Mya Burch and her five-year-old son Colin, Jr. left home for a job and the start of a new life across the country in a place called Versteck Valley. It was time for her to jumpstart her career and enroll her son in a school for gifted kids. On the surface, Versteck looked like a perfect place to live in peace and raise her son. But Versteck had secrets that Mya couldn’t imagine and the residents refused to share.
Asher Pendergrass had built his security company on grit and determination. He and his cousins had invested millions to make their teen-aged dream a reality. Versteck Arms was a place that accepted the best talent from around the world and they’d defend their piece of heaven against all outsiders.
Asher isn’t too keen on Mya living next door and even less so when an unknown threat arrives in town harassing the single mother and her son. Strangers weren’t welcome in Versteck, those who started trouble even less so. With a threat against Mya and her son rising each day, Asher and the men of Versteck have to make a decision to either band together to help the newcomer or step aside.
"Hello,I'm a self-proclaimed read-a-holic. I love most genres and would rather read than do most things. Stands to reason, that I'd have this inexplicable love affair with the written word!
Reading was the balm that soothed me during tough times as a single mother, working two jobs. As things leveled out, I found I enjoyed the places books took me, there was a certain solace learning about various times and cultures. When I began traveling, many of the places I visited felt like old friends. I could envision the characters from the books walking the cobbled streets, or running along the swift moving streams.
After twenty years of reading and collecting my favorite authors, I decided to indulge my passion for storytelling. I took classes, invested in seminars and sat nervously across the table from editors. It was a lengthy process, Finally, I got the courage to allow the market to judge my work. The market can be a brutal, but I think fair, mistress. Hard work is rewarded and appreciated. Slackers don't stand a chance. :-)."
Finally, a book where grown ups acted like grown ups. People actually had conversations with each other and the heroine didn’t act like damsel in distress when danger arrived. Asher and Mya have great chemistry and the minor characters added to the story. I haven’t been this excited for a series in awhile. Can’t wait for the next installment.
Being a single mother, Mya Burch wanted a do over for her life when she got her college degree in Psychology and Sociology. Her incentive was her five year old son, Colin's need for a new school that worked with his advanced and gifted intelligence. That led her to take a new job in Versteck Valley, Colorado so her son could attend Higher Dimension Acaademy Pre-school. What she did not know was that the town had secrets, secrets and capabilities that she would need to keep her son protected.
Even though he did not like Mya and her son living next door to him, Asher Pendergrass insisted on finding out everything he could about her to make sure she was not a threat to his security company he and his cousins built from the ground up, including the Robber's Roost. He did not intend to get so caught up in Mya's erotic books she authored. He was thoroughly intrigued by her. Even the residents of Versteck Arms where Mya worked, loved her and saw her as a part of their community. They held together to protect she and Colin when his paternal grandfather Joshua Henry, started a ball rolling he could not stop.
Erosa wrote a story that was intriguing and full of drama, action and mystery. It tickled meto read how Asher got all riled up reading Mya's books. He was really turned on by them. Even though he only had encounters with women, he made tiem to have a relationship with Mya and her son. This was a first for him. He did not think women could tolerate looking at his scares and tattoos, but that did not affect how Mya saw him. She thought he was classically handsome regardless of the long scarr on his face. Being around him, Mya had feelings that she thought were long dead, especially after how her ex- husband Ahmed talked about her and ruined her reputation to the point to where her family had to move. She mostly concentrated on being a good mother for her son and did not have time to date. Asher was the first man since Colin Henry, Sr. that she was attracted to in a long time. Neither one of them came from "normal families" and both Mya and Asher were determined to make their relationship work through truth, honesty and love. I enjoyed reading this action packed story and can't wait to read about Asher's cousin Moses.
Loved this book. All the characters were interesting vice irritating. Asher is so intriguing along with his "Crew." I loved how his tough guy character was not so over the top, so that when he did fall for his love, it was believable. I'm interested in finding out more about Drake and Moses. And what's up with Colin Senior. Will he return and have some role in little Colin's life? Love this book and excited to read more in this series. Erosa you've done it again!
I really enjoyed the book, can't wait for the next book in the series. Maya, Asher, and Colin are already a family. I hope they make an appearance in the next book in the series. I hope little Colin isn't affected negatively by his father's involvement in the government research. I don't know if I like Colin Sr. Is he a victim of the government or a willing participant? Hopefully we'll find out in other books in the series. Can't wait for the next, hope it's coming soon.
I lost interest in this book and then read through it rather quickly. It didn't get to where I wanted it to. There was something off about the story, can't quite put my finger on it. A bit disappointed actually.
This is the first time I read a book by Erosa Knowles, and just off this one book she has gain a new fan very quickly.
Now about this book.
I love Asher, Mya, & Conlin jr... better yet I LOVE a lot more people from Versteck Valley. They really do protect those they consider their own. There nothing you can say or do they will make sure the people are protected. Family and Loyalty and shown throughout this book.
