Dead bodies are popping up in Lobrooke and they have Blue’s name written on them, literally.
The Blue Devil is one of the most feared creatures walking the planet as she should be. Losing grip of her sanity and humanity most of the time from an ability that’s both a blessing and a curse, Blue has built a reputation that lets others know to stay the fuck out of her way. She’s cold, ruthless, and powerful, however she’s not invincible and someone is out to prove that. Now Blue is forced to work with the man who put nearly half a dozen bullets in her just a few weeks ago and a stick in the mud law enforcement agent, neither of whom she trust. If she wants to survive, she must put aside her pride and trust issues before the people she cares about join the string of bodies appearing in Lobrooke.
I originally received this book as an ARC, but I liked it so much I thought snagging it on KU and reading again to support the author would and spread the word would be good. Blue is a rough character, full of temper, angst, drama and snark, but she is also compelling and goal driven - even if those goals do not always mesh with those in her reluctant team. She’s harsh, but I kinda love her - and I definitely love London. Mind you, I’m not sure if there is, or will be a romantic entanglement with that European dragon, considering some of the looks thrown around, but he brings a level of intrigue and Heat to this action packed adventure.
Pros; - Very Inventive. - World building, it is slight to start with, but you get the feeling of expanse as the narrative goes on. - characters. There is little development, but what is presented is fascinating. - Blue. Easy to love AND hate in equal measure. She’s brash, impulsive and far too arrogant.... but she may have reason. - The glossary. Read it. Refer back to it. You’ll need it.
Cons: - Blue’s reactions are sometimes TOO over the top and aggressive. - A few plot points were painfully obvious but shown as great surprise. - A bit disjointed in places, but still able to be followed.
This was one of those happy moments when I realised that I have yet again discovered a great new author, whose work I will follow, read and adore for a long time to come. Urban fantasy at it's best. The book kept me up all night because I couldn't stop reading. The author's writing is consistent and impeccable. The story is gripping, interesting, original, and incredibly well written. The world the author has created is detailed and well built, and the characters are fantastic. There is quite a bit of violence in the story, and there is somewhat of a shift in generally socially acceptable values when it comes to the main character. This multi-talented author has managed to give the readers a fresh, interesting, and original new story, as well as the best possible presentation of the main character, as she designed and created these beautiful covers herself. The main character is not following a standard "good guy" v. "bad guys" scenario. Absolutely not. Blue is a cold-hearted killer who loves her people and would do anything to protect them. The fact that she is a prolific and successful assassin on the side is besides the point. Or that she might be slightly psychotic or a sociopath, that's also besides the point. Or that she might have a temper and clearly pronounced anger issues. Blue is amazing and I love her to madness. The other two characters of interest could not be more different. London is a slightly annoying foreigner who shows up for reasons unknown. Eventually he grown on you, really, he does, a lot. Levitski is a supernatural law enforcement high ranking agent, who decides to team up with Blue and London, behind his organisation's back to solve the case of dead bodies turning up all over the town. I could not help but dislike his prudeness, blind need to follow the rules even when it made no sense whatsoever, judgemental nature, and a slight lack of realistic views on life. The dynamics between Blue, and London, and Levitsky, lead to absurdly funny situation, not in a romantic way but in a way of a completely dysfunctional crime solving team. The author did an amazing job here. There are more interesting characters in the story, of course, and the author did an impeccable job of developing them and making them integral to the story. There is no romance in this series, at least not yet, which is great because romance does not suit Blue's character at all. The main story gets resolved, however, there are numerous issues left purposefully vague and mysterious, that I hope the author will spend many books elaborating on. This was truly one of the best books I have read and I can't wait for the next one. The series is best to start with By Her Hand, a prequel.
The Blue Devil follows Blue, aka The Blue Devil, an assassin, dragon, and bar owner. She is not a soft and sweet lady. She is a threat in every way. A woman you want on your side, not as an enemy. When strangers invade her life and bodies that she hasn't killed begin to turn up, Blue must do what she has to in order to keep her loved ones safe. Quirah Casey is a relatively new author to the publishing world. I've read two novellas by her, both set in this same world focusing on two characters within this book. This book reads like someone who has been in the game for years wrote it. A smooth and easy read with interesting and natural sounding dialogue makes it a joy to read. With an inventive world, we get new things that I haven't quite seen before. At least not in the way they are done here. I really liked the rules of the world and the way things worked. Blue has some really cool powers. There are no info dumps but we do get info piece by piece making it easy to digest. The mystery part of the book is well done. With many paranormal type mystery books, I find they lack in complexity and I figure out the bad guy in the first few chapters. Not so here. While I had my suspicions about one of the characters, that's all it was for the vast majority of the book. I still don't know who the big bad is, though I have a theory with nothing to really base it on. For those of you who hate cliffhangers, this one doesn't really end on one. We do see the lead in to the next book, but it isn't "gasp. *throw book across room* why?" type stuff. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this book. Be sure to check out the prequels as well. I'm excited to find a new author and looking forward to more of this world.
