Der Krimi mit Spionage-Elementen überzeugt durch Spannung sowie historische Details bezüglich Personen, Orten, Art der Gesprächsführung und Rezepten. Wer neben einer verwickelten Intrige an dem Flair des 18. Jahrhunderts in Paris interessiert ist, kommt bei diesem Buch voll auf seine Kosten.

On a tué une jeune femme. Du nanan pour Nicolas Le Floch ? Nenni. Du nanan pour l'auteur, bien au contraire, puisque la malheureuse victime n'est autre que la maîtresse du brillant commissaire de police. Au XVIIIe siècle, dans ce cas-là, on éloignait le suspect plutôt que d'ébranler la confiance du public en la police : et voilà notre Nicolas envoyé en Angleterre comme agent secret, mais juste le temps que comprendre qu'un odieux complot se trame contre lui, et de revenir pour établir la vérité et se disculper lui-même. Il faut dire, et c'est dommage, qu'on lui laisse pour cela une liberté d'action qui laisse pantois et qui ne contribue guère à la tension romanesque (que l'on songe, au contraire, au brio déployé par Fred Vargas pour traiter une situation comparable dans "Sous les vents de Neptune"). L'intrigue, bien construite, est certainement plus satisfaisante pour qui connaît les premiers romans de la série, car elle fait appel à quelques retours feuilletonesques. Ceci posé, Jean-François Parot évoque l'époque qui sert de cadre à l'action avec toujours autant de bonheur, et traite notamment avec finesse de la mélancolie des fins de règne, et des bouleversements presque arbitraires qu'ils entraînent. C'est que ce diable d'homme m'aura presque fait trouver Louis XV sympathique : au-delà de la mécanique narrative, il y faut une plume.

Successful, lauded by those around him and trusted by the King, Nicolas le Floch is at the height of his powers. Commissioner of police in Paris, he has solved many crimes and made friends and enemies. However when Le Floch's mistress is found dead suspicion is placed on him as anonymous tips and witness statements seem to implicate him. Le Floch's powerful allies trust him and he is sent to London on a secret mission for the King. On his return he continues to investigate and realises that the plot hinges around different factions vying for power as the King sickens and dies.
This is the fourth novel in the series and the power of Parot's writing is not diminished. Here the plot weaves the personal and the political in a tight knot whilst developing characters even further. The intrigues around the death of a monarch are skilfully drawn and Parot's invention of time and place is superb.

Cette série est extrêmement bien documentée d’un point de vue historique, avec une foule de détails pittoresques, et la langue, soutenue, accroît sa crédibilité.
Peut-être est-ce parce que je n’ai pas lu l’ensemble de la série, mais la multiplication de personnages et d’événements de cet épisode m’a un peu perdue. Je l’ai lu avec plaisir plutôt pour son aspect historique que pour l’intrigue policière elle-même, d’ailleurs moyennement convaincante d’un point de vue politique alors qu’elle se veut l’illustration de complots fomentés par des factions rivales qui anticipent la disparition du monarque à la fin du règne de Louis XV

This tapestry of Pre-Revolutionary France is told against a mystery illuminating the thinking. motivations ,values and assumptions of an Inspector La Floch keenly attuned to the world of bourgeois and nobility controlling France. Parot tells a fine story with plenty of villains and not a few heroes.This story and the ones preceeding it are more than just fun for they foreshadow the insensitivity of the upper classes to the misery of french working class and peasant life which will culminate in the guillotine.Drama,history,philosophy and sociology are all present in this saga of a Police Inspector trying to be ethical in a class bound world.Well worth reading and very authentic.

2.5 would be more accurate. I enjoyed the first two books in this series but the subsequent two have disappointed. The history in this book is enjoyable, the crime/mystery plot rather convoluted and weak, and the continuing recipe explanations of various dishes is now annoying.
I already have the next in the series but reading it is not an enticing prospect.

At times this story seemed like a little bit too much. Too much was happening, characters were mixing together and confused me at times, too much drama, too much mystery, too much.. but still good enough to entertain.
I was pitying Nicolas at the end. I hope he will turn up ok.

I don't know why this is only listed in the French original; I read the English edition.
It was all a bit of a puzzle to me; gets very good reviews on Amazon, I love thrillers, adore anything to do with the 18th century and especially set in France and even more with a good dusting of squalor, sex and violence, but it didn't grab me.
However, I read the lot.
I just found the idea that the hero could have been that close to Louis XV highly unlikely, as was the portrayal of Mme Du Barry, generally portrayed as a brainless grasping trollop. Here she is seen as quite the reverse. Other readers say they found the book gripping. I was never worried for the hero for a second.

The atmosphere of 18th century Paris leaps off the pages, smells and all. A lovely description of characters and interactions. The sentence structure threw me off at points, likely due to the translation from French (at least I've had the same experience with others books translated from French, too). In the end, the pictures painted are so vivid that they drew more of my attention than the actual plot.

Jean Francois Parot's Nicolas Le Floch is one of my favourite characters. I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in the series and if I could I would give it six stars. If you love history, wonderful characterisation, a brilliant plot and to taste,smell and experience life in Paris in the 1700's then I highly recommend any of Jean Francois Parot's Nicolas Le Floch books.

Série toujours aussi prenante, j'ai apprécié le petit saut à Londres qui nous permets de sortir un peu de la capitale et voir comment les choses fonctionnaient ailleurs à cette époque. Toujours une pépite de série policière en somme

I read a previous one in the series in French and really enjoyed it. I don't know if it was the translation, but this one seemed quite hard work with the language. And the plot was a bit overly and unnecessarily convoluted. Not terrible, but not brilliant either.

Pas facile à lire, puisqu'il demande un certain degré d'attention (autrement on se perd très facilement), mais attrapant. Intéressant le côté historique du roman, la mort du roi, la montée des demandes sociales, le lent chemin qui aboutira à la Révolution. Il faudra lire les suites!

Das Buch hatte unglaubliche Längen in der Mitte. Für mich hätte auch der Trip nach England komplett raus gekonnt.
