4 stars for illustrations, 2 stars for writing, evened out to 3 stars overall
This book is beautiful, the texture, the illustrations, even the endpaper! It reads like a rambling collection of comments, disjointed and interspersed with emails. It could have benefitted from some kind of character connection or vague plot, who is Michi? I think we're supposed to know because she gives nothing away, not even her location in the world. But oh, those beauteous collages!
If Bridget Jones wrote a poetry scrapbook this would be it, obsessed with weight loss and body image, and quick to fire of cutting comments about others clothing choices while describing her own anxiety about full-length mirrors and wishing for third world dysentery to aid her weight loss.
High point: Describing unihemispheric slow-wave sleep in some animals including birds, dolphins and seals
Low point: Backhanding Brittney Spears under the guise of describing her perfume.
