Super Soldier Spy, Book 2
He can't get her out of his head...literally.
In Helen "Hell" Roston's elite black ops world, failure isn't listed as an option in the rule book. As the leading guinea pig in a dangerous combination of virtual reality training and a mind-altering serum, though, every day offers a thousand ways to blow it. And the very real sexual chemistry that sizzles between Hell and her trainer is messing with her head even more.
COS Commando Jed McNeil is an expert in mind manipulation games. He's been chosen to be Hell's monitor and anchor in the Super Soldier Spy program. Trained to compartmentalize his needs and feelings in an assignment, he's unprepared by how much Hell affects him.
When the experimental serum gives Helen incapacitating headaches, her pain throws Jed into protect-at-all-costs mode. A position the fiercely independent Hell would rather die than be in. But with a rogue CIA faction out to sabotage the program, Hell has no choice--even if it makes her head explode. It's trust Jed, or die.
Book 1 of this series was published by the Mira imprint of Harlequin. WARNING: Contains scenes of voyeuristic hanky panky, bad guys that feed off mind-blowing sexual energy, a heroine who knows how to get her kick-ass on, and a hero who gives as good as he gets.
Jenn, as everyone calls her, likes to keep things simple. That's why she runs a roofing construction business, teaches, writes and does her own business taxes eight days a week. She considers herself a multi-cultural and well-rounded person. Workers leave her alone when she starts yelling at them in Chinese and Malay. She also studies German and Russian because she can't pronounce French very well. The most boring and interesting thing she ever did was translating documents from various languages into English, giving her an opportunity to see many countries. Having traveled extensively in her twenties, she now spends her thirties quietly with six noisy dogs. Shameless Promotion: Jenn was a RWA contest slut, having finaled in and won a bunch of them including the Marlene, the Merritt, and Indiana's Golden Opportunity. She is also a three-time finalist in the RWA Golden Heart contest before she became published. She would love to hear your comments about her books. She has been known to give away bookmarks and stuff to those who praise her.
AND, if your roof leaks, she can probably give you some advice!
Here are some wonderful writing friends of mine. I love their books! Please visit their sites and give them a try. Be careful. They are HOT WRITERS. Very addictive! Thanks--Jenn
"It's a private emergency?" His low raspy voice made the question sound even more intimate. "Is this private enough?" He wasn't standing too close but something about him made Helen feel as if every male inch of him was pressed against her. She almost leaned closer, to see whether she was imagining the heat emanating from his body, but resisted the temptation just in time.
"Lucky she didn't break your nose. Puffy eyes, man. It's a major pain to sight a target from an angle." "He could always stand sideways and look out of his good eye." Helen felt a flash of guilt until she remembered why she'd hit him.
Helen is Hell-on-wheels and kicks some serious ass! Poor Jed. *snicker*
"One more minute," his voice was silky smooth, his breath teasing her ears. "Didn't you say five minutes wouldn't be enough?" "No…" she protested, knowing instinctively what he was going to do. She pulled at his shirt fiercely. "Damn you…I know you're him. Just…tell me." "I thought I've been showing you," he mocked. "Thirty seconds. I don't think your'e going to make it. Uh, uh, uh, no words…you're going to waste these last twenty seconds."
(…)"And one. I guess I'll just have to show you more later."
WARNING First things first. Readers who're considering giving this series a try should be aware of the following:
1) The first book Virtually His is not a romance. There's a lot of techy stuff going on in the first installment, probably somewhat similar to sci-fi. I believe Gennita's books are labeled as tech spy-fi not without good reason. Helen Roston (Elena, Hell) and Jed McNeil (Hades during RV mode) hardly interact with each other face-to-face in Virtually His. That's where all begins, the experiment of synchronizing brainwaves for deep immersive virtual reality. The goal was to train the GEM operative Helen "Hell" Roston as a remote viewer, an agent trained to spy remote targets with the mind. Thus, Jed is Helen's monitor and trainer and they are connected through virtual reality. Meaning, even the smexy bits happen when Helen is remote viewing (RV) in the first installment. Fact is, Helen doesn't know the identity of her trainer until at the very end of book #1. But once she's aware of his identity, the fun truly begins in all its shiny glory in book #2 Virtually Hers.