I really wanted to like this one as much as I liked Stealing the Throne. I like tough heroines, even crazy seemingly psychotic ones. However, there were no redeemable traits with Blue for me. She treats everyone like crap even the ones she considers family. Her arrogance was annoying, especially when it is made clear she isn't perfect and has blindspots. Not being able to accept one's flaws and think rationally makes her whole character unrealistic because she holds so much power and has so many people under her. You can tell there is more to her story and I wouldn't be surprised if some of that information is in the prequel but in my opinion, it is an unspoken rule that novellas never contain any information that is pertinent to the main books when it comes to story arcs or character development.
I became addicted to Blue in her prequel and I can't wait for the next book. Blue is a funny, loyal, badass. You really get everything with this book, great mystery, hot guys, hysterical fmc, well developed side characters and relationships. Quirah Casey is giving me exactly what I want in a book and she makes it easy to get lost in her world. I love the covers on every book she has out. Make space on your bookshelf for this new author, you're going to want to read everything she writes.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It moved along at an amazing pace which was neither too fast nor too slow making it the perfect read. The characters seem so real that you feel as though you know them and you want to be there to help them overcome everything that stands in their way. The story once you start reading you will be unable to stop. It will grab you from the very beginning and you wont be able to put it down until the very last word is read. This is a must read, no doubt about it and you will be telling all your friends about it.
The Blue Devil is the first in this series and having read the prequel, I am immediately hooked to read this one. Blue is one heck of an unapologetically bad ass heroine and who can very well handle her own, thank you very much. It is rare to find a perfectly balanced kick ass FMC without it sounding way over the top; in my opinion and Blue is that one for me. The story, its characters and even the secondary ones are well thought out and flowed beautifully. It is a perfect mix of action, mystery and just a touch of slow burn romance that I love. I loved and enjoyed this book and I’m eagerly waiting for its next installment.
This was my first time reading a book by Quirah Casey, and I was not disappointed! This book had a little bit of everything: sexual tension, a story line with a lot of action, and a bit of mystery as well. The characters are well developed and I’m very excited to learn even more about them as the story progresses. I feel there is a lot in all of their pasts that will be discovered as the story continues and as the characters open up to each other. Can’t wait to read the next book!
Wow. Blue is a strong independent dragon lady who don’t need no man! She is an assassin at the absolute top of the food chain, but suddenly bodies start dropping in her town and she has a problem to deal with. This book has maybe a little bit of a slow burn romance to it, but in the mean time it is totally worth the read. Thrilling, violent, could not put down!
So this book was crazy awesome!! I love blue, she is so badass and even though she is a wee bit unhinged she loves her family furiously and is protective of her town!! I cannot wait for the second book to be released so please hurry!! Also that lil sneak peak for the Stealing The Throne series was awesome and cannot wait for that series so please hurry!!
I really enjoyed this book, there was great chemistry between Blue and the other characters, especially London and Blaine. The action and interesting story line were just icing on the cake. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more from Quirah and this series.
I love Blue and can't wait for more Stories, A Character has not grabbed my attention in awhile the way Blue does, a dragon shifter, loyal, stubborn, Bad Ass Heroine , Exciting read, loved London and Blaine who end up a part of Blues team.Look forward to reading more from this Author.
It's been awhile since I picked up an UF book and this one had all the things I love. Interesting world building. A strong FMC, ad well as intriguing side characters. The storyline was well thought out as well.
I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. This book was crazy good!! It had lots of suspense and excitement. I absolutely loved Blue, she is a total badass dragon assassin. And she has a great sense of humor. This book has everything a good paranormal story needs. A real page turner.
Great UF read. Love the world Quirah Casey created with this series. The story is well written with a strong MFC. This was my first Quirah Casey read and i am now hooked to this series.
I received a free copy of this book and am volontarily leaving a review.
If you are looking for non-stop action and supernatural creatures, this is the book for you. With a Jessica Jones meets The Mortal Instruments vibe, this is an unforgettable start to a new series! I can't wait to read the next book. :)
It's one of those, it's not you, it's me kind of thing. :)
The Blue Devil is feared by all, unbeatable, she gets the job done, no evidence, no mistakes. Until someone beats her. When strange things start to happen she has to join forces with the guy who beat her (and put multiple bullets into her) & uptight agent.
I love the setting, the magic of it, the rich variety of characters & a very intense story. It's an interesting take on paranormal creatures. The mystery aspect intertwining perfectly with the intensity of the story.
I'm a big fan of anything paranormal, so I liked that side of the book very much,. The world is well developed and characters are interesting. I wasn't the biggest fan of the main character, something about her that just didn't mesh with me. We had no chemistry. :)
The main character is funny, strong, no regular Mary Sue or damsel in distress. She is old and wise enough to solve her own problems, but still have the right weaknesses not to make her all mighty. I really enjoyed reading it :)
