Midwinter #1

Snowed In: Kit and Harry

Rate this book
Someone -- or something -- is causing magical blizzards at Fairleigh Hall. The estate is suffering, and the Earl has requested assistance.

Constable Kit Thompson, of Bow Street’s Preternatural Division, isn’t especially thrilled to be sent out to the country. At least the assignment gets him away from fashionable London society and his own unwanted celebrity after successfully solving a notorious case. Of course, he’s now trapped at a country estate due to closed roads, snowstorms, and magic, but Kit’s always liked solving puzzles. He’s good at using empathic skills for investigations, and this is definitely a challenge. Besides, the Earl’s younger brother is an irritating and delicious temptation, all blue eyes and muscles and boundless enthusiastic optimism. Kit wants to either shake sense into him or kiss him senseless -- and can’t trust him, either, because if someone’s genuinely sabotaging the weather, everyone’s a suspect.

Harry Arden, younger brother of the Earl of Fairleigh, has never met a Preternatural Division constable before, much less a famous and celebrated one. He wants to help. And he wants to make that attractive but cynical constable smile, at least once. But the estate hides a family secret, and Harry knows perfectly well Kit doesn’t trust him ... and for good reason. Still, Harry offers to do what he can to assist with the investigation, and if that means spending more time with Kit, that’s a bonus.

When Harry and Kit end up caught by those magical storms, snowed in together at the old hunting lodge, they’ll have to trust each other with their secrets ... and their hearts.

Love it more each time it seems.
This series is the perfect comfort read for me. The perfect escape from reality (politics and too cold weather).

It's been a while since I read this novella and surprisingly I loved it much more this time around.
It features KL Noone's special brand of insta, but I'm used to it by now and know that despite it the story isn't rushed, at all. Kit and Harry don't even kiss until around 70% so although it's insta it's also kinda slow burn (if you kinda slightly squeeze your eyes).
I loved Kit, the accomplished constable with the preternatural division, and Harry, the main suspect but oh so lovely and caring brother to an earl who needs Kit's help.

KL Noone's books just put a smile on my face, I can't go wrong with them. Even at times when no other book feels right, and watching the news and checking social media makes me sick.

I've already read (and loved) some time ago the 4.book in this series (Midwinter series), so I can't wait to properly read the series in order now.

Sweet fantasy historical romance.

The author's A Flowering Of Ink is on another level of awesomeness for me, although the storylines aren't comparable at all.

The inst-lust on Kit's side dampened my enjoyment a bit. And the magical context was a bit confusing for me, maybe because I don't read fantasy often.
Enjoyable overall, espescially for readers who like historical mm with fantasy elements.

A historical fantasy story set in Yorkshire. Hmmm, so perfect.
I probably would have read it sooner, but the cover always made me think it was a contemporary story.
This is a four-part series. The first part can theoretically be read on its own, but I think it's nicer to read the second part as well, which provides a good epilogue to the story of Kit and Harry.
Here, there is an icy mystery to be solved. And Constable Kit Thompson gets help from Harry, Viscount Sommersby.
Secrets are revealed, there is a cabin in the snow, and there is a spark between these two.
It takes quite a long time to get anywhere, but the reward is outstanding, as always.
And I really liked the historical setting.

The young man had freckles. This was unfair. 🤭

“If you’re promising chocolate I suppose I’ll come in,” and watched the young man beam as if this answer were the key to every happy ending. 😍

Kit resolutely did not picture Harry dressed in only polished leather boots, arms bound. Wrists stretched up above tousled hair, perhaps. Lips parted and beckoning. Freckles extending everyplace. 😳

What a strange, unsatisfying story.

The author's writing style is very "high-brow" and tries too hard to be poetic. I've never seen so many metaphors and similes in one place!

Kit the Constable is the sole POV, and he's not remotely likeable. He's supposed to be a famous empath but doesn't realize Harry's intentions until they practically smack him in the face.

The story is set in Regency England, with magical elements, and takes place over the course of some 48 hours.

The ending is abrupt, certainly not a HEA, not even a HFN.

I will not be reading anything else by K.L. Noone.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Snowed In: Kit and Harry is a sweet and utterly charming novella with a paranormal twist. Kit is sensible and determined and terribly cynical. He’s pulled himself up from nothing to a position of prominence with the Bow Street Runners, Preternatural Division. He’s learned to deal with the upper crust while knowing he can never be one of them. So he’s a bit surly and irascible and it’s easy to understand the reason he carries such a big chip on his shoulder. But the author describes Harry as sunshine: joyful and honest and open, and it’s a really beautiful aspect of his personality. He’s an obvious suspect and we can feel Kit’s desperation as he tries to keep things professional between them. Their relationship is natural and smooth and they feel right together almost from the beginning.

This is very classic Noone -- I love her particular combination of hot and sweet, BDSM with All The Feels. She's so good at building emotion alongside the physical attraction with her couples, and she has a real flair for description, as well. The our-world-but-with-magic 'verse she's building in her recent stories is splendid. And this story is Regency England, to boot, which is a major weakness of mine! I regret that the cover art is really quite inaccurate, both in time period and in appearance of the heroes, but oh well, the lower half of it is lovely and captures the feel of the story very well. Anyway, even a much worse cover couldn't have kept me from enjoying this story!

Rich descriptions and gorgeous imagery are just the beginning!

Rating: 5🌈

It’s rare that short stories earn high ratings from me but Noone’s rich descriptive passages and gorgeous imagery won me over from the start.