2) Virtually Hers ends with a I-want-to-bite-my-nails-off-it's-so-damn-good cliffhanger. Wait, what did I just say? I mean I wanted to scream my head off because the author left me hanging like that!! F@ck. Yep, it's the kind of cliffhanger that makes you damn antsy to read the sequel stat. The third installment is not out yet and it's been years already. Unfortunately I have no idea when Gennita Low is going to publish Virtually One. Gimme, gimme NOW! *grabby hands*
While Virtually His was all about the creation and training of the supersolider-spy, the sequel is more about the take-off of Jed and Helen's relationship. They face each other in the real world and, trust me, the sparks are flying.
Jed is Number Nine in the Covert Subversive (COS) commando unit. The one who has to finish each mission; that means he's familiar with death because that's the way a mission ends. Number Nine has the capability to take care of all operations effectively. He's also an excellent leader and an expert at seduction of mind and body and a master manipulator when it comes to playing mind games. Jed McNeil is Helen's monitor in the Super Soldier Spy program. He's trained to hold all his feelings, emotions, and thoughts close to the vest, yet he's more than a bit startled at how much Helen affects him. Thus, Jed is very reluctant to talk about his background and past, which is very interesting by the way, but he loves fiercely and protects those who are close to his heart. Some of his traits and skills are remarkable and have been mentioned in Virtually Hers, but I won't go into details here because it's more fun to discover them yourself.
Helen is a GEM operative, trained in NOPAIN (non-persuasive and innovative interrogation, a special GEM technique in information-gathering). The bold and sassy Elena is a fantastic heroine who kicks some serious ass and I loved her quirky and funny side. She's a smartass, for sure, unapologetically candid with a great sense of humor. The aloof and stone-faced Jed who's as solid as a rock and used to suppress his emotions did care very much about Helen. She means the world to him and he was in full-on protector mode in Virtually Hers--more than ever. His mesmerizing voice and seductive hands did me in (well, among other interesting assets of course). Love me some Jed! He's such a complex, intriguing, and mysterious man and there are a couple layers of him that I have yet to discover. I blame Gennita because she left me groping in the dark for a long time. You're a tease. But I get it, you need to keep your readers on their toes. I really, really want to see them developing their relationship in Virtually One, going deeper still. Jed is a very well-educated man and I'd like to see more of his introverted personality and I want him to share some downtime with Elena, which leads me to my next thought:
Frankly, I don't believe that Helen Aw, poor Jed. I read the teaser of Virtually One
All things considered I'd say that even though readers might not enjoy the first book very much, the sequel Virtually Hers makes up for everything. Lots of great interaction between Jed and Helen, peppered with innuendos. Plus, the sexual tension as well as the smexy bits are so darn good! Add in some good action to the other appealing ingredients and I simply devoured that tasty and sexy read.
I just randomly came across Gennita Low's Virtually His, which is the first book in the series, and loved it. This book I liked even more. It was fast paced and kept me on my toes. We finally get to see who her trainer is and I have to say I had my guess in the last book and was happy to see I was right. Jed and Helen have chemistry that jumps off the page and their kinky romps in the V.R. room and their shared dreams are amazing. Each encounter is different and I loved watching Jed struggle with his feelings for Helen. Jed is such a unique character, cold and detatched and to see how Helen affects him gave him a vulnerable quality. I will have to say that my brain had to work very hard reading this book, there is a lot of information to take in and a lot of terms that just flew right over my head. I had to go back in a few places and re-read a paragraph just to make sure I was understanding everything correctly. It's a different take on a romantic suspense, and I was so invested in these two characters and their outcome. Left me with a huge cliffhanger at the end and I am dying for Virtually one to come out and am hoping it's soon! I have never read a book with these kinds of twists and I hope more people will check these books out and hope they will love it as much as I do
The first chapter is a quick recap from all that happen in Book 1 Virtually His right until Helen gasps at her computer and found out who is her mysterious handler. Okay, is Jed McNeil. I never would have guess is him, because he appeared quite late in book 1. No, he was there from the beginning, but often referred as 'the man'.
