This box set includes the first three novels in the Shadows in the Water series: Shadows in the Water, Under the Bones, and Danse Macabre.
Meet Louie Thorne. They didn't kill her — and they'll soon regret it.
When DEA agent Jack Thorne's house is stormed by vengeful drug lords, both he and his wife are shot dead. Only his daughter Louie survives — by using a terrifying power that defies reason.
Piecing together a life in his absence, Louie embraces her gift and her rage under the force of a single need: revenge.
She will destroy the men that took her family. No matter the cost, no matter how many bullets, she won't stop until justice has been well and truly served.
Kory M. Shrum has published over thirty books including the bestselling Shadows in the Water and Dying for a Living series.
She also hosts two podcasts: “Who Killed My Mother?” the true story of her mother’s tragic death. And A Well Cared For Human - a mental health and self-care podcast.
You can listen to these shows for free on YouTube or your favorite podcast app. She also publishes poetry under the name K.B. Marie.
When not writing, eating, reading, podcasting, or indulging in her true calling as a stay-at-home dog mom, she can usually be found under thick blankets with snacks. The kettle is almost always on.
She lives in Michigan with her equally bookish wife, Kim, and their rescue dog, Max.
Love this series and can’t wait for the next one - hope there is a next one !! Louie keeps growing as a character , captures you till that last word of the book and leaves you wanting more .
Shadows in the Water Series Boxset (Lou Thorne Books #1-3) contains the first three books in the Shadows in the Water series by my new favourite author, Kory M. Shrum. I have come to the conclusion that Bookbub has a lot to answer for, on one hand it is a fantastic way to ‘find’ new books/authors to read- but on the other hand I end up spending my entire yearly book budget in a matter of a few months lol. But if it weren’t for Bookbub, I would never have found Ms. Shrum’s books, which would have been a real tragedy, because she really knows how to weave a riveting tale. This is an awesome urban fantasy with so much going on- in a fantastic way. With plenty of action, adventure, mystery, danger, a different realm aspect, suspense, tension, intrigue, drama, the mafia, serial killers, agendas, ‘hunting’, team work, friendship, family, investigation, time factors, gripping scenes, intense developments, twists, romance, and so, so, so much more- you really need to read it to fully appreciate this gem of a series as I doubt my words can really do this series the justice that it deserves. Louie Thorne is the daughter of assassinated DEA agent, Jack Thorne. He, along with her mother, were murdered by a drug cartel when she was just a young child- his death scarred her, in more ways than one. She has bided her time honing her skills, becoming a force to be reckoned with- one so powerful that the ‘bad guys’ will never see her coming. In the process of wreaking revenge, she builds a terrifying reputation that will strike fear into the hearts of her enemies- and it’s her secret ‘ability’ that gives her the upper hand- and gives this whole series a completely unique and addictive quality. So much action. With a lot of violence. And a huge helping of adventure. Resulting in a serious book addiction- while also set this book/series apart from others, and this is a book ‘high’ that will be hard to beat. I developed this addiction to Ms. Shrum’s stories when I stumbled on the Shadows in the Water series -> picking up one book, which then led to two, which then had me devouring the whole series, back-to-back (11 books) in a matter of days. Now I am on tenterhooks, excitedly anticipating the release of Book #12, which can’t come quickly enough for my liking lol. Each book in this series follows on from the previous one – with each instalment having its own ‘story’, but also adding to what has come before, thereby building a much bigger picture along the way- so the series really needs to be read in the correct sequence, to fully appreciate it- and prevent any kind of confusion. The books are available individually if you wish, as well as in Boxed Sets- which, again, is really great value for money. The Series consists of: -Shadows in the Water (Book #1) -Under the Bones (Book #2) -Danse Macabre (Book #3) -Carnival (Book #4) -Devil’s Luck (Book #5) -What Comes Around (Book #6) -Overkill (Book #7) -Silver Bullet (Book #8) -Hell House (Book #9) -One Foot in the Grave (Book #10) -Blood Rain (Book #11) -First Light (Book #12 -> coming soon) If you love highly original urban fantasies with plenty of action and adventure- then this is definitely a series you will want to sink your teeth into- but be prepared to develop a (Kory M.) Shrum addiction! Happy Reading…
I write very few five star reviews. Perhaps that's unfair given the way that Amazon's ratings work for authors. My thought has always been in the interest of helping other readers find the best fit in reading entertainment for their money.
This box set of stories is absolutely worthy of all the praise that I could muster. Not only in the imaginative rendition of a "shadow walker " tale, but in the restraint that the author exercised in keeping this super powered character human. Lou is damaged goods, but striving to grow. The struggle is what makes us all human.
The dialogue is solid with fair effort to making individual characters have unique voices. Action sequences make sense. The world-building is first rate. I want much more, and hope to see More M. Shrum well represented on Kindle Unlimited, my preferred vendor for e-books.
I love this series. Shrum has done an excellent job at world building and her characters are complex people who grow and change over the series. The main character, Lou Thorne, is a young woman with an unusual power. She can transport herself and others anywhere in the world through the dark. As a child, her parents are murdered in front of her. She grows up wanting to avenge her parents. She is on a crusade to ride the world of evil persons, those who would hurt others, especially women and children. She uses her unusual power along with a large arsenal and an unbelievable way of disposing of bodies. She is loyal to her friends and has mixed emotions about her paramour (it's complicated). There's lots of action and violence, as well as a little sex mixed in. I'm looking forward to reading Books 4-6 in the next boxed set. Highly recommend!