There’s an immediate impression when Constable Kit Thompson meets Harry, younger son of Fairleigh Hall , of hair of “wayward sunshine “ , combined with boundless enthusiasm that the author perfectly projects a image of Harry that’s indelible and warm almost to the touch. Even as the brutal cold of winter encapsulates them.

That’s why Kit is there. To investigate why winter, the cold has fallen out of season on Fairleigh Hall. He’s a constable in Bow Street’s Preternatural Division where he can use his magical gifts to solve crimes and apprehend criminals.

The time and setting is Fairleigh Hall, Yorkshire, 1802. Regency. Same sex relationships and marriages are now acceptable for the younger non inheriting sons and daughters.

There’s an astonishing mystery and equally compelling resolution. The relationship between Kit and Harry is unexpectedly strong, complex, and kinky. Rope play, D/s, all so well done and beautifully written.

These are nuanced characters which is hard to do in short stories but the author achieves it. Kit has a complicated history. Son of a courtesan and bastard of a nobleman, he skirts the edges of society. Harry, the younger brother has the most complex background but it’s one that’s slowly revealed throughout the story.

While winter swirls around the hall, there’s still a tiny but very strong support cast to deepen the sense of family and friendship within relationships that are developing. That’s Ned Arden, the Earl of Fairleigh, Harry’s older brother and Lizzie, his betrothed. And Grayson, the butler. All so beautifully portrayed and realistic that you feel like you have met them.

The storylines move briskly along, but with a poetic tone to the imagery and a sense of otherness when it comes to the characters themselves and their magic.

I was so in love with everyone here. So sorry to be finished with the story.

But what a delight to read and reread. A new favorite of mine. And hopefully yours. I’m highly recommending this!

And I just found out that it has a sequel. Onto that next.

- [x] Snowed In: Kit and Harry (part of The Demon Universe of 9 books)
- [ ] Midwinter Firelight (it’s sequel)

first of all, what an AWFUL COVER FOR THIS BOOK. 1) it gives the impression that this is a contemporary romance. it is not??? it’s a fantasy regency romance ffs. 2) the characters don’t even look like that. one is canonically blonde ffs!!! i’m going to make my own cover or smth for my book presentation…
also the title is a little boring for the story but at least it’s semi accurate goddamn.
anyways!!!! this book hit the spot on a cold and windy night like tonight! takes place over a short span of time but i feel like their feelings were justifiable or at least prettily written about. the writing was actually so great, just beautiful prose (which made me realize my current audiobook is completely lacking prose) and imagery, smth one could take notes on. the story was pretty simple but well executed, magic constable comes to earl’s fancy house that’s being blizzarded in spring to fix problem. at first suspects younger brother of earl, but also is v attracted to him, sparks fly etc. sex stuff was quite good, characters were very sweet and good dynamic (currently obsessed with the dynamic of character A who takes care of everyone and character B who takes care of character A!). simple conclusion to the problem but satisfying in the way it was written (also dragon!!!). i really really liked the magic of the world, both characters have cool and uniquely portrayed magical abilities. effortlessly magical regency world that felt unique and beautiful. perfect amount of plot and development for a novella. just a shame the cover is so misleading!!!
also i’m the 100th person to shelve this book as read on goodreads!

A sweet story mixing magic with societal standings and expectations in a great way. With one character who came from a low society level and worked his way up based on his magic, mixing with another born to a high society level but kept away from his level by his magic. There is plenty of potential for them to either clash or simply not try to work together due to their standings, and that certainly is an issue that comes up. But romantic elements aside they work together very well to solve the issue going on, which time and again brings them together in a way that makes their chemistry hard to deny. It was an easy read with a good couple and an elegant solution that didn't rely on brute force.

This is an AU historical set in a world (possibly the same world as A Demon for Midwinter?) where magic and supernatural creatures are known. A grumpy paranormal crimes investigator meets a sunshine nobleman who for reasons which everyone is loathe to disclose never leaves his family estate. Ever. Now the estate suffers perpetual winter, and it is up to Kit and Harry to figure out why. While getting snowed in and having kinky sex, obvs.

Cute characters and an interesting storyline with Kit the empath and Harry the healer working together to . Kit's insta-lust was off-putting, particularly seeing we were in his head the whole time and I was a bit like "enough already, think about something else". And seriously, what's with the cover? Two guys in white t-shirts sitting in front of a modern window, does not say regency in any language.

genuinely had no idea this was historical until i started reading? like they are wearing t shirts on the cover? whatever, i love historicals.

i think this would have benefited from being spread out over a week or two, at least. as is, the story happens over only a couple of days and i think the characters needed more time to sit with each other. also, kit is kind of annoying and i would have liked more of him so i could grow to love him through it. extremely adorable novella though!

K.L. Noone's worlds are somewhat sentient so as to create pretty and amusing moods in surroundings. Fantasy's ideal for this, and while this story is a mystery, it's also a love story with light and kind kink and a figuring out together how to make things work, and if you want to know if you'll enjoy this author's style, this story's a good place to start.

I loved this look into the past of the demon universe, and I will definitely be rereading this, and most likely A Demon For Midwinter very soon. Maybe once I finish typing this. I loved what was here, but I could have easily read more about everything.

Delightful. Loved the magic of this world, Kit & Harry, the exploration of family/estate dynamics, the solution they worked out. And dazzling emotional descriptions.

Most of it was cute and interesting, but I don't like the vibe of "I just met you, but I know exactly what you need, which happens to be exactly what I like." It makes sense that's a common romance trope but I really don't like how it feels already and the frequency makes it worse.

Just not for me then!