Now Helen finally found out who is this guy who kept seducing her in the virtual reality and she wanted to confront him and make him admit it on her face. Is interesting to see how things panned out for them because he is been keeping the secret for so long.
The plot about Agent 51 is again beyond confusing from Book 1 and I already gave up reading about it. I speed through it and just read what happen between Helen and Jed. There isn't any declaration of love obviously. They are just two people being attracted to each other. The story ended in the cliffhanger, but since I'm not that invested in the story, is okay that the next book is still haven't out after so many years.
First of all, a big fat THANK YOU to Samhain Publishing for picking up Gennita Low's contract on these books. You're not going to regret it, because she rocks!
I thoroughly enjoyed this second foray into the secret world of remote viewing. The plot was well-drawn...The commandos of COMCEN are great fun, and it was terrific to see them all again. But the centerpiece, of course, was the growing relationship between Hell and Hades.
Sci-fi? Paranormal? Special-Ops? I don't know for sure how to classify this book except to say it was darn good and well worth the 2 year wait (it doesn't actually get released in paperback til August 2010, but I read the Kindle version).
I read the first book in the series years ago and loved it. I desperately waited for the second book but by the time it came out I was only mildly interested in th story. I'm thoroughly annoyed that the book ends on a cliffhanger and there is no information about when the third book will be written.
I really love this romance novel, it's my new favorite romance novel. I don't normally like to read series, but this one was aight.
However, my biggest disappointment was when Hell didn't do anything to protect herself against the intruder in her room. I hope she comes out of her coma that she is in.
Jed is one of the sexiest characters I've read about in a long time. We meet Jed throughout many Low's books as this cold, calculated agent and I love that for his own book she was able to keep him in character, allowing his feeling for the heroine to progress naturally. SHe didn't do like many other romance authors and have him fall in love with the heroine on first sight while she remains aloof.
Excellent book. Well worth the 3 year wait for it to finally come out after book one, Virtually His. All I can say is given the way this one left readers hanging at the end even worse than Virtually His did, there better not be another 3 year wait for book 3, Virtually One!!!!!!
Love the way the relationship is slowly developing between Jed and Hell. Keeps readers guessing and wondering and reading to find out when/if they get into a romance and get an HEA.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I waited forever for this book to finally come out after Virtually his. It was worth the wait. I loved it. I love the remote viewing. It's pretty cool. The suspense part of it is pretty awesome too. Then the cliffhanger ending. WTH? When does the next book come out? I'm guessing never.
A lot more of Jed... How can I not love this book??? You left us in a major cliffhanger and two years and counting waiting for the third one... Please take us out of our misery.. I loved the second book even more than the first one.. I recommend it to anyone..
Off the top...not having book 3 to go to next! Wow get thru the first and watch out, it pulls in and won't let go. Hopefully the next book will be out soon. And this is the second set in the series. Go from the first and the last book of this series may be out.
I liked the charecters, but the story line was kinda slow and boring. I would have liked to see Helen (Elena) in more action and for someone that was suppose to be a alpha type personality she gave in way to easily to being manipulated by her man.
Aargh! I hate it when an author ends on a cliffhanger and then we have to wait forever for the next book! Virtually One is the next part of the story, and it's still not out! Very frustrating.
Wonderful story can't wait for the next one, been waiting for like over 2 years already. The only sucky thing about this book is that it takes the author forever to complete the series.
