Well, I think I might be done with this series. Volume 6 is noticeably thinner than the past five, but it somehow felt significantly longer.

The battle from last volume ends a bit unceremoniously, and the rest of the story just meanders between daily life for Asuka, Kurumi, Sayako, and Nozomi; flashbacks; an attempt to recruit/brainwash Chisato; and another periodic effort to introduce Pei Pei to the story, while largely leaving her still feeling irrelevant to everything. Oh, and the volume ends with a lead-in to a brewing war in Ukraine, where Russian sympathizers are using magical mercenaries, which just feels...a bit different these days.

Until the very end, this volume feels very directionless, and the path the series seems to be taking going forward just feels...inconsequential. Like, the plot is just going to keep hopping from one war-torn region to the next, without anything except the vague hints of the Babel Brigade to (maybe) tie anything together.

Also, the absurd proportions of some of these characters has finally reached the point of being too distracting. It's hard to take reminiscences about trauma and PTSD seriously, when they're coming from a character wearing a bikini that's struggling to contain tits the size of basketballs.

Spec-Ops is at its best when it's leaning into its ridiculous, Hollywood action movie spectacle. But when it tries to turn serious, it just can't let go of its fanservice long enough find its footing. It's possible to mix themes of magic and real-world warfare, and have it be serious, or mindlessly action-packed, or sexy, or whatever. But you've got to pick one; if you don't, you end up with a story that feels like it's just running through clotheslines: Now it's wearing a suit, now it's wearing swim trunks, now it's wearing an evening dress, just ending up with whatever happens to stick to it at any given time, with no identity of its own.

We are now past where the anime ended, so I’m interested in where this new arc is going, very current politically. I can’t help but mention the bonus chapter that starts right after the main story. Good Lord! It’s nasty!!!

Is it just me or is Kurumi aka War Nurse, becoming a little unhinged?

Anyway, this one was great. I can feel the foreboding looming though.

I find myself wishing we'd get more of the side characters stories rather than the main cast. Chisato's life has been harrowing and wish better for her.