So the first time Asher meets Mya are not exactly a love at first site. It's more of a danger at first site, and Mya with her motherly instincts got the heck out of there.
A big misunderstanding, but mess up on Jack part, have to say that a big strike. I have to agree with Mya when she said that she just might not be able to trust him. How are you part of the law and sends her to something that dangerous. Not to mention what about her made you think that she should go in the direction you told her too. What about her said that she was the person that they were looking forward and send her toward Asher. She said that she had a kid in the car and that she was trying to avoid the storm. SMH.
Not only did you get a strike from Mya but also from Asher himself. How many more times can you make a mistake or mess up before your put on the bench. And lets just say not so many, when he begin to get eye ball and people want him to sit on the side lines. Come on Jack you got to get it together.
Now speaking of law firm there is another person who part of the law firm and his name is Brighton who is the sheriff for the next town over. He comes to help out with what going on and he goes and says the most dumbest things at time. There's a part when a lot of things are going down, bad things and instead of negotiation correctly, he very much like 'they ( bad guys ) will do what you want but first you ( Asher ) need to let them get safely get away.'
When I read this the first thing that came to mind is, "Are you stupid!?! They need to do what he wants first, and then they can leave safely. I hope he doesn't allow them to leave. He ( The Sheriff ) probably working with them! How is someone from the next town over handling this situation, and not Jack who is the Sheriff for Verdteck"
And I was not disappointed at all. Asher did what anyone sane would do in this delicate situation and told them that they will do what he says. Then Jack FINALLY putting on his sheriff badge and takes over the situation that was suppose to be run by him anyhow.
This made me doubt Brighton and made me think that he was also part of the bad guys group. Because lord knows there are a lot of curpt law enforcements out there. But also gave another strike against Jack in my book.
On another note I love how Asher is with Mya and Colin. He really is great for them, and they're great for him too. I do hope their family becomes bigger and hopefully we can see it throughout the series, in the other books. I would love to see how Colin would treat his younger siblings if he had any.
I also had a lot of questions while reading this book that I HOPE will be answers through the other books in this series. There are a lot of things that happen in this book and but I'm happy that there more than one person looking out for Mya and Colin.
I do have one question and that is what happen to Asher cousin Mose. He was suppose to have came home and he didn't. I know Asher has mention that in the book but that's about it, all that is said is that they cannot wait for him to come home. And that he is now safe, I hope he can come home soon. I hope there is a book about him as well as his brother Dave.
This was an interesting story and although you can feel there will be a part 2 or at least another book where these characters will return, it still ended in a nice tone-like of an HEA. Mya and Asher were so opposites but yet very compatible in so many other aspects. Asher was an alpha, boss man to the core and when he met Mya he became or rather fell at first glance. He is loyal, charming, nice and appeared leathal. Mya on the other hand was gullible, naive, nice, cute, and really try to live by the "nice outside but a freak in bed" type of code. After several mistakes, she finally pull all stop, moved and met Asher and she too fell at first glance. All is fine for the couple except for where they live, in Versteck, where it is not at all what one will expect of one place. Everything is superficial, until you get permission to come behind close door. Colin was so cute and the bomb, then Wesley was it... Laura wasn't bad her self, but Joshua deserved everything that happened to him. Wished Grégory got his fair as well. This was an excellent read minus the feeling that this is not over. I wouldn't consider this as a stand alone but it was a beautiful way to start this series.
You know I'm always up for a new series especially when you get the feeling this one is going to be more than meets the eye.I loved the chemistry between Asher and My a,its was one of those I know its there and we are going to set fire to it.The writer gives us two people who have been shaped by events in their lives and it has made them plain spoken about what they want and what they expect. That was refreshing it gives you a true look at how relationships happen. Now little Colin he was the diamond in this story. This child was so good in every scene that sometimes you forget it is a child speaking. The writer has opened a door in this series to wonder about the possibilities of what could happen.I would love more of a look at this couple on how they handle having a genius for a son and the possibility of more. But before that happens more is coming to Verteck Valley.Oh and the references to Butch Cassidy was great, big western fan. This was a good start to what will be a terrific series .
Had mystery, suspense, angst, hot chemistry and sexy scenes. I wished we got more on some of the plot twists that started, but didnt give as much clarity. I guess we see Asher and Mya moving like a normal couple would, taking it slow. But he taking over as the dad figure and they are vague as a couple still😖??? The pressure from the new friend group put on Mya about moving forward with Asher and pressuring the son to decide he wants Asher as a dad figure to an impressionable boy without a dad was creepy and off putting to me. It's weird in real life and here too. These kind of series can leave you wanting more, but I don't know if I do. It was ok, but felt like it was missing something. I'm not truly invested with this couple or the storyline🤷🏾♀️.
