attention from the first page. This story tells of God’s power and what he can do. I liked the way that Hannah grew in her faith, especially toward the end. Adaolisa was a delight and Mum and Pop wonderful. I really liked this book and would recommend it.

We follow Hannah and David to Nigeria as Missionaries. There are a lot of miracles and a dialog of daily family life of Hannah. Interesting story line but I just had trouble liking Hannah who the story is told through. I really like Caryl's books but this one is just not what I expected.

I liked this story but it was not my favorite from this author. It was interesting to see how Hannah Claire was able to do some things when she and John David made it to Africa but I enjoyed the stories in Texas better. I did like how they became part of Adaolisa’s life. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Another great book

Such a great book. This book covered David and Hanna when they were missionaries overseas. There is so much about trusting God in this story. If we could let go and stop living in fear and listen to God's voice and follow him in obedience our life would be so much better. Such an inspiration to read.

Fantastic Story

When you read this story you get so drawn in. The power, glory, mercy and love of God is powerful. There is suspense, doubt, love and showing a person what being obedient to God can do! Yes it's fiction, but it is so very believable it is real live! Don't miss reading these fantastic story!
