Brike Sledgeborne, a dwarf tunnelling in the dragon tail’s mountain. All he had ever known for years was stone and dust and a wall which no matter how much he dug always looked the same. He toiled because he had seen his old home, his family and all he knew crushed by orcs so now all he wanted was to help dig a new safe home for all of them to rest in. He found a dark orb whilst digging and pocketed it. All riches belonged to the King and he had never done something like this before. Carved into the orb was the likeness of a dragon which in the light of day he could’ve sworn had moved, then a dragon came towards him and called him. Dragons were rare in Shesaitju and he had never seen one especially one like this one. Seems he had unknowingly summoned him from his slumber in the heart of Balonhearth, the mountain. The dragon was bound by honour to the soulbearer and he would grant him just one request. He was a dreadfire, a treader of worlds, master of life and shadow. He wanted entrance into Balonhearth as recompense. But the one wanting to deal was a demon and Brike wanted free of it. However no matter what he did to the orb and how far he threw it he just couldn’t get rid of it. Polcrym the demon forged their new home, many lost their lives even if not at his hand directly but only Brike survived from his old friends and now it was time to keep his promise. This is a story about a dwarf, heroic as only dwarves are, and a demon, tricky as always too, with a great surprising ending.

Very short tidbit from the Pantego universe.

Unlike many short prequel stories, it did not try to stuff the entire world/characters of the other books into a short format. The story was a look into the life of a single dwarf during the building of their home. It was well told and gave a good feel for the rest of the stories. It did leave me wanted to know more about Brike, but I guess all good short stories do that.

This is a short story of a group of dwarfs building a new home in a huge mountain. One of them finds a special stone, granting him a special wish --- and, does it come true! Well written, well developed, a joy to read!

A nice short although it does make a bit more sense if you have read other books in this world.
A freebie so worth a read although the ending means you may want more from this story.

I enjoyed how this was written. A quick detailed story about an honest dwarf and a dragon. There is a moral to this story that should be read instead of told in the review.
