Luiz Eduardo de Oliveira (born on December 13, 1944 in Brazil),[1] more famous under his artist name LEO is a Brazilian comics creator.

After having graduated as an engineer in mechanics, Oliveira left Brazil because of the military dictatorship that was in power at the time. He went first to Chile, but the following year saw the Chilean coup of 1973. This led Oliveira to leave, moving to Argentina, from where he finally returned to Brazil in 1974.

He found work as an illustrator in the advertising industry of São Paulo, before once more leaving Brazil, in 1981, this time moving to France, hoping to illustrate comics. However as the Franco-Belgian comics industry was in recession at the time, he was forced to work in advertising once again, although he managed to get the occasional piece published in L'Écho des savanes and Pilote.
In 1986, with the assistance of Jean-Claude Forest, Oliveira began contributing to the youth dedicated magazines of Bayard Presse. He illustrated true stories for Okapi magazine. He then recounted Mahatma Gandhi's life in the album Gandhi, le pèlerin de la paix, for Astrapi.

In 1988, the comics writer Rodolphe asked him to provide the artwork for his stories. Their collaboration proved fruitful, producing 8 albums of material for their Trent series and 5 for their Kenya one.

In 1993, Oleveira finally achieved an old dream when Dargaud agreed to publish his first solo series: Aldébaran. In 2000, after 5 volumes of Aldébaran, he launched Bételgeuse, which was nominated for the Prize for a Series at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2004.

This is a spinoff series from the main narrative of Leo's great graphic novel sequence, Les Mondes d'Aldebaran. A group of teenagers are the only survivors of a starship colonisation mission landing on a strange planet; they must grapple with the native fauna, including several different intelligent species of carying degrees of friendliness. As usual the art is gorgeous, and the characters distinctly depicted. I was particularly grabbed by the storyline, which takes an interesting enough if cliched situation and then applies some extra twists.

A typical Leo comic, featuring a group of people on a new planet, with some conflicts between group members and some encounters with unknown lifeforms. On the one hand, the formula still works: I enjoyed the story enough to want to buy the next installment. On the other hand, I feel I should punish the author a little for doing the same thing over and over again. Also, the alien lifeforms aren't as, well, alien this time around. So, three stars for now.

Leo starts a new story arc with The Survivors. A group of teenagers crashlands on a strange planet that seems to be attracting castaways from all over the galaxy. The story focuses on characters and worldbuilding. Leo's characterisation has improved over the years and we quickly get to know the new group's individuals.

Following the 3 set's of The Worlds Of Aldebaran stories I put a lot of faith on this new series. Until now the set of characters are kind of strange but let's see where it ends. Graphically follows the previous ones...

Very promising start for this new serie from Léo. Drawings are, as usual, excellent.

A ship full of young colonists crash lands on an unknown planet after mysterious quantum anomalies destroy their colony ship. The unfamiliar location and lack of more experienced survivors lead to power struggles and divides in the group. I liked the art and enjoyed the story enough to keep reading, but the second volume is where things start getting really interesting.

This is the first album in Leo's series The Survivors: Quantum Anomalies, which is set in his Worlds of Aldebaran universe (introduced in Aldebaran 1: The Catastrophe ), but which deals with entirely new set of characters. A group of young humans on route to Aldebaran are awakened only to find out that they have passed through a quantum disruption and are now alone somewhere unknown. True to his form, Leo presents us with an interesting and diverse group of characters, and his treatment of the science fiction themes involved is, as in the Worlds of Aldebaran saga, well realised and highly enjoyable.

All in all, it is refreshing to see Leo expand this universe and also to see him move beyond the adventures of Kim Keller and the Mantriss group (as depicted thus far in the three available cycles of the Worlds of Aldebaran saga). I am very much looking forward to seeing how The Survivors develops.

It is not as good as the Aldebaran/Beltegeuse/Antares series (but how to top those?) but it is very much enjoyable if you like Leo's work and i cannot wait to read the next volumes! The drawings are still superb, the creatures are too human-like for my taste but the plants and flowers of this new planet are once again very unique and show the author's amazing creativity.

Ganz ok.

This graphic novel is useful to learn vernacular use of French in conversation since most of the narrative is through dialogues. The content is a standard sci-fi adventure story which contains certain characters that may develop into something substantial. Will continue as French learning tool.

I enjoy very much reading this serie, but I find the drawings too simplistic in many places. Leo has some fantastic ideas on how to invent a new world. It does not properly reflect in its drawings.
