Simon Fayter #3

Simon Fayter and the Titan's Groan

Rate this book
In a fit of genius (and cowardice) Simon has left his friends frozen in time, awaiting their deaths. Meanwhile, he explores the ancient magical city of Tarinea in hopes that he might find a way to save them. If he's lucky, he might find another bloodstone while he's at it. But Tarinea isn't quite what the travel brochures said it would be. It's a place of dark magic, ancient mysteries, old enemies, brutal competitions, of monsters and mayhem, of silent sorcerers, and foul intentions. To get through, he will have to trust a strange new friend, survive a mysterious teacher, and face the dangers of the Titan's Groan...

I’ve read a few of Mr. Bailey’s books but this is the first in this particular series that I’ve read. It’s actually Book 5 in this series. Not having read the preceding books had me at a disadvantage as there were references throughout this book to previous characters and storylines that I was unfamiliar with, however, I still thoroughly enjoyed the story and would still recommend it to anyone looking for a book with a great plot and colorful imagery, plus well fleshed out characters. The author is well read and scatters references to other books and authors at the beginning of each chapter. I found it fun to read each reference and ponder why he had inserted that particular reference. Some made perfect sense, others had subtle innuendo, and still others I didn’t catch the meaning but they showed a well rounded author with respect for other authors both in the past and in the present who had something that had resonated with him.

Simon Fayter has been time traveling with a turncoat loaded with switches that each have some kind of power. The only problem is, most of them have no label and Simon has no idea what will happen when he turns them. In this story, he has landed in a new land while leaving Drake, Tike, and his other friends behind in a dangerous situation. He feels guilty but he knows he had to continue on in order to make the situation work for the better for all.

His travels now land him in Tarinea. Everything is strange to him and he feels out of place. He ventures out to find out if he can make sense of where he is and he is captured along with an old man, a woman, and Tav, who is strangely familiar and someone he had seen on the side of a hill right before he was captured. They are given the choice of dying by torture forever or life beyond pain, but no guarantee how long that might be. He and Tav both opt for life beyond pain. They are immediately taken to a tall cylindrical pit, where it is quickly apparent that they are to fight for their lives. This is only the first of a number of exciting adventures as Simon and his new mate Tav try to figure out how to make it out of their predicament and Simon tries to rescue his friends. I look forward to reading more of these stories and now I want to go back to the beginning to see what I missed. I give this book a thumbs up and suggest that it be read by anyone looking for a great adventure with lots of imagination! Well Done!

Wow! This series just keeps grabbing me and pulling me in full force! Titan’s Groan is the third instalment in Austin J. Bailey’s Simon Faytor series. Simon is one of the most powerful wizard’s in the known universe. Except at 13,he has barely touched his potential even knowing he is supposed to be “all that and then some”. Yet, he never gives up! Which is good because he wrote that as one of his 4 pledges on his Codex which defines his moral code. If he breaks or ignores that code, bad things happen to him.

At the end of book 2, Simon is coerced into having to make a no win decision that could be fatal to one of his friends. In order to give himself TIME, he freezes TIME there, and inadvertently jumps back in TIME, several hundreds of years to a world that no linger exists in his time! Why does the magical turncoat take him there. If you do not know about the turncoat, you REALLY need to read Books 1 & 2. They are exciting and lead you to this book.

Join Simon as he meets new people, good, evil and in between. This instalment fills in a lot of back information, but also hints to the future plus information needed in Simon’s immediate future (although he’s in the past - confusing, right?). I strongly recommend this book, well, this series. It is truly fun to read. Simon tells the story as his autobiography (in first person POV of course) and speaks directly to the reader through the use of footnotes/endnotes. Love them! I received this copy as I requested to be part of the launch team. I’m sharing my honest review voluntarily. It really is an enjoyable and eventful story.

I am late in my review, but like always, I love Austin J. Bailey's books. There was so much going on in this one. For anyone thinking about reading this series, never skip to the first chapter. There are great things that happen before you even really start reading the book.

I was really proud of the growth of Simon's friends. I was really rooting for Drake to finally get the chance to grow. He's wanted it for so long. Although, for a minute I thought his little experiment had gone horribly wrong when Simon met up with him in Tarinea. Jeez Austin J. Bailey, don't scare me like that. I know time travel is always questionable, but I couldn't have handled it. Simon needs his friends. He really is kind of lost when left to his own devices.

