"The Secret Identity of the Lord's Aide" by Abigail Agar
I just finished reading this ARC gift from the author, and I must say, I think it is her best so far. I truly couldn't put it down without its drawing me right back in to discover just how each character would grow/mature on their way towards hopefully reaching their true potential. A sweet clean historical romance with some enlightenment upon some of the less pleasant aspects of society in that time period. Yet, we should not forget that every society has its 'less than pleasant' aspects. This story is more than entertainment, at least in my HUO (humble unbiased opinion)! Grab your tissues and prepare to smile, too!! Happy Reading !

Lady Elizabeth Byrd loves writing. So when her fiance is killed and her father disappears because of scams they pulled on people, which caused Lady Elizabeth to loose everything leaving her homeless. But when her only friend Lady Irene finds out what happened, she not only gave her a place to stay but a job as well. Lady Elizabeth writes secretly under the pen name L. B. for her friend's newspaper. Lord Nathaniel Linfield decides to seek his father's seat in parliament when he can't escape his mother's matchmaking attempts. L. B. is very critical of Lord Linfield's political speeches. So he decides to hire L. B. to write his speeches. Can these two lonely people find true love? Can Lady Elizabeth keep others from finding out about her secret identity? Read the book to find out. I loved the characters of Lady Elizabeth, Lady Irene, and Lord Linfield. I got aggravated with Lord Linfield's mother when she kept playing matchmaker and trying to run his life for him. The book is well written.

This is a delightful tale of a bumbling politician and a lady unjustly scorned. It's amazing how Elizabeth rebuilt her life after the scandal that rocked her world. It tells me how much Lord Linfield has recluses himself from the world. He knows that for Lady Elizabeth to be working in a newspaper; it must have been bad. The lessons that Lady Elizabeth gives him while writing his speeches gives him the confidence he needs to become a political figure like his father. England is in need of political change, but can he change to portray that not only to his constituents but to the woman who has captured his heart?

Another well written romance by Abigail Agar

This is another winner for this author. The main characters in the story, Lord Nathaniel and "Bess", are both endearing characters with different futures facing each of them. Bess needs to survive the horrible gossip that has become her mantle to carry because of the "ton's" ability to look down on her through no fault of her own. Nathaniel is facing a future in parliament since his father's murder and taking over as the heir to his father's legacy. How will this couple come together and will they be able to pursue a deeper relationship as they are ultimately drawn together? A very good story and very good characters. A clean, sweet romance with my favorite - an extended epilogue! Definite 5 star! Vicki from Wyoming

Enjoyed

Can't believe how much I truly liked this book. Yes, it is a story of love, but it's also a story of growth and kindness. It delves into the history of crime and punishment, metted out to those of lower society against those peers of the realm. I loved it.

Love & politics

Her past forced her out of the ton’s good graces. To provide for herself she became a writer. He was following in his father’s footsteps, running for his seat in Parliment. He could not find the correct words for his speeches and was tormented for this in the papers. He then decides to hire the writer who criticizes him the most. During this time they come to realize they have mutual feelings for one another and are blessed to build their future together.

ONE DELIGHTFUL READ!!!
OMG! Talk about going against the grain. I fell in love with this little jewel. I was riveted to every word from start to finish. Abigail really nailed all the emotions and in this bad boy 100% on point. You feel everything the characters feel. All the drama, heartache, uncertainty, danger and suspense build as tension spiral. I was awed as I witnessed all the trials and tribulations the main characters indured as they found their way. Familia betrayal and strain, distant and detached. The two main characters chemistry is intense and palpable. They're drawn to each other with such strength neither foresaw coming. Through all the trials and tribulations, secrets and plans things come to a spectacular climax that carries this bad boy roaring to life brilliantly. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this little gem together flawlessly. Remarkable job Abigail, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

(deep sigh) What didn't I like about the book? There is nothing better than reading a well written book. I loved every part of it. There are no negative parts. I loved Lady Elizabeth/Bess Byrd's character. She is like a phoenix, rising from the ashes to begin anew. Everyone in society turned their backs on her. Her father, Lord Thomas Byrd, eighth Baron Conway, and her ex-fiance Conner Garvey duplicitous and illegal actions, she felt shamed and disgraced. So, she withdrew from society. With the help of her dear friend, Irene Follett, she was able to pick up the pieces of her life and find a new purpose. Bess is brave to start over and brave to endure the degrading, disparaging remarks people would say behind her back and to her face. She is resilient and remarkable. Intelligent and kind. She gives back to the community her time and love by way of a children's food kitchen and homeless shelter. She meets Lord Nathaniel Linfield, the 7th Earl of Dartmouth, in an unusual way. They begin to work together and the attraction between them grows. Nathaniel does not know the whole sordid details of Bess's background, but wants to get to know her. Nathaniel grew up at the knee of his wonderful father. His father was a great orator and had a profound influence in Parliament. But Nathaniel did not have the hutzpah for public speaking. But he is his father's son and he is intelligent and considerate. He had the heart of a politician, he just needed guidance and help putting himself and his thoughts together. Then he met Bess and everything changed their lives. A wonderful book full of emotion, drama, forgiveness and humility. I loved it and I highly recommend it.