I loved this Old World meets New World theme in this tale full of one mystery after another, danger and intrigue. It was good reading the Old West Lore...legends & characters I've researched off and on for years. There is a glut of unanswered questions which can be frustrating. Virtually nothing is fully explained and with the length of this tale you have to wonder why. It's also nerve wracking how easily Verstecks defenses were penetrated and how under the radar the snakes in their midst were. Asher & Mya make for an unlikely pair and Colin is an adorable enigma. Looking forward to Book 2 but I hope it's not quite as mysterious as Book 1. We'll see....😉
An exciting page turner This was a great book with some surprising turns and twists in the story There is suspense, action, some badass men and one especially badass woman Laura Mya and Asher are great together and their love story as it unfolds is wonderful The town of Versteck Valley is not what it seems but turns out what Mya definitely needs Mya son Colin plays an important role in the book and brings more dynamics into the family that forms around Mya Great job Erosa and I can’t wait to read book 2 about Asher’s cousin Moses
Knowles is a wonderful writer a great imagination. I've read several of her books and she doesn't disappoint. She is visionary when she put images in your mind of characters that hold through the entire story. Praise to a great writer and story teller. Can't wait t read next book.
Great story, wonderful read. It's like eating your favorite candy. It's hard to let go when you've at end. This person knows her characters and she invites you along a joyful ride.😋
Never one for old west movies and stories, but this book made them seem more interesting. And also enjoyed the way the residents are about each other. Wish there was a place like this for real because I’ve thought of starting over many times. And then to get a good love story on top of all that! And so many other great stories to come from Ms. Knowles with the other characters in Versteck Valley.
To take the historical facts of the Robber’s Roost and turn it into a love story was genius. The story was beautifully written but I wish there would’ve been a little more depth given to Mya and Asher’s previous pain. Overall 4.5 stars and a great read. Can’t wait for the next book!
This was a wonderful read and great start to a new series. The amount of action and backstory about various characters leads me to feel extremely hopeful for future installments. Colin, Jr. is one of the most well developed child characters I’ve read in a story. I highly recommend this read.
Love all the occupants that lived in the Arms. Mya was a strong woman who would do anything to protect her child and found a willing soulmate in Asher who fought for those he love. The characters in the story made for a very interesting read especially Wesly and his band of criminal misfits. Cannot wait for the second book in the series
Asher (Men of Versteck Valley Book 1) was wonderful. This tale of this mysterious town with equally people is a truly outstanding. The characters and the storyline just pull me in from the 1st Chapter to the very last page. I still want more of these sexy and strong women and men of Versteck Valley. Check out this author and book. You'll love it! 😉
This was a new author read for me and I really enjoyed it. Asher and Mya are great and I loved how clear and honest they were with each other. This was filled with mystery, suspense and an ending which leaves the notion that there will be more stories concerning the people from Versteck. A great read!
I was hooked from the beginning. I loved this story about bad guys retiring safely. A page turner for sure. I fell in love with Cold Jr. He is adorable. Erosa writes stories that are very realistic and see inspiring. I own every book that she has published. A wise investment, every read is an adventure.
Asher was very much The Alpha male who showed Maya what it felt like to be protected and what length he and the man of the Arms which goes to protect their own. Asher also like experimenting with Maya’s erotic books. I cannot wait to read more about this series.
This story is interesting and different. It's filled with a lot of mystery, secrets, and high tech protection. Collin Jr is so smart and just melts your heart. His intelligently makes you forget his age, but his fear of thunderstorm reminds you of his age. Asher and Mya are good together and they went from 0 to 60 on relationship and love.
Always was a fan of Ms. Knowles. This book was outstanding. The characters were well thought out and developed. All with awesome personalities and not cookie cutter. I loved the interaction between everyone in this book. The storyline kept you turning the page. Way to go! Waiting to see what's next!
Asher and Mya for beach other very well. Totally enjoyed their " courtship? " Colin is a very grown kid, seems like 5 going on and 30. I also really like how everyone in town came to each other's aid. Looking forward to reading about the rest of the men of Versteck valley.
Nice reads, mystery, romance, action and maybe a little bit of science fiction. Great story line, had lots of room for expansion on so many levels. I forgot to mention the history component in this story. Probably the most important part of the story. Definitely a worthy read.
The reason I purchased this book was Collin jr. A super smart five year old. Secret tunnels and the old west. The romance between Mya and Asher was hot. I would like to know more about what happened to Collin sr
Asher and Myra didn't fight the chemistry had between each other. Can't wait for good 2 . Because of Colin father and his friend Griffith what's going on? This has me in edge. So I will be waiting
Finally an adult relationship. It was refreshing to have a couple that was upfront and honest about how they felt about each other. Besides that I really enjoyed the over all story, waiting for Book 2
Loved the intrigue and suspense. The love story was strait up. No miscommunication or drama around them falling in love. The mystery of the town and the mysterious happenings around her son's dad is a plus. Looking forward to book two.
A scared, tattooed alpha male is so sexy. That is Asher. The heroine just started a new job in Versteck Valley, but trouble has followed her. Why? Who? There are a few surprises, you will fall in love with the residents of Versteck Valley. I did.