Of course, Tessa had struggles with the time travel thing. It must be really life threatening to be friends with Simon. Especially since he has lucky days and unlucky days, plus the fact that sometimes he just does something without thinking. Even if you are having a lucky day, you should always think before you do something, especially when it involves the vest.

Speaking of the vest, one of the highlights of this series is finding out what all the knobs do. I wouldn't be able to come up with as many things as needed to write about something like that, so the answers are always surprising. Sometimes a knobs purpose is revealed and all I can think is that somehow this isn't going to turn out well.

This series is just fun. There are so many moments of humor mixed in with action and age appropriate drama. A highly recommended series.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the 3rd book in the series about Simon Fayter, the precocious boy genius, his amazing turncoat and his very loyal group of friends who once again give us a story full of adventure, magic, plots that go haywire and a weird sense of humour which keep the reader quite spellbound, not knowing what to expect from one page to the next. This time round Simon, Leto, Tessa and Drake end up on Tarinea and in the past and once again it seems they are there for a purpose. This book is a fun read from beginning to end which can be enjoyed by readers of all ages though young readers many not quite appreciate the sarcastic wit as much as I am sure grown ups will. Austin Bailey writes for readers of all ages and I am one of the 'old' people who think they are still children who he writes for. Thank you for keeping us young at heart Austin. I also loved the quotes at the start of each chapter, some of which have a lot of depth to them if one were to give them a bit of thought! Another piece of the soul stone is found but many more still need to be recovered so onward to our next adventure!

This such an enjoyable series- and I strongly recommend this book. The storyline is good, the characters are well-developed and there is a lot of “extra” information thrown in. Design to expand the reader’s knowledge base with references to “”classic quotes” from other books, authors, poets, historical events, movies and music. It is apparent that the author loves writing these books and wants to entertain as well as educate young people.

In the story line, we follow an adolescent male who learns that he has some magical powers and ends up mixed up in situations beyond whatever he would have ever expected. He has to face many situations in which there is no easy way out and in the process grows and matures. I would compare this series to the Pendragon series and I hope many people who enjoy that series read this one also.

I already want to know what happens next to the characters who I have come to care about. I hope that he finishes the next book soon!

Austin Bailey is brilliant with this third installment of his Simon Fayter adventures. Wonderfully full of danger and weirdness, as well as fun and magic abound. Great read with fascinating characters growing into their magic as well as themselves. Can't wait for the next book and will re read these first three again and again in anticipation.

The adventures with Simon Fayter keep getting better!
The story continues with Simon and his loyal group of friends in trouble. Simon leaves his friends frozen in time as he goes to the magical city of Tarinea in the hopes he can find what he needs along with another bloodstone and to save his friends.
Simon has trouble learning to trust new friends, but he must in order for him and his friends to survive.
Come along on this adventure and enjoy Simon’s wit and sarcasm and weird sense of humor as he tries to learn and grow into the wizard he know he must become.
This story unfolds with many twists and turns that will keep you turning pages
I believe you will enjoy this adventure, I know I did!!

The entire Simon Fayter series is very good. My children and I really enjoyed the later books in the series, although all of them are quite excellent. Good clean fun, creative, exhilarating storyline; age-appropriate writing for pre-teens, tweens, and early to mature teens. I even enjoyed these greatly as an adult, especially the later books. Simon Fayter as a character has a bit more sass and attitude than the Magemother characters, which is appropriate I believe... and it speaks well to the teen crowd... but my pre-teens LOVED the series. Highly recommended.

Interesting read

Simon lands himself in an interesting situation in this book. He finds himself stuck in the past, and sold to a dark wizard. He learns more about how his coat works, and runs into unexpected people as he tries to find a way out of the situation he left in the tomb of Rone. In the end he learns a hard lesson about leadership.
Looking forward to the next installment!

I enjoyed this book overall - I like how it picks up right where the previous story left off, it makes the series feel more like one long story instead of a series. I don't know if I loved or hated

Sometimes these kinds of books start to get redundant and the plots are the same but Simon keeps having grand adventures that are different in every book. I’ve been listening to the audiobooks, which are narrated by the author. Usually I don’t care for that but Bailey does an excellent job and he adds bloopers at the end which made me laugh.

10/10 recommend.

Much was learned in this edition of the series. But most of the action seemed just like mindless running around in circles. At least it didn't end in a total cliff-hanger like the last volume, but the ending was far from final.

Plot twist

Thus gives a greater understanding of Rone. Thus had so much unexpected plot twist and such a difficult decision for Simon.

Rone

This is a good read. The story escalates as unknown becomes known. This would be a good read for teens and young adults.