Kind of all over the place

The publisher bills this as a regency romance, but it seems like the author may have trying for a more twentieth century setting, with female secretaries/editors (and Technicolor! Really!)
I've been puzzling over this passage, and acted it out multiple times, but I cannot figure this out: "She gripped the kettle with a towel and tapped it atop the counter, swishing her palms together." She's gripping the kettle, which uses one palm. How might one swish them together, and why would one wish to?
The author has a unique writing style, with caricatured actors, a fast pace, and heightened emotion. Words are used in unusual ways, and I can't figure out if it's delightfully creative or fantastically cringy. Some of my "favorites":
-Her hands were anxious spiders (definitely the best phrase in the book)
-a wild helping of whipped cream
-often her efforts flickered over
-grey light spewing in from the windows.
-women chattering with wild, flashing hands;
-thick eyebrows had taken up residency just above his eyes
-his face looking like a soggy piece of wrapping.
-He whirled it from his broad shoulders,
-stitching her eyebrows over her eyes. (It just sounds so painful.)

Kinda like a hate-to-love romance. Except for the fact that they don't really hate each other but I would argue that there are quite some negative feelings involved towards the beginning.

The MCs are interesting.
The heroine is very involved with orphans and a headstrong and self-confident woman who has been given the opportunity to publish her own political opinion pieces in a newspaper owned by her female BF. Seems to be way too forward for that time. Women linked to politics? No go, unfortunately. So much to historical accuracy. But loved the feminist vibes.
However, our heroine is also plagued by her past, haunted by what her father and her fiance did. Don't really get why her identity is seen as sth. That is secret - people always recognize her (except for the hero for a while) so what's the point?

The hero was a bit too ... aggressive at times? Acting rashly, full of anger, not thinking properly.
Wasn't that fond of him.

The writing style was a bit chunky at times. I kinda missed some more links between paragraphs and chapters.

Lady Elizabeth Byrd's is working at a newspaper called The Rising Sun as a secretary the publisher Irene Follett. She begins to ghostwrite political analysis and one of the gentlemen she writes about his Lord Nathaniel Linfield, his father was a Member of Parliament and had been one of their brilliant members. He had been killed several years before this time. Elizabeth used LB as her pseudonym in writing the political assays and she had really bad things to say about Nathaniel and his speechmaking. Nathaniel knew his speechmaking horrible but he didn't know what to do about it, he couldn't find out who LB was so he sent a letter The Rising Sun asking LB to have dinner with him. So Elizabeth's and Irene showed up at his house for dinner. Nathaniel thought LB was making a joke on him but he discovered that LB was Lady Elizabeth Byrd and he hired her to help write his speeches. To find out what other actions occur you need to read the book and the extended epilogue. It's a good book...

From secret identity to published as true identity

Lord Nathaniel Linfield is fed up with his mother trying to set him up with debutantes and tells her that he's going to follow in his father's footsteps 👣 and run 🏃for Parliament. Things don't start off so well for him as he's spent so much time during the years alone and away from society that he has trouble speaking to the public and getting his ideas across to them.
Lady Elizabeth Byrd works for her friend at the newspaper as a Secretary and is secretly sent to cover the Public speeches of the contenders for Parliament and is published with the byline of L.B. to protect her identity.
Lord Linfield is irritated by the reviews about his speeches and after meeting L.B. and her boss at his home, he hires her to write his speeches and then also hires her to teach him how to project himself with confidence like debutantes all must learn before being launched at their first ball.

This historical romance story set in Regency-era England is about Lady Elizabeth Byrd is a clever woman who, after being dishonored by a scandal goes into seclusion and begins ghostwriting political analyses. Her life takes a surprising turn of events when Lord Nathaniel Linfield, a struggling politician seeks her help to improve his speech writing. As they collaborate together their professional relationship grows deeper. However, their partnership is complicated by social norms, self-doubt, and the secrets they both carry. Elizabeth's journey is not just about finding love but also about claiming her place in the world that sought to oust her. Her story is one of transformation, redemption, and the courage to forge her own path. I really enjoyed this wonderful historical regency romance novel.

Lord Nathaniel suffered the murder of his father the previous year. He has decided to move in and try to be a member of the parliament like his dad. He wasn't good at public speaking so he hires a ghost writer for his political speeches. Lady Elizabeth Byrd loves writing. Her fiance is killed and her father has dropped out of sight. Now she is homeless, her friend Lady Irene to the rescue gives her a job and a place to sray. The Lord is so surprised when 2 women show up to be his ghost writer. The chemistry between the two is intense and believable. There are many twists and turns. I received an ARC for an honest review. I reccomend this bood

A love that crosses boundaries.

This is an excellent way to portray the difference between classes during the Regency era, and sad to say, it continues today in rich versus poor. Lady Elizabeth wrongly suffered through this fate and was doing wonderful things to make a difference. Then Lord Nathaniel needed her help to be in Parliament so he could make a difference in England's laws. Both had to except and change and rise like a Phoenix, in order to be who they are and love one another. Great book. Couldn't put it down.

This is a well-written, emotional love story with a Lord who decides to run for his father's seat in Parliament. There is just one problem-his speeches are terrible and he freezes up while giving them. Lady Bess writes for her friend's newspaper, having lost her place in society due to the sins of her father and fiancee. She starts helping with the speeches and both fall in love in the process. I couldn't put it down until I had finished reading it.

She had everything, until her father and fiance strove to embezzle money from men of society.
Then she lost everything, except the one friend that stood by her, and gave shelter and employment.
He was a lad that enjoy the solitude of the woods, to that of society. However, having a choice of following in his father's formidable footsteps, or running the gauntlet of the Season, he choose the run for parliament.
How the two get together and why, well, that's the magic of this story.