As is the case with most series, the 6-book series will be most enjoyable and understandable if you read Books 1-3 first, then read Books 4-6 Bundle. That way you will understand the relationships among the main characters and how they got to the present moment. You'll also know how Lou Thorne became a one-woman hit squad against drug dealers and traffickers, the checkered past between Lou and Konstantine, some background on La Loon and Jabbers, how King became one of the best PIs in NOLA, and how the relationship among Dani, Piper and Lou developed. There is lots of violent action but it's usually the bad guys that take the heat and end up meeting Jabbers.
So good! I couldn't put it down. I read the first three books in less than a week. This series has a bit of everything; mystery, thrills, chills, murder and a dash of paranormal too.
I've just finished the first three and I am not ready to say good-bye to Lou and her friends just yet. So even though I am over my book budget for the month, I went ahead and bought the next set of three. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Lou has figured out the world isn't so easily divided into good/evil and needs to find a new path forward. What will she do in a world that's not as black and white as she first thought, but a million shades of grey?
I think the stories would have been a really exciting read, BUT, language, language, language. I was sooo turned off by all the foul language I couldn't even finish. The continuous use of the Lord's name in vain was so off putting I could never recommend these books. Foul, irreverent language does not make a story more realistic but rather shows a lack of intelligence in the one writing the book. There is a plethora of authors out there who write exciting stories without the use of such language. As mentioned earlier Shrum's stories had great potential for being exciting thrillers but the foul language was a total turn off.
I read a lot. I have been doing so since I was a kid. I've settled into a favorite genre but sometimes the books get to similar and I feel I'm reading the same thing over and over. This series is the perfect blend of all my favorite elements, great, strong female characters, supportive male characters, justice, a bit of fantasy and just a touch of romance without resorting to smut (which has its place in the world, no question). I will be reading this entire series, I'm hooked.
Wow what an unusual but brilliant storyline I was absolutely enthralled from start to finish. At first I thought it was your run of the mill thriller but after a couple of chapters I realised Lou was no ordinary girl and I was in for a wild ride ,I loved all the main characters and is it wrong to worry that Jabbers will go hungry without Lou feeding her murderers and drug mules I'm off to download the next instalment
Wonderful revenge tale, with a touch of superpowers! I really enjoyed these books, nice plots and lots of action. There are a few injuries that seem very similar in places but I've read many a spy book which literally have the same wording in different books of injuries and these were renowned and "big" named authors, so I have no problem with these books at all!
These 3 books are the beginning of a fantastic thriller with a bit of fantasy. Lou Thorne has some special skills and a huge vendetta against the men who killed her family. Full of interesting characters, A great plot line, with twists and turns you won't expect, this bundle is not just your regular thriller. A great read which will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning the page.
Well, well, well! Talk about an exciting story - and the pace kept up through all 3 books. Lou Thorne is as enigmatic a character as I have ever read and come across. The action keeps coming at you and, just when you think you know where the story is going, you are pulled in a completely different direction - sure kept my attention up.
You might as well go ahead and buy the box set because you're going to be hooked in the first chapter of the first book. I couldn't put it down and now I am sad because it's over! I hope we will see more of Lou Thorne. What a great series! Thank you Kory Shrum for a great read!
Louie Thorne’s life and special gift starts when she disappears and then shows up coming out of a pool with injuries miles from her home. The death of her parents and her Aunt Lucy stepping up to care for her really impacts how she lives the rest of her life. The anger she has for losing her father puts her on the path of vengeance and the books follow this course. Lots of suspense and action. I highly recommend this series.
I love this series. The characters are outstanding in the way each draws the reader into their individual stories and blends them into the main plot. This author has amazing insight into what makes people tick. Great read. I couldn't put it down because I had to know what happens next.
What an amazing beginning for a new series. Lou is more than "magic", she's something you've not seen before! No "cozy" coffee shop or talking familiar, but a kick ass gal who knows how to defend herself, those she loves and takes down the bad guys. Lou is my HERO!
Nice to have a bundle so you can stay in the story. The characters and storylines are complex and we'll developed. Quite original too! The characters, Lou, King, Piper and Konstantine are quite likable and interesting to learn more about.
Good book, held my interest, wanted to read all three..would have liked more information on her ability, where she inherited from or whatever.still a good read, interesting characters.
It was a page turner for sure. There was so much action and surprises. Look forward to more Louie adventures and hopefully romance between her and Konstantine. Still curious as to why she chose him when she appeared in his bedroom as a young girl but vanished just as quickly too.
She's a beautiful vengeful orphan who's a crack shot and has other world access superpowers teamed up with hard bitten normal humans destroying vicious criminals bouncing around picturesque locales. Not for me.
What a conflicted and extremely gifted revenge assassin! So many truly fabulous characters that populate this foray into the possible psyche of a difficult childhood and a mobster. Of course what is not cool about sliding in and out of shadows.
I loved all 3 of these books. I honestly couldn’t put them down. I found it refreshing to read about a female “executioner” out for revenge & justice. I loved her special skills! I can’t wait to read the next books. The character development has been amazing so far.
Second paragraph in, and I go straight to reviewing. Could have, might have, possibly interesting, perhaps even intriguing at best, but not with that kind of language and used expletively
Excellent cross of sci to with drama and of course a little romance thrown in. What would you do if you could travel via shadows or water. Well written and will draw you in and be hard to stop reading.
Don't mind gore? Enjoy being surprised, intrigued & on the edge of your seat? This series is for you. Great characters with a great flare for writing Joey brings it to you!
The first 3 books were very entertaining, but possibly too gory for some. Decent beginnings to character development that I suspect will continue to mature with additional books.
I love, love, love the characters in this book. Best series I've read in a while. It's creative, and full of action. I love strong female supernatural characters. Lou is the best.
